Edina Fire Department Graduates First Fire Cadet
The Edina Fire Department has successfully completed its pilot Fire Cadet Program with the graduation of Nick Febs, who was officially badged as a paramedic firefighter after completing specialized training requirements.
Febs, a California firefighter with five years of EMS experience, entered the cadet program because he lacked one certification required by Edina's standards. Assistant Fire Chief Sean White said the program addresses staffing challenges by providing a pathway for experienced candidates who need additional certifications to meet department requirements.
The cadet program included a three-week academy, hands-on fire simulation exercises at the South Metro Training Facility, and integration into shift work with multiple crews. Febs transitioned from 12-hour shifts to 24-hour shifts as part of his training progression.
White said the program allows the department to focus on finding candidates with strong character and values rather than just checking certification boxes. "We can teach them the technicalities and the specifics," White said. "It's much harder to train somebody to have great morals, ethics, relationships, interaction, and public support."
The department plans to continue developing and expanding the Fire Cadet Program based on the pilot's success. White envisions the program as a long-term opportunity to grow personnel within the community and find people who share the department's values and passion for the work.
