leadership updates and um there is a c [3:41] there are a couple of information items that are in the board packet as well thank you Dr Stanley um we do not [3:49] have excellence in action this month so we're going to move straight to our hearing for members of the public um and [3:54] before we hear from them just a reminder about our community comment guidelines um first of all we want to thank um [4:01] community members and our stakeholders for being flexible with our community comment guidelines um we've tried to maintain [4:08] our community comment process despite moving our meetings online and we're happy that we've been able to offer [4:15] virtual community comments um when individuals signed in and asked to speak [4:21] you acknowledged an understanding and adherence to board policy 206 which are Community comment guidelines pursuant to [4:28] this policy each speaker has a max maximum of 3 minutes to speak when those three minutes are up you must conclude [4:34] your remarks if you do not wrap up quickly your time allotment at the virtual meeting will end this time is [4:40] not designated to address items concerning specific staff or students and personal attacks by anyone at the [4:46] podium are unacceptable if this happens you will be warned and if you persist you will no [4:51] longer be able to continue your remarks any feedback about District employees [4:56] needs to go to their respective site level leader the superintendent or be submitted to the board in [5:03] writing um during public comment period our role as a board is to listen but [5:09] this is not the place for the board to resolve any concerns and as such no comments will be made from the board [5:15] issues will potentially be referred to the superintendent for appropriate followup thank you very much for your [5:20] cooperation and we have two U members of the public um that will be providing us [5:26] with feedback tonight and the first is um Callie [5:33] Peterson I'll unmute hi everybody hello hello okay hello my name is Cali [5:40] Peterson and I am a parent of an EPS student on behalf of a group of Edina [5:45] parents I would like to thank the school board and the superintendent for the work that is being done to restrict and [5:51] enforce policy around smart devices in schools we have reviewed the minutes [5:56] from the May 21st school board work session and feel that the proposal presented is not aggressive enough for K [6:03] through 12 students we support the recommended stance for elementary and middle school students to keep personal [6:10] devices away for the day we agree that for the district's youngest Scholars [6:15] phones and devices are nothing more than a distraction in school which will affect their engagement interaction with [6:22] others and mental health for high school students the new [6:28] language that was recommended by the work group suggesting a schoolwide policy of phones being away limited or [6:36] okay will not be enough to eliminate the massive distraction that phones cause [6:42] the Temptation for students to check their phones will simply be too strong for a verbal [6:49] policy according to Common Sense Media Most teens receive up to 200 [6:54] notifications a day school is not a place for this type of distraction and it is our responsibility as adults to [7:01] protect the education and mental health of our youth phones are a clear disruptor of learning and greatly limit [7:08] face-to-face interaction among students this includes inside the classroom in [7:14] the hallways and at lunch regarding discipline for this new tiered policy in the middle and high [7:21] schools what are the consequences for not complying what lengths do teachers have to go to to enforce a consequence [7:29] how much time will be spent during a lesson asking students to put away their [7:34] phones or to report misuse of phones this burden and new policy will fall [7:41] directly on teachers who I'm sure we can all agree have enough on their plate as [7:46] a parent group a few of us had the opportunity to meet with a representative from Yonder a phone pouch [7:53] company he allowed us to borrow a sample and an unlocking device which we have [7:58] practiced using in some it's a seamless process which allows students to always [8:04] keep their devices in their possession but most importantly away and not [8:10] accessible from Bell to Bell Edina Prides itself on being a district of [8:15] Excellence our Public School District could be a Trailblazer in terms of managing technology with our students [8:22] and eliminating the negativity that comes with cell phones specifically in [8:27] schools I and I need to check this but along with 765 others have signed a petition [8:35] supporting the Restriction of cell phones from Bell to Bell to access this petition you can visit change.org and [8:43] search restrict cell phones any da public schools from graduated and then I will have a freshman and Jor who I didn't tell I'm talking tonight [10:02] because they don't want to know um but I am here to Advocate also for no cell [10:09] phones at the high school level um I want a break for my kids I want to break [10:14] for all the kids who are at the high school um I know you guys are a very well read well educated group you know [10:22] the statistics you know the facts you know we're all humans we all have phones we know how they work um we've had this [10:28] 12 year EXP experiment to see if cell phones and education are compatible and [10:34] um the overwhelming evidence is that it is negative for learning um and there's [10:40] really very little on the positive side of things um and those um effects are even worse for at risk kids um you know [10:48] my daughter's friends come over to our house all the time and sometimes I will say hey let's put our phones away for a [10:53] while and um some of them have said to me um I'm going to come over so you can take my phone away for a while uh I know [11:01] that there would be absolute resistance but as a parent I [11:07] know this is a good and right thing for our kids um the reality is you can have [11:14] the measures at the high school but kids are going to be on their phones until we [11:19] have this culture where phones are not a part of learning until we have this line that says you don't have these while you [11:27] are learning at school um that culture is not going to change and I think it's [11:32] going to just take the leadership from the top to do that um you know I've asked my kids what actually happens in [11:39] phones during school and they're like okay anytime someone's bored they're on their phone when kids go to the bathroom [11:44] they stay in the bathroom and they play video games they look on their phones when they're walking in the Halls they're playing video games at lunch [11:50] instead of talking to each other all this is reality uh I just think it needs [11:55] to be a whole group leadership thing to um kind of Piggyback in what cie said um [12:01] Edina is an exceptional School District I'm so thankful to be part of it and I want us to be leaders um I know that [12:09] these new measures are coming into place um what I would love is that my kids my [12:15] my freshman and my junior could have you know the rest of their school experience [12:22] be without cell phones um that would be my great hope that maybe even by December this year we say hey we're [12:28] going starting in January cell phones are no longer going to be a part of what we're doing um and I think it would be to [12:35] everyone's benefit and thank you for serving all of you you have a difficult [12:40] and thankless job and I truly appreciate your work and thank you for giving me a chance to speak for a few [12:46] minutes thank you Miss weenie yeah yeah that concludes our community [12:52] comments for the evening um so thank you to those and moving on to our discussion items we have two of them tonight and first is a 2024 graduation debrief um Dr [13:53] Stanley uh thanks very much chair elenberg and um board of directors [14:00] I and Principal Paul pel Paul I believe that you're here as well um we are here [14:06] to uh provide a debrief overview of the 2024 [14:12] graduation um School Board Administration received many Communications regarding uh concerns for [14:19] the 2024 um mean High School graduation and um we have been working throughout [14:25] the summer since graduation to provide um feed back Loops to Garner feedback [14:30] from families and to put a process in place um we communicated with families a [14:37] couple of weeks ago and I wanted to make certain that all board members were made [14:42] aware um I provided we provided an outline in the board packet that [14:50] provided a detailed overview of the processes that we've [14:58] taken the emails that we received for patterns um we actually uh received