The Edina Public Schools Board held its regular meeting September 8, addressing several key issues including a potential partnership with the city on flood risk reduction infrastructure.

The board discussed a proposed agreement with the City of Edina for a flood risk reduction project at the Conquered Playground area between the playground and South View parking lot. Ross Bitner, the city's engineering services manager, presented the proposal, which would replace the district's planned storm water management system with a more comprehensive city-led flood infrastructure project. The collaboration could save the district approximately $256,000 while providing enhanced flood protection for the area.

Board members expressed concerns about giving up control of limited district land, with Chair Karen Gabler noting that space constraints are one of the district's most limiting factors. The board requested additional information about long-term land use implications and maintenance responsibilities before making a decision.

Director of Finance and Operations Mert Woodard presented preliminary information on the district's 2026 property tax certification. While complete data from the Department of Education was not yet available, Woodard projected a levy increase of less than 5 percent, which he described as lower than recent years and respectful to taxpayers. The district's enrollment reached record highs at 8,711 students, exceeding projections.

The board also received reports on successful summer programming that served nearly 350,000 hours of student engagement across various camps and activities. Community Education Director Dr. Ann Marie Leland and Community Engagement Supervisor Dr. Cheryl Gunnness highlighted growth in participation and volunteer involvement, though noted space limitations continue to constrain program expansion.
