Edina postpones council meeting for Night to Unite
The Edina City Council postponed its Aug. 5 meeting to Aug. 6 to accommodate Night to Unite, a community crime prevention event, Mayor Jim Hublin announced Tuesday.
Nearly 100 neighborhoods registered for the annual event, which brings together residents with police officers, firefighters, paramedics and city council members. The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. across the city.
Night to Unite serves as both a community-building exercise and crime prevention initiative, according to Hublin. Edina police, fire and public works departments participate in the neighborhood gatherings designed to strengthen relationships between first responders and residents.
The event also functions as a donation drive for Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People, a local organization. Last year, residents contributed 519 pounds of food and 520 school supplies during Night to Unite. Police officer reserves will collect donations at registered parties, with organizers asked to drop off items at the Edina Police Department if reserves cannot reach their location.
Hublin said he plans to visit seven or eight neighborhood parties alongside the police chief during the evening. The mayor highlighted the city's ongoing support for recognized neighborhood associations, citing recent events at Weber Park, Chowan Park and Strahour Park as examples of city-supported community gatherings.