uh [15:05] we put out a survey we received a survey with um just over 300 responses and we [15:11] analyzed those for patterns for themes um we conducted a SWAT analysis based on [15:17] that information which I included the SWAT analysis inside of the report and [15:24] um and then there's a summary of the next steps that we are planning to take so um with that we will open it up for [15:34] board members for any questions or comments that you might have board members questions or [15:47] comments director Bergman thank you um I really appreciated the the feedback the [15:54] postgraduate feedback and event analysis that was very helpful uh to understand that um I think I'm curious as [16:01] to one of the statements that talked about was we had uh translation services that were made available at the ceremony [16:08] but unfortunately because of the inclimate weather and everyone coming into the lobby that was not really [16:14] readily available to several people um can you please uh remind us what [16:20] language Services we were providing for the guests to come in um what languages were those in what community members [16:26] were we targeting for those services yeah absolutely so what we have started [16:31] using is translation headsets we find that um our um families find them much [16:39] more uh useful in when they are using the [16:45] headsets um they feel like they can hear more there's there's not distraction and so we use the headsets and we really [16:51] Target our top two languages and so in that particular case it was for our uh [16:57] families who who speak Somali and our families who speak Spanish um again the [17:03] table was set up um in the lobby area where as you entered maruchi Arena and [17:10] um due to the inclement weather you know usually folks would stay out on The Veranda on a sunny evening until it was [17:17] time to come in for graduation and folks just came in because you'll remember it was a really bad rainstorm that evening [17:23] and they came in and that caused the table where the [17:29] company that we work with had set up just to be blocked and people just they couldn't see it and so they weren't they [17:35] did not access that got it thank you and my follow-up question is is that during the presentation especially when [17:41] principal pel was greeting everybody talking about what the agenda was how we were going to do the the comments about [17:47] what the decorum was and what the expectations were and so on so forth all of that would have been translated into [17:52] those languages for people who are using them um it would have been a live translation about what was happening [17:58] from that standpoint is that correct that is correct okay great thank you so [18:03] much director Barry hi uh so the report noted that [18:08] about five minutes before door open the U ofm staff reported that they were not [18:14] in fact be collecting tickets did we ever receive an explanation as to why [18:19] they were no longer able to do so when that was part of the plan you know Paul I know that um your [18:29] staff debriefed with maruchi did they provide any greater detail for for why my understanding was part of [18:37] it was with their staff they just determined that they weren't going to be able to do bank checks and check tickets [18:42] at the last minute yes so um in a a small debriefing and we will be [18:48] following up with um deeper debriefings uh in the near future um but initially [18:53] it was that the staff was a bit overwhelmed with the the size of the crowd in the entrance area and they um [19:00] they put as a priority to check bags rather than to um check and scan the [19:06] tickets um and so oh he froze on [19:13] us that oh there he is Paul you froze a little bit on us but basically that they [19:21] had um with the crowd that was in the lobby they were a little overwhelmed and [19:27] so they chose to put a prior priority on checking bags for graduation [19:32] felia as opposed to checking tickets at that time and again it literally was [19:38] five minutes before graduation started that we were notified about that yeah great summary that's exactly what I was [19:45] trying to communicate yeah dror [19:52] gaer yes um Dr Stanley and principal pel I want to thank you and your team [20:00] for putting this together and if anybody is watching this that um did reach out [20:06] with concerns about graduation I encourage them to read the report it's very thorough [20:11] and I just I appreciate reading the report and knowing that there's a plan in place and next steps that are really [20:18] concrete um to help us just make sure that we hit the mark next [20:24] year so I want to thank your team and all the work because I know you've put a lot of time in into um gathering this [20:30] feedback and making a plan going forward so thank [20:37] you director [20:42] Bergman I think that there's one more statement I'd also like to make is that I want to comment on because I haven't [20:48] heard it from anyone as far as who's commented on the graduation our students were a model of great behavior and of [20:56] respect and of decorum and all that and those are the people that we were there celebrating and so I just wanted to put [21:02] a shout out that our graduates actually demonstrated appropriate behavior throughout the entire ceremony um and I [21:09] think that goes a lot say says about our students um our community members our adults I think we could learn from our [21:16] students um in terms of what's appropriate behavior um but I was pleased as punch that um our staff and [21:22] the students themselves were a great model of how to behave appropriately for the ceremony that we had so I just [21:28] wanted to give that shout out thank youor uh thanks I also wanted to [21:35] reiterate thanks for the planning and um Paul for all your work you did uh two questions I had one do we have a rough [21:42] estimate of the number of attendees that were there that night and then two um when talking with the maruchi staff um I [21:50] just wanted to confirm that the people that were doing the security were all um maruchi provided staff personnel and [21:57] then um and then secondly um if there was any thought about doing or having um you [22:05] down Public Schools staff be the be part of the security or kind of crowd control part of it and if not um is that even [22:14] feasible Paul W to start with um the information about the [22:20] attendees yes thank you very much um so we were planning for roughly 6,000 um [22:26] people in attendance uh I I believe that we were short of that 6,000 Mark so we [22:32] estimate somewhere around 5,000 uh maybe a few more that actually [22:37] attended um and then as far as our plan we did have a uh a plan where we uh were [22:45] going to have staff checking or scanning the tickets um and talking with maruchi [22:51] they typically would provide that service through their their own uh Personnel from the University of [22:57] Minnesota uh so that was the plan that we went with and um when we received [23:02] notice that that had changed uh we weren't in a position to um to get more staff to do that that is a um an area of [23:10] discussion not only for the tickets but also for um supervision um and typically [23:16] we focus on the student body but um you know we are are considering um you know [23:23] using Edina uh staff to monitor um the [23:28] the audience as well so those are considerations and we'll be seeking more [23:33] input uh in the fall thank you very much we we did have um [23:41] because the initial planning really surrounded around ensuring that we were going to have safe graduation related to [23:47] our experiences with protests at the school board and we just didn't want that to happen so we did have our SRO [23:54] that were there um so we did have some security staff you know two security staff memb members again as Paul stated [24:01] as recent as the the Monday before graduation we had worked really closely [24:06] with the U ofm um security department and they assured us that you know they [24:12] really felt like they had enough of their own Security on staff to really handle [24:17] everything thank Dr thank you Dr Gaper [24:22] sorry I did have one question um I know we did tonight's conversation is about the high school exper experience I know [24:29] we received a couple of emails about other experiences throughout the district um is there a plan in place to [24:36] make sure that our communication or some of these um at at a minimum some of the conversations or communication going out [24:43] to families before these events are really clear about expectations noise makers things like that yeah and a [24:51] couple of things we did receive a couple of communications um related to graduation at one of our middle schools um [24:58] principal Vass has