gamut of discussion items um we are going to talk about the need for additional uh time for [2:58] professional development calendar uh director Edwards is going to provide an update on our marketing efforts we have [3:05] several policies um and then we move into action um um board is bringing forward the [3:12] response to the American Indian vote of non-c concurrence um we have an update [3:18] on intermediate District 287 long-term facilities maintenance expenditures um [3:24] sixth through eth grade language arts curriculum adoption recommendation really excited about that Schoolboard [3:30] election resolution um to move to even years um policies to act on and then um [3:38] Committee in superintendent ofes thank you so much Dr Stanley um [3:45] with that we're going to move on to our excellence in action and this month's excellence in action is going to be [3:51] featuring cornelia's craft Bazaar which I did not realize is a 40 plus year [3:58] fundraising tradition run by our students um we are joined by fifth grade teacher Heather enam and malio Kei and [4:05] they're going to present some information about this so thank you and [4:11] welcome thank you all right um it is oh let's see if [4:18] you can go to the next slide and then the next there we go this [4:23] upcoming year it will be our 45th annual Craft bizar um and the funny thing was [4:28] is my ex-husband when went to Cornelia and remembers doing the craft bizar so his mom still had some of his crafts [4:34] that he had made so I thought that was kind of funny uh next slide and then Molly is gonna talk about [4:41] this page I don't see that Molly has come in [4:47] yet oh no okay then I'll go for her uh so this is a project that starts long before December so starting usually end [4:54] of October beginning November our fifth graders they start researching local charities that help the people in our [5:00] community each student chooses a charity that they really feel strongly about and then they write a persuasive essay um [5:07] trying to get the rest of the class to want to vote for their charity at the end they are all the classes each vote [5:15] and you have two people from each class representing their Charities so that the day of we have a total of eight [5:21] Charities that are going to be represented oh here comes Molly if you go to the next [5:27] slide um some of the rules when it comes to choosing the charity that you can um show to the class it has to be a local [5:34] organization so even though we do really like feed my serving children and things like that we want it to benefit our [5:40] community so in the Twin Cities area it has to help people we love animals but we want to be able to help people and it [5:47] cannot be a charity that we have located we have donated to in the past three years next [5:56] slide um in 2019 uh the sandwich man was our charity um it provides food and [6:02] supplies to those in our community without [6:07] homes uh in 2020 we did can do canines and I know that I just said no animals but this actually benefits people [6:14] because it helps raise guide dogs and um medical alert dogs for people so it's [6:20] service dogs for people who need them no let's let you do this one okay [6:27] so in 2021 we did the Ronald McDon Ronald McDonald House it provides meals [6:34] housing and activities and that year we raised and that year we raised [6:40] 3,51 3,511 [6:46] yeah and then you can do this one uh for the pinky swear Foundation it's for [6:52] families staying in the hospital that can't get Foods or snacks during this day kids for the money we're going to [6:58] give them kids kid received financial support for the medical bills and other [7:03] things and for this F we raised 3,486 yep and actually if you ever have [7:09] a chance you should go to their website because that one it made I don't think I know any adult that watched the [7:15] presentation with the videos that didn't make them cry so if you're looking for a good cry Fest that's a good one to go [7:20] look at and then students they make their [7:25] crafts to sell to our school Community every classroom in our building building signs up for a time slot to come in and [7:31] they walk as you can see in the bottom left hand corner they kind of walk through all of our classrooms every kid [7:36] has a table set up with the stuff that they have made and their prices and then when the shopping is done the fifth graders that were chosen from each class [7:43] so if it was Haddie and Audrey from my class they would go and do their presentations for their Charities to the [7:48] other three fifth grade classes so in all the kids will hear about eight different charities and then after the [7:55] presentations we vote as a grade level and I think um they make their crafts oh [8:02] I think I did this one sorry this one was already supposed to be off keep going Molly did you want to talk about [8:08] this page sure thank you sorry for joining late um uh but yeah not only has this [8:15] service learning project helped teach our kids how to conduct research write persuasive essays and count money but it [8:23] also helps build empathy and just to Echo what Heather said um no adult nor I [8:28] don't think any of the kids kids um had a dry eye when they watched that video with the pinky swear Foundation it was [8:34] it's very touching and um just a really great way of authentically building empathy um so we like we'll get to in a [8:43] minute to um a lot of the Charities are have a personal connection to our students um and we've seen these a few [8:51] times get voted into the final round and um that's just a really neat way for [8:56] also to build empathy because they're talking about something that has affected them in some way personally um [9:02] and then I know Hattie's going to talk about the winning charity that we're presenting the check to tomorrow um [9:08] Jack's basket which is an organization that I didn't know about and I think that um you know even just presenting to [9:15] the students in the classes she's helped not only raise money but really build [9:20] awareness and maybe even have some activism in the future so um yeah thanks [9:26] we can go on and I think Haddie will tell us more um Jack's basket is important to me [9:32] because of my brother Brooks uh Brooks has Down syndrome my parents use Jack's basid to help them with Brooks um Brooks [9:40] is important to me and I think he that he has made more people care for babies kids and adults with Down [9:47] Syndrome thank [9:54] you what a great presentation and the two students that [10:00] are joining us can you guys introduce yourselves to the board and Community go ahead tell them who you are I'm Andre um [10:07] and I'm pie and they're both in my class and because I live on Cornelia Drive they're both my neighbors that's [10:14] outstanding thank you both for coming and joining us and um both too the consent agenda is approved and we're going to move on to our discussion items for the evening and [12:43] our first one is a discussion about a request for additional um District [12:48] professional a request for a district professional calendar day I'm in the [12:53] 2024 2025 calendar year and we are joined by director of teaching and [13:00] learning Jody D St hbert to talk about this with us thank [13:06] you thank you good evening Dr Stanley Chair allenburg uh board directors [13:11] community members and colleagues as noted in the description on the front page of the board report that's in front [13:18] of you professional development is crucial for our Educators and the direct [13:24] impact that it has on our students is um UND it's really hard to to state the full impact that um we see when our [13:31] students um reap the benefits of strong professional development currently on the ad 2425 calendar we have um five PD [13:41] days listed um our calendar committee did a great job and getting that in front of us a while ago three of those [13:48] designated days are very specific for district and building collaboration on [13:53] District professional development the other two days are either um conferences or professional development depending on [14:01] how the site chooses to work that out so as we look to imal um as we look forward [14:07] to next year and the balance of ensuring that we have students in school actively [14:12] actively engaged in their learning and our excellent staff to ensure time in [14:17] school is the highest quality of learning as possible I'm here tonight to [14:23] recommend and have a discussion on adding a professional development day to the calendar for 2425 in the spring that [14:31] would change the calendar to have four days that are district and building [14:36] colled and facilitated professional development days and then we would still have the remaining two days that would [14:43] be District conferences and District professional development um the reason for this request is that we have a lot [14:49] of topics for PD ahead of us not only next year but into the future um the [14:54] topics that we have listed and there um many of them are listed in the board report are topics that we have come to [15:01] um we've come to decisions on that they're critical and important through collaborations and conversations with [15:08] our teachers and with our staff with our Administration and the other um main [15:13] factor that's involved in this conversation is our read Act and the read act we know is really really [15:20] important we're excited to be implementing it as having great benefits on our students and it is requiring a [15:26] lot of professional development time so as all of you also know we have chosen letters as our professional development [15:34] um within read act requirements and our phase one teachers that are involved in letters every single day of PD next year [15:42] of the three that are allocated as that building and District collaboration professional development day would be [15:49] taken um would be letters so staff that are in phase one which is primarily K through three teachers would be doing [15:56] professional development for the full day around letters and that leaves then really no wiggle room to engage in other [16:03] components of literacy in our comprehensive literacy plan steam social emotional learning all of those things [16:09] that we've talked about that align directly to our strategic plan so um I [16:15] do want to note and point out that on the last page I think it's the last page of the report but it's towards the end [16:22] we did highlight I highlighted that other districts are facing the same kind of dilemma of how they do this Balancing [16:28] Act and and um fit in the react requirements we also um paying attention [16:34] to other important PD across the system and so on that page there's other um districts we did a poll and these are [16:41] some districts that we heard back from that are adding most of them are adding professional development days um there's [16:47] a lot more detail that can go into that uh graph but it definitely highlights and shows a pattern that there are many [16:53] districts around us that are doing the same thing for next year and then finally I just wanted to make sure I note that um I've been talking close uh [17:00] and working directly with Randy Dr smel um as he leads our calendar committee [17:05] work and Jason doctor and um we recognize and we're proposing that we're putting this day towards the end of the [17:12] year to Springtime because we want to be cognizant of our of our PD days um that [17:21] we want to be cognizant of the number of days that we have students doing their um being in front of sorry I'm [17:27] distracted Erica sorry about that I shouldn't be um just wanted to say that we're working with Jason because we're [17:34] cognizant of those number of days that are on the calendar and and currently we have um w we have a cushion right we [17:41] have wiggle rooms so that if we came across some unexpected unknown circumstances often in Minnesota it's [17:46] winter and it's snow and it's weather where we have to have a day of no school then we could work with both the [17:53] calendar committee and our em Representatives just to um address those situations and part partnership so with [18:00] all of those things said I'm sure there are questions that you have and more discussion to engage in and I will open [18:05] it up to the group for those questions at this time thank you director DC cubert um [18:12] board members uh director Birman so the proposal at the moment is [18:18] for one additional day in April of 2025 looking at the list of other [18:24] districts that are looking at adding anywhere between two to five days I'm just curious as to when you look at the [18:30] need for the professional development versus what our calendar allows in that scale was one just kind [18:37] of like the happy medium that you thought could work or do we actually have an established need for more than one day but we're struggling to figure [18:43] out where we could fit that in the calendar that's a great question um because we are um I'm gonna say like I [18:50] don't know where every district is at but because we did start letters prior to react we started that professional [18:55] development pre-act honestly really asking for this one um is is exactly [19:01] what we need and we want to be careful and conscious of having our students in front of our teachers right and also [19:07] balancing the needs that our teachers have to to stay healthy and balanced with their professional development but truly we feel very comfortable adding [19:14] that one and that no more needs to be added great thank you