[4:21] good afternoon my name is steve buettner and i'm the director of media and technology for edina public schools [4:28] i want to welcome you to one of our many sessions that we're having for supporting our parents for hybrid [4:34] and distance learning or what a dyna public school is calling eva which stands for edina virtual [4:40] academy today what we're going to do is go through some of the technology tools that we'll be using at the elementary [4:46] level to support your child in the year 2020-2021 school year [4:52] as you know we do have a mix of of in-person and distance learning [4:58] happening this year we think it's important that we provide our families with enough background [5:04] so they understand the technology tools that their child will use with their teacher and as important how [5:10] teachers and parents will use technology and how parents can support their students using technology [5:21] again my name is steve buettner and i'd like to introduce the other two people who will be joining me today sean my name is sean beverson and i am [5:29] the elementary digital learning specialist for edina public schools and mike [5:38] muted mike beautiful uh if you're playing bingo at [5:45] home you've got one square in there i am michael walker i'm secondary digital learning specialist here in edina [5:52] thanks mike what we hope to talk about today and [5:58] cover in great detail for you are the following our digital learning ecosystem here at edina public schools [6:06] and know that it is a continuation of the tools we've been using for a number of years edina has a long tradition of using [6:13] technology we continue to use technology it's just a little more pervasive in how we use it in an elementary level [6:19] this year and last spring the technology tools that your teachers will use with your [6:25] students and the technology tools that your teachers will use with you and how you can help support [6:32] your child with the technology tools they use [6:37] some of the communications methods and expectations for when and how often you'll hear from your [6:42] teachers and your students what to expect in instruction in a [6:49] schedule a week in a glass a glance and the content and how often it will be delivered [6:57] where you can get support either technology support or you can get additional information [7:02] and questions answered and then at the some time for questions you should have [7:09] received the bitly link already uh which is a google doc or google form that you can use to [7:15] submit questions now and we should have some time remaining at the end of the session that you can then submit your questions [7:22] and why answer those questions but we want to make sure that the learning continues even after this session [7:27] and so feel free to continue to use that google form to submit additional questions you might have [7:34] going forward we'll make sure that we get those questions route those to the right people so you can get the answers you need [7:40] to support your child [7:48] here is a list of the technology tools that will be that are used in edina and i'll go into a little bit more [7:56] detail probably at the center of our technology tools is what we call edina apps [8:03] that's a single sign-on portal which allows parents students and staff to have one stop [8:10] shop to access their like their instructional tools or to help their [8:15] child with their instructional tools remember that both our staff [8:22] and our students and our parents have their own unique username and password [8:27] and we really don't think encourage parents to use student usernames and passwords nor do [8:33] we encourage students to use the parents usernames and passwords for and we'll explain that more in [8:39] detail in a moment our portal works both on a browser from a regular computer but it's also [8:45] responsive design so it should work on a smartphone as well and the tip for our parents is the [8:52] parents username is typically your last name period followed by your first name let me show [9:00] you a little bit about how that works [9:06] so i'm at the portal and the portal is dynaschools.org you can find a link at our main edina [9:12] public schools website you'll put your username and password in and you'll press sign in [9:19] and it will bring up a series of icons no there's been a huge [9:26] desire to make sure that we have the applications that are the best applications for instruction [9:32] and what we've chosen to do is instead of buying one application that serves all of our needs we've taken approach that is called best [9:38] of breed which means that we have tools that help support our kids and [9:44] support our parents that are the best so instead of having to compromise we think we've got the [9:49] best tools for them from left to right on our screen you'll see schoology which is our learning [9:55] i'll talk more about that campus which is what we call our system of record that's an important [10:03] tool that you'll use to see things like schedules to be able to get your email of your teachers [10:09] to be able to change information about contact information in the system be able to see what bus routes your [10:15] child runs to pay a lunch balances and to access other [10:20] information as your child goes through the system tech status will show you the [10:27] status of any of the technical systems we're using hopefully they're all running well today they've been running really well [10:33] but if we have an outage or if we have an issue we'll post that on that so you can always check learner's edge is the [10:39] dashboard for our parents to be able to see historical information about their children things like assessment [10:46] grades scores what schedule they have our menu information [10:54] are my info update which you use to designate your instructional