Minneapolis launches fifth annual Black Business Week celebration
Minneapolis city leaders announced the fifth annual Black Business Week, scheduled for July 24-31, 2025, with a focus on celebrating and supporting Black-owned businesses across the city. The initiative aims to build economic power and foster equity throughout Minneapolis.
Mayor Jacob Frey kicked off the announcement by expressing enthusiasm for the annual celebration. "For the fifth year, we're excited to celebrate Minneapolis' Black-owned businesses during Black Business Week," Frey said.
City Council President Elliott Payne emphasized the broader economic impact of supporting Black entrepreneurs. "Supporting Black-owned businesses builds lasting financial power, not just in the Black community, but across all of Minneapolis," Payne said. He also highlighted George Floyd Square as a symbolic starting point for the week's events, noting its cultural significance. "George Floyd Square is a powerful place to start Black Business Week. It reflects the resilience of our Black community, with culture and creativity, and it deserves lasting investment," Payne said.
Ward 8 Council Member Andrea Jenkins, who represents the George Floyd Square area, spoke to the economic activity already happening in her district. "We're here at George Floyd Square, a place I'm proud to represent, where Black businesses are thriving, growing, and just getting started," Jenkins said.
The week-long initiative is designed to celebrate existing Black-owned businesses while supporting entrepreneurs who are launching new ventures. By anchoring events at George Floyd Square, city leaders are directing attention and resources to a neighborhood that has become a symbol of community resilience and cultural pride. The announcement reflects the city's commitment to building equitable economic opportunities across Minneapolis.