very much director [19:20] huie um my question is on the timing of this additional day in April um I know [19:29] specifically at the secondary level when you're getting kids ready for AP tests [19:35] Etc taking one more day out of their their class time can be [19:42] impactful so just wondering if um why a I mean you sort of explained why April [19:49] but is there an opportunity to shift to a different part of the year um so that's a great question um [19:56] when we look at any month there are unique challenges with it but you are absolutely right that the spring becomes [20:02] um complicated with all the testing going on across the system so if um what [20:07] we're doing today is discussion and then we do have this coming back to the board for approval in June if the board does [20:13] approve the request then we do need to sit down with the calendar committee and really look at the best date um [20:21] considering all those factors Jennifer so I would really want to make sure um that we include stakeholder voice in [20:27] that final decision of the dat and um we we thought the spring would be smart thinking about the weather factors [20:34] and the additional days and yet there are so many variables to consider you noted some and they're important that we [20:41] have that comprehensive conversation with the next step if [20:46] approved are there other questions about this um a question that I had um [20:53] director DC Hubert is do you feel [20:58] um on a go forward basis that we're going to need an additional training day [21:03] because we're not going to train all of our teachers um react in one year um I [21:12] guess I would just ask between now and next month if you [21:17] guys feel that this is something that we're going to need a day this year and a day next year I would [21:23] rather vote on all of that together than [21:28] keep changing our calendar on an annual basis yes so I know Michael asked about [21:33] the number of days this year but I guess an additional question to that is are we [21:38] going to another day next year so that's a great question I feel like I can answer that now really with um quite a [21:45] bit of confidence because we are trying to plan two three years out um that we we really uniquely need that for this [21:52] year um the phase one educators will most of them right will have new [21:57] teachers and when I say phase one that's um K through three teachers as well as special ed Educators and um a great [22:05] majority of them will be done with letters um PD by the end of this year [22:10] and then we are still waiting from mde on what that phase two um training might [22:15] look like however I'm very confident that we can balance that um it's it's [22:21] always a complicated puzzle right but I don't I don't expect that we'll meet an additional Day next year [22:28] great thank you so much and uh just kudos to your team for all the hard work [22:35] getting us to the point where we are right now that we don't have to take five days off next year I just and [22:42] nothing against the districts that do it's important work for all of our districts but the fact that we are where [22:49] we are is because of a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication um not just your [22:55] team but our Educators 100 there a lot of training our educators are going through and so thank you to everyone in [23:02] our district for their commitment to this program Direct bin I just wanted to [23:09] Echo that because District 287 we just did this at the at the board meeting last week where they were outlining [23:14] their training and development under this program um and what the extent that they were going to have to do uh I [23:20] commented that we were already ahead of the game because we've already been doing this prior to the react being [23:25] enacted um and listening to our other member districts of 28 s where they were all struggling to kind of figure out how [23:30] they're going to make that happen so I just wanted to Echo that that that came out within some of the other West Metro districts that were already partnered [23:36] with on 287 so Kudos yeah thank you both and I think [23:42] acknowledging the all right um director Woodard has a [25:44] number of policies that he's going to review for us and um he'll be skipping around it will be in consecutive order [25:51] so I will turn it over to you m to do you want to start with 7:14 [25:58] absolutely uh good evening members of the board those might be in attendance with us virtually tonight U maybe [26:03] there's people hanging out in person I can't see you um policy 714 District use [26:08] of U or District owned vehicle use um this policy really there are two main changes that are being proposed um the [26:15] first is in paragraph a we thought it was appropriate to add and name the other departments which may operate [26:20] District owned vehicles um such as the athletics department and as well as our early learning school and then in [26:26] paragraph B we thought it appropriate remove the language regarding the use of District owned property for personal use [26:34] um not only as a general rule of thumb would we like to avoid this situation there can also be tax implications um [26:40] for the employee that would use those um those vehicles for personal use so those were the proposed changes for policy [26:49] 714 I'm just going to keep on going then yeah board members did you have any questions on [26:56] 714 okay great then director woodard's going to talk about 716 vending machines [27:03] yeah policy 716 for vending machines no subs substantive changes to report the only change of note was the elimination [27:10] of paragraphs B and C of section six um the reason for this proposed elimination is due to redundancy other policies [27:16] namely our accounting policy address these [27:22] items board members any questions on 716 vendy machines [27:29] okay thank you uh and then 718 construction and remodeling of facilities and [27:35] grounds yeah so we're proposing an amendment to paragraph C of section three which currently states that change [27:42] orders must be board approved if they are funded by bonds um we don't believe that language to be relevant at this [27:48] time since the majority of our construction is actually funded um by cash on hand rather than bonded debt um [27:54] we did however propose an amendment to name a specific dollar amount um which would trigger changes be reviewed by the [28:00] school board and that amount is $175,000 um we've also completely removed appendix one or I which was [28:07] specific to the 2015 school building Bond referendum which for obvious reasons is no longer [28:15] needed board members any questions on policy 718 D have two questions you know I'm a [28:22] policy stickler um so my first question is [28:28] under the general statement of policy um I was wondering if it should [28:35] include um it says the district will meet all state and local construction requirements and I was wondering why we [28:41] don't include Federal um for things like the American Disabilities [28:49] Act it just seemed odd that it was only state and [28:54] local yeah that would be a worthwhile thing to add um a lot of the state statute is derived from from federal [29:01] guidance and were we to um have construction approved by the Department of Education there's a whole review and [29:06] comment process that we have to go through um they would be lining that up against federal law as well but yet it [29:12] is worth pointing that out in statute or in our own policy rather I would just never want anyone to think if they're [29:18] looking at it that we're not following federal law so which I know we are I just I thought it was worthwhile to [29:25] include that um and then the the only other thing was um just a notation that [29:31] um I'm sorry I'm looking between two different documents um was under [29:39] 3B just to update um the board Finance at facilities [29:45] committee at the end of [29:52] B I will note that down thank you [30:03] thank you chair enberg for those um those additions we'll make sure those get changed for next month board members [30:10] any other questions on 17 18 okay then we will move on to policy [30:19] 720 uniform Grant guidance policy regarding federal revenue [30:25] sources yeah so this policy is specific to the accounting for the accounting and use of federal funds which is um [30:31] somewhat Superfluous since we do have an accounting policy that generally covers um not only federal funds but all funds [30:37] that flow through the school district um we also have a separate single audit that's performed by our external [30:42] Auditors each year for use of federal funds within the school district um as a result no sub substantive changes have [30:48] been proposed only formatting and reference [30:54] updates any questions on policy 720 [31:02] okay then uh we're moving forward to policy 802 which is disposition of obsolete [31:10] equipment and materials uh no updates of note to this actual policy language however there [31:16] were some material uh changes to the appendix as it stands the appendix is written in such a way that um it [31:22] reflects Municipal of Contracting law in the state of Minnesota from the standpoint of the purchaser however this policy policy is really in reference to [31:29] the standpoint of a seller um so we've updated the language to reflect that um and provide further [31:36] Clarity board members any questions on policy [31:43] 802 okay then we have policy 804 uh energy utilization [31:51] management uh no material changes proposed at this time board members any questions on this [32:01] policy all right and the last one that director Woodard has for tonight is [32:06] policy 808 naming facilities and educational programs thank you uh [32:12] director Gable again no material changes proposed at this time for policy 808 any questions on [32:21] 808 great thank you director Woodard for all your work on all of these policies [32:26] and just making sure that we're correct and we really appreciate it okay then we are going to move uh to [32:35] the newest doctor in the house uh Dr beair uh [32:40] who deserves a big round of applause for defending her her doctorate [32:48] dissertation what would that be called my dissertation the oral dis so yeah she [32:53] is now Dr beare so congratulations and she is going to talk to us about two different policies this [33:00] evening the first one is policy 103 and equal educational [33:05] opportunity and hello board and community members with policy 103 I'm [33:11] going to ask for it to be brought back to the policy committee because I made a [33:17] slight mistake not realizing that our policy 103 is mba's policy 102 and they [33:23] do have some recommendations for number D with some clarifications so that is a [33:28] mistake that I made so ask to bring it back because it is a it is a change that needs to be discussed in the policy [33:37] committee okay and chair elenberg we won't have to vote no because we're not voting protion on this [33:45] so we'll just go ahead and move on to thank you for catching that Dr beare um [33:52] then we will move on to your second policy uh of the evening policy 801 equal access by students to school [34:00] facilities so on policy 801 the uh change that we did was we added a letter [34:07] C because we did have two append appendices on that policy that were not [34:12] referenced in the policy so we asked um we added that so that people know that [34:18] the appendices are there which was really important for people to understand the appendices are there [34:23] because they give the further explanation into what needs to be done [34:29] uh if a group is if a student group is wanting to rent school facilities and [34:36] the application that they need to fill out and turn into school and then in [34:42] appendices think it's oh two that is we updated that with [34:51] information that matches the online system that the district uses and that [34:57] system does require a name of the group the student group that is asking to use [35:03] the facility and the purpose of the [35:08] meeting okay thank you board members do you have any questions on policy [35:19] 801 okay great well then we will see 801 back next month for action and then Dr [35:26] beair is going to take a look at 103 and we will bring that forward for discussion at next month's meeting so [35:33] thank you all right then next up we have uh [35:40] director remsing who is going to talk to us about policy [35:46] 721 service animals in school okay good evening members of the board for policy [35:53] 721 um there are some minor just um Chang changes that are made with just [35:59] immaterial wording and things like that um we did add to the definition section [36:04] the definition of a trainer um as far as training service an animals and then an [36:10] entire section on access to programs and activities and ways that um inquiries [36:16] can be made regarding the use of the surface animal um additional changes that were [36:21] made um were just under non-service animals [36:27] as an accommodation for employees letting um folks know that if they choose to bring an an animal to work [36:33] they would need to re um take that request before human resources and then we've also updated the citations below [36:40] um accordingly and that's the only changes [36:46] that we have for policy 721 okay board members do you have any [36:51] questions about policy 721 yes chair Ard I have two questions [36:59] um one I was wondering if you could explain under [37:05] 4D um an indiv it says an individual with a disability may not be