actually contacted and worked with those families directly um related to their concerns so they [25:04] have been communicated with and um yes we will send out Communications [25:11] and we have to figure out some next steps because similarly those Communications went out ahead of time [25:17] just like they did for the high school graduation so we have immediate feedback that's saying that's not enough [25:23] communication or it's not the communication that's working for everyone so um [25:28] he too will be working with a Cadre of individuals on his team and in the [25:34] community to make sure sure they process [25:40] voice director Burman I have one more suggestion we were not the only [25:46] graduation ceremony that experienced similar types of of disruption and um [25:52] behavior from the audience um as we're considering best steps and approaches and things like that as we're getting [25:57] more feed back um I don't know if we've already considered talking to other schools within our general geographic [26:03] area I I know Eden Prairie certainly had some challenges also at maruchi maybe there might be some best practices that [26:10] might come about with not just our own feedback but looking at other feedback from other people who experienced something [26:16] similar yeah that is a really good idea director Birdman on this side of it the planning [26:23] the figuring out what has happened things like that superintendence we have definitely been inct with one another [26:29] Paul I know that you've had a high school principal meeting you know since [26:34] graduation occurred I don't know if you had talked about that but certainly we've talked about what occurred one of [26:40] the things that we um spoke about really related to the graduations [26:45] were on Acoustics as well at the venue and um some commonalities with that was [26:51] related with concerns across superintendence was related to Acoustics and so I know that you know all of us [26:57] are going to be having those conversations and I like that idea to really do some as as we're engaging our [27:04] community how might we do some compare and contrasting with what it looks like when when um the other districts are [27:10] engaging their communities because they might have some creative ideas I like [27:16] that we did that was a topic uh monthly I meet with the late conference principles um and so we did have that as [27:23] a kind of a debriefing topic and we'll continue to talk about that going into this next year [27:28] uh about what plans are being made at all the different districts and um each district has some unique some different [27:36] nuances in terms of that event um but we are sharing all of our ideas and uh [27:43] providing everyone with with all the steps that we are taking and um and we have received a really positive feedback [27:50] about the preparation that went into uh our planning so um we did share those [27:56] those plans with the rest of the lake conferences as well well thank you Dr Stanley and [28:03] principal Patel and the rest of your team for working on this um I know that you put a lot of work [28:09] into um your debrief and what will be next steps coming up in the fall and I [28:16] appreciate it um the only question I have is I would or question I would love [28:22] for you guys um to come back and update the board once you've gotten further [28:28] along in um the focus groups you have with families I guess if there are any I [28:35] would only ask if there any um changes to update us and update the community um [28:41] so we can know um maybe early spring late winter um if there what we be going [28:48] on with graduation it would be nice so I see several board members head [28:56] shaking so I think that that's something that um the rest of the board is looking for as well and so we will um we will be [29:05] able to bring that information to the 103 uh which uh Dr beair is going to walk us [29:44] through good evening and policy 103 bringing it back there are no [29:50] substantial changes to policy 3 we were uh cleaning up language and we were [29:56] adding um min Ina statute that now supports the [30:04] policy word members are there any questions for Dr [30:15] beair okay well great then this uh policy will move forward for Action in [30:20] August thank you franie all right and then next up uh we have policy 13 13 [30:29] which is data requests and do we have um director Edwards on this evening yes yes [30:37] I'm here oh perfect hi daany hello do you want to talk to us a little bit [30:43] about policy 113 this is one of those policies that we review annually and so [30:49] board members may recall seeing this relatively recently and that's because we look at it every [30:55] year yes and thank you for the opportunity to provide some explanation [31:00] of some changes that were recommended because there's considerably more I'm recommending considerably more in the [31:06] policy than there has been historically and that really centers around managing [31:12] data requests for the district now for the past couple of years and becoming more familiar with the types of requests [31:20] that we receive I think our old policy was a general blanket policy where [31:27] whereas I'm seeing different types of requests come in and my required [31:34] response to a request is based on the type of request that's received so I [31:39] thought that it was important to spell out more of those details arguably the [31:47] recommendations cover even more than what I've seen to date so you know a [31:53] decision was made to recommend something that's very broad [32:00] comprehensive that would cover what we've seen historically what I've seen to date and what might come up in the [32:08] future rather than limiting to the policy to just what's been seen before I took the approach of having the policy [32:17] cover broadly things that could come up in terms of data [32:23] requests okay thank you board members what questions do we have for director [32:30] Edwards Cher Ellenberg I don't necessarily have a [32:36] question per se and I appreciate your approach um director Edwards I think it's the right one my um I guess my [32:45] comment is I find it very confusing and I've read through it and read through it [32:52] and read through it and read through it and I'm having a really hard time distinguishing ing between some of these [32:59] different types of data and so I guess my question [33:07] is if the if the purpose of the policy is really to protect us on the back end [33:12] when we're making data requests and so we can be sure that we have in our [33:17] policy these different definitions to help when we have data requests I'm not [33:23] as concerned if we really want to make sure the public [33:30] understands then it's really confusing and then I [33:36] would argue that maybe we need to give examples um so I would get I guess I [33:41] would ask the policy committee the intent of the policy and if for the [33:48] intent of the policy if we're okay with how confusing it is because I I honestly [33:54] I can't discern between like what is the difference between public data and public data on individuals between K and [34:00] M those read very similarly to me and so um and a lot of the different ones so [34:07] that's my biggest question concern comment is totally agree with the approach [34:14] you're taking want to make sure that it's reading well for the intent of [34:21] the policy thank you and that was a conversation that we had a little bit at [34:28] the policy committee um with director Edwards question for you chair elenberg when you look at the policy is it mostly [34:35] the definitions and not necessarily the changes towards the bottom of the policy [34:41] that talks about some of the practice to me it's mostly the definitions okay and um trying to [34:49] discern between the different definitions and the different types of [34:54] data um because they're [35:02] very oops as we're waiting for her to come [35:07] back a question oh you kind of froze up on us for a little bit there Erica [35:13] sorry it's oh sorry Dr St go ahead no that's okay that's really um helpful I [35:20] think for for dapan for sure because it it is dap's team who handles all of [35:25] these and um what I'm wondering is you know for Daphne's team and her purpose [35:32] they really they truly understand the difference between those and when when a [35:38] data request comes in how they handle that is they go through they're [35:44] understanding the difference and then they will call an individual you know who was asking for data and let them know Well I you know I'm not able to [35:51] release this because it's this information but I am able to release it because it's this and having that in the [35:58] policy um allows them to have that [36:05] information um supporting