Braemar Golf Course Adopts Autonomous Mowers and Robotic Caddies

Edina's Braemar Golf Course has implemented autonomous technology including GPS-guided electric mowers and robotic walk-behind caddies, saving approximately eight hours of labor weekly while reducing emissions at the award-winning Twin Cities facility.

Braemar Golf Course is embracing cutting-edge autonomous equipment as part of a broader push toward operational efficiency and environmental sustainability, according to a presentation featured by Edina TV.

The golf course, which has served the Twin Cities community for more than 60 years, has deployed GPS-based electric mowers that now maintain roughly two and a half to three acres of turf. Staff report the technology has freed up approximately eight hours per week in labor, allowing groundskeepers to focus on other maintenance projects across the course.

We probably saved at least 8 hours a week with staff not having to come up here," one groundskeeping staff member said. "And with that 8 hours we've saved on labor, we were able to move that out on the golf course for other projects.

The facility has also introduced a fleet of Tempo Walk units — autonomous walk-behind caddies designed to carry clubs for golfers who want to walk the course but cannot carry their own bags. Management said the decision came directly from patron feedback gathered through year-end surveys. "There's a group of people that still want to walk but just can't," a course manager explained.

Braemar officials emphasized their goal of positioning the course as an industry leader. "We try and be innovators, right? Not too many facilities in Minnesota have these at this point," management noted. "So we kind of like being on the forefront."

The autonomous technology rollout is part of a larger sustainability initiative at the course. By transitioning to battery-operated and electric equipment, Braemar aims to reduce diesel and gas consumption while improving air quality for guests. Future plans include adding more autonomous mowers, an autonomous range ball picker by 2026, and battery-powered backpack blowers to further cut noise and carbon emissions.

"Less emissions means cleaner air for guests as well as the environment," a manager said, adding that the equipment can be controlled through a smartphone app.

Environmental Sustainability and Future Equipment Expansion

A lot more battery powered equipment. We're looking at backpack blowers, you know, to save on noise and just the carbon emissions. So, yeah, we definitely have a plan to keep going on in years to come.
