[Music] welcome to agenda Edina a program summarizing the actions taken at City Hall that affect you most I'm your host dorthia Marty to help meet the city's housing and sustainability goals the city council has approved a new type of housing in Idina accessory dwelling units or adus are now allowed under city code an Adu is a self-contained residential unit with its own living room kitchen and bathroom on the same parcel of land as a single family house an Adu can be located within attached to or detached from the main house adus are known by many other names including accessory Apartments backyard Cottages coach houses granny Flats guest houses and in-law suites among others adus have been identified in some of the city's guiding documents as a potential tool to further housing and sustainability goals the Planning Commission studied the issue for more than a year before recommending an ordinance that would allow them any Dina in terms of benefits adus provide tremendous list of benefits some include the ability to have multi-generational housing the ability to age in place and even semi-independent living situations so for example if you have an aging parent or if you have a child with disabilities and AD is a great option for that as for next steps we're looking forward to the implementation of the ordinance and building guidelines so that residents could take full advantage of this opportunity Edina is now one of more than 25 Twin Cities metro area communities allowing adus including Bloomington Hopkins minetonka Richfield and St Louis Park did you know that 96% of all businesses in the city are classified as small businesses these local employers are not only important to the economy they also contribute to the well-being and vibrancy of the community the 50th in France Business and Professional Association is working to promote 150 of these businesses in ways that are fun for the whole family Edina TV shows us how and introduces us to its new director now therefore the city council of the city of ID is hereby proclaimed April 28th through May 4th 2024 as Small Business Week car celebrating a Local Economic Force small businesses they really are the lifeblood of our community accepted in part by the 50th in France Business and Professional association's new director there was a lot to do as soon as I got on um my feet and and started the position there perfect okay like making a visit to 50th in France more than a shopping trip but an event even the little ones will hop to like an Easter egg hunt held for the first time in March what families will do is they'll start discovering all that's at 50th in France so they're going to get to hop into different businesses the businesses will all have a treat for them a reason to break with routine and internet shopping to explore this business district the children that have the most checks on their postcard win a golden egg full of tickets to the din theater one of several events planned for the year designed to remind visitors that shopping locally keeps dollar in the community when you go in and you start supporting a small business you're supporting a family you're supporting a local person who is doing this for the love of being an entrepreneur and providing a service to you a collective effort by small businesses at fifth in France to promote the economic well-being of the area and I think it's really important that people remember how great it feels to be in community with each other well making the shopping experience to remember at 50th in France want to visit the Edina Art Fair Friday May 31st through Sunday June 2nd at 50th in France there will be free parking and a free shuttle to the event from Idina City Hall on Saturday and Sunday the Adina human rights and relations commission will host its 13th annual days of remembrance event later this month this year's event titled genocide in Ukraine from Stalin to Hitler to Putin will take place in the council chambers of Ed City Hall 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday May 15th keynote speaker will be Ellen J Kennedy and din resident and founder and executive director of world without genocide a renowned human rights organization the event will delve into the harrowing realities faced by the Ukrainian people through history Kennedy will address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine along with the atrocities of Hitler that claimed nearly 1.6 million Jewish lives and Stalin's genocidal starvation that claimed nearly 4 million lives all in Ukraine well we're really honored to have Dr Kennedy who is uh the founder and ex I director world without genocide and she's a nationally and internationally recognized expert on the subject we're going to continue to honor uh every year the the memory of the millions of people who were uh killed during the Nazi era uh but Dr Kennedy is going to focus on a continuing genocide that's really happened since the Stalin era in Ukraine and it's a good reminder the genocide goes on today as it did uh back in the 30s and 40s for those who cannot attend in person the event will also be broadcast live on Edina TV and streamed live on Edina mn.gov live meetings May is Asian American native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month observed annually it's a time to reflect upon and celebrate the remarkable role of the a nhpi community in our