their inability to release [36:10] it so I'm I'm wondering what might be some steps for you and for rest of board [36:17] members because um um director gaer said that there was conversation about this in committee as well what are some [36:24] things is it just a matter of changing the language and making it more user [36:30] accessible or well I think given given your explanation director Edwards [36:36] explanation I'm comfortable at the language as is and I think it makes sense like I said I wanted to make sure [36:43] it's more clarifying for me and maybe other individuals what the intent of the [36:49] policy is and knowing that this added language is really a tool for [36:55] communications team I think is very important as opposed for it [37:01] being a tool for our um the community because if it was a [37:07] tool for a community then I would be really concerned and then I would suggest we really need to figure out how [37:13] to simplify it but as is since it's a tool it's more an inward tool I don't [37:19] have concerns so okay thank you for that and um [37:27] director Birdman just as a member of the policy committee and trying to get a little [37:33] clarification one more time um in order to do the the part that [37:39] dapne is looking for to where she can then point to someone when they come in with their request the language and the definition is to clarify this is the [37:46] this is the definition of what you're asking for and this is what we can and can't do with it so I heard you saying you agree with that it's not a problem [37:53] but for a tool for a Community member or someone who wants to access data requests you said something about giving [38:00] examples um the one thing I could I share with you is what is the top what [38:07] is the the type of data that is accessible through a data request and [38:12] which ones are not it the definitions doesn't categorize them in that way and [38:17] so that's where I think it gets to a little part of the the where it could be confusing to a lay person who's not [38:23] really you know involved with this to recognize okay well these are the for which I can do so what I'm wondering [38:30] don't know is whether we whether we change the policy or not I'm not so sure as necessary but in the data request [38:36] form or what's going on that are we clear about these are the types of data that you can legally gain access to from [38:43] whatever it is and so when they're checking the Box this is what I'm looking for it kind of guides them that [38:49] way I don't know if that would help kind of bridge the two things I've heard tonight requests come into a data [38:56] request inbox and so someone just they either quote [39:01] the statute that says they should have access to this data or they just make a [39:07] request and refer to it as a data request so it starts off as as broadly [39:13] as the requestor makes the request and then I pick it up from there in terms of [39:20] deciding how to respond if someone asks for something that they legally can't [39:25] have um access access to then I respond and explain that to them and explain why [39:32] most of the requests that come in I am able to respond to I might need to have [39:38] data part of the data redacted but for the most part I am able [39:43] to um reply reply to [39:48] them got it so then that tells me that what what Erica was asking about in terms of the use of this policy language [39:54] is really for our purposes that makes sense given the nature of how requests come to [39:59] us I think so and you know this really gets into a lot of fine detail you know [40:07] a lot of fine detail I think and and designed to cover and advise many many [40:13] districts and so as a result I think we end up going really wide in terms of the [40:21] definitions that are included um because of that purpose it's meant to [40:27] serve anything that could possibly come up and I think it is written to protect [40:34] the school district thank you director Birdman does [40:40] that answer your [Music] question okay great uh director man I [40:45] see your hands raised I was just gonna say um yeah like our website we have our [40:51] data request form where we have that information kind of like what we were talking about as far as having information for the public [40:57] um I guess the way I looked at the policy meaning the kind of intended [41:02] audience for that is our communication staff or kind of our Legal Eagles and um [41:09] like director Berman said having that kind of differentiation for members of the public um you know we we have some [41:15] of that information on our website under the data requests um kind of form and there's some um information on there [41:21] that I think is really helpful um if we're worried that the policy isn't [41:26] Maybe accessible enough um I don't know if that's maybe the audience for it if that makes sense I guess and we have [41:32] that online so I think we're kind of covered that way so I guess I was fine with the the policy has [41:40] written okay thank you board members are we comfortable moving this to action as [41:47] is I can't see all your faces but unless I hear descent I will assume that we're [41:53] okay with this moving forward and thank you director Edward words I know in committee you talked [41:59] about how having a couple years in this position under your belt has really helped you refine um this policy to make [42:06] sure that it is um usable for your team and also just in the best interests of [42:11] our students in our district so I appreciate your work on this you're welcome all right thank you all right [42:18] then we will move on to our next policy up for discussion this evening and that [42:24] is policy four 14 uh mandated reporting of child [42:30] neglect or physical or sexual abuse and for this we have our uh director of HR [42:38] Sonia s thank you director gayor um chair Ellenberg Dr Stanley [42:46] members of the school board so policy 414 as director gaer said um provides [42:51] our policy around mandated reporting of child neglect or physical or sexual abuse specifically for minors for um [43:00] children under the age of 18 this policy was just modified in [43:07] August of 2023 and so and at that point we actually went through quite a few [43:12] proposed changes so at this point the only um changes [43:19] being recommended by uh the policy committee are those to follow the [43:25] board's style guide one one reminder typically we keep statutory [43:32] citations um in the legal references portion at the end of a policy and um in [43:40] this case we we do have them at the end but we typically remove them from the taxt from the body the policy committee [43:47] made the decision a year ago to keep the statutory citations within this policy [43:53] and actually also within policy 415 which will come up next because when you're um sadly when you're [44:00] dealing with something like mandated reporting for child M treatment it's um [44:05] you're you're often working in quickly and it's in order to be able [44:12] to retrieve the information you need um in a really expedient way it's nice to [44:19] have those statutary citations right in the body of the document and so the [44:24] board the policy committee continues to make the recommendation to keep those citations in the policy but with um with [44:33] just those few proposed changes for the style guide um there really were no [44:39] other proposed changes at this time are there any [44:47] questions okay okay thank you well then this one will move forward for Action in August and I said this with 113 but all [44:54] of these policies most of these policies that we were reviewing tonight are annual review policies and so we're [44:59] doing it here at the beginning of the year so that we are set for the upcoming [45:05] um uh school year so all right then next up we have uh policy 415 which is [45:12] mandated reporting of Mal treatment of vulnerable adults great thank you director gayer um [45:19] also this policy also was last modified in August of 2023 and again we had a [45:25] number of proposed changes at that time so um at this time our only uh proposed [45:31] changes were a few based on our board style guide um and with that I ask if [45:38] you have any [45:43] questions okay okay that's great well thank you for this your work on this uh director sailor and next up we have 524 [45:52] which is our electronic Technologies acceptable use policy and this evening [45:57] we have uh Nathaniel Linley with us to talk us through um the changes that have [46:05] taken place in policy 524 thank you very much um 524 is our [46:13] acceptable use policy for students and employees and the only changes since [46:18] this was revised last year heavily was to add a little language um to clarify a [46:27] required new msba