Minneapolis, MN – The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission has voted to recommend local landmark designation for the property located at 3026 Lake Street West. During its regular meeting on June 16, 2026, the commission cast eight affirmative votes, moving the proposed designation forward to the Minneapolis City Council for final review and approval. This decision came after a public hearing and a detailed presentation, navigating formal opposition from the property owner.

The proposal highlights the historical and architectural significance of the structure, situated in the vibrant Cedar-Isles-Dean area of Uptown. Senior City Planner Rob Skalicky presented the comprehensive designation report to the commission. The report detailed how the property fulfills the stringent criteria outlined in Chapter 599 of the Minneapolis Code of Ordinances, which governs local landmark designations and requires a parallel review by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to ensure statewide preservation standards are met.

Community interest in the preservation of 3026 Lake Street West was evident during the public hearing portion of the meeting. Residents offered testimony expressing their desire to safeguard the building's character and its contribution to the neighborhood's identity. Among them was Sara Stevens, a local resident, who passionately articulated the building's value to the community.

Despite the community’s support, the formal opposition from the property owner of 3026 Lake Street West was noted by the commission. However, after careful consideration of all presented materials, including architectural assessments and historical context, the commission proceeded with the vote. Chair Marie Bjornberg facilitated the discussion and public hearing, ensuring all viewpoints were heard before the final deliberation. Commissioner Booty moved to recommend approval of the landmark designation, with Commissioner Corrado seconding the motion, leading to the conclusive 8-0 vote.

In addition to the landmark designation discussion, the Heritage Preservation Commission’s June 16 meeting included other routine business. Commissioners approved the minutes from their May 12, 2026, meeting. Andrea Birk, a supervisor, also took the opportunity to share positive news, announcing that the city’s African-American Historic and Cultural Context Study had been honored with a national AASLH Award of Excellence.