required to [37:10] provide documentation such as proof that the animal has been certified trained or [37:16] licensed as um the animal and I was just [37:22] wondering is that under the law or why [37:28] why that was added yeah that comes out of the law and I believe that it was case law that that determination was [37:34] made okay thank you and then the only other question I had was um I didn't [37:39] know if it should be added to this policy or not but I was wondering if we wanted to make it clear somewhere that [37:48] any trainer Handler of a service animal is required to comply with all [37:54] background checks or any other checks that volunteers are required [38:00] to do so I don't know if we want to reference our other policy but I just [38:05] want to make sure that it's very clear that um anyone entering our school is [38:12] required to do all Security checks so I think that's a good point um and [38:20] maybe what we can do is follow up and find out the correct place for that whether it's within this policy or maybe [38:25] it is covered by another policy as far as human resources goes or under our visitor [38:31] policy so and again like I said maybe it's maybe it's very clear in our policy [38:36] about background checks that handlers are part of that but I just want to make sure that whichever policy [38:44] it is that it is very clear that again that um it a background check [38:52] is required or whatever Security check is required so that's a great point I think we could [38:58] um Dr remsey maybe we can I feel like that could easily be added to that definition or even if we cross reference [39:05] our volunteer policy at the end of that would be an easy way to address that [39:12] okay I'll follow up with that um addition thank you any other questions [39:18] about this policy great thank you and this was one of those policies where this is why I [39:25] love being on policy you learn a lot about school districts and how they operate and uh so thank you for for [39:31] bringing this one forward okay and then uh next we're [39:37] going to move to Dr Leland who is going to talk to us about policy 813 which is [39:44] our Aquatics policy good evening everyone uh yes I am [39:50] here to talk about the aquatics policy there's really no substantive changes at [39:57] all but it was a good uh it was a good conversation in terms of just becoming familiar again with our processes and [40:04] procedures when it comes to our two pools at one at Valley View and one at South View um but again no no changes in [40:12] terms of anything significant just some clarifications around wording and [40:19] checking to make sure we were doing our due diligence when it comes to anything that we have to have um examined by [40:27] henan County in terms of our equipment and we are all up to date with [40:32] that thank you board members any questions about [40:39] policy 813 Aquatics yes Terry Ellenberg I don't [40:46] know if this is the appropriate policy um if this is referring just more to [40:53] equipment and policies around lifeguards but I I was wondering if this would be the [41:00] appropriate policy for somewhere else to talk about maintenance of pools and [41:05] specifically stating that all of our pools are maintained subject to federal [41:10] state and local laws like the the Minnesota State Pool code to make sure [41:16] that we're letting the public know that not only is our equipment our our [41:21] lifeguard all of these things up to code but our actual pools are up to code [41:28] D director wooder do we have a policy around pool [41:33] maintenance yeah director G and chair Alber I believe policy 812 or health and safety policy um would cover such items [41:41] um such as pool maintenance then I wonder if we should [41:46] let's see is that cross referenced here at the bottom 812 would that [41:54] uh director wood and leand director would that make sense for us to make that as a cross reference in this one or [42:01] do we feel like that's covered as long as it's covered somewhere like I said I wasn't sure if [42:06] this was the appropriate policy I just wanted to make sure that somewhere since [42:12] I wasn't sure if there was a buildings and maintenance policy this is talking about pools that's somewhere that we [42:18] state that our pools are up to code I would recommend that it doesn't need to be cross referenced I think that it [42:25] stands alone in its proper bucket [42:30] administrators would you be okay with feel comfortable with that I do I would just add though that [42:35] a12 doesn't specifically name pools it just mentions the health and safety plan in general um which is kind of an [42:42] umbrella term um and also future proofs the district for future laws that come [42:47] into place and would keep our policy modern so maybe it's just something to [42:52] look into because I do know like especially with all the work that's been done in the last 10 years around like [42:59] safety valves and pools and stuff like that I do think that it is a good [43:04] thing to state to the public that we maintain our pools to code for state law [43:11] and any local if this is the appropriate policy it's totally fine with that I just think [43:17] at some point it would be good whether it's in a building grounds policy or something to make sure that we are not [43:24] only doing that but that we're stating that we do that okay I think that's a really good point [43:31] um I will talk with director Woodard and see like maybe that policy that a12 [43:40] is um coming up for review or when that is so we'll we'll touch base and figure policy oops I think you're on mute there we [46:09] go uh you hear me now yeah we looked at this for clarity and there are just a [46:15] small additions or changes um specifically under Section B for [46:20] security that the district will ensure video recordings are retained in accordance with the district's record [46:26] retention schedule which is also cross referenced at the bottom of the [46:33] policy perfect board members did you have any questions about policy [46:41] 717 chair Ellenberg maybe I should just go back on policy [46:47] committee um I do have one quick question it's my last question um I was [46:53] wondering if under section four under r VI and use of video and electronic [46:59] surveillance in the first SE first number one when we talk about video [47:06] surveillance will be viewed by School District Personnel um do our school resource [47:14] officers count as school district Personnel or do we need to clarify in [47:20] our policy that um our school Source officers and [47:28] or law enforcement can view our video surveillance if need [47:36] be um I'm not 100% sure but I thought that our resource officers were employed [47:44] not employed directly by the district but serviced with the district and so um I believe that's the [47:52] case but I'm not sure yeah they're not employed directly by the district I love that that language that you use Nathaniel about um Ser you know they're [48:00] to service within the district and they work directly in um within administrator to get access to that um chair elenberg [48:07] and so an administrator is reviewing that information along with um the [48:15] SR Dr Stanley is that excuse me is that as a anytime the administrators is [48:21] looking at that are they always with an SRO or they're only invited when it's [48:26] deemed appropriate from an administrative perspective yeah whenever it would require the need to have an SRO [48:33] involved then that is when they would bring in the SRO so Erica do you think it needs to be [48:41] stated as such in this policy to have that clarification is that where your question was coming [48:48] from yes I was wondering if we need to explicitly state in our policy because [48:53] we're stating in our policy that administ ation will look at it and I'm [49:00] just wondering if since we are stating who can access it if we need to state [49:07] that or if we don't or if it's obvious that if there's a something happens that law enforcement [49:15] can access it I just I don't know I just wanted to ask the [49:23] question I mean I think you know we certainly bring bring in um um Ed Police [49:29] Department anytime there's something criminal that has occurred and we need to have their feedback on that send it [49:35] to them so that they can um review that sometimes they can review that a little [49:41] um with greater with great in Greater depth [49:47] and I suppose it wouldn't hurt to add that to the policy and it is always [49:53] Administration that is providing that information it's never the police department that's just going [49:59] in to review that information so as the policy stands right now it's it speaks [50:04] accurately to what happens um how how the policy is [50:09] administered and if you um we could look at it to see if that would bring greater [50:15] Clarity to the public if we need [50:20] that would there ever be a situation where because of the something that legally has happened [50:27] that it's required for the SRO or police to be given access to this you that's [50:33] not really a choice it's something that we by law would have to provide you know we I I'd have to look [50:41] that up um Michael to see if we'd have it be required by law but anytime [50:46] there's something criminal that has happened we do engage our sros if [50:51] there's a criminal act and we need to get video um related to that we definitely um engage them and actually [50:59] pull that pull that video and share that with um end Police [51:05] Department I would just maybe ask the policy committee noodle on this and if they feel that it's necessary to add [51:13] greater Clarity that would be great if not that's fine as well it was just [51:19] something I was wondering um if the board feels that we need to provide that [51:24] depth of clarity I I don't necessarily have a strong opinion either way but I just felt that [51:31] I necessary to bring it up thank you for that and board members [51:37] uh we will do that we'll bring it back to policy and see if there's any thoughts about if we if that would add [51:42] Clarity to the reader since as Dr Stanley said it as it states now it's [51:47] actually accurate but if that's for the reader for the user if it would be clear we can talk about that other board [51:54] members um do you want to weigh in on that do you have any strong feelings or thoughts about that before we take it [51:59] back to policy not a strong feeling but um I'm just wondering like we have so many [52:04] cameras now like if there's any you know General let's say a traffic incident [52:10] that are picked up on our cameras and those kind of things where we'd have to be required to do that and You' Maybe by [52:15] kind of just um by chance pick up student you know video with that as well [52:21] that might be a scenario where we have to kind of delineate a little bit so it's not necessarily a criminal act activity by one of our [52:31] students facilities that we might have to share video with that might be something to uh watch out or read accordingly [52:45] for any other board members have some feedback or thoughts on that before we take it [52:52] back okay thank you director arum for that that um additional thought on that you guys have done a [53:23] ton of work the last few months so thanks so much um we're going to go back in time to our [53:30] marketing update and see if uh director Edwards is available can everyone hear [53:37] me we can sorry that I flip-flopped you with policy and we had not at all iate [53:45] the flexibility I I appreciate everyone who reached out to me to [53:50] help good evening cheer allenburg board members Dr Stanley and community members [53:56] I'm G to give an update on what we've accomplished this year or is is underway [54:01] this year and what marketing plans we have for next year next slide [54:07] please so just a recap of 2324 we're going to talk about a new [54:12] initiative that was undertaken to increase Early Childhood screening appointments we're going to talk about [54:20] results from the kindergarten efforts that we piloted this fall we're also [54:25] going to talk about about some Focus we've placed on social media and results there and then a study that we did of [54:34] the competitive shopping experience next slide please so as you've heard before we want [54:43] to start conversations with Ein Diner resident families as early as possible [54:50] and we took a look at our early childhood screening appointments and found that um appointments were booking [54:58] up really quickly and a couple months out which was a really just a clue that [55:05] you know what we should really look at increasing our capacity in order to better serve our families as well as [55:13] again increase these opportunities to begin a conversation with our families [55:19] so we had the capacity for about 90 90 screening appointments and in um the 22 23 school [55:28] year we conducted about 600 appointments we netted almost $32,000 in in revenue [55:35] for those appointments and you can look at the mix of appointments so the [55:40] majority of the kids we were screening were four years old as you can see we make the most [55:48] money when we can screen someone at three years old so we w we are [55:54] undertaking an effort to screen younger and provide more screening [56:02] appointments next slide please so this is a postcard I think [56:08] Kristen bwan and Community Education for creating this postcard and really overseeing this program so we are [56:15] piloting a postcard program and postcards go out to families on um [56:23] basically you are going to get a