Trisha Pettis [4:42] and she's going to be presenting on South View's multi-district professional development day and I would just like to [4:48] remind our community that souie middle school was just named the 2023 [4:53] amle which I don't know what that stands for so maybe um or principal pedest you [4:59] can let me know that stands for but School of Distinction um it was one of only 11 schools Nationwide to receive [5:05] this honor and the only school in Minnesota to be recognized this year um so it is not surprising that districts [5:11] from throughout the state seek out South View to learn best practices on building student agency and belonging through [5:17] advisory principal Pettis is here to tell us more about how South viiew is providing educational leadership for [5:23] other Minnesota schools in our state welcome principal Pettis thank you thank you all for [5:29] having me the am Ali stands for um American middle level Educators [5:34] Association so it's a recognition specific to middle level Educators um I [5:40] did have just a couple slides I'm not sure if if I needed to present those or if somebody should I go ahead and [5:46] present yeah give it a try okay oh wait somebody else is amazing there we go [5:54] service so part of that recognition of that award is um collaborating and [5:59] sharing with other middle schools and this is something that we actually did well um before the pandemic schools [6:05] would come on visit we kind of took a break and then in the last two years have brought back site visits and if you [6:11] go ahead to the next slide I did we have two days during the school year one in the fall and one in the winter where [6:18] other middle level Educators and teachers admin counselors um all different types of Staff come to our [6:26] building and spend a whole day with us and so we've had this year we've welcomed over 140 Educators um it's [6:33] really fun to partner with our neighboring schools wetta minetonka um and we even have schools as far as [6:39] duth come and visit us and um besides this um these two days where people came [6:47] to our site we were also asked to hold a work a full day Middle School Workshop [6:53] um by the Minnesota principales Association where we had over 80 attendees um join us for that and so if [7:02] you go to the next Slide the um this day is um designed around hearing our work [7:10] around belonging and agency and literacy and numeracy are just how our district is [7:16] meeting our strategic plan our vision and Mission um then they get to hear from Learners in on a learner panel [7:24] actually go and visit classrooms and see it in action in the classrooms then we offer some breakout professional [7:30] development sessions where they actually get to hear some um specific learnings around the topics we're sharing and then [7:37] some processing time in the afternoon and we get really um it's such an [7:43] exciting day full of great energy and it's really because and we we benefit it [7:49] from self you just as much as our attendees through this um professional collaboration with other middle level [7:56] Educators especially locally we have so you know best PD we say is is the the [8:02] teacher down the hall from you um and so not only are they learning from us but we're learning from them and what the [8:08] cool things that they're doing at their schools as well and it's really about um building teacher efficacy and seeing the [8:15] impact that the teachers work is having on our community and um even local [8:21] schools and um also it creates leadership opportunities for our students that are sharing our students [8:27] are a big part of that day not only do they get to speak to attendees but what [8:32] they're demonstrating in their classrooms and when we went to that Workshop um that we that we hosted we [8:38] brought um 20 students with us and they helped us lead all of our sessions um [8:45] and it also creates new additional learning opportunities for our staff because we do actually charge a fee for [8:51] this day because we offer professional development and then we're able to use those funds um to send our staff to [8:59] different learnings and trainings and professional development so it's really um we have so many benefits um besides [9:07] just sharing our work work we're also learning um and as a as a part of the [9:13] process as well so I just have one more and at that last picture on the right there is we ask participants to share [9:21] their Reflections on our podcast about their day um and if you go to the next slide we always get really positive [9:28] feedback from participants as um that it was a meaningful day um and they're [9:34] always super walk away excited and impressed by what they're seeing our students and our staff doing um and so [9:40] we asked them to share some of those takeaways on the podcast we have a really fun episode about people's [9:46] perception of our of our school and our district and um I highly encourage [9:51] anyone interested in learning more to check out that podcast and there's just a picture of all of our Learners that we [9:56] brought with us down to the the principal's conference in [10:02] January so thanks for letting me share thank you very much board members do you have questions or comments for principal [10:12] Pettis I see lots of hand clapping even though they're muted so thank you so much outstanding job and outstanding [10:19] work um we really appreciate you bringing this information to us and highlighting it um so thank you thank [10:26] you um for all the great work that um South View and I had a chance to hear [10:31] some of the students um during our core planning the other day and I can attest [10:37] to just the phenomenal work that you're doing over there so thank you thank you Al thanks for giving us a [10:44] chance to share absolutely okay we're going to move on to hearings from hearing from members of [10:50] the public um and before we um start that I just wanted to remind um [10:56] community members that when you signed in and asked to speak you acknowledge an understanding and adherence to board [11:02] policy 206 which are our community comments guidelines pursuant to this policy each speaker has a maximum of [11:09] three minutes to speak when those uh we do have one individual that [12:42] requested to speak tonight um Meg Carlson and I believe she has joined us [12:50] virtually Meg Carlson are you here hello yes I'm here hi thank you so [12:57] much for joining us apologize that we are doing this online and not in person but I really appreciate the fact that [13:03] you um joined us thank you yes absolutely whenever you're ready you're [13:09] more than welcome to start your three minute Community comment good evening my name is Meg [13:15] Ahmed Carlson and I've open enrolled my two young children at EPS for the upcoming school year and while I'm [13:22] excited about the academic opportunities for my kids I also have some great [13:27] concerns to begin again I'm Palestinian I come from a diverse family in [13:33] Palestine they live all across the region from the West Bank to Jerusalem [13:39] to the Mediterranean Sea and they practice a variety of religions some are [13:44] Christian some Muslim some Drews and some Jewish where they live in the [13:51] region and which religion they practice determines their level of freedom for example my Jewish aunts and uncles have [13:58] full rights and citizenship but my Christian family in the West Bank is primarily stuck behind the wall my [14:05] Drew's cousins are required to serve in the Israeli Army and while my Muslim aunts and uncles who live in Jerusalem [14:12] have more freedom of movement than our Christian family they are still lower class than my Jewish and Drews family [14:19] the recent censure and suspension of two Somali students for saying from The River To The Sea Palestine will be free [14:26] has demonstrated a grave deficiency in your understanding of the Palestinian people and our plight this is not some [14:34] coded anti-semitic slogan that is that is propaganda used to silence the [14:39] Palestinian people when we say from The River To The Sea we are referencing the [14:44] geography of the land from the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea we're calling for all Palestinians to be free [14:51] from occupation to be equal citizens on their native land that means Christians [14:57] Muslims Drews and Jews we're calling for the equal rights of all people [15:02] regardless of religion an end to the cast system and occupation am I to understand that [15:10] equality and freedom for all are values that you don't support because when you [15:15] suspended these students that's certainly the impression that was left [15:21] furthermore your silence and refusal to listen to and address my community's concerns makes the situation even worse [15:27] moving these meetings online has simply demonstrated a lack of Courage on your part to confront these difficult [15:34] conversations headon as an educator myself itself I exort my students to get [15:42] curious lean in and ask the difficult questions when they