steam [2:13] update assessment plan [2:17] um and then we have a few action items [2:19] related to comprehensive literacy Talent [2:21] Development student travel some policies [2:25] that we are bringing forward from the [2:27] policy committee and then we will return [2:31] to the work session from earlier [2:34] great thank you so first up we have our [2:38] excellence in action [2:40] um so exciting to have you guys here [2:41] tonight we will be featuring the winners [2:43] of the student space flight experiments [2:45] program Mission patch design contest and [2:48] we have two students here that are with [2:50] their art teachers so I will just go [2:52] ahead and let you introduce yourself [2:55] hi my name is Shannon Stephen I'm the [2:57] art teacher at Cornelia and I really [2:59] appreciate getting a chance to be here [3:01] in front of the board my student Winston [3:04] Labs is here and he was the Elementary [3:06] winner of the mission patch and Sophie [3:09] Teigen who won the high school level or [3:13] the upper school level and then her art [3:16] teacher dalen town [3:20] so just a quick review the ssep for [3:23] those of you who don't know is a program [3:26] that um put is put on from by NASA in [3:30] order to kind of celebrate the moon [3:32] landing and so it's been going on a few [3:34] years because we're past the anniversary [3:37] but [3:38] um [3:39] basically what they did was offered to [3:41] school children an opportunity to invent [3:44] or create [3:45] um [3:46] different science projects that would be [3:50] hopefully taken to space and tried there [3:52] so experiments next slide please [3:58] so in our district three high school [4:01] students won this experiment the science [4:04] side of it so Edina High School seniors [4:07] Josh cram Colin Shaw along with [4:10] sophomore Grayson irons so they came [4:13] created a project that centered around [4:15] growing food in space [4:17] and then on the elementary or in the [4:20] high school level the second arm kind of [4:22] of this was an art project so they were [4:25] to design a mission patch that kind of [4:28] represented the celebration of the moon [4:30] landing so we held two Mission patch [4:34] competitions one for elementary and one [4:36] for secondary [4:37] students in fifth through 12th grade [4:39] were tasked to make a mission patch for [4:41] the Mission 17 to the International [4:42] Space Station [4:44] so they were invited to use their [4:45] mission patch competitions to [4:47] commemorate the 50th anniversary of the [4:49] Apollo Landings on the moon next [4:54] next slide [5:00] so these are the elementary finalists [5:03] four of our elementary schools uh [5:05] participated in this activity and so [5:08] there are three Patches from each of the [5:10] schools and the students voted and uh [5:15] voted for the final winner who was [5:17] Winston and then the high school [5:20] finalist I don't know if you have [5:22] anything you want me to say specifically [5:24] about that but for each of the two [5:35] to [5:36] participated in the design [5:41] to a group of nine and then the students [5:43] revoted wow yep and so final slide [5:48] shows our two winners [5:50] on the left is Winston and Winston's a [5:53] fifth grader at Cornelia Elementary and [5:56] on the right is Sophia Teigen and she's [5:58] a senior right yeah [6:01] yeah so that it was just such a [6:03] fantastic experience for us to have a [6:05] real life [6:08] opportunity to design things for [6:10] something that's actually [6:12] requested and interested and so their [6:15] designs actually go to space and so they [6:19] will be receiving them back in official [6:21] packaging that says that it's been to [6:23] space which is [6:24] so amazing yeah so [6:27] we really appreciated it [6:29] excellent that is so great thank you [6:33] um I would love to hear from Winston [6:36] first [6:38] and if any other board members have [6:40] questions jump in but I would love to [6:41] know how did you come how did you start [6:43] this design process like what were what [6:46] were you thinking when you were putting [6:48] that together what was going on in your [6:49] mind [6:50] um I found like a a picture of something [6:54] and I use that for reference and then I [6:57] kind of just worked from there [7:00] that's excellent it's great [7:04] could you maybe talk a little bit about [7:06] the key elements in your design [7:08] um [7:12] obviously and Lee in front and then the [7:14] moon in the background [7:17] um and then Stars [7:24] true [7:28] that's great and Sophia can you tell us [7:32] a little bit about your design and where [7:34] the inspiration came from yeah [7:36] um uh I believe the theme of the [7:41] um whole thing this year is like uh [7:45] progress [7:46] so I did the kind of the the era around [7:50] the earth and I did it in green kind of [7:53] for like an environmental [7:55] Twist on it [7:57] yeah [8:01] do any board members have go ahead [8:02] director gabler yes Sophia I have a [8:05] question so they said you're a senior do [8:07] you see yourself using art Beyond when [8:10] you leave the walls of Edina [8:12] yeah [8:13] um I'm going to Madison next year and [8:16] I'll probably double major [8:18] in environmental science and art so [8:21] hopefully I will combine them wow [8:24] awesome you can add this to your resume [8:26] yeah yeah congratulations to both of you [8:30] one more quick question do have we [8:33] thought at all about are we producing [8:35] these patches in any way shape or form [8:36] you I understand you're taking one up to [8:39] space and it'll come back to you which [8:40] is great but have we thought about as a [8:43] fundraiser or something like that to [8:44] produce these patches and sell to our [8:46] Hornet community [8:49] that is a great idea director Bergman I [8:53] just mean because I actually have the [8:55] original Patches from the Apollo [8:57] missions because I used to collect them [8:58] as a child [9:00] um and so when I see something like this [9:02] I remember what it was that we've been doing this year [10:51] specifically around Edina virtual [10:54] pathway that'll be the first portion of [10:56] the report then the Spanish dual [10:59] language program and then we will end [11:01] with the steamwork that a number of our [11:03] teachers and administrators and teaching [11:07] learning staff have been focused on [11:10] Stephen Collison Collison sorry sitting [11:14] next to me our coordinator of redina [11:16] virtual pathway and I'll turn it over to [11:19] him in a moment but part of what we want [11:22] to articulate is that through these [11:24] reports these are ways that we're trying [11:27] to articulate and describe evidence for [11:30] how our district is advancing strategic [11:32] initiative a the advancement of [11:35] Excellence growth and Readiness and so [11:38] we'll talk a little bit about how that [11:40] plays out in Edina virtual pathway how [11:42] it has played out in Spanish dual [11:44] language and in Steam with that I'm [11:46] going to turn it over to Stephen to give [11:48] us a high level overview of what's [11:50] happening with the Edina virtual pathway [11:53] good evening thank you very much for [11:55] this opportunity to talk about Edina [11:57] virtual pathway we try to provide a [12:03] brief but detailed informative report [12:06] in that report as this evening there's a [12:09] balance to be struck between [12:11] acknowledging the things that are going [12:13] very well taking pride in them and [12:15] recognizing them but also taking a [12:17] moment to consider the areas in which we [12:19] need to improve [12:21] among the things that are going well [12:24] online at the elementary and secondary [12:27] programs we are providing education with [12:30] characteristic Edina rigor and we're [12:33] providing that education often for [12:35] students who may be unable to attend in [12:39] person who are more comfortable and [12:41] learn best at home Mr Collison I'm going