addition to state that the school district will establish rules [46:33] and procedures regarding student possession and use of cell phones and other electronic communication devices [46:39] in schools and to provide just a little bit more um background on that um the in the [46:47] most recent legislative session the requirement came that districts will have a policy uh related to cell phone [46:54] use um his ially the policy [47:00] 524 was really and nathani you can talk to this the aspect around a cell phone [47:07] was more related to access onto the network system and things like that can [47:12] you talk a little bit more about that yeah so previously the acceptable use policy spoke a lot about what's [47:19] appropriate use of both personal communication devices like a cell phone or a personal laptop as well as District [47:26] devices and District accounts and appropriate use around the technology [47:31] tools information uh resources and like that and so there's a lot of detail in [47:38] there covering um inappropriate use and policy around our uh District accounts and [47:45] resources this adds the element of the student cell phone and communication [47:51] device possession uh that we will be creating rules and procedures around that that to [47:57] meet the requirement this spring from the state so the bulk of the policy is [48:02] really unchanged in terms of appropriate use and consequences um and it has the [48:07] appendix of the acceptable use policy that parent Guardians and students in [48:12] employees see as well right now um the Minnesota [48:18] Association for Secondary School principles the Minnesota Elementary Association Minnesota Association for [48:25] elementary school princial um they are they they are being pulled um together [48:33] as part of this effort to really look at a template for what a possible policy [48:39] could look like we do anticipate utilizing two policies that we already have in place cross referencing them so [48:47] that that um is taken care of and right now um our new assistant superintendent [48:55] um Nate Swanson is um pulling together the team of Administrators so [49:02] that they can really map out um the the protocols and the how are we going to [49:08] live out the plan of no cell phones K8 and so they are really working together [49:14] to map that out all of that information um will be ma made available to families [49:19] before school starts and be available in our handbook as well so right now the [49:26] this policy has the requirements um based on legislation and [49:33] we will move forward with updating that as we move closer to getting that [49:39] information that policy um school boards are required to have a policy on cell [49:46] phone use not what will happen but a policy on cell phone use by March 15th [49:52] of 2025 because we were ahead of the game with it with the task force that uh we [49:59] started back in November we're just a little bit ahead of where school [50:05] districts are typically at right now are there any other [50:15] questions I'm sorry I was trying to raise my hand hit the button on [50:21] my it's crammed into a box my phone to stand up right I couldn't find my get my [50:27] hand button so sorry all right Ellenberg do you want to go and then Mr Birdman has his hand [50:33] sorry I was I was trying to press the hand button so um I don't have a question but just a comment to so I just [50:40] wanted to reiterate or re reinforce what Dr Stanley was saying which is that um [50:47] for anyone watching this that's concerned about the cell phone issue the update to this policy doesn't [50:53] necessarily the vagueness doesn't necessarily reflect the current practice and what we're working on it's an update [51:00] to this policy as a placeholder for now to make sure we're meeting requirements of the state as our what we're doing as [51:07] a district is evolving and as we get more information from um several [51:12] different associations that are working on um what these policies should look like um the community will see updated [51:20] um language in um this policy and another policy um about self usage in [51:27] the GU in public schools so I just wanted to make sure that I was reiterating um what you said Dr [51:33] Stanley thank you director Birman actually what I was gonna ask has [51:40] been covered I think the main thing is it's not just the policy but in our handbook would also reflect what these [51:46] requirements are so when we think about our students and their families they will have multiple touch points as to [51:52] when we eventually come to a decision as to what we're going to do moving forward it will come in those methods so I just [51:57] want to reinforce that thank you yep and in addition to that one thing um our policy 506 which goes [52:06] pretty closely in alignment with our student handbook will also be one of those policies that we may as a board as [52:13] both the state working groups and our internal working groups work through what our cell phone approach is going to [52:20] be in din Public Schools 524 and 506 are probably the two that might come back to [52:26] us um even though they are both policies that we review annually um they might [52:32] come up before next June depending on what we hear from any of those [52:39] groups other questions from the board great questions by the [52:46] way okay thank you then Nathaniel this will come forward to us um for Action in [52:52] August I appreciate your work on this thank you all right and then we have um policy 806 [53:03] Emergency Management and Dr Stanley are you taking the lead on this one okay yes [53:10] so um thank you policy 806 is a policy that we are required to bring forward um [53:18] for review every year um you remember last year um former director Natasha mon [53:26] daily as part of our work around Safety and Security completely revamped this policy [53:33] and added some details related to our the protocols that we use around I love you guys and things like that therefore [53:41] there weren't significant changes in there one of the areas that we have changed is related to active shooter [53:47] drills we do not conduct active shooter drills within our district and um it [53:54] just made sense that we remov Mo any information related to that because it [53:59] being in the policy may lead community members to um infer that we do conduct [54:07] active shooter drills we did take um um that idea to our legal team to make [54:16] certain that we just weren't missing anything and in speaking with Trevor um he said we absolutely do not need to [54:23] have that in the policy and so you will see that anything related to active shooter drills is um struck out so [54:29] that's why that's in there you'll see that there are some ancillary changes around wording that um relates to our [54:36] style guide and some changes last year for instance last year we were working [54:43] to develop protocols and now those protocols have been developed and so now we're moving to continually monitor [54:49] those protocols to make sure uh that they are effective around Safety and Security in your District [54:59] board members are there any questions for Dr [55:05] Stanley Cher allenberg it's me again the policy nut um I I don't know if it's a [55:14] question or a comment I'll just say it um in the last section under [55:20] Communications Section 8 um we state that um District administration will [55:26] Implement and monitor the following communication procedures and then the first bullet [55:32] says uniform warning system that notify staff and students of a crisis situation examples include PA system email strobes [55:39] and phone notification and I guess I just wanted to point out [55:46] the um that were talking about not utilizing phones [55:53] k through eight on the one hand on the other hand we have a policy that says be notifying May or examples May notify [56:01] students of a crisis situation with a phone notification and because it says [56:08] examples I'm comfortable leaving it in there for now but I think at some point [56:14] the board and or the community we have to have a conversation about the conflict [56:20] between the safety notification utilization of phones and the urge and [56:26] interest in restricting all phone usage at especially the secondary level [56:32] because those two things are in direct conflict to each other and we have to make sure that we are [56:40] meeting all these different needs and I don't know what the answer is but I want to make sure that we're not promising [56:46] something from an emergency management perspective that we can't execute on because of a cell phone policy that we are putting in place and like I said I [56:53] don't necessarily need a want to change tonight because we like I said we see [56:59] examples but that is something