5-2 Approved

Dissent: Valentina Ays and Paris Bendy voted 'no' against the motion to extend an offer to Dr. Rob Virgin.

Moved by Sheila Prior [0:59:04] · Seconded by Heidi Kater [0:59:07]

The board engaged in a detailed discussion of the three finalists, Dr. Rob Virgin, Dr. Renie Briggs, and Superintendent McIntyre. Members shared observed strengths, including leadership styles, experience, and vision for the district. Extensive reference check summaries were provided. Deliberations focused on balancing candidates' prior superintendent experience with perceived innovative potential and a 'hunger for the role.' The critical context of an upcoming referendum and new school construction projects influenced some board members' preference for candidates with direct, extensive superintendent experience. After initial leanings were shared and further discussion was held, the board voted on the recommendation to offer the position to Dr. Rob Virgin, acknowledging the difficulty of the decision due to the high quality of all candidates.

Um so the strength I noticed was um the strong transition plan uh with very clear actions deliverables uh he saw himself in the role of YZA superintendent and thought through what would what it would take to take transition from Dr. Anderson.

Um I one thing I appreciated about um Corey McIntyre was um him communicating his relationships with lawmakers, other educators and how they could benefit our community. his seven years experience um as a superintendent stood out to me.

I feel like we are looking at two very strong candidates in my personal opinion of Rob Virgin and Corey McIntyre and they both bring different strengths and different wonderments to the table and I think we have to decide as a board what direction we are really looking to move forward.

Um at this point in time I am leaning towards Corey McIntyre uh for his superintendent experience and I understand prior experience uh is not the only criteria. Sometimes, you know, you have to look at the future capabilities and I think um Rob is really great. I think he can do it. But when I look at where we are as a district and the initiatives or tasks that we have to accomplish this year, I feel we need somebody who is aware and in the system.

I'd like to, you know, sort of respectfully push back on the idea that okay, it needs to be someone who's been, you know, tried and tested in the past. I think when we find that someone's making a a vertical move, there's that there's that need they have to to prove themsel versus a lateral move where it's I'm accustomed to this and perhaps the expectation situation the way they would prove themselves would be different.

I think even within himself he has a lot of wisdom. I don't I don't know. Yes, he's moved up quickly and he doesn't have the experience, but I don't know that that's necessary um for a person to be able to make good decisions and be a good leader.

Heidi Kater [0:46:04]

I am not very feeling comfortable with a phrase trust the experts because I heard plenty evidence and examples in several years when we were trusting experts it did not come true but Corey what I liked about it when we talk about education.

I just wanted to point you to the colored sheet if that's going to be helpful for anybody. That is the leadership profile at the top. Sometimes it does help folks to reread that point by point and just in your head think of which perhaps of these two are stronger for any of those seven bullet points in the leadership profile.