don't understand [15:48] something or find it challenging the decision to avoid Community engagement and dialogue paints a picture of [15:55] ignorance or Worse racism because because let's be clear these are not [16:01] just any students that were suspended they're black they're Somali and they're [16:06] Muslim I implore you to be better role models for our students engage in a [16:12] meaningful conversation with my community there is much about the Palestinian community that you have yet [16:18] to learn and it's only by leaning in asking questions and having conversation [16:23] with us that you will know us better Miss Carlson your thank you great Educators [16:29] acknowledge their limits of understanding and seek us that you can be great Educators [16:37] and role models for all of our children regardless of race or ethnicity or you [16:42] very much thank you okay we're going to move on to our [16:48] consent agenda oh I I apologize I skipped over our presentation um is um Miss D online [16:57] excellent superintendent D I apologize olze uh we're happy to welcome um superintendent da the superintendent of [17:03] District 287 and she's here to present information to both the board and the community about District [17:09] 287 which Edina schools is part of and she's going to explain more about the district and how it serves our [17:16] students thank you madam chair superintendent Dr Stanley members of the [17:22] board I am Marcy Dow I'm the proud superintendent of Intermediate School District 287 and with me I have [17:29] principal Deb Carlson doom and we are here tonight just to share a little bit more about how we are your partner um in [17:37] and in in intermediate District 287 i' not seen the slides up yet are [17:46] they there we go thank you all right so the next slide talks [17:54] about our mission in District 287 and our mission is to be the Premier provider of innovative specialized [18:01] services to ensure that each member district can meet the unique learning needs of its students and that's really [18:07] critical because it's about us partnering with you so you can do all [18:12] the great things you do for your students in your families um so we are not an intermediate is not an [18:19] independent school district families can't open enroll in an intermediate District they really work with you as a [18:26] member district to provide that Continuum of services and then our teams [18:32] your Edina and intermediate District 287 come together and talk about programming [18:37] for students so I'll go to the next slide we just finished our strategic [18:45] plan just like a traditional district and in our strategic plan we have three Focus areas achieving academic success [18:53] making sure that all of our Learners are hitting the marks and all of their growth targets cultivating equity and [18:59] inclusion promoting social emotional learning and so we're excited to launch [19:05] this and we already have seen great gains when we really focus in on what our students [19:10] needs in the next slide it really talks about some fun facts about District 287 [19:17] so in 1965 intermediate District 287 started [19:23] it was a um West Metro member districts came together and said you know we [19:28] really need to develop career in Tech education but we don't have the capacity in all of our districts to build a big [19:35] auto shop or a big construction um it also talked about you know what we have [19:41] students in special education but we may have a student that has unique needs and there's one that might be visually blind [19:48] um and we don't really have the the community or the Continuum of support [19:54] that each individual district has to develop so they came together and developed intermediates District 287 in [20:01] kind of economy of scale and building communities for our Learners there's four intermediate [20:08] school districts in the state of Minnesota and we're regionally organized um and we believe that District 287 we [20:16] are part we're an extension of Our member districts we are not in competition we are not uh enrolling [20:23] students we really are that economy of scale to provide a continuum of services [20:29] for all of your students in District 287 we have 12 member districts and we um [20:35] for our specialized programming we only support Pro specialized services in our 12 member [20:42] districts as you go to the next [20:48] slide someone might say well we provide special education services in Edina how are how are we different and really [20:56] Edina does an amazing job providing special education services in the most [21:01] inclusive way for all of your students and families and then there's some times where students need more than what the [21:08] programming has available in Edina so sometimes we talk about special education in their Federal settings and [21:15] it's really about how much time does a student get removed from general [21:21] education and just have special education services for a portion of their day so Ein Public Schools can [21:28] provide Federal setting one two and three and where they need our support is when we provide Federal setting four [21:34] which is a separate school um where they do uh students are not integrated with [21:40] students with general education it just is a specialized services for students in special education [21:46] only and so if a student needs that our member districts are working with [21:51] families trying all of the interventions trying everything um and keep them in [21:57] that inclusive home school and then there's times they need us and that's when he din Public Schools or any other [22:03] member district will contact us and we talk about a plan together to support a student and [22:10] family in the next slide um just to talk about some of our [22:16] programs we have four main educational centers on the slide you'll see uh where [22:22] they're located the grade bands in which they serve in specialized services and also are which ones have alternative of [22:28] Learning Centers um you can also see I put the enrollment of how many students [22:33] um Edina Public School students are in each of the sites and so South just in [22:39] proximity is the site that has the most of the students we'll go to the next [22:49] one we also have other programming besides our four special education Federal sites we have an we have [22:56] Northern Star online program it's it's not a school it's a program and so what [23:01] the difference is is that um we provide supplemental courses we are not [23:07] necessarily a full day school um so we supplement what our member districts and [23:13] for online also non-member districts so an example could be um for a language course um again you [23:22] can't provide the Continuum of all languages and so we may provide uh Mandarin Chinese course course if a [23:29] student is interested in that language where maybe some high schools in Our member districts aren't able to do that [23:35] or you have um you have Spanish as one of your languages and then as they go [23:41] through Spanish one two three four five you know you might not have enough enrollment to support um Spanish four or [23:49] five and that's where we can kick in have our special our Spanish teachers Support classes from multiple districts [23:56] and and students can access those higher level we also have AP courses and [24:02] sometimes students um based on a member District's high school schedule um they want to take they have [24:09] the the required graduation credits and then they want to take a language and they want to take music and sometimes [24:15] they need other times in the day to get that done or Andor they want to start their day earlier so that they can get [24:22] release to go to a job and support their family in the afternoon all of those unique situations are online um program [24:30] supports our member districts we also provide Educational Services general education services and [24:37] special education services in our care and treatment facilities we have 10 sites in for Edina it's Prairie care [24:43] it's a partial hospitalization um but we provide all all of our member districts we provide [24:49] care and treatment Educational Services we also have a career and Tech education program that's located at hennipen [24:55] Technical College in Eden Prairie and we have some of the courses listed there in the [25:01] enrollment one of our largest mobile team is our itinerant services and so [25:07] itinerant Services really is um speech language assisted technology all of the [25:13] related services that wrap around um students in special education and what [25:18] we call loow incident mean there's not a lot of students um that have that categorical disability as we go to the [25:25] next slide you can see our member districts and all [25:31] of our itinerant services that we provide we support 1,400 over 1,400 [25:37] students within our sites as well as all of our member districts for itinerant Services some of the services that Edina [25:44] has historically participated with is we have teachers that um teachers of uh students