[0:05] Summer is an amazing time in the city of [0:08] Minneapolis. There are lots of events [0:11] and activities that we spend time with [0:14] our family and friends and especially [0:17] around the 4th of July when uh we all [0:20] like to enjoy the fireworks. [0:22] While this is a time for celebration, [0:26] we know that festivities can quickly [0:28] turn tragic if we don't take safety [0:32] seriously. [0:33] Last year, the red, white, and boom [0:35] fireworks celebration returned to [0:37] Minneapolis. [0:38] Tens of thousands of people came [0:40] together to to have a safe and joyful [0:43] night. [0:44] But the night before the 4th, messages [0:47] began circulating on social media, [0:50] encouraging people to come from out of [0:52] town to Minneapolis and attack people [0:55] and police with fireworks. I hope the [0:58] actions of the MPD over the last two [1:00] years have made it clear this behavior [1:03] will not be tolerated. If you come to [1:06] Minneapolis with the intent to harm, [1:08] disrupt, or intimidate, you will be [1:10] arrested. The Henipin County Sheriff's [1:13] Office wants everyone to experience a [1:15] safe holiday celebration. That means we [1:18] will be taking extra measures to prevent [1:20] anyone who wants to disrupt our [1:22] community. We will be doing that with [1:24] Criminal Intelligence Division who will [1:26] be monitoring activity leading up to and [1:29] throughout the weekend. Fireworks should [1:31] only be used by adults. Use legal [1:34] fireworks on your own property, not in [1:37] public spaces. Always read the [1:39] directions prior to using fireworks and [1:42] use them the way that they are intended. [1:44] Keep fireworks a safe distance from [1:46] flammable materials. And when not in [1:49] use, store fireworks in a cool, dry [1:51] place. We are asking people who attend [1:54] the fireworks show to pay close [1:55] attention to their hydration and to the [1:58] weather forecast. Uh there are storms [2:00] currently in the forecast and it looks [2:02] like it's going to be a very hot day. [2:04] The state patrol will be dedicating [2:06] extra patrols in the city. In the last 5 [2:08] years, there are over 1500 DWI arrests [2:11] on this weekend alone. We don't want [2:12] people to be part of this awful [2:14] statistic. We want people to have a safe [2:15] and enjoyable holiday weekend. It's [2:18] critical to remember that 911 should [2:20] only be used for life-threatening or [2:22] time-sensitive [2:24] emergencies. Call 311 for reasons that [2:27] don't require an immediate response, [2:29] such as noise complaints and observing [2:31] illegal use that isn't threatening life [2:33] or property.