that with all these different moving parts we have to have our eye on the ball on [57:06] that I um definitely appreciate that and um I think for sure there you know we [57:14] could move as we look further into that into providing some clarity for instance we use um really those that's about rooc [57:22] calls right when when we're notifying our families not necessarily the kiddo with their cell phones but um you have a [57:29] very valid point quite honestly when we went through the I love you guys training um recently as a broad [57:35] districtwide um leadership team with 50 something of us in the room we also had [57:41] the chief of police um um Chief Milbourne and we also had chief of fire [57:47] chief SL as well as several lieutenants and sergeants um co- attended uh that [57:53] training and one of the things that the I love you guys trainer specifically [57:58] stated is that very fact that you're putting on the table Erica the the tensions that come up with in the event [58:06] that there is a situation where we really need to um communicate with our kids that um most of the time it is with [58:14] cell phones and so that is a tension that we are going to have to navigate um [58:21] within the community and um I'm really excited [58:27] in that our new assistant superintendent just led the process in the district [58:32] that he came from in um um saying that there is there was no [58:38] cell phone use um within the grade structures that we're talking about right now that we have that so um I'm [58:46] happy that we're going to be able to lean on his expertise with that and we'll be able to continue to work with I [58:51] love you guys as well chair Ellenberg does that [58:59] satisfy okay great thank you for that uh director [59:05] hovie um so when I read that um I think of [59:13] somebody who may be in an office who has a phone or I do know in the past uh [59:19] classrooms headphones I don't know if that's still the case or if that is the case in Idina and as I read that that's [59:26] what I was thinking because it doesn't say mobile phone it just says phone so I [59:32] was going toward some sort of call that might go out to desk phones or classroom [59:38] phones to notify um staff and students [59:44] there may be a situation where you're not using a PA or something like that so that just a perspective that I had on [59:53] it thank you board other board members that may have [59:58] questions on policy 806 um Dr Stanley I did have one [1:00:05] question up in section um where am I here I think it's [1:00:11] in section six under uh C where there's been some [1:00:18] language that's been changed about and it says each School site will have at least two employees a Health Service [1:00:24] assistant and licensed school nurse certified in CPR in a medical emergency [1:00:30] situation The District Health Service supervisor will establish a care team to respond to a situation when I read that [1:00:37] it seems like there's an emergency happening in a building and it'll be the district help supervisor who then gets [1:00:45] called and says who's going to respond to the situation but I'm assuming that it it's [1:00:52] really ahead of time the District Health Serv supervisor is saying hey in the [1:00:57] case of an emergency at Southview Middle School this is the care team that will be responding to the situation is that [1:01:03] how I should be reading that yeah in a real live typical day situation what is [1:01:10] going to happen is that um LSN the the folks who are designated will um [1:01:17] actually be the ones to respond 99.9% of the time that happens and there may be a time when um one of the those [1:01:24] individuals are actually actually um out of the building they may be on vacation or something like that and the health [1:01:32] services supervisor then coordinates that to make sure that that building has [1:01:37] that care team support that they need so they may say you know it's something at self viiew and um there was a person [1:01:44] that wasn't there they may call over to conquer and say hey I need you to go over and help self view with this [1:01:51] particular situation okay that's helpful clarification and I assumed as such that [1:01:56] we were plan those plans are in place and as I was reading it it was like oh this sounds like it's happening in the [1:02:02] moment but it should be read as a proactive statement okay league once [1:03:07] again uh interesting little fact of over 600 uh member high schools are part of [1:03:13] the high school league and around 80% of those schools have enrollment of less [1:03:19] than 500 students so um we are um a rarity I guess in terms of the size and [1:03:26] scope and uh certainly proud to uh uh be a part of it and also um proud to uh be [1:03:33] uh super successful in our membership within the high school league as well so open to any questions uh that you may [1:03:40] have in regards to the video that I believe you had a chance to watch beforehand as [1:03:46] appreciate your time thank you um dri a motion to approve the [1:04:26] cyber security agreement with arctic wolf [1:04:32] so second and we have director of media and Technology Services Nathaniel Lindley [1:04:40] here again I believe yes good evening thank you chair [1:04:45] allenberg board so this uh is our annual cyber [1:04:51] security renewal with the company arctic wolf uh um historically we started [1:04:57] conversations with the company in the fall of 2022 and we went into full [1:05:02] implementation in June of 2023 so this completes our first year using them as a [1:05:08] security um as a service contractor and our renewal is part of [1:05:15] the um Consortium that we're a member of West Metro schools including schools [1:05:21] like Bloomington and Richfield and some others and then we work with [1:05:26] that Consortium and CDW and are purchasing agreements to negotiate the [1:05:32] best pricing on the security service provider that arctic wolf is and so [1:05:38] we're proposing or would like to renew that service with them for the fiscal year of [1:05:44] 2025 uh 24 25 year and um that's what's [1:05:49] in your packet and the information there thank you director Lindley do [1:05:55] board members have questions or comments about um this action [1:06:01] item okay oh Bergman oh sorry thank you um thank you for the [1:06:10] information on the contract uh I know that as a the staff member who's gone through the Artic wolf training so so [1:06:16] forth I'm just curious as to how well have we seen our participation with the program um and are we on track as far as [1:06:25] Pro trory or trajectory towards where we want to be going with that that we found it to be success why I know it's a [1:06:30] cultural thing that we have to be able to have a cultural of Safety and Security and it starts with all of us [1:06:36] humans um and it doesn't happen overnight so it's going to take a little bit of time for us to do that but can you provide any sort of input as to the [1:06:42] success or the valuation of their program and how we're doing with that up to this point even though it's only been [1:06:48] a year yeah so that's a good question one of the offerings that arctic wolf has is called manage security aware aess [1:06:56] and the awareness piece is really what you're talking about is the training that all staff who have an email account [1:07:01] receive so whether you are a part-time kids club uh supporter or a full-time [1:07:08] director you have the same training um that consists of both fishing [1:07:14] simulations which are sample fishing emails that you if you click on and um [1:07:21] inadvertently open or do you get some training on why why were you tricked or why did that happen and and it also [1:07:27] includes uh informational videos that just tell you more about um cyber [1:07:32] security scams and challenges so it's both informational and uh instructional [1:07:38] in that sense right now our security score if you um summarize it with them [1:07:44] is about a 75 out of 100 which is categorized as strong we saw a good [1:07:49] Improvement in terms of participation and uh success during the middle and spring of the year and then it started [1:07:55] to decline towards the end of the year and in terms of our staff participating in it and that gives us an idea of the E [1:08:03] and flows of people being engaged with the training um and responding to it so [1:08:10] uh that is going to be consistent through this next year this managed awareness training will continue for all [1:08:16] staff uh it's about once a month there's a three minute video as well as a fishing simulation once a month so what [1:08:23] I've seen anecdotally is that many of the staff who are participating in that are starting to [1:08:29] recognize especially fishing emails and scams that are risk that get through