postcard to get your child screened [56:29] every six months until you get screened starting when your child is two and a [56:35] half and uh the Early Learning Center increased capacity by securing more [56:41] hours with a nurse who's part of the screening appointments as well as [56:47] leveraging existing staff the screening is a combination of time with a nurse as [56:53] well as time with teaching staff so we we are excited about the opportunity to [56:58] screen more students younger and see lots of benefits be it again beginning [57:03] the relationship younger identifying student needs earlier and helping to [57:09] address those needs and um ideally increasing our Revenue by almost [57:16] $15,000 next slide please I wanted to bring everyone up to [57:22] date on what we've seen thus far with kindergarten so the primary focus was [57:28] this fall was to move our kindergarten calendar we were beginning our events in [57:35] late November early December and notied that all of our competitors held fall [57:42] events so we didn't want to be who a family saw at the very end of their [57:48] shopping Journey at the very end of their exploration we wanted to be right in the middle of that shopping season so [57:56] with the support of principles we moved our enrollment events up by four weeks [58:03] and I'm glad to say that that did not impact attendance we still had great [58:09] attendance at our events we also tried some paid social this year and we're [58:15] finding more and more places to basically take our kindergarten materials so this year I went to Jerry's [58:22] I went to the library I went to a new preschool to ask them hey would you [58:27] please share our kindergarten booklets with your students um that's in addition to some [58:34] things we tried last year which was beginning to email all eligible [58:40] kindergarten families in Edina as we kick off our kindergarten enrollment and [58:46] hit some of those key Milestone Milestone dates we started handing out materials [58:53] at two of the largest local preschool schools um Berry Patch and Idina ABC and [59:00] we just started providing more materials for our sites and then of course for [59:07] some time we've mailed kindergarten booklets to all age eligible [59:12] kindergarteners within the city we would use social media but just really to promote some of the key dates for [59:20] information nights or due dates around Choice program applications that type of [59:26] thing um we will always promote and have always promoted kindergarten through our newsletters um an Outreach following our [59:34] enrollment week to anyone who was not enrolled at the time so so far we're at [59:41] about an 80% share rate of residents um 13 more [59:48] students and we'll hit our goal and we are [59:54] um really feeling some pressure you know that Blake has opened a stunning Early [1:00:02] Learning Center that has grades prek through one we know that OLG opened a [1:00:09] new prek center and told families you know if you really want to get in our [1:00:14] kindergarten you probably need to bre in our preschool so we just know that [1:00:20] there's some new pressure when it comes to our youngest learners um I had a [1:00:26] conversation with Kathy the owner of ABC Express and she told me when OGG opened [1:00:32] their preschool they immediately lost a section of preschool so families really were responding to that kind of warning [1:00:39] if you will um that if you want to spot at OGG the idea is to come to our [1:00:45] preschool so we will continue our efforts and really kind of looking at [1:00:51] how we can even be stronger in terms of how we present our kindergarten program [1:00:57] and we'll talk a little bit about that later in the presentation can we go to the next slide [1:01:04] please so another idea that we're trying is this middle school night at Valley [1:01:13] View and South View and this is an event where we would invite all age alible [1:01:18] fourth and fifth graders because we know that parents are shopping at least two [1:01:25] years ahead of when they're going to make a change and we know that that transition from elementary to middle [1:01:32] school is a place where we see some vulnerabilities with our enrollment where we see a drop in Resident [1:01:39] enrollment and we tried so hard to pull this event off this year and lesson [1:01:47] learned it's really difficult to add an event to a calendar that already exists [1:01:54] it's hard to an event at an event in school year um particularly at two sites [1:01:59] and events that we wanted to have with in just a few days of each other so this event will be launched in the fall and [1:02:06] it too will occur um Mid November closer [1:02:13] to when other enrollment events are happening with our families events our [1:02:20] other families might be attending and the point here is to really showcase and [1:02:27] celebrate our Middle School experience what does it mean to be a middle school [1:02:32] student in EA we are always going to talk about academics because it's who we [1:02:38] are it's our reason for existing and we know it's hugely important to our Educators as well as to our parents one [1:02:46] of the things that we're going to do that's going to be different than anything I've really seen before is [1:02:52] we're going to have a track for parents and we're going to have a track for for students because we know from our [1:02:58] student research that kids really want to know what their middle school experience is going to be like so we're [1:03:05] going to tell them about this academics we're going to tell them about schedules and school days but we're also going to [1:03:11] give them some fun so they're gonna have an opportunity to have like a mini rally [1:03:17] experience because that's some of the fun that takes place at middle school [1:03:22] and if there's one thing that we heard from fifth graders last year when we did research is they want to know what's fun [1:03:30] they're well acquainted with what they're nervous about they want to know are they still gonna have a good time [1:03:37] are they still G to have activities and field trips and opportunities to [1:03:42] socialize and know that middle school is going to be more than just work work work so very excited to uh pilot this [1:03:52] event this fall and as you can see by the postcards we created it's meant to appeal [1:03:59] to those kids from that an age group from that Elementary to Middle School [1:04:05] transition some of the language is meant to be more C casual and it's an event that you attend with your [1:04:10] parents can we go to the next slide please there's more of a focus that I [1:04:18] hope you see or will continue to see on middle school so when it comes to our [1:04:23] social media coverage we are are more mindful to have more and more stories [1:04:29] that showcase our Middle School experience we know that middle school is [1:04:35] really it's going to be very important that we retain residents so we want to [1:04:41] make sure that we are celebrating with those people who are connected with us [1:04:46] on social primarily our resident families that we've got a wonderful [1:04:52] offering in middle school and make sure to keep that front and center for families we also want to as part of our [1:05:01] strategy create our own word of mouth and social media becomes a great way to [1:05:07] do that we want to give families the stories to tell when they're on the [1:05:14] sidelines at the soccer fields just talking to families who are considering a different program or who attend a [1:05:21] different program we want to make it easy for them to be able to recall the great things that are happening [1:05:28] because we also know parents are making decisions based on feedback they're [1:05:33] receiving from other parents and then lastly we're working on a middle school [1:05:38] um ad we've already done some of the filming I call it an ad because it really is an advertisement again of our [1:05:46] Middle School offering and what the Middle School experience would be and there'll be a parent video and then site [1:05:53] specific videos that are more targeted to students next slide [1:06:01] please so just some um stats from our social coverage again making it a focus [1:06:09] trying to make the things that we show a lot more engaging so I hope you've seen [1:06:14] an increase in reals an increase in photography versus just graphics and I [1:06:21] think that we're starting to see it in the numbers that we're finding that um a lot more people are engaging with us [1:06:29] through our social channels next slide [1:06:35] please a significant undertaking um has been our competitive [1:06:40] shopping effort so I recruited um a team of five people and I want to give a [1:06:46] special thank you to Leah bird Julie gabrielson and jacn swords who were all [1:06:52] part of that team I of course was on that team and then I had um someone from outside [1:06:59] of the district who's done a lot of work with families as they shopping as part [1:07:04] of that team as well and just to understand what are the experiences our [1:07:10] families are having when they are considering joining edana public schools [1:07:17] and even potentially leaving our district overwhelmingly so as you can [1:07:22] see from the numbers we really have four competitors we have residents that might [1:07:28] attend dozens of different Public Schools Charter Schools [1:07:33] or private schools but it is notable that about a ratio of four to [1:07:39] one our families are going to be in a private school more so than they would attend another public or charter school [1:07:47] and that overwhelmingly these are the four programs that parents are choosing so [1:07:53] these are where we placed our Focus so for each of these programs we've attended their for OGG we and for the [1:08:02] for Blake we attended their preschool programs or Early [1:08:07] Learning Center at Blake we attended olg's kindergarten programs and we [1:08:14] attended secondary programs at Bild and at bre what's notable is that Bild is [1:08:23] opening up a sixth grade grade in Fall of 2025 [1:08:29] so we're going to have even more pressure placed again on that really key [1:08:35] transition from elementary to middle school we attended their virtual and [1:08:42] in-person shopping events we've signed up for their emails we're on their mailing lists um and we were there to [1:08:51] again get a sense for the experience we also wanted to get a sense for what they [1:08:57] offer in terms of Outreach and opportunities for [1:09:03] engagement we wanted to know what their key messages were how is it that they [1:09:08] describe their programs and that will help us really fine-tune our own [1:09:15] messaging about how we differentiate Edina from these other programs we wanted to know if they had any key [1:09:21] messaging around public school and then we wanted to also be mindful of that [1:09:27] anything that was particularly noteworthy can we go to the next slide [1:09:34] please and it's very interesting because there are certain programs that are [1:09:42] phenomenal communication machines and they are sending families [1:09:49] communication from I would say from Blake I've received communication every [1:09:54] two weeks since August from Breck I reive regular communication from OGG and benil I've [1:10:02] received nothing and I was really happy about that that creates a huge opportunity for us so we saw some best [1:10:10] practices in terms of how different programs communicate with prospective [1:10:16] families things that would be very easy for us to adopt things that would be [1:10:23] very easy for us to emulate so we are excited about the [1:10:28] opportunities um because they all I believe are manageable I don't think [1:10:33] that um most of what they do is electronic and they're just making use [1:10:40] of the time that people spend coming through their buildings the picture that you see in the upper right hand corner [1:10:47] is from Blake's Early Learning Center and then the picture of the women you [1:10:53] see in the lower leftand corner are basically parent ambassadors so they [1:10:59] make available right on their website the fact that you can contact a parent and learn from their experience so it [1:11:06] was really eye openening and Fa a fascinating experience but also helped [1:11:11] again to really crystallize we understand the strength [1:11:17] of our Ein programs and just now know how to again differentiate ourselves in [1:11:24] our communication even more so as a result of um this [1:11:32] study can we go to the next slide please so for the upcoming school year [1:11:41] the key campaigns and initiatives that we're working on is to assess our own [1:11:46] shopping experience so the results need to be reviewed with our principles there [1:11:54] are events I've attended as well in our own District um and in light of [1:12:00] everything that we learned from what our parents are experienced when they're shopping taking a fresh look at our own [1:12:08] experiences and that's not to say that our experiences need to be completely [1:12:15] revamped I think there's some outstanding things that are already happening but we want to take this as an [1:12:22] opportunity to just take a look and make sure that we are presenting [1:12:29] ourselves um as well as we possibly can we're also as you know going to try some [1:12:35] new um secondary events we're going to increase our Outreach our buildings need [1:12:43] marketing materials so that's something that we're going to be working on over the summer is to make sure that everyone [1:12:48] has really beautiful