preference this fall and [10:59] then also to update your contact information and just recently added the instructional dashboard [11:05] so i'll link to our 2020 2021 dashboard which will go into more detail in a [11:11] moment i also want to point out that up in corner is a box which allows you to reset your [11:19] password which we are encouraging all family members to do that make sure you have your own unique username and password [11:25] that you'll remember and then also to set your recovery email what that means [11:30] is that if you go in set this by adding an email address that you'll that you uh [11:36] often check if you forget your password in the future you can have that password [11:42] reset link sent to that email now remember by default that's empty and so if you do want to take advantage of the [11:48] sick set recovery email you need to enter a email address in the system [11:54] and save it [12:05] so again here are the icons and you see we just added another icon just a moment ago but we'll keep adding and taking away as [12:11] needed i just want to point out that your student will see something a little bit different so this [12:16] is the icons that your child will see in edina abs and again you'll see there are [12:22] more icons there because your child may be interacting with the teacher with additional tools or being able to access [12:28] different systems that parents don't have a view into also it's really important that if you [12:34] are logging on as your student is that you get your password because the information [12:40] is unique to our users students see information that's different than our parents [12:48] some of the key tools that you'll be using are learning management tools which are [12:54] for k through 2 seesaw and then third through 12th grade schoology and [12:59] then other tools that we use quite a bit of and we'll go into detail today is google meets [13:05] which is our video conferencing tool and then google is what your students use to share files [13:11] and collaborate it's their productivity suite if you will on how they'll be able to create documents share documents [13:18] and print documents let me go into a little more detail [13:23] about our learning management system or what we commonly refer to as our lms what is an lms [13:31] basically an lms or learning management system is the virtual classroom that your teachers [13:36] and students will be using when they're not in class or when you miss a day and you need to access [13:42] information or when you want to catch up or find information it's that virtual classroom [13:47] or that virtual window into that classroom both seesaw and schoology can be [13:54] accessed via a app or via the browser and we'll go into more detail [14:00] in a moment again it's your main window into the class and it looks different for your student [14:06] than it does for you so again it's important to remember that how your child [14:11] interacts with the learning management system with the teacher will look different than how you [14:16] interact with it because of data privacy issues and because of security issues [14:22] you won't be able to see exactly what your child sees but you'll be able to look at it and get access to some [14:27] information in a window into that class and then i'll just put in a plug and we'll show you in more detail we'll want [14:34] to make sure you sign up for announcements so you're getting up-to-date information from these systems [14:43] for video conferencing the district uses google meets we've chosen google meets because it [14:49] fits well in our ecosystem it is a nice walled garden and so we can manage who can have access to google [14:56] meets we can control who's allowed into google meets who's not allowed into google meets [15:02] and it works on all of the devices that our students staff and parents might use indeed [15:09] google me works on any computer as well as it has an android or an ios app so you can put it [15:15] on your phone you can put it on ipad and all your our district ipads and devices will have [15:21] google meet it has a nice feature where you can join a google meet either [15:27] from a computer or a smartphone or you can join a conversation with a telephone number [15:34] this is incredibly useful if a teacher sets up an opportunity to have a [15:39] conference with a parent they may send you a google meet link which is a telephone number that you [15:44] simply call and then it connects you to your teacher so you can have a conversation [15:51] your students will be provided proper etiquette and rules and we also have this document [15:57] on our dashboard but it's important that your child begins to practice video conferencing etiquette like making [16:04] sure that when you enter a video conference that you mute your audio and then determine whether or not [16:09] you want to share video you can start with your video turned off you can turn it on when needed [16:15] or you can leave it off and we'll share this slide deck but i have a link here [16:20] with some great instructions and some tutorials that helped you leverage google meet and learn more about google [16:26] me in the future i'm now going to turn it over to sean [16:32] where we can talk a little bit about communications and what to expect thanks steve so i will talk to you a [16:38] little bit about the communications uh and what you will see this is uh this presentation is focused [16:45] on our hybrid situation and so one of the ways that this fall will be different than our [16:50] spring is actually able to come to school and so our communication will be [16:56] both in person you will get information from the teacher while the kids at school but [17:01] then also some information available to you online and so what we're asking [17:07] teachers is to provide a weekly overview of what can be