Proposed Transition of Assessing Services to Hennepin County
The Edina assessing division currently employs seven full-time staff and is responsible for establishing estimated market value, determining property classification, maintaining property records, conducting annual quintile property reviews, processing new construction reviews, administering the appeals process and board of equalization, and coordinating with Hennepin County on assessment programs. Hennepin County already provides assessing services to all Hennepin County municipalities except Edina, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, and St. Louis Park, plus Fort Snelling and MSP International Airport. The proposed transition aims to reduce municipal costs and property tax burden. Financial projections indicate savings of approximately $500,000 in 2026 and $1 million annually from 2027 onward. Maple Grove is also considering a similar transition. Exact transition details remain to be determined through negotiations between City Manager Scott Neil and Hennepin County over the coming weeks.
