Council Continues Sick Leave Ordinance for Legal Review
The Minneapolis City Council voted Wednesday to delay consideration of updates to the city's earned sick and safe time ordinance for one meeting cycle to allow the City Attorney's Office to review proposed amendments.
Vice President Margaret Chughtai requested the continuation, explaining that potential revisions to the ordinance are under legal review. The delay will allow attorneys to provide a complete analysis of amendments she is considering.
Councilmember Lisa Palmisano, the ordinance's author, reluctantly agreed to the delay but expressed preference for moving forward with the current proposed changes. "These are good clarifying changes that will make it easier for our residents, our businesses, and our staff to interpret and enforce," Palmisano said.
The council also approved routine business including contracts for violence prevention services totaling $3.1 million and an extension of the behavioral crisis response program with Canopy Roots LLC. The program, now housed in the Fire Department, provides mental health professionals to respond to crisis calls.
Additionally, the council set public hearings for September 30 on the 2026 citywide street light operations fee assessment and street maintenance assessment. The meeting began with honorary resolutions recognizing Farmers' Market Week, Civil Rights Director Michelle Phillips' departure, Ecuadorian Independence Day, and the 10th Annual Trans Equity Summit.