that are physically impaired um [25:52] as it's a specific license that we provide that ler and consultation sometimes it's direct [25:57] support and sometimes it's consultation to your special education teams we have our audiologist our blind visual [26:05] impaired teachers um and we have a orientation and Mobility specialist as [26:11] well as a augmentative communication specialist that's really supporting students in finding their voice um [26:18] through the use of technology so that is a little bit about [26:23] District 287 and now I'm going to pass it off to um principal Deb um to share [26:30] about a student and how we work together to develop an extension of [26:37] programming thank you Marcy I'm so happy to be with you U my [26:43] name is Deb Carlson doom and I'm the principal at self- education center which is located in Richfield and as you [26:50] saw on um Marcy's PowerPoint or slideshow um we have about 26 um [26:56] students from the Adina School District with us right now if we go back to the [27:01] slideshow um I think the last eight slides are about a young man from [27:11] udina yeah so I'm going to talk a little bit about a fourth grade student that we [27:17] have at self education center who came to us just about three years ago um from [27:23] Aina school district and um when Ru came to us um we really uh collaborated a [27:30] great deal um with Edina because um we were having a really hard time um in [27:36] Idina and when he started with us just getting rud to be able to be in school so he started with us with two um staff [27:44] to support him and he was attending for about one hour a day and now over the last um three years Ru is able to attend [27:52] full days of school um in a classroom with four or five peers and um one uh [27:59] support professional who helps him so he's had a tremendous amount of growth and we can go to the next [28:07] slide so here's Ru um and he is in our tier three Elementary program and you saw um on [28:15] Marcy's slideshow that we we serve students in kindergarten all the way through um age 22 and we serve students [28:23] with a variety um of disabilities um and also Alo a variety [28:29] of abilities and um Rue uh has autism spectrum disorder and he also has um a [28:37] speech and language impairment and um his teacher says that this really contributes to his individualized [28:42] approach to learning and if you um if you ask anybody that works with Ru they [28:48] will tell you that he he exudes positivity and joy um and he really [28:54] loves to be wherever he is I mean he is he owns his [28:59] place we can go to the next slide um so I'm going to talk a little [29:07] bit about um ru's family and um one of [29:12] the one of the things that happens often um especially um in a district like [29:18] Idina people feel very um connected um to their district and they have a lot of [29:24] pride in the Adina school district and when a student is being referred we work [29:29] super hard um with um with the liaison from Vina to make sure that the family [29:36] knows that um that we aren't an we aren't an other we're an extension of Edina and so every um intake meeting [29:44] every IEP meeting every time we're doing any kind of um conversation about a change that might be happening to ruse [29:51] programming Edina is at the table with us so that families feel their full support not only if the um self [29:58] education center staff but also um a Vina staff um I just want to make sure that [30:04] you know that R ruse's Mom and Dad um know that we're we're here tonight and [30:09] they also shared a lot about ruse story with us um so that you would have a full [30:15] understanding sort of um the challenges and also then um how proud everyone is [30:20] about ru's successes um so Rue was um born in uh [30:27] China and when he was about 2 days old he was placed in um a nursery um and [30:34] everyone in the orphanage where he was um placed spoke pantones and he was [30:40] there for about nine months and after nine months um they determined that Ru was experiencing failure to thrive and [30:48] so they needed to move him to an orphanage that had a higher Staffing ratio so um in order to do that they had [30:54] to move him out of the um city where he was into another city that had a a an [31:00] orphanage that might be able to better support him um what that also meant was everyone at the new orphanage spoke [31:06] mandrin so when he was between nine and 10 months old he made a huge change and was placed in an orphanage um fairly far [31:13] away from where he was born he was there for about nine months and um continued [31:18] to have failure to thrive and um they got really worried about um his survival [31:26] and so they started looking for for a family who could potentially Foster him and so they found a British family and [31:34] um they moved Ru in with the British family um who only spoke English and they had a nanny who spoke Cantonese so [31:42] then at 18 months he went um went from being in a home that spoke um Mandarin [31:48] into a home that spoke cantones he he was with that family just for a short period of time um and then um placed [31:56] with his um family that he's currently with um with the Brown family and um he [32:01] is the youngest of three siblings and uh their older brother is not in any of these pictures because he's he's [32:08] graduated from college but um he is beloved by by Ru um and so the family [32:15] picked him up uh spent some time in China came home Ru was born with a cleft pet and a cleft lip um when he got into [32:22] the United States he started a series of surgeries and he just had his last surgery at the end of third grade last [32:29] year um and so R's family has been through a tremendous amount in terms of [32:35] language acquisition in terms of um medical needs and then in terms of his [32:40] um emotional needs and you can go to the next slide [32:46] and just want to reiterate yeah just want to reiterate and just thank the Brown family for their openness and roof [32:53] to share his story and let us share it with you and so I just want to acknowledge that um permission and uh [33:00] openness just a great example of how we collaborate together Michael was at the the 287 [33:08] board meeting when we talked about Ru and I was saying that um they weren't able to attend that board meeting but um [33:14] ru's mom Susan told us before that board meeting um we should be grateful because [33:20] when she starts talking about Rue she doesn't quit so no one would be able to go [33:25] home um you can go to the next slide so here's Ru in his own words he says my [33:32] name is Rue Brown I am 10 years old I like playing sports and high flying [33:38] except for he says I like playing sports and high flying like that because as I [33:44] mentioned you he really likes having fun I am the champion I like the go-karts and I like music and my favorite colors [33:51] are black and orange and here's Rue in um in one of [33:56] our sensory rooms um it's a pretty big room and we have four of these go-karts and they are probably one of the the [34:03] favorite things um of Rue and most of the students that are in his [34:09] program you can go to the next slide thank you um [34:15] so one of the challenges right is um is academics uh for students that come to [34:21] us and meeting kids where they are and so Ru is in a class with four other students all of them are in um third [34:29] fourth and fifth grade and they use a literacy curriculum called unique Learning Systems um and you can see here [34:37] that Ru actually has a a copy of a book um and he is able to um listen to staff [34:44] read it and point out each word and then Rue is able to read it um pointing at [34:50] each word and after he's read the short story a few times um he's able to answer [34:55] comprehension questions on his own with very little help from the staff and [35:00] what's notable here um besides the fact I think that um the teaching teaching [35:07] staff who've worked with r over the last three years are amazing is that Ru really has gone from very little [35:13] language um and certainly um not able to read and only attending school for one [35:18] hour a day um to being able to um read and answer comprehension questions and [35:24] continually increase um his ability to communicate verbally and um after his [35:31] last surgery last year they um sealed the hole on the top of his mouth and all of a sudden when he went to speech the [35:38] air um would come out of his mouth instead of through his nose and so he had all all kinds of abilities to say [35:45] new language and to have or to say new words and to make new sounds so over the course of this year he's learned like um [35:52] the th sound the M sound and the B sound and when I when I go into the room [35:59] because I I went back today to prepare for tonight and just like find out it's so funny how proud everyone is like [36:05] they're like oh no he can do this now was like awesome I'll make sure that everyone at the agina SCH board knows [36:12] that that um Ru is nailing The Bu [36:19] sound um in addition to academic