expected during that week [17:12] in order to help you with planning and to help the students know what they're supposed to do during [17:17] that week we are going to cover in this presentation how to sign up for [17:22] schoology and the difference between the family app in seesaw and the class app in seesaw [17:30] and how you can use that to stay connected to the classroom when in doubt contact your classroom [17:36] teacher and your teacher will help you find the right way to communicate [17:42] one of the things that i want to acknowledge is as we begin this year in a way that no one would [17:48] have ever planned for we will have to figure out some best [17:53] best methods for communication we have targeted that to schoology seesaw and in some cases [18:00] email to make sure that that is available for everybody but i am aware uh we are all aware that that will be [18:07] methods and modes that are worked out during the first week of school [18:17] so here's an example of what the high model schedule looks like from the highest [18:23] level so we're talking about from a district approach that we have two cohorts of students the [18:29] a cohort and the b cohort each cohort of students will have uh uh time in the classroom on site [18:37] two days a week and they will have two days a week where they are at home connected in [18:43] various ways wednesday is our teacher prep day it's a day in which teachers will work [18:50] together with their plcs which are their professional learning communities or their teacher teams [18:56] to review how students are doing as far as the change between hybrid online a great [19:03] opportunity for our teachers to collaborate and to think through what we need to do next to help [19:08] students remain engaged and connected this school year they'll also do some planning for the [19:14] weeks ahead so that they can communicate that to you in a way that helps you to [19:19] plan and then they'll also be going through some other training and continuing to develop [19:24] their own understanding and skills as we work through this fall season [19:33] and then we get a little bit closer on the next slide where now we start to talk about what it might look like in the classroom [19:39] so you can see this column there are opportunities for morning meetings [19:45] the literacy workshop the math workshop they will be having lunch and recess in school and will be seeing [19:52] their specialists regularly at home there's going to be time for collaboration [19:57] either with students in the class or for their cohort of the students that are at home [20:03] teachers will communicate and post information available for you and for the students through our [20:10] learning platforms literacy workshop is still going to show up at occasions [20:15] during the time when students are at home as well as the math workshop and then the specialists will be on [20:22] asynchronous schedules on wednesday to work with the students as well and then the next [20:29] slide we get even a little bit closer this is an example of a schedule from one of our classrooms [20:36] and so now you can see the teachers doing their planning and how this might look in their [20:42] classroom to support the students both at home and in the classroom and so if you look [20:47] at the math session it says live instruction will take place from eight to nine [20:53] and then the cohort uh that is at home which would be the thursday friday group [20:58] it says possible live so a way to connect to the classroom during those sessions [21:03] but what you can see here is a detailed schedule that reflects a [21:08] lot of thought and consideration about how to keep their students all working together [21:15] regardless of where they come and so we're looking at this in what are three learning environments the [21:21] in-person sessions so times where they're in the classroom or times where they're connecting live [21:27] via google meet independent sessions times when they are working by themselves to practice a skill [21:34] or develop around a concept and then there will be small group sessions as well and small group [21:40] sessions in the classroom will look different but there will also be opportunities for small group sessions [21:47] through google meet using para support or classroom teacher support to help [21:53] coordinate kids working together regardless of where they are sitting [22:05] and now i'm going to talk a little bit more about the platforms in which you will get this information [22:11] so our learning management systems are as steve had mentioned lms is our digital classroom space [22:18] and so for k12 the standard is seesaw and one of the things to note [22:24] about seesaw is that it actually has two entry points there is a class [22:30] app and there is a family app and those are two different services for this [22:36] account or two different entry points for the same account the class app has been installed [22:42] on district provided ios devices you are not able to install other apps on the [22:48] district provided ios devices so that we can help manage that ecosystem the privacy settings the requirements [22:56] so you won't be able to install the family app but i'll talk about that in just a [23:02] second so the class app is how the students will connect you likely have received a qr code [23:08] from your teacher that qr code is the home access code for seesaw and what that [23:15] home access code does is creates a private link between your student and the teacher at [23:22] school and this way the teacher can see your child's work but your child will not be [23:27] exposed to other students in the class unless it's something that the teacher wants to share broadly across [23:33] the entire class and the family app is the app that you use as a family [23:40] member to view the updates about what's going on