Edina Council Approves Arts Center Lease, Advances Gun Violence Prevention Measures
The Edina City Council approved a 20-year lease agreement with Hennepin County for a new arts center and committed to drafting gun violence prevention ordinances during their meeting Tuesday evening.
The council unanimously approved leasing 15,473 square feet in the new Hennepin County Library building for approximately $204,000 annually. The arts center will occupy about 23% of the second floor when the library opens in July 2027. Mayor Hublin noted the arrangement will cost less than maintaining the current arts center while providing a modern facility.
In response to the August shooting at Annunciation Catholic School, council members agreed to pursue a three-pronged approach to gun violence prevention. The plan includes drafting ordinances on safe gun storage, creating measures to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and passing a resolution calling on the state legislature to lift local preemption on gun regulations.
"No kid should have an active shooter drill," Mayor Hublin said, referencing the council's September resolution expressing solidarity with the Annunciation community. City Attorney Dave Kendall warned that many proposed gun regulations would likely be preempted under current state law, but council members expressed willingness to challenge those restrictions.
The council also approved a new liquor license for Terres, a French restaurant opening in November where the Lynhall previously operated. Additionally, they granted municipal consent for the second phase of the I-494 corridor reconstruction project, which will focus primarily east of Interstate 35W and include work on Highway 77 bridges. The project is scheduled for construction from 2027 to 2030 with no anticipated cost to the city.
