Edina Advances Train Horn Study, Gun Safety Ordinance

Published Nov 3, 2025

The city of Edina has hired SRF Consulting to conduct a $64,000 study of seven street-level railroad crossings to determine safety improvements needed before requesting federal approval for quiet zones along the CPKC rail line.

The study addresses growing complaints from residents about overnight train horns disrupting sleep as more trains began running through the city during evening hours. City officials said they must balance resident concerns with safety requirements that mandate horn sounding at crossings to prevent accidents involving motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Separately, the Edina City Council directed staff to draft a gun safety ordinance regulating assault weapons, large capacity magazines and ghost guns within city limits. Council members acknowledged the ordinance cannot be enforced without state legislative approval but said they want to send a strong message supporting such regulations.

The city also successfully hosted the inaugural Minnesota Adaptive Open golf tournament at Braemar Golf Course in September, featuring 38 amateur and professional golfers with disabilities. The tournament, organized with the Minnesota Golf Association and Courage Kenny Institute, was deemed successful enough that Braemar will host the event again next year.

Construction updates show the Vernon Avenue and Highway 100 interchange project remains on schedule for mid-November completion, though work on the Vernon Avenue railroad bridge will continue into 2026 after delays caused by an unmarked buried power line.