work um we work really hard to help students [36:25] gain self-regulation skills and every student has an opportunity to work with [36:31] um with OT with speech with dape um whatever they qualify for um and then [36:37] also whatever um they need in order to figure out what are the things that most [36:43] help them um calm themselves and then we practice those things when they're um [36:48] not escalated so that they can Implement them when they are escalated and ruse um [36:54] got three good ones here he he really l likes uh gross body movement so he [37:00] really likes jumping so you can see he's got these um jumping blocks he also um [37:06] really likes hand squeezes and deep breaths you can do five hand squeezes and five deep breaths and recently in [37:12] working with a deep teacher it turns out that he really um likes deep um pressure [37:17] and weight and so he started doing the leg press so he goes usually with the [37:22] date Teacher to do leg press but um one day the dape teacher was gone and R really really likes routine as do many [37:29] of our students so the teacher took him to do the the machines and R's on the [37:36] leg press and he knows what he's supposed to do so he's doing it then he UPS the weight and he's doing it and he UPS the weight and he's doing it and he [37:42] gets off and the teacher's name is Megan she said well I just figured I'm just GNA check it out see what he can do so [37:48] she gets on and she she couldn't lift it and she's like oh ru's getting really strong like I think that's [37:56] true um Susan and her husband gave us several [38:02] quotes about um our work at 287 with Ru and here's one she said school is more [38:09] than reading and writing it is the pride of having family come to view student [38:14] classroom art the ability to make friends a science fair presentation and a place to laugh District 27 [38:22] self-education Center masterfully delivers those experiences for Unique Learners and that is why our son is [38:31] thriving and the next slide has a picture of Ru um he did a he did a quite [38:37] an extensive science hair project um probably you remember it um from doing it with your own children or doing it [38:43] yourself where you get all white carnations and you cut them off and you put them in D and you do things where you time it and you see which dyes work [38:49] more or whatever so so Rue did that and he worked on his board and he did his entire presentation for his mom once and [38:57] and then he was in the hallway here and every other family or classroom that came by he he he decided he was not [39:03] going to talk but he would share the board um so he's really proud of that we also have a um we have maker space which [39:11] is a a place where kids can go to um do kind of stem stuff so some um science [39:17] technology engineering math um and ru's favorite thing when he's in maker space is circuits and so here you can see he's [39:24] working on completing a circuit and then that should get the little hel opter thing to [39:32] fly um one of the things I think that um in ru's classroom they're really trying [39:38] to learn is um not how to take turns although that's a piece of it but [39:43] learning authentic cooperative play so learning how to stay engaged when it's [39:49] not your turn and learning how to care about how someone else does when it's not you in the spotlight and um partly [39:57] because the age of the boys they're all uh third fourth and fifth graders so they're all getting a little older partly because our speech person and our [40:04] OT person and then all the classroom staff have really dedicated a lot of time to this they're really figuring it [40:10] out so that when they go into the gym and they play a game um or they play um [40:16] I can't remember what game this is but another one is Candy Land when it's not their turn they can pay attention to the [40:21] game they can cheer for their friend they can um remain engaged the whole [40:26] time which kind of leads us to the last slide [40:33] um in um in our school and and ATA like our job is education right I mean we [40:40] work together to ensure that students have access to literacy and math that they're learning and that stuff is [40:46] important to families but I I think what's also very important to families is that their child feel safe and happy [40:53] and that they have friendships and they learn how um to maintain those as they get older and um when Ru came to us [41:00] three years ago one of the things his mom and dad talked about was they just wanted Rue to have a friend like that's [41:07] what their goal was and um this year when Ru turned 10 he had a birthday [41:12] party and every boy from his class came and it was at um Sky Zone and I think it [41:18] was a little crazy and and a little hectic um but also um wonderful and the [41:24] boys were able to play and celebrate Ru and um and now they've had I think subsequent [41:29] play dates and connections and so um be because we worked with you and because [41:35] you worked with us to get Ru here he's come this far I'd be really happy to answer [41:42] questions or um or anything but it it is a it is a pleasure to collaborate with you [41:48] all thank you both so much for uh presenting and for that story that was [41:53] outstanding appreciate it um board members do you have comments or questions and I might ask uh director [42:00] bourbon first since he is representing D District 287 as our board member and um [42:06] for those in the community that don't know um District 287 has its own school board and we're fortunate enough that um [42:14] director Birman sits on that board as well so he does a little bit of double duty um so we really do appreciate that [42:20] director Birman um and would love just to hear a couple comments that you might have yeah um thank you dead for bringing [42:27] this forward um as we discussed before uh just like we do in Edina when we do [42:33] our excellent in action uh 287 at every board meeting we do the same thing we [42:38] have uh a presentation that's done at every board meeting uh about recognition um of a story a staff um an element that [42:46] we're then working on and this came to us I think it was it back in January or February I can't remember what it was um [42:52] and I was not expecting to hear about um one of our ed students when it was presented and one of the great things is [42:58] that there's 12 districts that that cre s supports and we are one of them um it makes it even more real when you see all [43:05] the amazing work that 287 does and you get to then see it for one of our [43:12] students and that Rue is an Idina student who happens to attend [43:18] 287 that's what's really important for all of us on the board to recognize but it's also for our community to recognize [43:24] they are our community they are our students and they're in partnership with us um and this is why I'm the [43:30] representative forina on 287 with the other 11 districts um is such a [43:35] wonderful story to see the beginnings and the end [43:42] and that everyone can recognize that we have a very difficult job that we do every day trying to each and every take [43:50] care of all of our students and bring them to their potential this is a wonderful example of many examp [43:57] at 287 um of taking amazing students amazing staff who have all sorts of [44:03] unique challenges and every day delivering for that and so my big sort [44:09] of kind of blessing is for especially for some of our new board members um the [44:14] more we understand what's happening in 287 is how we better understand what's happening in because they're kind of [44:21] sympatico and so I just appreciate what Deb and her team have done um superintendent Dow um I've had the [44:27] privilege since she became the superintendent I got on the board when she became superintendent uh 27's been doing a wonderful wonderful job um with [44:34] also extraordinarily challenging Financial concerns Staffing [44:40] concerns everything to that we struggle with in Idina they have just as many uh [44:46] that they're trying to do every day to take care of these wonderful students so um I can't go on enough about it but I'm [44:52] glad that we were able to finally have this presentation and hopefully everyone felt the same that it's pretty amazing considering this is our student and our [44:59] family and that they're taking such good care of so thank you thank you director Bergman do any other board members have [45:06] questions or comments I would just oh director [45:12] Bergman or I'm sorry director arum just a real quick question of the [45:17] four sites I noticed that you know do families get to choose that or is it based on availability or how do um [45:24] people go to the different sites or yeah um thank you for the question um [45:29] we actually work with the district usually proximity um is what we do we [45:35] you know because we're located regionally within our 12 member districts kind of spread out um that's [45:41] why you see the kind of the cluster of Edina enrollment over at South in Richfield is just about Transportation [45:48] Community together um and and then in part it can be about programming so our [45:54] North and South programs are identical and then our West program and our Ann [45:59] Bremer so grade bands types of programming um but we usually um work [46:05] with the um it's really about what programming is needed for the [46:11] student and where the student lives thank you [46:17] yep thank you so much it doesn't look like we have any more questions so thank [46:22] you both again for um bringing all this information to us and all the work you do for all the students from all the [46:28] different districts and we will certainly have you back at minimum next year to provide another update for us um [46:36] and appreciate you taking care of those Edina students that you have so thank you thank you and it's absolutely our [46:43] pre pleasure so have a great night thank you you too thanks Mercy thanks [46:49] Deb okay we're going to move on to our consent agenda um is there anything [46:54] anyone would like to remove from our consent agenda do I have a motion to approve the [47:00] consent agenda am moved is there a second [47:07] second we will now vote by roll call to approve the consent [47:13] agenda allenburg I Aram I Barry I [47:20] Birdman I gabler I maam I I vot of to [47:27] Zer the consent agenda is approved we're going to move on to our discussion items [47:32] and we have two discussion items tonight the first one is a school board election resolution to move School Board [47:38] elections to even years um this has been discussed multiple multiple iterations um over the [47:46] last two years and was re most recently discussed at our last work session um [47:53] this the a brief history on this um as I said this issue has been [48:00] discussed multiple times and the board um has decided to move forward with [48:05] moving Schoolboard elections to even years um in order to save money for the [48:11] school district um so what this resolution does is put forward the [48:17] process for doing so um there the easiest way to get that [48:24] accomplished is to add a year on to the current terms of the existing school [48:31] board members um there was a question that I just want to point out um I appreciated [48:38] that um one of our board members brought up last time regarding um if we can or cannot um [48:47] add I apologize subtract a year from school board [48:52] terms um because the the state law says that school [48:58] boards can either add a year or subtract a year and I just want to clarify for anyone watching that yes the state law [49:06] does say you could either add a year or subtract a year what that is in reference to is when you're actually [49:13] calling the election when you're calling the election you can decide as opposed [49:19] to doing four term fouryear terms like you normally do you could do a three-year term to then move it to and [49:26] even year or you could do a five-year term to move it to an even year um [49:31] according to the legal council at Minnesota School Board Association our state constitution does not provide for [49:39] sitting members of a board to change the terms of duly elected officials when [49:46] you've been duly elected for a four-year term you cannot change those terms against the wishes of the electorate and [49:54] so I just wanted to clarify that the only option that we have as sitting board members to move us to even years [50:01] is to extend Us by a year to wait and run two more odear [50:07] elections that are then threeyear terms which pushes this out um two elections [50:15] at a cost of around $300,000 to the district or to keep it at ode elections [50:21] those are the three options given the financial situation the district is in [50:26] that is how we landed at adding the one year because then we can move it right [50:31] now and save the district money right now and so I wanted to Pride Clarity around how we ended at this being the [50:39] best option for the district um that being said the um resolution itself is [50:45] pretty cut and dry um it basically adds that year to the term and explains exactly when the evene elections would [50:54] start um I will stop talking talking and I will see if there are questions um for [51:00] board members or clarifications board members would like to ask um knowing that this will be coming up for Action [51:07] next [51:17] month sorry director gor thanks Cher Ellen Bergen thanks for [51:23] that clarification I saw that in your report too that was helpful um a clarification that I would [51:31] just like as we move forward with this um resolution the city I know has verbally [51:39] said that should we move these elections to even years that it would cost us zero [51:48] dollars and I know that's a big motivation for us to consider moving [51:53] them I would like to at some point have that in writing that we will not be [52:01] charged anything should we move these to even years um I'm not sure if it's legal [52:08] or you know and maybe if maybe that's the law that that they can't charge us if we have it in the even years but I [52:13] just would hate for us to go through this whole thing and then have us [52:19] um it in informed that we are now um responsible for splitting the election [52:26] cost thank you director gaer that makes sense [52:32] and the city school district team can look into that and try to get that done [52:37] as soon as possible so thank you thank [52:43] you anything else from board [52:50] members okay we will move on to our policy review and I will turn it back to [52:55] director G to um lead us through a policy review okay it's everyone's favorite [53:02] time of the evening all right um I am going to [53:08] invite uh director saor to speak to us [53:14] about uh most of the policies that we have up for discussion tonight so I will [53:20] turn it over to you sounds good um thank you director [53:27] gayor chair elenburg superintendent St Stanley members of the school board um [53:32] so we have eight 400 series policies to review tonight for um your consideration [53:40] and discussion the first policy is employee right to know exposure to [53:46] hazardous substances policy 407 um the recommendations for changes [53:54] or modifications to this policy are very minimal largely from the school board [54:00] Style style guide um just to point out a couple of the minimal changes we in [54:09] section four just made note that um it's there's annual training that occurs [54:16] within this within the school district um specifically for employee groups or [54:22] employee classes positions that um are routinely exposed to hazardous [54:29] substances and then of course there also um an as needed training for new [54:36] employees or employees who move from one position to another where they become [54:44] exposed or routinely exposed to Hazard hazardous sub hazardous substances um so [54:52] with those couple of recommendations that those are the only recommendations [54:58] for modifications to policy 407 are there any [55:09] questions okay the next policy um for your discuss [55:16] review and discussion is policy uh on employee Publications [55:22] instructional materials inventions and Creations policy C [55:28] 49 again um very minimal recommendations for [55:34] modifications um the only with the except with the exception of style guide [55:40] changes the only recommendation for modification to this policy is the [55:45] addition of section four which is the notice of this policy specifically [55:52] stating that the school district will give each new employee not of this policy at the time of hire and then also [55:59] posted in all school buildings um for the board's understanding we actually already do that but we talked as a [56:07] policy committee and it's always a good idea we we um to include that notice [56:14] within the body of the policy to ensure that continues forward as [56:20] well are there any questions about policy 409 [56:31] okay moving on to policy 410 which is on [56:36] the Family and Medical Family and Medical leaves um again Beyond St guide uh [56:43] recommendations there are only two recommended modifications um in policy 410 the first [56:51] one is found in section three um specifically [56:57] removing and then ruming the old um section [57:03] 3B that talked about the Minnesota pregnancy and parenting leave Law and [57:09] the term of employment that was required in the number of hours that were required under that law and the reason [57:16] we're removing that is because in the last legislative session in the 2003 spring session the law was changed where [57:24] for the Minnesota law there we no longer have a term requirement or an hour's [57:31] requirement under that particular um leave Law in addition to [57:37] that we made a a few modifications to add more inclusionary language [57:43] specifically around um being consistent in using child as opposed to son or [57:51] daughter and employee as opposed to male or female [57:56] now and those were the only changes recommended for policy [58:02] 410 are there any [58:07] questions okay policy um 431 which is on um [58:16] compensatory