marketing M materials and looking at ways that we [1:12:54] can maximize navigation on our website so that it's very easy for families who are [1:13:01] looking to enroll to be able to do so who are looking for information on [1:13:07] setting them up tours to be able to do so and niche.com is a nice platform for [1:13:13] us we get a few hundred looks at our niche.com page every month so we want to [1:13:21] make sure I'm working with Niche just to make sure that our page is as strong as it can [1:13:27] be there are there's a subset of the P PLC that has told me Daphne we've seen [1:13:36] your presentations and we want to be involved we want to be involved in helping families um choose Edina so we [1:13:46] are participating in or we're working together essentially in an extended irod [1:13:52] where we have gathered information from friends who send their kids out of [1:13:58] District or friends who had been in Adina at some point to make sure that we [1:14:04] understand exactly why people have made choices to either not come to a or to [1:14:10] leave and we'll be working on a program for how they can support the effort [1:14:16] again we know from research families word of mouth is hugely important and we [1:14:22] want to be able to empower this group group to have fantastic access to all the best word of [1:14:30] mouth so that they can have conversations with their their friends and families we are working on an early [1:14:39] learning study you know really after conversations several conversations with [1:14:44] anarie just making a decision that we need to get some research we really need [1:14:51] to know beyond kind of our anecdotal takeaways [1:14:56] why are we not seeing more families participating in our ECFE program and [1:15:03] again understanding what's most important to families at that preschool level because we really want to [1:15:09] transition those families of course into our kindergarten so that's at the really [1:15:15] early stage but we're doing we're we're taking strides to really fill the [1:15:22] funnel while kids are young and ideally of course have retention [1:15:30] programs in place at those points of transition where we're able to keep them [1:15:36] so we are really just in the design stages working with a vendor on an early learning study when it comes to the uh [1:15:45] Middle School sneak peek that's that middle school night we've got great plans we actually just need to execute [1:15:52] the program which we're going to do in November and we're again working on a marketing [1:15:58] video or an advertisement that will help not only with promoting that night but [1:16:04] the Middle School experience in general content that can live on our website content that can go will be short enough [1:16:10] to go on social content that be can be used when families are on prospective [1:16:16] student tours and then lastly we need to look at that [1:16:22] transition point from middle school to high school and now that Paul is in [1:16:27] place and is our permanent High School principal we are just better positioned [1:16:32] to have some ongoing conversations about what can happen [1:16:38] there and the next slide so thank you very much for your [1:16:44] time that's where we've been director [1:17:00] man um this might be more kind of concept conceptual but director Edwards I just want to say thank you um for your [1:17:07] work and your team's work um when you're looking at marketing coms recruiting [1:17:12] efforts kind of across some of those other schools um you know taking away maybe the time resource or the money [1:17:19] resource is there are there any things are there any items that those schools are doing that you wish you could do [1:17:24] here are there any of those marketing recruiting Communications items if um those constraints w't an issue that you [1:17:31] would want to bring here if that Mak sense oh it does make sense um some things that are notable [1:17:39] about their events um they have a lot of Staff present and [1:17:48] they have a lot of parents present and they have a lot of students present so if we were able to hold our event events [1:17:55] in a time that worked well for our staff that would be [1:18:00] fantastic um they have absolutely beautiful marketing materials you know [1:18:07] we're certainly going to create marketing materials um they have marketing materials that I would expect [1:18:14] to see from a corporation they're really really um [1:18:20] outstanding they also um [1:18:25] they're like particularly I would say what we experienced at [1:18:30] Breck wonderful giveaways I wish I wasn't at home because if I was in my [1:18:37] office I could show you my Breck Cape so my husband and I went to a Saturday [1:18:43] event at Breck and I noticed just all these [1:18:49] little people in cakes and I was like oh that must be the in thing now Young kids [1:18:55] must be into capes and all I had to do is stick around a little longer and I noticed the big Breck logo on the back [1:19:02] of their Cape so every kindergartener everyone who's part of their Elementary programs who came for the tour that day [1:19:09] got to have a cape so that's one of the many gifts that I received um I've [1:19:17] received notebooks I've received Donuts I've received um gosh what else have I I [1:19:24] have a l literally I have a drawer where I'm collecting materials and giveaways [1:19:29] and they're just little things I mean I got hot breakfast at at Breck there was [1:19:36] hot food served at Blake just things to make the event super [1:19:41] comfortable and really accessible you know I went to a couple of events on a [1:19:48] Saturday um both um Blake and Breck had weekend events um I don't know if that's [1:19:55] appropriate for us but those are some of the things that I saw you know even with [1:20:00] the the giveaways it seems simple but things that really made a lasting [1:20:06] impression not only for me as an adult but fun fun ways to um engage kids as [1:20:17] well that reminds me there was a um this is a story there was a football coach in [1:20:22] still when he first got to the school football team was horrible he put a [1:20:27] little football in at every they had a a hospital in town and he put a football with every baby that came through so and [1:20:35] it was a while ago but it was that kind of chachki for whatever reason that how many people would come back and go I still have that little football you [1:20:40] think why do you have that but it's so it's interesting as it gets bigger obviously there's more of a bio in that [1:20:46] but again thank you so much for your work this is uh really a great report thank [1:20:52] you thank you other board members [1:20:57] uh director Arrow hi Dy thanks for pulling us together just a question for you um do a [1:21:04] lot of do a lot of uh the preschools do like Google like SEO stuff where um [1:21:11] they're getting hits from that like would we ever entertain that if that's something that um was used a lot you [1:21:19] know I would have to find out what some of the other preschools are doing in [1:21:25] terms of that I don't know I don't know the answer to that Dan off hand yeah you [1:21:32] know one other thing you will notice when you get your um issue of the [1:21:37] experien newsletter and that is the paper like mini newspaper that's mailed [1:21:42] to um all homes in Edina you are going to see a page of basically e [1:21:51] successes and something that you'll start to see more in our messaging is where we really assert and celebrate who [1:22:00] we are you know if there's anything I heard when I first started it was kind [1:22:05] of like Daphne there are these Rumblings of different narratives in the [1:22:10] community and they're not all fair and I don't say that because um that's what [1:22:17] people told me that oh DEA people say these things about us but it's not fair [1:22:22] it's what I've concluded after being here for almost two years and so we've [1:22:28] got a phenomenal outstanding list of really just asserting we are the Adina [1:22:36] that you've always known and respected we are the Adina that led you to make an [1:22:43] investment in living in this community and really being forthright more forthright about our [1:22:51] successes and that also again is meant to give people whoever choose to read us [1:22:59] more of that great word of mouth about what's happening you know when someone [1:23:04] says something oh a Dina used to be or what have you that people will be armed [1:23:12] with information that shows that you know this generation of students is doing [1:23:17] things that are just as outstanding um as anyone so just keep an [1:23:22] eye out for that when you get your copy of your experience you're going to notice some really nice writeups around [1:23:29] some of the incredible things that have happened this year director [1:23:37] Gable direct Edwards I want to Echo what others have said about um the great work [1:23:43] you're doing I mean those social media numbers where it was like plus [1:23:49] 297 that's um pretty impressive and I agree with you [1:23:55] I've always said like we are a great option for a lot of students and you've done a phenomenal job of coming in and [1:24:01] telling our story and telling our story from multiple aspects you know you don't [1:24:07] have to all we don't all have to be athletes we don't all have to be in the band but there's success stories across [1:24:13] this district and you have helped us tell that story so I just really want to thank you and your small But Mighty team [1:24:21] um for doing that and I wanted to raise an idea while we were talking about this [1:24:27] um I was fortunate enough to be at the core planning day and I had some fifth grade teachers at my table and they said [1:24:33] as because you were able to present to that group and they said we would love to be a part of that give us the [1:24:39] information because we sit with families right as they're getting ready for middle school and that's often the time [1:24:46] when families are asking us what do you think about middle school and so um I I thought I'd pass that on as just an idea [1:24:53] and I love your idea of having student voice in that middle school because I [1:24:59] think as a parent of a fifth grader um they do they want to see what's my day G [1:25:05] to look like and almost like a day in the life of a middle schooler um and [1:25:11] again wearing the Hat of maybe someone who's really into theater and someone who's really into a you know all the [1:25:18] different aspects um that's I think what resonates with kids is knowing oh that [1:25:23] that k me yeah you know so and no one else is doing that you know we did not design [1:25:31] that program based on our competitive research we knew based on our research [1:25:37] with fifth graders that it was the right thing to do but now having gone through that competitive [1:25:44] exercise there there isn't anyone else who is creating that type of experience [1:25:50] for kids everyone else is doing the same tour as they're um as their parents so [1:25:57] we're excited to be able to offer that and we know that one of our key selling [1:26:02] points at the middle school level is what we do to build belonging inclusion [1:26:10] and agency among our students and really that just becomes an opportunity for us [1:26:16] to do that exactly it's really how we think about what our brand messages are [1:26:21] at that level and we're not only going to tell you but we're going to give you the experience to it so we're excited [1:26:28] about that and thank you for that idea that's fantastic I'm glad to hear the [1:26:34] fifth grade teachers say that and they won't have to ask for that [1:26:39] again and where else can you go to Middle Schools where they're doing kayak races in their swimming pools I don't [1:26:45] know I don't know and we saw IT director [1:26:52] bman um I have many questions but I'll keep them brief um one is to keep us [1:26:57] grounded in budget so the Marketing Group that you lead and all these [1:27:02] efforts which are phenomenal that where we're working towards doing this for every student that we enroll that we [1:27:08] through our efforts we get them to enroll whether in screening Early Learning Center [1:27:15] kindergarten Middle School keep them in high school or the effect of if we lose [1:27:20] them at some point along the way can we remind ourselves of what that either [1:27:25] revenue is to us or the loss of Revenue to us whether you can answer that or Mt it'd be really great if we can ground [1:27:30] ourselves to make sure we're very clear about what that actually means budgetarily to us yeah I look at [1:27:37] $10,000 per student okay so for every dollar we're spending on marketing that either allows [1:27:43] us to retain an Nina student or attct a student to Edina has a $10,000 net [1:27:51] effect uh in terms of if they leave then we lose $10,000 if we keep them we [1:27:57] either retain or we get $10,000 more so I just want to make sure we're clear about that number two we're a public [1:28:03] school um and we don't have tons of money that um are [1:28:09] EAS oh you hit I think you hit mute just hit mute Michael I'm sorry um I was [1:28:16] saying that we don't have a budget that compares to the four competitors that [1:28:22] you were just mentioning is that fair to say you know based on a couple of them yes [1:28:29] for sure um and how they how they show [1:28:35] up okay so I just want to make sure we're we're making sure we're clear on the two concepts one marketing effort [1:28:42] that helps us retain or attract new students to us at any of the levels that we just talked