In a creative approach to community service, Edina's police and fire departments are channeling their traditional rivalry into a charitable food drive. The friendly competition aims to stock the VEP Food Pantry with donations that will be distributed to families in need throughout the holiday season.

A police department representative explained the initiative's origins, saying the department has long supported VEP and saw the food drive as an opportunity to involve the organization while tapping into the natural competitive spirit between the two departments. "VEP has always been an organization that we've tried to help out, whenever we can," the representative said. "There's always that natural competition between firefighters and cops. And so I thought this would be the absolute perfect fit."

The competition is already generating enthusiasm. A fire department representative made a direct appeal to the community, saying: "The only way to get the good folks down at the police department to stop bragging about how many people they're going to help during this food drive is for us here at the fire station to collect more than them. Help us out."

Community members can donate non-perishable items including canned goods, pasta, rice, cereal, and boxed meals at three collection sites. The Edina Police Department at 4801 West 50th Street accepts donations any time of day in its lobby. Two fire stations also participate: Fire Station 1 at 6250 Tracy Avenue and Fire Station 2 at 4401 West 76th Street, both accepting donations during regular business hours. The drive runs through December 31st.