practices there's only one recommendation for um an addition to [58:23] this policy and that addition is found found in section three and newly added [58:30] provision under G and that's simply to align um School District practice and [58:37] frankly wage an hour law along with um along with this policy uh compensatory [58:44] time is allowed in Minnesota and for public employers however there um is for [58:52] non-exempt employees you um both the employer and the employee must [59:00] agree that compensatory time will be paid in lie of overtime and so we just [59:07] added language to make that clear again that is the practice of our school district and of course it's also the law [59:13] in the state of Minnesota um but we added the language just to make that um Aid the reader with that understanding [59:20] as well are there any questions about policy 431 [59:30] okay um policy 432 which is assignment and transfer of teachers um this is [59:38] again just simple style guide recommendations um the only area only area where we made [59:46] any uh change Beyond style guide is in [59:51] under the definitions section section three [59:57] uh g under the definition of teacher we formerly use the definition Community [1:00:03] Education teachers we have changed that definition or making that recommendation [1:00:09] to change that to preschool teachers we also had a conversation at the policy [1:00:14] committee level that um right now lure [1:00:19] is not required for preschool teachers in our state however um that is expected [1:00:25] to change as of July 1 2028 uh so this is one that we'll need to keep keep um on the list to to take [1:00:34] another look at this in the next uh year or two to ensure that we're up to dat on [1:00:40] that section or definition within this board policy and that really is the only [1:00:47] recommended change to policy 432 are there any [1:00:54] questions okay okay um the next policy is policy [1:01:01] 435 which is on the topic of employee evaluation and Improvement um for this [1:01:08] policy the only recommendation for um modifications are per the style guide so [1:01:15] just simply style guide changes any [1:01:20] questions okay um and then Paul [1:01:27] 437 which is resignation termination or non-renewal of activity position um here [1:01:36] are just a couple of minimal recommendations for modifications uh specifically under [1:01:42] purpose added the language to um better better provide an understanding of what [1:01:48] positions we're talking about in policy 437 which added the such as athletic [1:01:54] coach or Club advisor which is uh the most typical positions [1:02:00] within our activities Department that apply to policy [1:02:05] 437 we also added under section three um [1:02:11] c as provided by law just uh when specifically if an employee is a [1:02:17] headers coach um and a head varsity coach if the school district makes a [1:02:24] decision not to renew the cont contract of a head varsity coach there's actually Minnesota statute that addresses that [1:02:31] and so um just to say that of course the district would follow that process which is found in the legal references as [1:02:39] well those were the only uh recommended modifications for [1:02:45] 437 any questions okay all right the last of the 400 [1:02:53] series um four policy 439 which is [1:02:59] outside employment and conflict of interest um this two uh in addition to a [1:03:06] few style guide recommended recommended changes there's really only one um [1:03:13] recommended addition and that is under the category [1:03:18] of tutoring for pay so section [1:03:24] three h and simply it was just adding a um [1:03:30] provision number two to Aid the reader to ensure that there is uh understanding [1:03:39] that under the code of ethics for Minnesota teachers um a teacher may not [1:03:45] use professional relationships with students or parents um to private advantage and just to make sure that [1:03:50] that's something that all um all of our faculty understand as well [1:03:56] we had a conversation during policy committee to find out um how our faculty [1:04:02] are uh how they're made aware of the tutoring provision within this policy um [1:04:08] had a chance to go out to our principles and ask that question our principal share um the the procedures around [1:04:17] tutoring found in policy 439 with their faculty and then their faculty lets them [1:04:23] know um their principal know if they they are tutoring for a student or if [1:04:29] they are um taking steps to make arrangements for tutoring for students [1:04:34] just so their principal can work with them to ensure that it's in compliance with the board's policy on that topic so [1:04:42] are there any questions on policy 439 [1:04:48] okay those are the 8400 series policies thank you so [1:04:53] much thank you director sailor um and our last policy up for discussion [1:05:00] this evening is policy 812 and I believe we have H Dr [1:05:07] smle presenting on that is that correct yeah good good evening um policy 812 is [1:05:14] all about safe and healthy environment for students employees in the public two very minor changes in the policy um [1:05:22] under 3B the district and we are crossing out [1:05:27] um this part of the policy that describes each school as having to have [1:05:33] an emergency management plan so really we have an emergency management plan as a district and that encompasses all of [1:05:39] our sites and so just making that clarification the policy we also add to line that the details about that [1:05:45] Emergency Management plan can be found in policy 806 where we go into great depth about the emergency uh management [1:05:52] plan and then with that there were um a couple of um clarifying language um [1:06:00] pieces added to the appendix so appendix one at the back to just clarify um the [1:06:06] health and safety site committee guidelines so again two minor changes to a12 but just trying to create a little [1:06:12] bit more clarity about our health and safety District committee versus having [1:06:18] those at the site okay thank you are there any [1:06:24] questions on policy 812 fabulous thank you to our [1:06:31] administrators that put in all the work to make sure these are ready um that means this slate of policies that we [1:06:37] discussed here will move forward to the board for Action at our May meeting [1:06:43] right thank you policy committee appreciate it all right we're going to move on to [1:06:50] our action items do I have a motion to approve the international travel recommendations [1:06:56] so moved is there a second second outstanding I'd like to [1:07:03] welcome back um director of teaching and learning jod D Hubert to discuss these travel requests thank you chair Alan [1:07:11] very good evening Dr Stanley board directors colleagues and community members um our two travel um [1:07:16] international travel experiences for this evening that we are um approving our one is the travel experience to [1:07:23] Vancouver Canada um that's in connection with model un at the high school and the [1:07:29] second is a travel experience to Montreal and Quebec that is run through Valley View Middle School in connection [1:07:35] with French immersion programming both of these have been brought to discussion and so I'm going to turn it over if [1:07:41] there are any further questions at this time I don't have a question I would [1:07:47] just like to clarify for anyone watching that um the Montreal trip is one that we [1:07:53] run it's not a neutral trip it's one that we run and then the Vancouver trip normally is a national trip through [1:08:01] model un that um it's they annually have this um event it just so happens that [1:08:07] it's in Vancouver this year which is why it's an international travel request so I just wanted to clarify those two [1:08:13] things yeah um and um now that I've done that are there any other questions um or [1:08:19] comments from board members regarding these before we vote outstanding [1:08:25] um we will now vote um Again by vo call on the international travel [1:08:32] recommendations allenberg I arum hi Barry I Birdman hi gabler I man I I by [1:08:45] vot to six six to zero the international tra travel recommendations are approved thank you very much so I have a motion [1:08:52] to approve the reauthorization of the teacher evaluation and alternative compensation prr memorandum of [1:09:00] understanding so moved is there a second [1:09:06] second let's mark uh Michael down for that one um we have director of teaching and [1:09:13] learning jod D St hbert teacher program facilitator liby sandvic and do we have [1:09:19] special education teacher that tonight no tonight thank [1:09:24] you for asking no problem no problem highlight I know I know okay um thank [1:09:30] you and go ahead okay thank you again chair allenburg um Libby sck and I are [1:09:36] here um we have already brought this report also to discussion at a board workshop and then at a board meeting I'm [1:09:42] gonna let Libby just highlight um what happened when we went to the teacher um evaluation committee and then we'll turn [1:09:48] it over for