in class and so you need to download a [23:47] separate app that app is available on ios android and also on the web and so a distinction [23:54] between the two entry points for seesaw so then what does that look like [24:00] so then talk about um what your child will experience while [24:05] they are in seesaw and so here's a quick view from the child side of things from the class app into [24:13] what it looks like to do work in seesaw and so what i've highlighted here is the activities so this is a student [24:21] view the activities are listed on the left hand side and this student has yet to make a [24:28] response to the first activity seesaw tools background in order to make [24:33] a response they simply tap the green add a response and then they'll be taken to the seesaw editor to make their [24:40] response you'll notice there are six activities listed those are six [24:45] activities that the student has yet to open so those are all under the to do folder when a student opens [24:53] the activity it will go into the in progress area that means that they have opened an [24:59] activity but have yet to submit it and then when they submit it and a teacher reviews it [25:04] it will go under the done category so that's a nice addition to seesaw that they've started [25:10] to add a few different ways for you to track what's going on in addition to that you'll note that [25:16] there is an inbox on the right hand side and this becomes a really important tool [25:21] for communication between the student and the teacher when they aren't able to be together in the classroom space [25:28] that in my available in the family app but in that case it is a direct link [25:35] between you the family members and the classroom teacher the teachers will share with you the best way to get [25:41] in touch with them and to communicate with them seesaw is a powerful option for that [25:48] the next view we actually see what it looks like for a student submitting an activity and so here is [25:55] what the edit field looks like in seesaw and so [26:00] a few things to highlight the instructions will always be available even when they're in the create mode [26:07] there's a set of creation tools one of the ones that i would highlight on this for our young [26:13] youngest learners is the ability to record audio and video submissions as a way to [26:19] help students respond to prompts or questions from the teacher before they're comfortable with typing [26:26] or even handwriting included in this you can see there's directions from the teacher via a video [26:32] link and so this pain is all set up for a student to lead through the activity and try a few [26:39] things and then when they're done they click the green arrow and that will then be recorded as [26:45] done so that is what seesaw looks like from a student view [26:55] now what does schoology look like and so starting in third grade students be schoology [27:02] and schoology is the platform from third through twelfth grade and so that's a lot of time to become [27:08] familiar with this learning management system and the place where information will be available [27:14] this is logged in as a student to a fifth grade class and as you can see mr mccarthy has a [27:19] homeroom folder and then under that homeroom folder is a number [27:24] of the subject areas are listed as folders as well and you can see the clean view of a [27:32] student to this schoology course below mr mccarthy's homeroom folder [27:38] is the specialists folder and under that folder will be work provided by the specialists for the [27:45] students to access an important thing to note is on the right hand side as a way to keep track of what things [27:53] are going on and when the due dates are there's actually a calendar that is automatically generated [27:58] in schoology based on the due dates that teachers submit and so this is a handy way to be [28:05] able to see what's coming up and if your child happens to miss a due date [28:10] it will be noted that it is late or that it is missing in this field as well so we'll go a little bit [28:17] closer now and look at what an assignment cycle might look like in schoology so here is an assignment in [28:25] schoology there you can see that day instructions and so there in that folder [28:31] has listed some instructions for the students to follow and then included in that folder is a [28:37] link for resources so the things that they might need to review that were shared directly by the teacher or made [28:43] available for later a video tutorial so a great example of how video can be incorporated [28:48] and used to support student learning a quick assessment so that is a quiz and in many [28:54] cases those quizzes are self grading so they give instant feedback to the student to let them know [29:00] if they're on the right track and then the real important feature or one that i like a lot [29:05] is the discussion um for the area and so this is a place for students to post [29:11] questions and really the nice thing about this is that students can actually answer each other's questions as well [29:17] so discussions are a more public forum public in that they are available to other kids [29:23] in the class but not available broadly across the internet and so if you log in as a parent [29:31] you will see many of these resources but you won't be able to see the submissions to those resources so for example [29:38] though you might see the discussion page is there you will not see the unread notifications next to it [29:45] and you will not be able to see to that that is uh for the students and the [29:51] teacher and so so that's what you would see as a parent logging in [29:56] the availability to the resources but not to the submissions of those resources [30:03] and i think that just about covers the overview of our learning management systems for k [30:08] through