[Music] welcome to agenda Edina a program summarizing the actions taken at City Hall that affect you most I'm your host dorothia Marty a long-awaited replacement is coming to the pedestrian bridge over MInnesota Highway 62 the city will hire a fabricator to help finalize plans for a new accessible pedestrian bridge the current Bridge which does not meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards was built in the 1960s and is owned and managed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation the bridge is an important piece of infrastructure connecting the Northeast and Southeast parts of Edina it's also a critical connection for pedestrians and cyclists to safely access Roslin Park and its amenities including the Aquatic Center the bridge was significantly damaged in 201 22 when it was struck twice by trucks the second Collision resulted in the closure of the bridge for most of 2022 until expensive temporary repairs were made in January 2023 since that time the city and mindat have been in discussions about replacing the bridge funding for the project has been secured with a successful State bonding request and mindat funds the project team of Bolton and M and snow kic architect was hired in June and has developed some designs with unique steel truss angles and attachments a bridge fabricator will be able to provide input on the attachment details of the facade and estimate costs at this stage and eventually make the steel truss Bridge itself we're at about 30% design for this pedestrian bridge and we're at a point where a fabricator will be able to help us estimate the true cost of the project we have a $6 million budget we want to ensure that we stay within the budget and that the bridge fabricator will do estimating help us get plans from 30 to 100% designed they'll talk to us about how they're going to transport this bridge and then we're looking at a unique feature on the bridge whether the bridge has a straight 90° steel truss structure or are we going to camber that out 10° and that's really another key point of having a fabricator is they will better be able to estimate the cost to do that work how are we going to transport it again how are we going to bring it to the site and then eventually install it over a active highway on Highway 62 if the project remains on track final bridge plans would be complete in September with construction in 2026 upon completion the city will own and be responsible for maintenance of the bridge the Opus group a prominent developer is looking to move its headquarters and they might be setting their sights on Aina Opus is proposing to tear down the four story office building at 5100 Eden Avenue and build a new 112,000 Square ft five-story office building that would potentially include a restaurant or retail space on the first floor Opus corporate headquarters would occupy a portion of the building Opus presented a sketch last month to the Edina City Council Members gave non-binding feedback on the project we think this uh site is uniquely suited to office development and given the the recent residential development in this area we think balancing that with an office use which puts daytime users in the area who can also be uh patronizes of the local businesses uh we think it's just going to make this a much more vibrant um uh mixed use node to move forward Opus would need to request a rezoning of the site variances or flexibility through a planned unit development and a site plan and subdivision or replant Opus plan replaces a previous proposal for an apartment building and retail space on the site that plan received preliminary approval in 2023 it data lost a true legend last month when Willert Iola passed away at the age of 92 following a successful career as a hockey goalie including leading the US team to an Olympic silver medal coach Ike served as the din boys hockey coach from 1958 until 1991 with the help of archival interviews of Coach Ike himself Idina TV presents coaching career coach IA signature hounds to hatat will join the hits on the bench this evening my first year at Edina High School hockey was coach Ikes first year not coaching I had grown up all these years watching my brothers play looking at the Fedora behind the bench stern look note card in hand and always wanting to play for Ike any D of hockey well uh I got here in in uh uh 5758 uh came out of the service and uh this was my first coaching job was Edina he was a motivator he was good with words he pulled you into the coaches room sometimes and he had some little one-on ones but it was all positive everything was positive and that's what I can say about him as most positive guy I've ever met at that time there was nothing written about hockey there was no manuals no books written on hockey the only way you learn as a coach is by talking to other coaches and which I did that summer I was lucky to get rehired again Bina Hockey didn't exist really I mean we had some great coaches and some people came in but you know on the term cake eaters he created the cake eaters he created the success and what I love about it he did it with an Iron Range feel of hard work and discipline he gets you into skating drills and he's kind of making you pay a little I mean you paid attention to to to what he said because there was always repercussions from and but he was so good at it ath had a rink I believe an International Falls had a rank uh indoor and that was a big deal because then you could play outside of the elements and there was no rank down in in Minneapolis at that time in U 6566 Brar was built and that really turned the tight for us uh not only for us but for our association good conditions no wind and we had some good kids coming up that were coming through the system I played' 67 68 and' 69' 69 we were the first state champions he was really good at helping you keep your cool and he'd always get on the bus and say got your blades blades mouthpiece here we go let's go play some hard-nose hockey and and let's go out there together so we won the first title in 69 and without Brar I don't think that would have been possible it really helped our program not only at the high school but at the youth program and and I said many times that you're only as strong as that youth program you go was a young kid and you say I want to be a part of that I want to be a part of that and and that's what I think has been really neat about the legacy of Idina hockey but that's what he started is I want to be a part of something everybody wanted to play for him I mean that everybody was so focused on Ika cuz he was such a predominant piece of the and everybody knew him and every little kid wanted to play for him we had some players like like a Dave melee you know who played in the National Hockey League won the Stanley Cup and they come back and they say you know the biggest thr I had was not winning the NCA Championship or Stanley Cup it was winning the Minnesota State High School Championship you know so when you hear that uh you realize that it's a big thing no question about it his story still permeates and now you look at all this stuff here it's it's here and and he's done such a great job and he's it's going to be a loss to the community to lose a pillar like that these little kids know the name AA and they know the Fedora and it's just going to be carried on and with the Statue of at Brar Arena and the goal for all of us is to live the simple humble disciplined life of Willard and lorri EA it was a struggle sometimes you know but uh the competition was so great I always felt that I had the best high school hockey job in the state of Minnesota by the time he retired as an Idina High School coach in 1991 coach Ike earned 616 career victories eight state champ championships and was named Minnesota's High School hockey coach of the year six times February is Black History Month since 1976 every US president has endorsed a specific theme for Black History Month this year's theme is African-Americans and labor this month pay tribute to the significant contributions of African-Americans to the workforce throughout history thank