any questions or additional comments yes on March 14th I brought um [1:09:55] theou to em um for action and they did [1:10:01] approve the new mou um and did not have any questions or concerns with the document as [1:10:10] presented board members do you have any questions or comments about this agenda [1:10:17] item okay hearing no questions um or comments um we'll now move to a v call [1:10:24] vote enberg hi arum hi Barry hi Birdman [1:10:32] hi gaer Hi man I um by a vote of six to zero the [1:10:39] reauthorization of the teacher evaluation and alternative Compensation Program memorandum of understanding is [1:10:45] approved thank you team for your work on this I appreciate it and the rest of the [1:10:50] board does as well yeah thank you thank you um do I have a motion to app appr the unified project search [1:10:58] proposal so moved is there a second [1:11:04] second I'd like to welcome director of student Support Services Jody remsing here to present this item to [1:11:18] us I'm just having a trouble a little bit of trouble with my camera this evening getting it turned on no worries [1:11:25] okay I apologize yeah all right well good evening Madam chair um Dr Stanley [1:11:31] and members of the board it's my pleasure to be here to talk to you about um project search a really exciting [1:11:37] collaboration opportunity um that I'm bringing forth um tonight for you to consider um it originally came to the [1:11:45] district from um the Minnesota Department of Education seeking collaboration with um souie Fairview [1:11:52] Fairview um Southdale Hospital the Minnesota Department of Employment and economic development otherwise known as [1:11:59] deed um for our district to consider hosting a a collaboration with project [1:12:04] search at Fairview Southdale hospital providing for an um a 9-month internship [1:12:10] opportunity for students in their final year of transition programming where they would be able to participate in [1:12:16] three different internships that allow for the students to really immerse themselves in Hands On [1:12:23] Learning um the exciting thing about project search is it's an established program where students hold really good [1:12:30] um post School outcomes where they are able to develop marketable skills project search really works on making [1:12:37] sure that students have transferable skills and so they really focus on five of the 10 most in demand careers 70% of [1:12:46] students are employed following their internship and over 40% are even asked [1:12:52] to stay on by the host um host business so it's a um a really interesting [1:12:57] opportunity for us it allows the um opportunity for the district to start moving into some transition programming [1:13:04] on a a small scale for select students within our district and um we're just [1:13:09] excited about the opportunity I know that I've spoken before with the board at a work session and also at different [1:13:15] committee meetings and so I don't want to go through everything um all over again in detail but I would be happy to [1:13:22] answer any questions or to provide clarification on any questions you may have regarding our proposal this [1:13:29] evening board members do you have questions or clarifications or [1:13:37] comments just excited about the opportunity I'm really glad that we were able to put some like this [1:13:42] together thank you I wish you could see my face because I'm beaming right now yeah yeah I I really appreciate you [1:13:49] bringing this forward um uh director reming I think the ability to offer [1:13:55] enhanced programming and at the same time have it not cost the district any more money is brilliant so um thank you [1:14:03] for doing that um especially for this group of students I'm super excited to see um it in action next year so thank [1:14:10] you thank you uh if there's nothing else we'll now move to a [1:14:15] vote allenburg I Aram hi Barry hi B hi [1:14:24] gabler I man I by a vote of six to zero the unified [1:14:30] project search proposal is approved do I have a motion to approve [1:14:36] policies 401 402 403 404 405 423 503 5 [1:14:45] 513 and 719 so move is there a second [1:14:52] second policy chair gaer yes um policy chair as policy committee [1:15:00] has been very busy we have um these committee these policies that you saw at [1:15:06] last month's meeting there are two policies that I want to draw your attention to um the first one is policy [1:15:14] 719 um that was brought back to the committee after our work session to [1:15:19] authorize attaching an updated appendix that incorporates the state's approval [1:15:25] of the district terms application relating to 504 documents so it's the same policy that you saw last month the [1:15:32] only change is on page 38 there is one line um that is adds clarification that [1:15:40] um what our retention policy is going to be around 504s so are there any questions in [1:15:47] regards to any that that [1:15:52] change okay great and then um policy [1:15:58] 403 um I'm going to ask director sailor to just speak a little bit um I [1:16:04] appreciate the board's questions at last month's meeting about um clearing up [1:16:10] some of the language in regards to the new legalization of marijuana and so um [1:16:16] I'm going to let director sailor talk about how she modified this policy from [1:16:21] the last time that you've seen it thank you director [1:16:27] gaer yes so following our our discussion [1:16:33] at the work session on the 26th of March um we brought this back to policy [1:16:39] committee to make a couple of additions what we did is add the definition [1:16:45] section um section or section three and specifically um reviewed this policy [1:16:53] policy 403 in line with policy 418 um which is our dread free workplace [1:17:01] policy as well and so aligning those adding those next to to each other we [1:17:09] added the relevant definitions to Aid the reader to understand the newly um [1:17:16] added drugs to policy 43 that are prohibited um in the workplace by this [1:17:23] policy um and then also made a made that [1:17:30] modification under um under section four under [1:17:39] misconduct specifically under paragraph 7 to include medical cannabis non- [1:17:46] intoxicate non- intoxicating canono and edible cannaboid products to the list of [1:17:56] drugs that employees are prohibited from using on the job or off the job if it [1:18:04] would impact their performance um within their position as well and so those were [1:18:10] the the changes that we made in um response to the good discussion that we [1:18:17] had at the work session are there any questions so can you clarify where are [1:18:23] the definition um they're under so there's a new [1:18:29] definition SE added and it's uh the new [1:18:34] section three of policy 403 I don't know but I think we have an [1:18:43] old version I think so too this the C current version looks like it was not [1:18:49] uploaded to the board packet oh okay so I think that we're going um I think [1:18:58] we're going to have to let's hold on that one we're gonna have to hold on that one okay because we [1:19:05] don't have the updated version okay in the packet okay um sorry no that's okay it was a [1:19:14] great explanation I was like I I I don't see anything that she's talking about so [1:19:20] and there's great she made great work on this policy for so we will put that on the docket you will see that in June [1:19:27] okay may is our next month so we will have that up for action with the Slate of of um the other policies so we'll [1:19:36] make sure that we have that that uploaded the correct one uploaded okay thank you yeah sorry about that so I [1:19:44] have a motion to we one sorry I misspoke we have one more we have one more guest to speak to um policy 503 Dr smle was [1:19:54] going to speak to the changes because that was also there was some questions on this at last month's meeting so I [1:20:02] wanted to give Dr smle an opportunity to speak to the changes he made to that so part thank you um part of what [1:20:09] we discussed in the uh work session was to add a reference to appendix 2 and [1:20:17] then to create some clarity around the um a specific bullet defining what we [1:20:23] mean by kind of breaking down unique learning challenges um and so we rewrote that [1:20:31] particular bullet in the policy based on feedback from the work [1:20:41] session does anyone have any questions about that [1:20:50] policy okay great thank you Dr SM [1:20:57] okay um could I please have a motion to um remove policy 403 from our action [1:21:03] item I'm sorry policy 503 from our action item no [1:21:09] 403 oh I was getting confused may I please have a motion to remove policy [1:21:16] 403 is there a second [1:21:22] second oh uh we need to do a roll call vote to remove policy 403 from our [1:21:28] action item allenberg I arum hi Barry hi [1:21:41] Birdman sorry I gaer I man [1:21:48] I uh the motion carries um so policy 403 has been removed from our action item so [1:21:55] we can now do a roll call vote um to approve all the other policies um with [1:22:01] the removal of policy 43 allenburg hi arum