our [1:08:34] filters um and they're starting to question it and either self-report or [1:08:40] let one of my team know hey I got this and then we can dig in to find out how big it is a problem so that's one of the [1:08:46] Arctic W features that is provided great I mean one other comment [1:08:52] I'd make is that I know that sometimes you you get these as an email and you got a lot of emails but at the time the email comes in to do the three minute [1:08:59] video and process whatever is it's not always appr propo at that moment to do it it's kind of hard to sometimes [1:09:05] remember where where you're at and that kind of thing can you do you know of any dashboard or any sort of thing from a [1:09:10] user standpoint so we can see how well we're doing in terms of staying on track for that participation yeah that's a [1:09:16] feature request that I put in because of that reason where staff forget it and it [1:09:22] it falls down and then they'll get a reminder email saying hey you've missed these two or three trainings I'm [1:09:27] guessing some of you have seen them I have and you have to go to the end and click finish um so there's not a [1:09:34] personal dashboard there's just an admin dashboard that gives me an idea of who's completed it um and who hasn't in a [1:09:41] general sense so that's a feature request that you know I'd like to see but it's not available at this time um [1:09:48] one of the Forward Thinking things I want to do is get myself or a staff member in front of each School staff a [1:09:55] few times a year to be physically there with them and to answer questions stress [1:10:01] the importance of diligence and um awareness and be you know in person in [1:10:06] front of staff at buildings uh in that way to help bring awareness to [1:10:12] it thank you uh director [1:10:17] gaer thank you director Lynley for uh this presentation and I as a user of [1:10:23] Artic weol I've been pretty impressed um with the user experience in terms of you [1:10:29] know at my place of employment we don't have something like this so it is has been really interesting to see how Ed [1:10:34] Public Schools is approaching this um oh there's a thumbs up um so my questions [1:10:42] we've been with arctic W for a year now um and obviously cyber security is a big topic [1:10:51] that lots of organizations are talking about have we seen even though we've only been with them for a year have we [1:10:56] seen much of an increase in their costs over this past year yeah so uh in our [1:11:03] first year with them um it was a it was a annual cost of about 223,000 224 the [1:11:11] original renewal cost was a 15 133% increase um but I was able to work with [1:11:18] the vendor to eliminate a few items that we um did not utilize during that year [1:11:25] so part of the strategy that director Monas DA used was in this first year let's put more features in to find out [1:11:32] what we utilize and what we don't so we were able to um strike out one light item to keep that renewal cost about the [1:11:39] same and actually a little bit less okay so the Arctic Wolf subscription year-to [1:11:45] year is about the same but the increase from the fiscal year 23 was that large $220 some thousand so [1:11:55] so that 23 to 24 was a big jump 24 to 25 is um we're trying to maintain the best [1:12:02] we can um on top of other cyber security costs that we already had prior to [1:12:07] working with arctic wolf okay that kind of gets into my my second question I [1:12:12] think you may have just answered it there that's helpful and um you know just for anybody that is watching this [1:12:19] and that might be working in the district arctic wolf is both the forward- facing things that you've heard [1:12:24] director Birman I talk about but there's a lot of behind the scenes cyber security yeah that like a user wouldn't [1:12:30] see but someone in your office is very familiar with so it's not that price tag that you just threw out is not just for [1:12:35] those umy videos that we get to watch uh no it's sort of the tip of the iceberg [1:12:42] um so that's the front facing uh all the stuff in the background is what my team deals with and uh we meet uh monthly [1:12:50] with our coner team at arctic wolf to review our security posture and our [1:12:55] projects that they help guide us through um and they also alert us of suspicious [1:13:01] Behavior or other things so there's a great deal of both hardware and software [1:13:07] and people on the Arctic Wolf t team that are monitoring all of our data systems or the ones that we can have [1:13:14] access to so whether it's the network or servers or the computers that are on [1:13:19] your lap um that's a big part of that arctic wolf service perfect okay and I [1:13:26] think my last question and you kind of touched on this um you know cyber security is an increasing threat for all [1:13:32] sorts of organizations and it evolves quickly and so um you know as this board [1:13:38] has had to Grapple with budget decisions in the last year you know as we look backwards and you touched on it a little [1:13:45] bit we've we've added arctic wolf to our suite of protection a year ago and [1:13:50] certainly our cyber security costs I'm assuming is it safe to say that that's [1:13:56] an ongoing cost that we're going to continue to have to keep an eye on and be aware of in terms of um how to [1:14:03] protect the district and that's a that's a big cost yes so it's it's both paying [1:14:11] for the service that they provide as well as being aware of our cyber Insurance uh costs and coverage um and [1:14:18] other tools increasing in cost so we've had some tools where the license has [1:14:24] increased 15 % sometimes the license annually has quadrupled so uh we're not [1:14:30] in control of what vendors are charging us so often we have to look for Alternatives uh that might provide the [1:14:36] same service um and I'm not specifically speaking about arctic wolf but the Myriad of software Services we pay for [1:14:44] to help protect the data and to monitor our systems for the district okay so yes [1:14:51] all right thank you for clarifying that Dr [1:14:56] uh just a real quick question is there a course this might be for mert I don't know if Mer's on the line or not but um [1:15:02] is this more or is there any kind of credit for having this type of service in our cyber insurance policies that we [1:15:09] get back for having it in place yeah I can't speak to the exact dollar amount but um we would have a much higher [1:15:17] premium without some of the strategies regulations rules and restrictions we [1:15:22] have in place and by working with arctic wolf we are trying to lower our premium [1:15:28] costs um but Mt might be able to speak more to that but it definitely plays a part and before Mt adds that can it [1:15:35] would it be correct to say Nathaniel that there are some requirements that we have to have in order to even move [1:15:43] forward with an insurance policy yes and that is very specific and has gotten [1:15:49] more detailed and specific over time and less General so things that we're doing with [1:15:55] all staff with in regards to MFA and putting Services behind Microsoft or [1:16:01] behind the new class link launch pad that is coming are strategies we use to help reduce the attack surface and the [1:16:09] um potential exposure and for general public MFA is related to multiactor [1:16:16] authentication thank you director Lindley did a great job of [1:16:22] providing some of the background details about the um actual protocols that we're going through to um obtain the best [1:16:29] quality insurance and pricing in terms of the actual pricing itself I can report that our premium is actually [1:16:34] decreasing by about $3,000 um from fiscal year 24 to fiscal year 25 um due in part to the the [1:16:40] posture that we have taken as a district as well as the I guess the proliferation of firms that are providing Security in [1:16:46] the marketplace is driving the price down in the shortterm thank you [1:16:55] anything else from board [Music] members okay um thank man hi I vote of seven to zero [1:17:24] the cyber security agreement with arctic wolf is approved um do have a motion to approve the long-term facilities [1:17:30] maintenance 10-year plan fiscal years 20126 to 2035 so move second director [1:17:40] wter good evening chair allenberg members of the school board Dr Stanley um tonight marks I believe the fourth [1:17:46] formal board discussion regarding the district's renewal of its 10-year long-term facilities maintenance plan uh [1:17:52] due to the extensive coverage of this topic at board meetings as well as at finance and Facilities committee meetings I will forego a review of the [1:17:58] previously presented items um tonight's agenda item and recommended action are to approve a resolution that will adopt [1:18:05] the district's updated 10-year plan and authorize the Department of Education to add the long-term facilities maintenance [1:18:11] Revenue to the district's upcoming 2025 property tax levy which will fund a portion of the fiscal year 2026 [1:18:19] operations the total amount of the levies is anticipated to be about $ 20, 87,000 [1:18:25] of which 9,620 th000 is part of the ongoing pay as you go Levy Authority [1:18:31] with the remaining 11,1 187,000 or so pertaining to principal and interest payments on previously bonded facilities [1:18:38] maintenance debt final figures will be included in the um preliminary property tax levy that will be presented in [1:18:45] September at the regular school board meeting um one thing to keep in mind is that the district has been utilizing [1:18:50] facilities maintenance bonded debt on an every other year basis and we do anticip issuing some sort of debt this school [1:18:57] year uh more information regarding that and an official intent resolution will be presented at the September meeting [1:19:04] for your consideration and action uh that brings me to the end of my remarks uh the recommended action is before you [1:19:11] director Woodard for anyone watching that might not be familiar with these terms could you give a very brief [1:19:16] overview of what long-term facilities maintenance is and maybe an example of a [1:19:24] few items that would be contained in it absolutely so long-term facilities maintenance refers to items that the [1:19:31] district already has as part of its building portfolio so um boilers within our schools our roofing systems um brick [1:19:39] work on the outside of the buildings things that already exist that degrade over time that we need to maintain um [1:19:44] all of those items which are ongoing we have um millions and millions of dollars of deferred maintenance each year those [1:19:50] items are eligible to go under long-term facilities maintenance um all School District in the state with the exception [1:19:56] of 28 are capped at $380 per pupil Udo Public Schools is grandfathered and [1:20:01] under the Old Law which was sunset in 2015 so we are uncapped and so we're able to do um a lot of extra work on our [1:20:08] buildings at a more accelerated rate which is a great benefit um items that um are not eligible are items that are [1:20:16] new so anything that didn't exist before um obviously cannot be repaired because it didn't exist before so you can't put [1:20:21] it into place and then repair it with ltfm Vue also things that um are not a [1:20:27] fixed to the building such as computer systems Vehicles desks chairs Etc are also not eligible to be um repaired or [1:20:33] replaced with ltfm Revenue thank you director Woodard um board members do you hopefully you had a chance to read over that new [1:21:53] purpose statement it's been modified based on the feedback from last month's meeting um and if there's no if [1:22:00] everybody's okay with that then that can move forward for Action this evening do board members have questions [1:22:07] or comments I I shockingly don't [1:22:13] so okay hearing no comments um we'll move forward with a action items we are going to move on to board [1:22:46] leadership and committee updates do we have any committee updates no um for board leadership [1:22:54] updates um we completed um our annual review of Dr Stanley and I'm going to [1:23:00] provide a um short overview of um our review um Dr Stanley [1:23:06] displays many strengths that the board feel sorry I'm gonna start over um it's [1:23:13] 3:30 in the morning in where I am so I will start over um Dr Stanley displays [1:23:18] many strengths and the board feels that she has met or exceeded each of her goals for the 2023 [1:23:24] 2024 year Dr Stanley carries a deep knowledge of the public education space [1:23:30] a strong vision for the future of the district and one that serves both her and the district well Stacy demonstrates [1:23:37] a real passion for making sure each and every student has the best possible Ed experience Dr Stanley does a great job [1:23:44] driving consensus between District leadership and teachers staff and students by engaging all levels and [1:23:50] ensuring alignment into to the Strategic plan she connects well with all levels and believes in the vision mission and [1:23:57] values of the district Dr Stanley and the board continue to grow in their work together this will be an ongoing effort [1:24:02] includes but is not limited to finding ways to incorporate educator voice in our processes and further refining the [1:24:10] time and process of board superintendent work um that is a um short summary of [1:24:15] our evaluation um in General on behalf of the board um thank you for an outstanding year leading our district [1:24:23] and I know we all really appreciate your leadership and what you're doing for Dina Public Schools so who itos to you [1:24:30] Dr Stanley um an outstanding leader for our district thank you chair [1:24:37] elenberg and that concludes the leadership updates from the board Dr Stanley do you have any superintendent [1:24:44] updates I just have a couple of um email that came in um that I'd like to um read [1:24:53] for you and um to the public um this first one went to um director jod [1:25:00] remsing and it says I want to let you know that I would love to serve on the seat committee next year representing [1:25:07] transitions but I also want to take the opportunity to thank you for the leadership of support services in Dina [1:25:15] I'm just so amazed and excited about the many things you have accomplished in such a short time approval and [1:25:21] implementation of project search the grant for par writing in the huge extension of the unified concept and [1:25:27] programming steps towards the development of the dino transition program just to name a few your [1:25:34] creativity insights enthusiasm and quote unquote can do approach have created the [1:25:40] momentum to achieve the district's Mission and you and Carrie Carrie Carol [1:25:46] is the president um have invigorated seek have a great summer [1:25:55] yay to Jody and then this last one came in just after the school year um ended [1:26:04] and I wanted to um uh read it out as well hello uh this comes from Matthew [1:26:10] Gabon who is a a teacher a teacher and a parent in our district hello I am [1:26:15] hopeful your school year comes to a fantastic close I have a number of hats I wear in the district cp45 teacher at [1:26:21] Highland e dinina Hornets girls head girls Cross Country Coach Edina Hornet's [1:26:28] head boys track and field coach and most importantly a parent of students in sixth fourth and first grade in edana [1:26:35] public schools I am writing to let you know that the leadership I experience in my roles is second to none Dr Cara [1:26:42] rickenberg inspires me to be the best self to be my best self each day she is [1:26:48] amazing with kids staff adults parents and basically everyone the culture she has created at that Highland should be [1:26:55] emulated everywhere you are very lucky as leaders of the district to have her as one of your six Elementary principles [1:27:02] I cannot emphasize this enough from a staff and a parent perspective Troy [1:27:08] Stein is a person of great integrity and character as our director of Athletics [1:27:14] and activities I imagine his job is one much like ours that never stops his [1:27:20] supportive he is suppored of of his coaches uses common sense in situations [1:27:26] that need it and makes the right decisions a majority of the time I am thankful he is our [1:27:32] leader I also appreciate the amount of time you put into your jobs he wishes Randy smle our former assistant [1:27:40] superintendent um a great next chapter um and Dr sley uh keep doing your thing [1:27:46] I love that um have a lovely summer I I really wanted to read that out because [1:27:53] Dr rickenberg is a stellar principal and um Troy I [1:28:01] mean Barun I I have shared this in the past that when I was in a different District I tried to recruit Troy and I'm [1:28:08] really glad he didn't take me up on the recruiting opportunity um and um both of [1:28:14] those two are the epitome of what excellent leadership is and they truly do Define excellence in leadership and [1:28:22] um I just wanted to highlight that because um incredibly proud of them and Jody rsey grateful for our [1:28:29] leaders as do you Dr Stanly so you all of our I think all of our leaders Define [1:28:37] Excellence so thank you to all of them very much um without anything else no hands [1:28:44] raised oh I just want to say we're talking about leadership thank you for your [1:28:51] leadership from seven hours away um in the middle of the night uh that you on [1:28:56] your vacation came to be with us and lead us through our special meeting and tonight's
