Wayzata Public Schools Overhauls Secondary Math, Integrating Statistics and Data Science
The district is restructuring its middle and high school math sequence to offer more flexibility and align with new state standards by incorporating statistics and data science into term-long courses.
Wayzata Public Schools is significantly restructuring its secondary mathematics curriculum, a move that will integrate statistics and data science more prominently into student learning paths. The changes, discussed at a Board of Education work session on Monday, April 27, 2026, aim to align with the 2022 Minnesota State Math Standards while offering students increased flexibility and choice in their advanced studies.
The comprehensive update for secondary math will transition from longer, traditional courses to a series of term-long modules, enabling earlier exposure to statistics and data science concepts. This strategic shift is designed to break down complex topics into more manageable units and provide students with a broader range of mathematical experiences before graduation.
For elementary level, obviously we are going to a new math program... the bigger shift is with middle school and high school, where we are trying to break the longer curriculum into smaller pieces, integrate statistics early, and it provides more flexibility.
This integration is a direct response to the evolving demands of the state's educational framework and the increasing importance of data literacy in today's world. By embedding statistics and data science early, Wayzata aims to equip students with critical analytical skills that extend beyond traditional algebra and geometry.
Abby Brar, Director of Teaching and Learning, who led the presentation on mathematics curriculum, emphasized the district’s commitment to student empowerment within the new structure.
Our goal is that we build in that choice and agency for students, that it's truly a student choice in the third and fourth year of math.