hi [1:22:11] Barry Barry hi Birdman hi [1:22:17] gabler I manam I uh the moot motion pass action passes [1:22:25] 6 to Zer and the policies are approved so thank you policy committee [1:22:31] and we will see 4 three back next month for an action item again um are there board leadership or [1:22:38] committee updates uh director [1:22:43] B yes um I am the thank you chair elenberg I am the representative at the [1:22:49] Early Learning Center and um they wanted to call attention to this week is being [1:22:57] the week of the young child and so it's uh the Early Learning Center has all sorts of activities that they are doing [1:23:03] to recognize this week and mayor Hopland has declared this April 6th through the 12th the week of the young child in [1:23:10] Idina and so um we're just focused on the needs of young children and their families and it recognizes the Early [1:23:17] Childhood programs and services that meet those needs so um you will be [1:23:23] probably seeing some social media posts about um some of the great things happening over at the Early Learning [1:23:28] Center and just drawing attention to um this week of recognition in that great [1:23:34] I'd love that excellent um director [1:23:42] Barry you're on mute charl okay there we go um the Lac is [1:23:48] updating our community contact lists so we're developing a new form where people can give us their contact information so [1:23:55] that if advocacy is needed for one of our legislative priorities we can more efficiently activate people uh to [1:24:02] contact our legislators so look for that coming soon and sorry about that pgy back on [1:24:10] that too sorry um we're probably before our next meeting we're going to have a lot some advocacy items to for each of [1:24:18] the people um that we'll be meeting about tomorrow at our Lac meeting or on Wednesday about our Lac meeting so right [1:24:24] thank you Lac committee I appreciate that and really good idea I appreciate that um I don't have a committee update [1:24:30] per se but I wanted to just take the opportunity to thank our Tech Team for their outstanding job putting this [1:24:38] online meeting together and doing other presentations um in short time um it's [1:24:45] other than a couple of snapo on personal Parts it's gone I mean flawlessly so [1:24:51] thank you very much to our Tech Team um with that I'll turn it over to um [1:24:57] superintendent Stanley for any superintendent updates thanks chair Ellenburg and um [1:25:04] thanks you know for everybody who's working with the um advocacy for Lac as well really appreciate that oh my gosh [1:25:12] um week of the young child that is just fantastic so um again I had mentioned [1:25:18] this at work session um I just want to give a shout out to our robotics team I [1:25:24] had an opportunity to join the robotics um meet on Saturday up in St Cloud I [1:25:31] they are just amazing their coding just the engineering of the build of their [1:25:38] robot it is just phenomenal and it was great to be able to spend some time up there and then um was able to come back [1:25:44] down to the cities and um attend the boosters um um Athletic program uh [1:25:51] fundraiser and thank you to every everybody who attended there was great food there was a lot of laughter um I [1:26:00] was out bid I just have to say that on the girls Jersey um way out bid so [1:26:05] that's okay I needed to stay married so I wasn't going to go home paying that much and um it was just fantastic um it [1:26:15] never ceases to amaze me at just how committed our community is to our kids and um thank you to everyone who [1:26:21] coordinates that I know um I get to see and sitting out there and I know that there are so many other people um there [1:26:30] is an individual who I mean it was just an amazing um fundraiser so thank you to everyone who contributed and who [1:26:36] attended and for those who learned a little bit of line dancing as well that was kind of fun to watch that um the [1:26:44] other thing that I have I and I know it's going to take a while but bear with me because we have so many email that [1:26:49] have come in since our last meeting with people just shouting [1:26:55] to um the hilltops about different things that are great in our system so here's our first one dear superintendent [1:27:01] Stanley and the leadership team of Edina schools I felt inspired to write to you to communicate some incredible things [1:27:08] your Edina instrumental music teachers are doing in the Minnesota band Community I have recently assumed the [1:27:14] position of president of the Minnesota band Directors Association in getting to know our executive board I found it [1:27:20] impressive that so many of your music teachers are actively Eng engaged in leading our state [1:27:26] Organization for instance Geneva Fitz Fitz Simmons is our state honors jazz [1:27:33] band coordinator and former president Melody Melody Snider is our mbda [1:27:39] secretary Charles wise is runs the youth band literature session for the music [1:27:46] educators midwinter Clinic Paul Kyle not only represents the din schools as the associate director of Minnesota [1:27:53] symphonic wind but also is actively engaged by mbda as the rep for [1:27:59] NBA national band Association um Michael mhler has served [1:28:05] mbda as well in a variety of positions these music teachers in addition to [1:28:11] Mariah hogland Chris gums Andy RoR and others are all all uppercase letters all [1:28:19] playing their instruments in adult community groups these [1:28:26] are not symbolic but Duty driven these roles are not symbolic but Duty driven [1:28:32] labor intensive roles which are entirely volunteer wow I just cannot understate [1:28:38] how supremely incredible the instrumental mu uh music educators in OS schools are I've heard that there is an [1:28:45] unspoken expectation that instrumental music educators Ina quote unquote serve [1:28:51] their profession I don't know if that was a theme established by the great Bill web or this is some philosophy [1:28:57] adopted along the way regardless you must know there are all uppercase here [1:29:03] no other districts in the state of Minnesota which are so well represented in our Minnesota professional music [1:29:10] organization as Edina your band people are the uppercase all uppercase Jewel in [1:29:16] your crown at Edina and I felt compelled to share this with you if you did not already know this thank you for [1:29:23] supporting the Fine Arts and band specifically it changes lives and [1:29:28] certainly your educators are also leaving their mark on the music scene in Minnesota this not only deserves [1:29:35] recognition but also sincere appreciation with sincerest appreciation offered Claire [1:29:41] Larson it's pretty amazing this comes from a parent Alison [1:29:48] Gartner she said hello as a parent of four kids you always love to hear about a compliment about your kids when you [1:29:54] are not around and they are out on their own I don't believe there is a better feeling as a parent well here's a [1:30:01] compliment I received on Saturday night about our Edina kids I was gifted uh [1:30:08] tickets for the hockey game on Saturday night I was there with my eighth grade daughter who attends valy viiew Middle [1:30:14] School our tickets were in the heart of the senior student section I was chatting with the Usher if uh we could [1:30:21] sit somewhere else and he said of course we were hanging out until more people [1:30:27] showed up and we could find a couple of seats we got to chatting with him he [1:30:32] said he worked every game during the tournament and that the Edina students were the most respectful and fun [1:30:39] students and that we had the best student section he said ad gets a lot of [1:30:44] hate but they are the kindest students I wanted to let you all know something [1:30:51] positive because it's always nice to hear and a lot of negative noise is [1:30:56] generally what you hear about have a wonderful week and go [1:31:02] Hornet and I can contest to that because I was at the games and um I mean we were [1:31:08] just so proud of them okay there's another one good afternoon board members and um I Wherever needed this [1:32:12] works for me and allows me to feel like I am truly meeting a need through this [1:32:17] experience I've been blessed to work with amazing professionals who get up every day to come to school and do their jobs with humility and discipline I am [1:32:25] grateful for the opportunity and would definitely encourage the school board to continue to allow building substitutes [1:32:31] to serve across the district serving on a team with other building Subs three [1:32:36] others at valy viiew middle school has been magnificent this is a great investment for weather this all tremendously well due to so much support at school carine has been a big part of [1:33:52] that she not only goes above and beyond to make sure that he is safe at school she does it in a way that doesn't make [1:33:59] him feel like he is weird or sick her kindness and dedication to her students [1:34:05] is truly a gift just wanted to pass along our gratitude that Ed din public
