Well, greetings everybody. This is Jim Huffland, your Adena Mayor, and this is the mayor's minute for Wednesday, December 17, 2025. Another nice day on a really nice week in December. You know, earlier this week, the Adena City Council unanimously approved a statement of support for our Somali American community, those neighbors of ours that are so important to be protecting at this point in time. I've heard from some people who've asked, "Why doesn't the Somali-American community just speak up and defend itself?" It's an honest question and one worth answering. For many Somali Americans, speaking up publicly doesn't always feel safe. Some are refugees who fled war, persecution, or government violence. Others have experienced discrimination, harassment, or threats right here at home. When people are targeted because of who they are, visibility can feel risky, not empowering. It's also important to remember that no one should be required to defend their right to belong. The burden of explaining one's humanity shouldn't fall on those who are already feeling vulnerable about it. That's where allyship really matters. Being an ally means listening before judging. It means speaking out against harmful rhetoric, even when it's uncomfortable, and it means helping create spaces where people feel safe enough to be heard instead of demanding that they step forward alone. Our Somali American neighbors are part of the fabric of Minnesota and part of the fabric of Edina. As parents, students, business owners, healthcare workers, and public servants, all members of our community deserve the same sense of safety, dignity, and belonging. If we want stronger, more connected communities, it starts with empathy and with standing up for one another. And that's what we're doing with our Somali American neighbors.