five [30:17] thanks sean so sean talked through a lot of the technology but of course you may have questions about instruction [30:23] or what does instruction look like or what are some of the pacing or the content and the good news is that the district [30:28] has created a dashboard for the families where you can get answers to those questions and so that is linked actually [30:36] on our front page but as i mentioned we just added that as well to our um portal page for parents and so [30:44] let's see if we can bring that up right now so here is the instructional dashboard and when i click [30:50] on that link it does bring me right to our 2020 2021 [30:56] instructional dashboard uh what you'll see here is we we start off with academics and so [31:02] there is a lot of information about our instructional commitments and academics broken down by early learning [31:09] center elementary middle school and high school as well as other information useful [31:14] information especially in this year of covet our learning models and so there's [31:19] greater detail on the difference between eva and hybrid and how we came to those models and what [31:26] direction we we received from the state of minnesota safe learning spaces of course your [31:32] child's safety is utmost importance to our families our to our staff and to the district and [31:37] so what are we doing to keep our students and our staff safe what do we do for covet monitoring [31:43] transportation nutrition services technology [31:49] mental health and wellness of our students staff and families and community information about athletics and [31:56] activities and then an faq section i'll just quickly go into the [32:01] elementary tab now where we'll see that it does give us information about the elementary [32:08] academics i want to point out that we ask all [32:14] parents and students to do the self-screening protocol daily to make sure that our students are [32:19] coming to school healthy uh we do talk about a little bit about the elementary hybrid model and the [32:26] elementary edina virtual academy model and then there's some calendars [32:31] which i think are going to be useful calendar for this week which is our orientation and conferences week and [32:38] then going on after that what it looks like on subsequent weeks for your child which i think [32:44] shawn went into some detail about as well so this is a great resource i encourage you to [32:49] come back to this website often and leverage that when you have questions about the instructional component of [32:58] our 2020 2020 school year [33:04] mike could you talk a little bit about notifications in schoology yeah i'd be happy to so when you as a [33:10] parent are working with your third through fifth grader you're going to uh log in to schoology to view that [33:17] stuff and when you log in um you'll log in as yourself initially [33:22] but sometimes it defaults to the last person you were looking at so if you were looking at your student [33:28] uh the last time you were in there it may default to that but if you go in and select yourself at the [33:34] top of the screen and then go down to settings you can actually click on a notifications tab which allows you to [33:43] select the specific things you would like to get notifications on so steve's going [33:48] to demonstrate that right now so right now we're looking at michael mouse's student but if he clicks on minnie mouse the [33:54] parent and then goes to settings [34:01] he will see the notifications tab now those top two [34:06] under the course uh updates posted so if a teacher posts an update to a class you [34:11] would get an email on that you could also do the uh course comments and [34:17] updates uh that one as well and then a lot of times down at the bottom [34:22] if your school is sending an update you want to have that one on uh so that you are aware of those things [34:28] that come come to you um but that will help you uh kind of see those those messages [34:37] you should by default get the class messages that get sent if the teacher has included uh all members of [34:44] the course then you would see those as well in your email in some cases those messages may go into [34:50] your junk box if you don't open them all the time so that may be something that you want to [34:56] check in your mail system the next thing [35:02] if we go uh as the parent and select mini and go down to michael again or [35:09] marvin doesn't matter you can select any one of your students and if you go to settings as the student [35:18] and select notifications now you get a different view and in that view you can actually set up [35:25] daily or weekly digest and this is kind of a after the fact here's the progress that [35:31] your children have made and when you do it for one of your children you're doing it for all so you would you would sign up for one [35:37] of these parent email digests maybe it's on for weekly maybe you set it up for a friday afternoon at five [35:44] so that end of the week you can kind of see if there's any outstanding assignments [35:49] or things like that or where the student is at in their progress and that might [35:54] indicate that might influence their activities over the weekend for example you can also check the box to have [36:03] overdue submissions and email for that and once you do that click save changes [36:09] and then those settings will be saved and you'll start receiving those email digests so you do that for any one of [36:15] your students and that will do it for all of them the other thing i will note here on the [36:23] when you're viewing students that if you go into the courses [36:30] as the parent and look at the you can see right away what the grade is [36:36] in the enrollments tab you can go into those courses and view the content that way and you can see any grades that [36:44] have