Edina Fire Department showcases modern vehicle rescue equipment

The Edina City Council heard a demonstration of how the city's firefighters have upgraded their vehicle extrication tools and techniques to respond faster to crash victims. Captain Josh Link presented the training at the South Metro Public Safety Training Facility, highlighting how new battery-powered equipment has dramatically reduced response time.

Captain Josh Link, who has served with the Edina Fire Department since 2010 and now supervises shifts as a captain, walked the council through three critical extrication scenarios: extracting trapped passengers through doors, removing vehicle roofs for access, and safely lifting vehicles to rescue pinned victims.

The most significant advancement is the shift from heavy, generator-powered hydraulic systems to lightweight, battery-powered tools. The old equipment, which weighed 60 to over 100 pounds and required long, stiff hoses, took about 10 minutes to set up. Modern cordless tools, similar in design to cordless drills, are faster, more powerful, and easier to control—reducing setup time to just 60 seconds. "They've gotten way better, they're way faster, they're easier to use and they're more powerful," Link said.

Link emphasized a critical but often overlooked safety concern: the danger firefighters face working on the sides of high-speed roadways like Interstate 494. "These almost never happen in a convenient location and they all frequently happen in areas of high-speed roadway," he explained. He stressed that the public can help protect emergency responders by moving over and slowing down when they see roadside incidents.

The captain also detailed the precision required in extrication work. When removing doors, firefighters use small, controlled motions to access the door latch rather than tearing metal. When lifting vehicles, they follow a fire service principle: "lift an inch, crib an inch," meaning they add wooden supports as they raise the vehicle to prevent it from falling if equipment fails.

Link concluded with a direct appeal to drivers: "If you see an incident on the side of the road, please move over as far away as possible as you pass. We don't want to block traffic and make you late, but we also want to make sure everybody goes home safe."

[0:48] training setting and with me today I

[0:50] have Josh Link josh hey good to see you

[0:55] fire department uh and he's going to

[0:56] tell us a little bit about how we do

[0:58] this and why we do this but before we do

[1:01] that let's learn a little bit about who

[1:02] you are how long have you worked here

[1:05] what do you do that kind of thing uh

[1:07] yeah started back here in 2010 as a

[2:45] simulate uh an event where you're trying

[2:47] to get somebody out of a car right this

[2:50] is probably happening you know on the

[2:52] edge of 494 and people are driving by

[2:54] and and they're not paying attention so

[2:57] you've got that kind of dangerous uh

[2:59] happening but what happens now to to try

[3:02] to get somebody out cuz you got to work

[3:04] around a person in there normally right

[3:05] right you touched on a couple things

[3:06] that are important these almost never

[3:08] happen in a convenient location and they

[3:11] all frequently happen in areas of

[3:12] high-speed roadway and it's easy to

[3:14] think of all the dangerous things that

[3:16] firefighters do but one that doesn't

[3:17] come to mind a lot is how much time we

[3:19] spend on the side of a road where people

[3:21] are whipping by uh so today we're going

[3:23] to do three different things uh a very

[3:25] common scenario would be the car is so

[3:27] damaged that we can't get the person out

[3:29] now often times if it's that damaged

[3:31] they're also injured so we're taking

[3:33] precautions to protect them we're also

[3:35] doing this big heavy operation bernie on

[3:37] the right with the yellow helmet he's

[3:38] holding uh what has often been called

[3:40] the Jaws of Life turn those Bernie so

[3:41] people can see them from the side open

[3:43] and close we have them now on battery

[3:45] power same uh similar batteries to your

[3:47] cordless drills so they're super quick

[3:50] and easy to use and they're much lighter

[3:51] but it's the same the tip of it is the

[3:53] same as it always has been and then uh

[3:56] Pete he has a big giant cutter

[3:59] and I understand uh these are two of our

[4:01] best guys is that right uh there's

[4:03] nobody better nobody better to get these

[4:06] doors open sometimes takes a heck of a

[4:07] lot more than the 30 seconds you're

[4:09] going to see these guys do they've done

[4:11] some of the pre-work so that we could

[4:12] streamline this part of it but uh

[4:14] they're going to do the fun part right

[4:16] now go ahead Bernie let's see it

[4:36] so you spread it stick them in a little

[4:38] further spread it some more is that kind

[4:40] of the technique we like to do lots of

[4:42] small motions so we don't tear the sheet

[4:45] metal until you get to the actual hard

[4:47] striker part where the latch is and once

[4:49] you get access to that and you have a

[4:51] good purchase then you have your fun and

[4:53] you bust it okay it breaks the actual

[4:55] latch that's what we're trying to do not

[4:57] rip metal

[4:59] so the next thing we're going to do uh

[5:01] imagine a scenario where we can't use

[5:03] doors for whatever reason there's a

[5:05] million of them and we'll take the whole

[5:06] top of the car off just make it into a

[5:08] convertible okay this is the fire

[5:10] department chop top experiment okay okay

[5:14] go ahead with that one Pete now they've

[5:16] done some preliminary work here too as

[5:17] well uh two or three people that are

[5:20] really uh working well together can get

[5:22] this done in definitely under five

[5:25] minutes if it's not complicated by other

[5:27] factors and they were doing some of that

[5:29] in the background where we were having

[5:30] our initial discussion and they're

[5:32] making the final cuts right now so you

[5:34] have you know you've got not only you've

[5:36] got cars and trucks buzzing by you you

[5:38] got somebody in here who's injured but

[5:41] you've got all kinds of other hazards

[5:43] right so you lotges you can see airbags

[5:47] exactly there's airbags now there's so

[5:49] many they're in the pillars that these

[5:51] guys are cutting so their cuts are

[5:53] actually very uh calculated as to where

[5:56] they're making the cuts okay so here we

[5:58] have they're pulling it off yeah now the

[6:00] roof is off we put it out of the way

[6:02] someplace safe and now we have access to

[6:04] patients that may be trapped if we use

[6:06] our imagination that these doors aren't

[6:08] available for us to use

[6:10] so what are we going to see they're kind

[6:12] of setting up some something here next

[6:14] what are we going to see next well I

[6:15] wanted to also demonstrate one of many

[6:18] things that we can use these same tools

[6:20] for that are maybe a little less

[6:21] conventional or what maybe people don't

[6:23] think of when they think of the quote

[6:25] jaws of life okay it used to be that if

[6:27] we were going to use these tools we

[6:29] would need like a 10-minute setup time

[6:31] now we can have one of these in service

[6:33] in about 60 seconds from the time we

[6:36] arrive on scene so in this case say we

[6:38] have a scenario where somebody's pinned

[6:40] under a vehicle we need to lift that

[6:42] vehicle off of them we need to do it

[6:43] quickly and we need to do it in a way

[6:45] that we can capture our progress before

[6:48] it lands back down and then hurts the

[6:49] person okay and what you see here are

[6:51] these uh simple 4x4 pieces of wood with

[6:54] uh streamlined carrying handles on there

[6:57] that's called cribbing and what we do is

[6:59] uh we have a saying in the fire service

[7:06] lifting with the tool Pete is adding in

[7:09] wood as it goes up so that if something

[7:11] goes wrong with the tool it can't fall

[7:32] and keep working our way up if you look

[7:38] a lift there but you have to crawl under

[7:40] there and maybe drag somebody out right

[7:42] we may have to so we don't want to be

[7:44] going under there without having some

[7:46] degree of safety the best we can do