about is really important to us from an enrollment and budgetary [1:28:49] standpoint and two marketing is one of the key elements that we're trying to do with all the you just enumerated to us [1:28:56] yeah I'd like us to be thinking not just in your group but I think as a collective how do we try to figure out [1:29:03] how to balance make sure you have the right resources necessary to continue to be successful and competitive in all the [1:29:09] wonderful things that we're doing that we can get that message out because it dramatically impacts our ultimate budget [1:29:15] so when M was talking earlier tonight about the number of 8630 students I [1:29:20] believe is what we were using for 25 is that right M just yeah he's nodding um that this is all going back to what your [1:29:27] efforts are about how do we get 8630 right and get the money related to [1:29:32] that or do we get more or more prob we don't get less um so I think that's really important for everyone to [1:29:38] understand second is one thing I've noticed in any system is are [1:29:44] we Proactive or passive to the marketing effort when we're talking about who [1:29:51] we're targeting and it's really hard sometimes to be proactive with resources or time or or whatever it might be and [1:29:58] we can sometimes be too passive I think you mentioned Blake and I had this experience myself that they kind of drip [1:30:04] on you to kind of keep you engaged whatever they're shown that they're interested and so on so forth however to [1:30:09] be fair they also don't always completely close the loop at the end to where are they really targeting you or [1:30:15] not targeting you sometimes you can fall out of not knowing whether you are or not to me it's the a toz process of how [1:30:23] do we get from that standpoint point so to me I would love for us to continue on the efforts and the resources that might [1:30:28] be needed for this for us to remain proactive and engaged through the entire [1:30:34] process for all the categories you talked about so you talked about in the screening you're already doing a really good job of that that's awesome keep [1:30:41] that up our hit rate hopefully will continue to improve with that as we look at getting into kindergarten keeping [1:30:46] them for middle school and keeping them for high school how do we do that how do we keep dripping on those processes so I [1:30:52] hear a lot of that in your presentation and I'm from where we were to where we are now is phenomenal so that's awesome [1:30:59] I'm concerned about how we keep going and keep giving you or enabling you with the resources so you can continue to be [1:31:06] successful in the areas that we need because this is only going to get harder as you enumerated multiple times yeah [1:31:12] but the offerings that are available to our community are going to continue to grow and we have to continue to be more [1:31:20] competitive with those offerings yeah and you know it's so interesting um I'm so glad you brought [1:31:27] that up because if I were to think about that as well as come back to your initial question [1:31:32] Elliot there are certain things that I saw and have experienced right in my shopping experience that were just fun [1:31:40] and and someone spent thousands of dollars to make happen um some of the things that happen [1:31:47] on an ongoing basis aren't that expensive a drip email campaign but you [1:31:54] need someone to be able to do it you know I didn't see anything that I [1:31:59] thought was so um outrageous or unusual but it's clear that they've got the [1:32:06] people to be able to execute that's the most significant thing that I would say [1:32:12] and so like for instance as you mentioned um there's that whole Blake drip [1:32:20] campaign that I'm on I'm on the Breck drip campaign the the dates to and and [1:32:26] um apply have come and gone no one from Blake for instance has called me to say [1:32:31] hey we noticed you haven't applied yet and I those are the ideas that I think [1:32:37] about about closing the loop on some things um when it comes to people who [1:32:44] were in our district and leave that I think would be a great [1:32:50] opportunity to reach out to people people and say we know that you're [1:32:56] trying something new how's that going for you um one of the things that we're [1:33:01] looking at is the fact that we'd like to a higher response rate on our lever [1:33:07] survey and we've been brainstorming some different ideas about um how to do [1:33:14] that how nice would it be if we had someone say in the Welcome Center this [1:33:19] is just an idea we've considered several different ideas but what if we had someone who could regularly make [1:33:26] Outreach calls and just be an unbiased person a friendly Voice who can [1:33:33] talk to families um those are the types of things that would I think make the most [1:33:42] difference how can we touch people really we're the one one thing that we [1:33:49] have of course that no one else has is the ad community and as much as OGG is [1:33:56] based in Adina they're essentially a community school they pull from throughout the Twin Cities we are the [1:34:03] only system that is the community system and if we can do things in a way [1:34:10] that are more personal that is completely consistent with an idea of a sense of community but [1:34:18] those things take warm friendly people to be able to to [1:34:25] execute that would be what's most significant thank you [1:34:32] y sty I think this is obviously outstanding work I mean thank you just [1:34:39] outstanding I think that um I think just as important as [1:34:45] marketing and telling her story is is making sure that we can back it up in what we're actually doing for our [1:34:51] students and I think that's where our strategic plan comes in and all obviously the operational your work [1:34:58] you're doing Dr Stanley um and so it's the it's the mixture of those two things [1:35:03] if you if we can't actually do what we're selling um but so that's making [1:35:10] sure experience matches what you're what you're selling people which is so [1:35:15] important um so I would love to um maybe [1:35:21] in the next maybe in winter time or something to follow up all the outstanding work you're doing with [1:35:28] another conversation about what we are seeing from [1:35:33] um the people that are leaving or the people that are choosing other options to see sort of that continual feedback [1:35:42] loop what are you doing from a marketing perspective what are we seeing and are [1:35:48] are there any things that we need to be doing from a leadership perspective to make sure that um um we're not missing [1:35:54] the mark anywhere so um I would be interested in um making sure that we're [1:36:00] continually revisiting that data there so when we are have a [1:38:07] school district that has more than 10 American Indian students we need to [1:38:13] establish an American Indian parent um I'm looking parent advisory committee [1:38:19] and that parent advisory committee there is the American Indian education dollars [1:38:25] we work in collaboration together to provide support to American Indian [1:38:31] students about their uh their culture and to make sure that uh they are having [1:38:39] all of the educational opportunities that all students can have in a district and that their achievement is equal to [1:38:47] or better than that of peers so oh Megan joined hello Megan glad that you made it [1:38:55] uh Megan is our parent from the American Indian parent advisory committee um so I [1:39:00] have some date on March 26 the American Indian um parent advisory committee [1:39:07] presented a vote of non-c concurrence to the school board and they had 15 [1:39:14] recommendations per the state of Minnesota and statute for America APAC [1:39:20] American Indian parent advisory committees the school board had 60 days to present a written response to the [1:39:30] americ to the APAC and on April [1:39:35] 23d I provided an update to the school board on the support because the [1:39:42] American APAC what is shifting into the department of areas that I support and I [1:39:49] provided information to the board about how I foresaw going forward and [1:39:56] supporting APAC based on the 15 recommendations which then brings us to [1:40:02] today May 13th where the school board is responding to the APAC with the uh [1:40:11] Written Letter to the APAC with a response to the 15 recommendations and [1:40:17] Megan if you want to turn your camera on so we can say hi and introduce yourself [1:40:23] real quick I see a name she is [1:40:32] here I'm sorry I thought I was on oh okay I wasn't okay am I good now yes [1:40:40] okay hi my name is Megan Mills and um I am a member of the kuga nation [1:40:49] and and therefore a member of Apex [1:40:57] thank you so now we pass it back to the board uh for your response to the [1:41:08] APAC um so um director gabler I wanted [1:41:13] to first of all thank you for putting the letter together um for APAC and then [1:41:20] I was wondering if you would be willing to walk through of the highlights of the [1:41:25] letter um for both the community and for Miss Mills sure Hi Megan it's good to see [1:41:34] you um yes we will look at the uh letter [1:41:40] and I think some of the the highlights um from the letter really we took [1:41:45] Direction based on the 15 recommendations that came from APAC and [1:41:51] um as the start of the letter uh speaks to it's the board really values the [1:41:57] partnership that we get to have with APAC and um we really appreciate the [1:42:02] opportunity to respond to the requests and to work in partnership with you um moving forward and so [1:42:10] um the letter lays out each of the 15 recommendations and the district's response or the board's response um I [1:42:18] think a high level overview would be that I think um [1:42:24] based on recommendations of hiring a cultural liaison for um an American [1:42:31] Indian cultural liaison uh hopefully a lot of the issues that were brought forward will be able to be addressed and [1:42:40] so um you know you can see in recommendation number one that the cultural liaison responsibilities what [1:42:47] those will include um that that person will report directly to uh Dr beare and [1:42:55] um that it will hit all of those um making curriculum relevant provide [1:43:01] positive reinforcement um and that the how that [1:43:07] rule will be funded and then um moving forward uh some of the other [1:43:13] recommendations fall underneath that cultural liaison in terms of um making [1:43:18] sure that um the [1:43:24] that the a cultural Lis on is a is a conduit between the APAC and the [1:43:29] districts and making sure that you know you have access to the budget on time and um working to create curriculum [1:43:37] development and so on and so forth so I guess I would open it up to you Miss [1:43:43] Mills to see if you know there's questions or there's some areas of clarity that we can provide to you or um [1:43:51] anything that we can you know answer this evening I actually don't have the letter [1:43:57] the the response do I it would be in our board [1:44:04] packet yeah it was posted in the board [1:44:19] packet um I guess the the one note I was given by another member was that that we [1:44:26] would have some um some kind of say in who is [1:44:35] hired that I think that was the only thing that I was really given a note [1:44:41] about Dr Stanley or Dr mcair or I know we have Dr sailor on here or director [1:44:47] sailor on here as well do you want to speak to that yeah so we we have put the posted [1:44:57] for hiring and as I continue to send uh [1:45:02] Megan can say I send a lot of communication about the whole process [1:45:08] and I plan to continue to send communication to families and keep families engaged I have been in contact [1:45:16] with some members just because I I am dependent we are dependent on our APAC [1:45:21] to help advertise the position so that we can get the right person into the job [1:45:28] I've gotten some amazing feedback from parents about questions that we may want to ask and list serves that we may want [1:45:35] to use so when the time comes that we do have candidates that we can interview I [1:45:41] will be reaching out to the APAC to see that if we can have parents that are [1:45:47] available to join on the phone call [1:45:53] the phone call sorry the interview because we're in a phone call right now on the interview that would hopefully be [1:45:58] face to face okay does that does that help Megan [1:46:03] yeah definitely that's that was really I think that was our only and then a part [1:46:09] from the transparency in the budget was the other primary issue yeah the letter [1:46:16] addresses that piece I'm sorry Karen if I interrupted you the letter addresses that piece that the budget will be [1:46:21] provided to you at all readings um in accordance to mte guidelines and state [1:46:27] statutes and I think right now we're um just a lot of communication so we've [1:46:33] finished with the high school honoring ceremony so [1:46:39] we're closing out the budget and I will be sending out the links with here with [1:46:45] the budget information as I will continue to send out links with the update from this meeting for everybody [1:46:52] who was not able to attend this meeting attached with the letter from the school board and that will be signed by all [1:46:59] members of the school board as per the uh mde states that we have to do that [1:47:07] and continued communication about where we are during the hiring process because [1:47:12] that was one of our requests was that we keep um not only just transparency