Braemar Golf Course has implemented new autonomous technology designed to improve efficiency and environmental sustainability, according to a recent presentation to the Edina City Council.

The municipal golf course has introduced autonomous mowers and electric caddies as part of what officials described as a forward-looking vision to utilize modern technology while promoting sustainability. The facility now operates a Crest brand autonomous mower nicknamed "Frank" that trims designated areas around the clubhouse 24 hours a day, seven days a week, covering approximately 2.5 to 3 acres and about 75 percent of the turf around the clubhouse.

The battery-operated equipment has generated significant labor savings, according to course officials. Staff reported saving at least eight hours per week that previously would have been spent on manual mowing, allowing those hours to be redirected to other golf course projects. The autonomous mower also reduces diesel and gas consumption, resulting in lower emissions for guests and the environment.

The course has also added eight Tempo Walk electric caddies to its fleet. The autonomous walk-behind caddies follow golfers using a transmitter worn on the player's belt, providing a solution for patrons who prefer walking but don't want to carry their clubs. Course officials said the technology addresses demand identified through year-end patron surveys.

Braemar Golf Course plans to expand its autonomous technology program in 2026 with additional autonomous mowers and an autonomous range ball picker for the driving range. The facility also intends to continue expanding battery-powered equipment, including backpack blowers, to reduce noise and carbon emissions.
