Edina Schools approves new teacher contracts, facilities plan
The Edina Public Schools Board approved multiple items at its September 21 meeting, including a tentative labor agreement with health service associates and a revised long-term facilities maintenance plan that complies with new state requirements.
The board unanimously approved a tentative agreement with the Health Service Associates organization, the group representing school nurses and health aides. The deal includes a 1.5% salary increase for both year one and year two, no increase in health insurance premiums for the first year, and a 3% increase in the district's contribution to health insurance starting January 1, 2017. Workers will also gain an additional personal leave day, bringing their total from two to three days annually—aligning them with other district bargaining groups.
In other business, the board approved the district's Long-Term Facilities Maintenance Program Budget, which was revised to meet new 2015 state legislation. The plan consolidates various funding sources—including health and safety, deferred maintenance, and alternative facilities—into a single reporting system for the state. While the new format changes how the district reports its spending plans, the actual financial impact on Edina remains largely unchanged, and existing spending restrictions remain in place.
The board also approved the Long-Term Maintenance Plan for Intermediate School District 287, which provides 10-year expenditure and revenue projections. Board members noted that seeing 287's long-term financial projections in this new format is beneficial information that wasn't previously available. Edina's contribution to the intermediate district remains consistent, based on a three-year average of student enrollment.
Additionally, the board approved eight district policies in a combined motion, including updates to policies on academic standards, graduation requirements, and video surveillance. The surveillance policy was clarified to explicitly apply to leased school district property. The board also approved a settlement agreement involving the district and an individual named Lorie Miller, bringing a previously discussed matter to resolution. The consent agenda, which covered routine items, included recognition of 45 new teachers hired for the district.
