I I remember high school [2:02] graduation and what I did and all of a [2:05] sudden I'm I'm in my 50s. So [2:07] >> it went by way too fast. [2:08] >> Went by way too fast. So [2:09] >> your child is teenager. [2:13] You know what I'm saying? So, getting [2:15] taller and and it's just a blessing to [2:17] be able to uh wake up and just, you [2:19] know, start the day. You know what I [2:20] mean? [2:21] >> Absolutely. [2:22] >> It's always important to me, y'all, to [2:23] make sure that that I um tell you my my [2:25] gratitude. And just let me back up a [2:27] little bit. Minneapolis, you know, I [2:28] have been blessed and had the privilege [2:30] to uh host this show for eight years. I [2:33] came to the city of Minneapolis in 200 [2:36] 17 and had no radio experience. And then [2:39] all of a sudden, they say, "Y'all have [2:41] to do a show, right?" And I'm like, I [2:43] love to run my mouth. Like, [2:46] >> let's go ahead and [laughter] do that. [2:47] And and all of a sudden, I'm sitting [2:49] here eight years later showing a lot of [2:51] gratitude for the uh people at KOJ. Um [2:54] it's been a it's been a blessing. And [2:56] I'm not leaving the city. I'm just [2:58] moving into a different role. But I just [3:00] want to say to y'all um throughout this [3:03] whole entire process, it has been my [3:05] favorite thing to be able to do to talk [3:07] to the people of of the city of [3:09] Minneapolis. And you know, KOJ expands [3:12] their reach far and wide, right? So, [3:14] it's not just Minneapolis, but it's it's [3:16] everywhere. And to be a part of this [3:17] leg, this legacy [3:19] >> uh foundational radio station is [3:21] important. And I'm just hoping that I [3:23] have been able to give some information, [3:26] you know, uh to help people, you know, [3:28] better understand their community and [3:30] and resources for their family. I've [3:32] hope that I've had, you know, made [3:34] people smile at times and laugh and and [3:36] do all those things. But it's it's been [3:38] truly an an honor. [3:39] >> An honor. It's been an honor for me. And [3:42] you know what I love about it is that we [3:44] give away some very important [3:47] information that the community needs to [3:49] know about that sometimes, you know, [3:50] hey, we may just not know. We answer [3:52] some questions. We give them resources. [3:54] It's a very important show. [3:56] >> It's it's I thank you for that. And I I [3:58] I agree cuz like I get some of this [4:00] information and I help, you know, other [4:01] people. I help myself with some of this [4:03] stuff, too. Right. [4:04] >> Right. Now, so you guys for one, [7:04] first and foremost, she is gorgeous. I'm a little nervous but [7:32] excited at the same time. Like it's kind [7:34] of like this full circle moment. I was [7:36] thinking about like growing up and [7:38] listening to Cam OJ. Like it was a part [7:41] of our household. Like I remember I told [7:43] you before listening new edition [7:45] Alexander O'Neal and then Sunday morning [7:49] before we went to church this is what we [7:51] listen to cuz it was the gospel hour. [7:53] And actually, one of my church aunties [7:55] had a show on here, Miss Daffhne Adams, [7:57] and she did poetry and did words of [7:59] inspiration after the gospel music. So, [8:02] it just feels like this full circle [8:04] moment, you know what I mean? [8:05] >> Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. [8:08] >> And it's it's so important too that that [8:09] you say that because, you know, your [8:11] story is a lot like everybody's story in [8:13] this city. Like, absolutely. Always talk [8:15] about how much they've grown up on Koj, [8:18] you know, so it just kind of an [8:20] extension of of who KOJ is. Absolutely. [8:23] >> One of the things I too I just want to [8:24] talk to you like tell people your story [8:26] like what's your what's your background, [8:28] you know, what's your passions, you [8:30] know, like like mic drop. [8:31] >> Okay. Well, if we're going to go like [8:34] starting like my story of my background [8:36] of how I got here, um, professionally, I [8:41] actually started out working in [8:42] education. It was a fluke thing. Uh, my [8:45] aunt actually has her own charter school [8:47] in Brooklyn Center at Brooklyn Park. And [8:50] she said, I had been living in Argentina [8:52] after college and she said, Aliyah, will [8:54] you come teach Spanish for us for two [8:56] weeks because our Spanish teacher quit [8:58] and she cannot handle these kids, but I [9:00] know that you can handle them. Just come [9:01] for two weeks and teach Spanish. And I [9:04] was there, ended up being there for six [9:06] years. That two weeks evolved into six [9:09] years. And it's something I never [9:10] thought that I would ever do, but it was [9:12] so beautiful to see a collection and a [9:16] family of black American people and [9:19] there were just newly uh refugees from [9:22] Liberia coming in and hearing their [9:24] story and watching these blendings of [9:26] culture, [9:27] >> watching black parents love their [9:30] children and care about their e [9:32] education and most importantly watching [9:34] black fathers come in and um volunteer [9:38] in classrooms, make sure their kids [9:41] homework were done. I mean, it was just [9:42] a beautiful experience to see education [9:45] in a holistic way where you really had a [9:48] family in a village raising children [9:50] together that these parents trusted us [9:53] as they would trust their own family [9:55] with them. I became their auntie. There [9:57] were grandmas. We were just a beautiful [9:59] family together. And that from that [10:02] passion that eventually went on into [10:04] doing community work, volunteering with [10:07] different nonprofits around the city and [10:10] making sure especially bringing in black [10:12] women into leadership into nonprofits [10:15] and advocating for them. And then I was [10:18] home with my children for a long time [10:20] and we actually just traveled around the [10:22] world going and learning. I homeschooled [10:26] them. We would do lessons on the [10:28] pyramids in Egypt and then we would fly [10:30] to Egypt and see the pyramids. It was it [10:33] was a beautiful thing. It was a really [10:35] beautiful thing to do. And so I'd been [10:37] working also in different uh areas in [10:40] social services and then the city called [10:43] me and here I am. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. [10:46] >> That's that's really um that's really [10:48] dope that you decide to show your kids [10:50] the world, right? How important that is [10:52] to you. Uh, actually super important [10:54] because one of the things that I did [10:56] with that is that I wanted to make sure [10:59] me growing up, I had an amazing [11:01] grandfather who showed us who we were [11:04] and deepened a deep love for Africa and [11:07] being black within us. And so he was [11:09] actually writing this book. He spent [11:11] over 40 years researching and writing a [11:14] book where he was actually rewriting [11:16] history from a non-colonial western [11:18] point of view. So he really instilled [11:21] with us a love of Africa and maps and [11:24] the world and he taught us all of this [11:26] history. And so for me it was really [11:28] important to give that to my children so [11:30] that their identity would not be limited [11:32] and shaped by what this country says [11:35] they are or who they can be but instead [11:37] flip that around and make them limitless [11:40] and show them what the world says that [11:42] they can be and who they believed for [11:44] themselves. [11:45] >> Right. No, absolutely. [11:46] >> That's so awesome. in Minneapolis. If [11:49] you don't know, we are talking to the [11:50] new host of Minneapolis 360, Eiroduction [11:55] to the city um and to the community. And [11:57] and one of the things I I think I'd love [12:00] for you to talk to people about is like, [12:02] okay, so now you working, you have this [12:03] whole history [12:05] >> of nonprofit and working in education. [12:08] >> You get a job in the city of [12:09] Minneapolis, which is governmentyish, [12:12] right? You know, [laughter] you're [12:14] trying to put a light spin on it. [12:16] >> Yeah. So, as you come in and you try to [12:19] learn the city and your role, like what [12:21] are some of the things you want to work [12:23] on, right? What are some of the passions [12:25] that you have that you want to kind of [12:26] deliver while you're here in the city? [12:28] >> Sure. Um, one of my biggest passions [12:30] with, you know, is the youth and kids [12:34] and making sure that like if we want to [12:37] have this city and have a presence of [12:39] blackness in this city that is thriving, [12:43] we have to start to focus on our kids [12:45] and what they are doing and how this [12:48] city is working for them. So that's one [12:50] of my big passions is making sure that [12:53] children and families are connected to [12:56] what is going on in the city and also [12:57] have a voice and a say of what is going [13:00] on in the city because exactly they are [13:02] our future and even our right now they [13:05] are so like my both of my girls are in [13:07] high school. One goes to North and the [13:09] other one goes to Henry which is Camden [13:11] now but it's still Henry to me. It's [13:13] always going to be Henry. And when I [13:16] just think about like the kids who are [13:18] there and their passions and their [13:20] intelligence and their wisdom, there's [13:23] just so much there that is so important [13:25] for the city to be able to connect with [13:27] and them to connect with the city on. So [13:29] that is something that is just very very [13:31] important to me. Absolutely. [13:33] >> So important. And also just figuring out [13:35] again like as I've been learning and [13:37] growing in this role of thinking about [13:40] things like when it snows now, I used to [13:42] just think like, oh damn, it's a snow [13:44] day. But now I'm thinking of snow [13:46] emergencies and how is that going to [13:48] affect the elderly in the community? How [13:51] is that affecting the disabled? And how [13:53] is that going to affect parents on their [13:55] workday and getting their kids to [13:57] school? So I like it's amazing to see [14:00] this transformation happening as I'm [14:02] connecting like my own life experience [14:04] or the work that I've done in the [14:06] community and how that relates back to [14:08] the city. So I'm I'm going to be growing [14:10] with everybody in this role. [14:12] >> Oh, awesome. [14:12] >> That's beautiful. That's And that's [14:14] crazy cuz Kim, over the years, we've had [14:16] the snow emergency segments, right? And [14:19] you know how confusing it is. [14:21] Absolutely. [14:21] >> But you know what? It's taught me [14:23] something cuz I've gotten better now. I [14:24] know how to park the text. [laughter] [14:27] Yeah. [14:27] >> I better move that car. [14:28] >> I call my son. I'll be like, "Look, is [14:30] your car on the street? You can only [14:32] park on the right side." [14:33] >> That's right. This day two [14:36] car. [laughter] Yeah. [14:37] >> Absolutely. Cuz you know what? You go to [14:39] sleep, it snowed, you wake up, your car [14:41] is gone. How you going to get to work? [14:42] >> That part. Yeah, 100%. [laughter] [14:44] And how much it cost to get it out of [14:46] impact. Absolutely. [14:47] >> And everything. So, yeah, I think that [14:49] my lens definitely increased as I [14:51] started to do this show. And one of the [14:53] things I think is important is is the [14:55] messaging, right? Absolutely. What's the [14:57] messaging that we're trying to to uh [14:59] give to people? What are some of the [15:00] things that we can do that most people [15:03] may not think of, right? So, what are we [15:05] thinking of those things? Like a lot of [15:07] times, Kim, we've talked about over the [15:09] years having, you know, an emergency [15:10] plan, [15:11] >> right? A lot of us don't have a plan in [15:14] case there some type of tragedy that [15:16] comes up like what do you do? [15:18] Absolutely. [15:19] >> Do you have a a [15:21] a light flashlight [15:25] candles? [15:27] >> 100%. Is there some way to get your [15:29] medication still stored? If your power [15:31] go out, like there's a lot of things [15:33] that we got to think ahead. [15:35] >> 100% Kim and one of the things that to [15:37] me I think that's important. Now with [15:39] you as as being on on the radio, right? [15:42] So, you know, my voice is a lot better [15:44] radioish than yours right now. [15:47] >> Absolutely. So eventually like I'll [17:02] figure out my flow and figure out my [17:04] style, but always I think it's just [17:06] being authentic and real to the people, [17:09] you know, like [17:10] >> and you're passionate about the you're [17:12] passionate about the north side. And right [20:37] now the blackness is there's being like [20:39] a whitening of the music and it actually [20:42] is black music that was created by black [20:44] Latin Americans. And it's very important [20:46] for people to know that because it's [20:48] getting erased [20:48] >> just like rock and roll was erased from [20:50] black Americans.
