Highway 100 Bridge Opens Mid-November Despite Rail Bridge Delays
The Highway 100 bridge and on/off ramps at Vernon Avenue will reopen in mid-November as scheduled, but the Vernon Avenue bridge over CPKC rail will not be completed until mid-summer 2026 due to power line relocation delays, officials announced during the Oct. 16 bi-weekly project update.
Ames Construction will continue work through fall weather permitting, then demobilize equipment for winter and resume operations in April. The contractor had explored acceleration options ranging from $500,000 to $2.3 million, but city and county officials determined the costs would only provide six weeks of temporary access in February and March.
The Vernon Avenue and Highway 100 interchange project aims to improve safety and mobility while creating separated pedestrian routes and consolidating Highway 100 access points. Current work includes asphalt paving scheduled for next week, installation of noise wall planks on the northbound Highway 100 on-ramp, and completion of concrete curb work along the ramps and Vernon Avenue.
Gus Young Lane will reopen with a temporary traffic signal by late November or early December, allowing access to the Grandview parking ramp and Vernon shops area businesses. The lane will remain open through winter until construction equipment returns in April.
The project will add 13 trees in center medians on both sides of the Highway 100 bridge, with 10 trees planned for the Vernon Avenue side and three for the 50th Street side. Officials continue to track potential cost overruns related to the power line delays.