in [1:47:19] the budget but just very uh open mind of communication so attempting to keep going forward with [1:47:28] that great and I think um I just want to take [1:47:34] this opportunity I'm GNA just in case for those people that are watching I'd like to just um read the last paragraph [1:47:41] of this letter because I think it really speaks to the Our intention moving [1:47:46] forward um is that the school board values its relationship with our American Indian parent advisory [1:47:51] committee and thanks the members for their collaborative input and their work on behalf of the district's American [1:47:58] Indian students and all Edina Public School students the district looks forward forward to partnering with APAC [1:48:05] to implement the initiatives that are described in this letter and so please know that um our intentions are that we [1:48:12] will have a great working relationship going forward and we look forward to the ability to partner with [1:48:19] you intermediate 287 a Cooperative School District that supplements a [1:50:10] number of our programs um that are offered in the district however this um intermediate 287 may offer those [1:50:15] programs in different formats or in different locations to better serve the students that are participating U most [1:50:21] of those services are in fact special education services um while Cooperative districts do not have uh property tax [1:50:27] bases State Statute does allow them to um kind of piggyback on the member district property tax basis in order to [1:50:34] generate long-term facilities maintenance Revenue in order to access those funds member districts must agree [1:50:40] to do so by board resolution um the initial resolution was in fact made by District 287 on April 11th of which [1:50:47] director bman is a member um so that resolution passed at 287 and now it's up to each member district to approve their [1:50:53] own resolutions for their proportionate share our proportionate share for fiscal year 26 is calculated at [1:51:02] 8268 with that the recommended action is before [1:51:07] you board members are there questions or comments about this and Lear learning [1:52:04] Bethany van osul and director of teaching and learning Jody DN Hubert to [1:52:09] talk about this item with us okay good evening Dr Stanley Chair allenburg and board directors um Bethany [1:52:17] van ell could not be with us this evening so I'm going to be presenting um a highlight of information and and uh [1:52:23] answering any questions so just to take us back a little bit in February our assistant director of teaching and [1:52:30] learning Bethany van OZO um gave an update on the prek through 12 [1:52:35] comprehensive literacy plan to the board on page 12 of this update it stated that [1:52:41] our six through eight literacy lead team was piloting an evidence-based [1:52:47] curriculum for ELA the team will use that and at the time the team will was [1:52:52] using that experience to determine if a recommendation would be made to implement the [1:52:57] program um if the recommendation this is how it's list stated back in February is [1:53:03] made and approved the E Department in both middle schools will implement the program starting in [1:53:08] 2425 so the process was intentionally aligning Middle School programming to the science of reading to our prek [1:53:15] through five implementations and 9 through 12 course development the vertical alignment being really [1:53:20] important to the whole entire comprehensive literacy plan so that was the update um as I noted in this winter [1:53:28] and due to the depth of the work and tight timelines that we face and how quickly time goes by we are now bringing [1:53:35] to you for Action the actual recommendation for study sync for our 6 [1:53:40] through eight Ela program um the current report in front of you goes into more [1:53:46] depth about the review process that uh the team did take led by the great facilitation of assistant director [1:53:52] director Bethany van oo um it talks about that the team 100% of the review [1:53:57] team actually rated the overall experience with study sync when they were piloting as favorable the Middle [1:54:04] School review team um really did a thorough job of vetting this these materials in this content and aligning [1:54:09] them to best practices and research so the team is really excited that this both it's a um what you see in the quote [1:54:17] is both a print and digital text and that the package will um be in front of [1:54:22] our uh middle school students with a high level of rigor in some new and [1:54:27] exciting text and then applicable responses to activities in both a digital way and a traditional paper and [1:54:34] pencil way teaching and learning is also excited that through a strong partnership with the study sync team as [1:54:41] well as our business office we are able to be creative with funding and split the cost of the materials across two [1:54:48] years and I want to make sure that I um articulate that this is going to be [1:54:53] wrapped into the current budget of teaching and learning so it's not an additional expense um we have been [1:54:59] planning for this Ela review knowing that within our budget we would be purchasing um these materials so um that [1:55:07] just does a little bit more of information than what's in the report and wanted to see if there are any [1:55:12] further questions or comments thank you for that background information teaching learning committee reviewed this last [1:55:19] week I believe and um had a few questions regarding sorry I think I'm going to [1:55:26] sneeze no okay it passed I apologize um we had a few questions that um Director [1:55:32] D Hubert went over about um how they would be aligning the curriculum across [1:55:39] um making sure that we're aligned grades um K through 12 and um the teaching and [1:55:45] learning committee was um all positive about this uh curriculum um so I just [1:55:52] wanted to pass that along um director Bergman I just wanted to say thank you Jody for your last comment that was my [1:55:59] question was about the budgetary component to that so thank you for working that through and making sure that's in our current budget from that [1:56:05] standpoint that's the implication for that so thank you absolutely dror Barry um I just wanted [1:56:12] to comment that as we were discussing this in teaching and learning um one of the things that really struck me was how [1:56:19] we talk about younger grades learning to read and older grades reading to learn and this program seemed like a very [1:56:26] strategic approach to how do you read to learn and it's applicable to not just the language arts classes but you could [1:56:33] take those strategies and apply them to a journal article how do I read a scientific magazine um that I have no [1:56:42] context for um so it's really I can see why um a lot of the all of the teachers [1:56:49] um were excited about this program because it really kind of of touches all of the subject matters yeah thank you [1:56:56] for adding that director [1:57:02] gaer I feel like I'm talking a lot um I have I Cheryl thank you for saying that [1:57:09] because I that was really um that's my I mean I teach English at a community [1:57:15] college and that is something that it's talked about a lot is students that are coming in that don't know how to read [1:57:21] for information or read especially non-fiction um type of work so that is great to hear that [1:57:28] and I just wanted to just assuming that there's some English language arts teachers that I thought may maybe some [1:57:35] of them would be here but in case they're watching um I have been so impressed with our Middle School [1:57:40] language arts experience and the curriculum that they've that they've had so I'm thrilled to hear that they really [1:57:48] liked what this new product has to offer as well um um and we also know I mean [1:57:55] anodally when you will talk to Edina graduates when they come back from college they'll say I am a strong writer [1:58:02] and I didn't realize what a strong writer I was until I went off to college and um you know was were mixed with [1:58:09] other kids from different schools so I really appreciate the work that our English language arts team have has done [1:58:16] previously but also as they move forward and I really um thought that the thoroughness of the process that the [1:58:23] design team went through to come to that recommendation and how you laid that out in the packet um was outstanding the [1:58:30] school visits the pilot the rubric the survey the whole thing um for anybody [1:58:35] that's watching this and is you know interested in how these decisions get made I think that your report is worth [1:58:42] looking at um I did have one question as [1:58:47] um as we hear from the state when it comes to the react [1:58:52] was this one of the curriculums that is on their approved list or is that only [1:58:59] K5 that that currently is K5 in phase two they' be looking more at secondary [1:59:04] or intervention um type materials so um this is not on the elementary list okay [1:59:13] but they're coming out with a secondary um what I see and what we're understanding is that they're coming out [1:59:18] definitely with like an intervention list and then that might feed some information on secondary um that's not [1:59:25] 100% concrete yet in what we're seeing so okay thank you for that [1:59:33] Clarity and um Jody can you talk a little bit about how they modified the [1:59:40] expectations for the curriculum use even at K5 yeah yeah I can um I I mean I [1:59:49] definitely um through the read Act in the curriculum use they have um as as [1:59:55] it's it's complicated right um but one piece that we originally heard right was that we needed to only choose from the [2:00:02] approved list that mde um would have the team of people reviewing and now as time [2:00:09] has gone on they have given us some really good feedback of everything that they reviewed so that they're [2:00:16] acknowledging that there's very few curriculums that have everything in them but their feedback allows us to see that [2:00:23] this is still the best fit for our system and these places that there might be gaps can be filled and so there's [2:00:31] nothing that is 100% we have to purchase through the read act and um there is [2:00:38] that if you purchase something that is on the approved list which there is only [2:00:43] one comprehensive curriculum at this point that is then there's money to reimburse your district for that and [2:00:51] there's a cap on that money for all of the Minnesota districts right so the reality of seeing all that money um is [2:00:59] really probably slim and and none of us can fully predict so um even with K5 [2:01:05] right now one there's still only one that's fully approved that's a comprehensive curriculum and there are [2:01:12] several that are being Revisited so that every company has a chance to say oh we can improve in this area on the rubric [2:01:19] so much like the rubric you see in this report right the team that's reviewing for mde has a rubric like that um which [2:01:26] is great information for us it helps in these type of review processes and we are absolutely considering that [2:01:32] important information and work and we're thrilled that the react is evolving to be a little bit more responsible to [2:01:39] actual practice within our school systems so great thank you for that um [2:01:47] one final thing I lied I said it that was my last question I did I hear you correctly that this is a digital and [2:01:55] basically hard copy so students are learning how to read when a text is on [2:02:01] their computer but they also have that opportunity to have hard copy yeah text [2:02:08] that we're reading from yeah I think that's great to reiterate that question because it was one that um I'm thankful [2:02:14] came up in teaching and learning when you just look at the top quote it I think you get the impression that it's digital but if you look a little further [2:02:20] into the details of it which is a lot of detail right it is a print and digital bundle so there is that careful balance [2:02:28] of how exactly like you said um director gabler to help our students know how to engage and comprehend a digital text but [2:02:35] also have text in front of them that is not digital and that also refers to them how they're responding to the text some [2:02:41] of the opportunities are within the digital programming and some are um with the traditional paper and pencil or [2:02:48] conversation with their peers you know different engagement opportunities come through through the resources that we [2:02:56] are hoping [2:03:22] Barry I Birdman i gabler i hovie i man [2:03:32] hi by a vote of seven to zero the six grade six to eight English language arts [2:03:37] curriculum adoption recommendation is approved thank you to your team director DC Hubert I will pass it on thank you [2:03:44] very much thank you do I have a motion to approve the school board election resolution even [2:03:50] years so moved so moved [2:03:56] second not going away from me this time um this we have been talking about [2:04:03] for about two years so um we uh talked about it last time it is [2:04:11] a resolution to move the school district elections from odd to even years in [2:04:16] order to save the district money given the financial constraints of the district [2:04:23] um so a little bit of additional information that I wanted to provide was [2:04:28] there were some questions about how much money would we actually be saving and so [2:04:35] um I communicated with um the Secretary of State School Board