been submitted in regards to that [36:52] so that is setting up those notifications [37:00] and i just wanted to take a moment to remind people watching that these will be available in the family [37:06] dashboard as well and so we like to say the nice thing about creating this recording is that you will be able to play pause [37:14] and rewind that notification portion to make sure that you are set up in a way to help support [37:20] the kids and get the right information that you need thanks john and thanks mike [37:26] so we talked a lot about the tools but we know like sean mentioned uh after today you might [37:32] run into a problem with technology or need some support and so we're here to help out dmts which [37:38] is the department that is providing this training today has uh support in two different ways one is through a [37:45] telephone support and the number is nine five two eight four eight four nine one five [37:51] and that is staffed from seven in the morning until five pm monday through friday we also have an [37:57] email support which creates a ticket for you that is at support dynaschools.org we're [38:04] here to help out and so we'll make sure that we answer those questions and like i said we stay up on that if we find that the [38:11] call volume is increasing or we find that we have additional needs those hours but based on our spring and [38:19] based on the call volume we're getting now we think that that covers the vast majority of the needs of our families [38:25] and our students parents if you have issues with your username and password it's a separate [38:30] email address at parent portal at adinaschools.org irregardless that sometimes your child [38:37] and i'll tell you each child is designated a device and so k through five a child has a device for [38:44] them k through two it's an ipad three through five it's a chromebook they should be getting that device [38:50] through their homeroom teacher now and we have had questions of whether or not [38:55] they have to use that device we think that they can use that device and it's important [39:00] to think about using that device because it's a walled garden again we know that that device is safe we know [39:06] the device is filtered we know that that device the apps work well with us and have data privacy [39:12] installed but you don't have to use that device if you have a computer [39:17] at home and another device all the tools that shawn and mike showed you today are also accessible from any computer or [39:24] any browser again we recommend for a student to log in using their dyna apps to help make sure that there's [39:30] no confusion or no issues with login and credentials if your child's [39:36] device is acting up or having problems with it you need to have it repaired we've got you covered we'll take care [39:42] for the next couple weeks we are providing support through the media center [39:48] and then after that we will have a centralized repair process generally it's an email to support at [39:54] edineschools.org she could provide us your child's name the device maybe the asset tag which is that white [40:00] little tag with a barcode on the back side of your child's computer that will help us problem solve the [40:06] device generally what we do is if the device is not working we'll exchange your child's device with [40:12] another device a working device will repair that device and then we're on [40:18] your child can continue to work in some situations when we deem that the [40:23] the damage is due to negligence or an issue with the student doing something to the device [40:28] outside of a warranty there may be a fee associated with a device repair and that [40:34] charge is thirty dollars again that'll handle be handled all through the repair process [40:48] and again we don't think that today is going to be sufficient we believe it's a great start [40:54] and we wanted to make sure that we've got out in front of our parents questions so that we're [41:00] making sure as a community we're supporting our children's and our st and our our teachers [41:05] so that this year is going to be the most successful it can be given the situation here is a link [41:12] uh to a form where you can submit questions and you can submit questions now but know that this link will remain open [41:20] and if you do have additional questions going forward we'll make sure to get those questions routed to the right person who can help [41:26] answer those questions and get back to you but at this time i think what we'll do is pause [41:32] and see if mike if there's any questions that were submitted that we can answer yes um we've had a [41:38] couple questions about the qr codes for seesaw that [41:45] some had a question of when they will receive those qr codes and then the other question in regards to seesaw [41:51] was in regards to whether the parent code will be sent out [41:57] great thank you mike um so we know uh so qr codes with your child's [42:04] access to see saw including the portal were sent to sites and are being [42:10] distributed through homerooms for the student code teachers [42:16] have access to the parent qr code and will email those out as well and so [42:21] you should receive an email with the family access code one of the other questions was which and [42:29] just to clarify again because it it certainly can be a little bit confusing is if you are downloading [42:37] apps onto a personal device you is going to use that personal device you [42:43] will want to have both the class and the family app if you're using a district provided [42:49] device the class app is already installed and then as a family member you would [42:54] download the family app and you will receive a similar qr code through email that you can scan [43:02] to get logged in to the class [43:08] so one another question that came up is we are providing and