[0:06] My biggest service is with the Tonka [0:08] neighbors initiative and a Tonka [0:10] resource night as translators helping [0:13] families. [0:13] >> I volunteer here at the Carver Senior [0:15] Living. I play dinner music. [0:17] >> I just play piano nicely and I practice [0:21] hard so I can make the best experience [0:24] for them. [0:25] >> I volunteer mainly through Special [0:27] Olympics. I'm volunteering about taking [0:29] care of my dog, Mocha. We're fostering [0:31] her. [0:32] >> I make blankets for kids moving into [0:34] sustainable housing for an organization [0:37] called My Very Own Bed. [0:39] >> I volunteer at Deep Haven Woods. I am [0:43] the candy man. When somebody gets a [0:45] bingo, I have to deliver two pieces of [0:48] candy. [0:48] >> Every year, we celebrate the service our [0:50] students perform in our communities. And [0:52] there's a huge variety. I come from a [0:54] family of immigrants, so I know how hard [0:56] it is to not speak the main language. [1:00] And having support and having people who [1:03] understand you, it builds connections in [1:05] the community. Our work allows students [1:07] and families who are multilingual in our [1:10] community to access and receive [1:12] resources that they would otherwise be [1:14] unable to do. [1:15] >> It just makes the community a better [1:17] place overall, no matter like how small [1:19] or big. [1:20] >> It's so they can get out of wherever [1:22] they're staying. for example, the humane [1:24] society, getting them out of those [1:26] kennels and for them to be able to play [1:28] and live in like a house. [1:30] >> I like making things with my hands. I'm [1:32] making them happy and I get to spend [1:34] time with my mom and sister because they [1:37] also volunteer with me. [1:38] >> Through service learning, they recognize [1:40] the value of volunteering. [1:42] >> I volunteer at Special Olympics because [1:44] they have a mission of making sure that [1:46] athletes with all abilities are be able [1:47] to participate, which is good to help [1:50] out people. It's also fun at the same [1:52] time. [1:52] >> Serving the greater good is a large [1:54] piece of our culture. They carry this [1:56] into their adult lives. [1:57] >> I really wanted to find a way to [1:59] translate my piano skills into maybe [2:01] doing something for the community. And I [2:03] found this to be something I'm very [2:06] passionate about. [2:07] >> Some people start to sing along. [2:10] >> It's really great to be able to use my [2:12] skills and help people. and just being [2:14] able to connect with someone through [2:16] their language where they have otherwise [2:19] been unable to do that up until now. [2:21] >> Somebody might adopt her. She's been [2:23] really fun to work with all her tricks [2:26] that we've done with her. [2:28] >> Volunteering really helps you grow as a [2:31] person, too, to be able to build up [2:32] other people. [2:38] Heat. Heat.