Association [2:04:40] District legal council and um superintendent Stanley spoke with the city of Edina and Minnesota state law [2:04:47] outlines how election expenses are split um during a um Regular year election and [2:04:56] under that law um there's agreement between both the city and ourselves that [2:05:02] the approximate cost of the district would be around $55,000 so there is quite a large [2:05:08] savings given that um we are currently being charged around $150,000 to run the [2:05:14] audio elections so I just wanted to make sure that I provided um that feedback to [2:05:20] both the board and um the city is interested in um having [2:05:26] another joint agreement with us that outlines um exactly what that those [2:05:32] expenses will be and what they will be um required to do but that's actually [2:05:38] outlined in state law um so we will be working on that over the summer um with that background I guess [2:05:47] I'll turn it over to board members for any comments or additional questions that they might have have before we vote [2:05:52] on [2:05:59] this it doesn't look like people have any questions or comments so the only thing that um I will say is um uh from [2:06:08] my perspective um I'm not a huge fan of this I think it's the right thing to do [2:06:15] from a budgetary perspective um I'm concerned about Schoolboard elections [2:06:21] getting lost in the regular year elections with everything else that [2:06:26] people are voting on so I would just implore the community of Edina to make [2:06:31] sure that they still pay attention to our School Board elections um that they don't get lost in [2:06:39] the shuffle of other larger races that are going on during even years and that [2:06:46] as much as possible people resist the urge to um politicize and line our [2:06:52] school district elections with the political races that will be going on um [2:06:58] our Schoolboard races are supposed to be nonpartisan and I will from my own [2:07:06] experience can tell you that you never know what party people think people are [2:07:12] aligned with has nothing to do with their performance on the school board so I am concerned about people aligning [2:07:19] Schoolboard candidates with political signs and making assumptions um I implore people to keep [2:07:24] an open mind about people running for school board and to really do your research and [2:07:31] um I think that's all I have with that uh we can move to a vote allenberg hi [2:07:39] arum hi Barry hi Birman hi gabler hi [2:07:47] hovie hi man hi thank you vote of it's our second [2:08:14] second policy chair gabler would you like to guide this [2:08:19] discussion sure uh the only one that I want to draw your attention to is policy [2:08:26] 403 and we have director sailor with us just to highlight uh the couple little [2:08:32] parts that uh we went back and reviewed based on feedback from the [2:08:39] board thank you director gayer um chair allenburg Dr Stanley and members of the [2:08:44] board so board policy 403 covers the discipline of School District employees [2:08:50] we had a thorough conversation in a prior work session about adding some [2:08:57] additional information to this board policy particularly around the idea of [2:09:02] adding definitions to Aid the reader to understand specifically the um some [2:09:08] newly added drugs that are prohibited by this policy as a result um the board's [2:09:14] policy committee uh met and added a [2:09:19] section three definitions um you can [2:09:24] see added the relevant drugs and [2:09:29] alcohol uh to this particular policy and then made the only so that was the only [2:09:36] change to the first part of the policy and then there was a very slight change [2:09:42] under um excuse me under section four paragraph C misconduct and then [2:09:49] under point um added the newly legal drugs that [2:09:55] employees are prohibited from using on the job um or off the job if they would [2:10:02] impact their performance on the job as well and then the last thing is is we [2:10:07] simply took the procedures for administrator the policy which um prior [2:10:14] to this recommendation um were in the appendix [2:10:19] the appendix and now in have been moved to the body of the policy and we [2:10:24] discussed those briefly last month all of these changes and and then realized [2:10:30] that the prior policy was still in the packet so um so just now you can [2:10:36] actually see what those changes look like so are there any [2:10:46] questions board members does that satisfy the questions and kind of add a little [2:10:52] Clarity great and thank you for um bringing that to our attention as I [2:10:58] indicated a little bit earlier it's it's helpful to have lots of eyes on these policies because different people bring different perspectives or view it things [2:11:04] in a different way so thank you all for taking the time to review all these policies when you're preparing for board [2:11:10] meetings so and thank you director sailor for fine-tuning that policy so that it reads as clearly as possible [2:11:18] great thanks match yep all right um have art that is displayed in our boardroom and [2:13:03] this month there are collages drawings paintings and mixed media works by [2:13:09] artists from Countryside Highlands and Countryside and Highlands Elementary School many of the pieces celebrate the [2:13:15] season of spring with color and texture each week kindergarten through fifth grade artists use creativity to explore [2:13:22] revise and display their work to the community we are excited to share that [2:13:28] information with you this is from um um Jenna Courtney one of our um Educators [2:13:35] and um this week they'll be having a family viewing opportunity on Wednesday [2:13:42] May 15th from 5:30 to 6:30 pm and if you work in at the Edina um um [2:13:52] uh Community Center or um any of the students that are in our building you know we have two schools in our building [2:13:58] they will have an opportunity to view the artwork from noon to 1 on um May [2:14:05] 16th um I am always just blown away by the artwork that our kids are doing and [2:14:11] then um in case you did not know we also have um works that are being displayed [2:14:16] at the library in ninaa as well and I strongly encourage you to go over and see um some of the unique pieces that [2:14:23] are there this share um here's a letter and it comes from Brooke Alo and she [2:14:30] says Dear Dr San D Schoolboard I wanted to share the attached photo I'm not sharing that photo to everyone but it [2:14:36] did include a photo because it highlights multiple aspects of the EPS ecosystem working together to create a [2:14:43] great outcome for a valie middle school student my boys are seventh and nth grade are in seventh and nth grades and [2:14:49] are both very involved with the value View Middle School unified program one is currently a [2:14:54] participant um the in the program at valy viw middle school and the other was actively involved in the program during [2:15:01] his time at valy viiew middle school and still goes back several days per week to [2:15:06] volunteer in the program after the end of the high school day they were at their club swim [2:15:12] practice recently and ran into their sixth grade friend who is one of their buddies in the UniFi program she was at [2:15:19] the pool because her younger brother had joined our swim club and was coming to his practice my son Andy was at the pool [2:15:26] because her younger brother had joined our swim club and was coming oh sorry my [2:15:31] son Andy asked her if she'd liked to swim she said yes I love swimming but I [2:15:37] can't be on the team my son explained to her that he and his brother coach a team that she can join it is an Adaptive swim [2:15:44] team for swimmers with Down Syndrome autism Etc her face immediately lit up [2:15:51] and she Saidi can be on a team for me and you can cheer for me while I swim [2:15:56] and go fast she was so excited that she stopped everyone who walked by during [2:16:01] the next 30 minutes and told them I am going to be on a swim team too it is a [2:16:07] swim team for me I tried to explain the Adaptive swim program to her mother but [2:16:13] her mother is a native Spanish speaker who is not yet confident in [2:16:18] English excuse me I emailed the special special education teacher at Val Middle [2:16:23] School jod to ask her whether there were any EPS [2:16:30] resources who could help her family get her registered for the swim program Jody immediately contact [2:16:37] connected me with Dr Bianca I'm sorry Dr Blanca Diaz de Leon the EPS Spanish [2:16:43] language family leaz on who was able to translate for me and to support mom [2:16:48] getting her registered she has been talking about the swim team [2:16:54] every time our son has visited her classroom for unified activities this week she told him multiple times you are [2:17:01] going to be so proud of me on Saturday when I am on the swim team the photo shows the boys coaching [2:17:08] her for the very first time she is a great swimmer and might even have a chance to participate in the EHS JV [2:17:14] girls swim team in some manner when she's in high school I wanted to share [2:17:19] this with you because it really highlights the power of eps programs such as unified program and the Spanish [2:17:25] language liazon to ensure that all EPS students can be successful in reaching their full [2:17:32] potential we are so lucky to be in a district that prioritizes these types of resources and it is so powerful to see [2:17:39] how they can lead to a truly inclusive environment when they work together as [2:17:46] intended thought that was pretty incredible yeah and [2:17:52] everything and then this final one is um about our Early Learning Center [2:17:58] programming dear Dr Stanley am Marie Leah and the board I hope this letter finds you well my name is Amy bergerson [2:18:04] and I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the exceptional Educators at the ELC particularly the [2:18:11] tender toats class as the parent of a two-year-old enrolled in the ELC and as the PTO president for the upcoming year [2:18:18] I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound impact that Brenda Linda Kimberly and Mary Ellen [2:18:25] have had on both my child and our community this is all underlined they [2:18:31] are four of the best Educators I have had the opportunity to work with having been a teacher for nine years and [2:18:37] currently pursuing my doctorate in educational leadership and policy I can attest to the caliber of Educators in [2:18:43] this class their education expertise and genuine care for their [2:18:48] students are commendable my son bold printed underlined loves [2:18:54] school he cheers when it is Wednesday morning and he knows he will go to the ELC he sings songs from class all the [2:19:01] time tells her family about how wonderful his teachers are and wants to read the books they read in class I am [2:19:07] so thankful that his first exposure to our education system has been so positive and warm he was sad today when [2:19:14] I left to go to our parent section but when I asked if he wanted a hug he told me no and ran straight to Linda for a [2:19:21] hug he fell last weekend at the playground and asked if I would get Kim to give him a hug he recently told his [2:19:28] grandma that Mary Ellen was his best friend he talks about teacher Brenda at the dinner table regularly these are all [2:19:36] a testament to the nurturing environment they have cultivated within the classroom Beyond his positive [2:19:43] experiences I am deeply grateful for the support and guidance I have received from these remarkable Educators during a [2:19:49] challenging early parenting period last year Brenda provided invaluable support she offered reassurance and resources to [2:19:56] navigate difficult times for me and our son similarly Linda's insights and expertise have empowered me as a parent [2:20:03] equipping me with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions for my child their unwavering support [2:20:09] has not only enriched his educational Journey but has also profoundly impacted [2:20:14] my growth as a parent and individual as teacher appreciation week is underway this came in last week I am [2:20:22] reminded of the importance of recognizing and celebrating the dedication of Educators who go above and [2:20:27] beyond for their students and families while this week serves as a special occasion to Express gratitude I firmly [2:20:33] believe that Brenda Linda Kimberly and Mary Ellen's contributions deserve recognition every day in closing I [2:20:41] extend my heartfelt gratitude to the entire Early Learning Center team seeing when I'm out in about in classrooms um in our schools all the time it just um makes me so proud and I [2:21:31] hope that it makes our community proud to know um just what an amazing [2:21:36] experience it is to attend e Public Schools that's my that's my report [2:21:46] Michael Dr Stan I just want to make sure you know that uh Brenda and Lind were my [2:21:52] kids Early Learning Center teachers Linda in fact was my son's first teacher [2:21:59] in the baby in me class when he was not even three years three months old so not only are they incredible 15 [2:22:06] years ago they're still incredible to this day and it's not a surprise and [2:22:12] what I would say to our wonderful parent um Amy who wrote that is that uh Karen [2:22:20] my good friend Karen who's across the way from me our former board member Jamie Shaw we all were in those classes [2:22:25] together and lo and behold over many years we found our way to the school board so not only do we have future