i think steve had covered this as well we are [43:14] providing devices for all of our students to be a one-to-one [43:20] program starting in kindergarten so again we will provide devices for students that are set up with the dyna [43:27] apps and have the necessary tools on them the next question was about [43:34] plans to offer typing classes or any recommended learn to type programs [43:41] i can i can take that one thanks mike so the district does purchase a typing tutor program [43:47] called typing pals it's not currently set up yet but we will be setting that up it'll be based on your homeroom classes [43:53] and it's third through fifth grade because the ipads that we send out uh [43:59] are touch and so we don't really start introducing uh keyboarding skills into the third [44:04] grade and so we'll provide your media specialist at your building will probably provide instructions to the [44:11] home access that the good news is that's a web-based application so your child [44:16] again can log in through the portal to access typing pals and be able to practice typing [44:23] there was a question about how to submit homework using schoology and i did send an email uh response with [44:30] a video explaining how that works and we will include some of those videos for students on how [44:36] to how to do different things within uh schoology in our tech dashboard [44:43] in the coming days and the last question then how often are grades and assignments [44:49] updated in schoology daily weekly or it depends on the teacher [44:55] that's a great question and so the the guideline that we would give is that [45:02] each week there should be an update to the assignments that are available in schoology the frequency of that we [45:09] try to set a minimum standard so that weekly that things would be reviewed but that [45:16] the real detail of how that is used and what it looks like in the classroom will work out with the homeroom teacher [45:23] and again this is an acknowledgement that we're doing this differently than we did in the spring and that we have [45:30] real time in the classroom to be able to connect and so how that process works on [45:37] seeing our digital with our in-person experiences will be determined as we [45:44] as we do the work that reminds me of another point that i wanted to make is in this hybrid situation [45:53] different than our distance learning in the spring situation not all of the work that kids are asked [46:00] to do independently while they are not in the classroom will necessarily be digital work [46:05] some of it will be paper-based work where kids are asked to practice using analog [46:12] items non-digital items and so in some cases a teacher may make a note of that in schoology but you [46:19] won't actually be submitting a digital artifact and so they may clear those a little bit different but it's just a good reminder [46:26] that we actually do have advantages this year that we didn't get in the spring because we will have the [46:32] opportunity to be with each other in you know safely distanced [46:37] proximity to provide some of those other materials for learning as well [46:43] sean i think the other important thing to note is that the schoology grade book uh well in in grades 6 through 12 [46:51] is the official grade book that students use and so the overall traditional grade would be [46:57] kept there that is not the case for grades three through five correct [47:02] that is a really good point is that um our elementaries will use that [47:08] gradebook as a record keeping mode so that they can tell due dates and [47:13] things of that nature and provide feedback but they should not be viewed as [47:18] a one-to-one correlation with grading because we grade differently at the elementary level than [47:25] we do at the secondary level and we are not changing our grading practices [47:30] in response to this and so well you may see some zeros and some ones and some twos that may [47:36] initially be you know cause some anxiousness because we typically don't [47:42] like to see those things remember that at the elementary level those are primarily [47:47] used as ways to keep track of what's going on and as a record of the feedback that's been provided [47:58] thanks sean and mike any other questions mike on the forum i'm [48:05] uh one last question about the typing skills uh [48:13] reader would like to learn typing for a home device can we have access to if we want to clearly wouldn't be for [48:20] her school issued ipad mike we have some free suggestions for [48:27] typing programs as well i think those are actually on the media specialists website right [48:33] sean yeah that's right and that's actually another thing to point out that that is available in the portal [48:38] is our media specialists have taken a lot of time to put together a number of additional supplemental resources around [48:46] digital citizenship uh online content creation creative ways to deal with the world [48:53] around you and also some free resources like different tutoring typing tutoring programs that [48:59] are available on the web the other thing i would add to that is that [49:05] from an ergonomic standpoint in general most people who teach [49:12] keyboarding would say that until grade three when the when the [49:17] students hands have reached a size where they can span the full keyboard that doing more informal type things of [49:25] using your left hand for the left hand side and general right hand for the right hand side in general is a better way to go with [49:31] keyboarding up until the age when the student's hands the span of the fingers is big [49:36] enough to support being able to use the full keys because we wouldn't want any repetitive stress injuries in a student [49:43] as they're they're trying to do that when they're not necessarily developmentally ready for that [49:51]
