Heritage Commission Approves Building Certificate
The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness for 250 3rd Avenue North during its July 15 meeting, with Vice Chair Kelly Mastin presiding in the absence of Chair Bjornberg.
The commission placed the Third Avenue North application on its consent agenda without opposition from commissioners or the public. The certificate of appropriateness and historic variance was approved unanimously as recommended by staff. Applicants may contact planning staff about next steps for the approved project.
Heritage Preservation Team Supervisor Andrea Burke provided updates on upcoming preservation conferences and ongoing projects. She announced that registration is open for the Preserve Minnesota Conference scheduled for September 10-12 in New Ulm, noting that scholarships may be available for commissioners to attend.
Burke also reported progress on the Minneapolis African-American Historical Study, which is with the Minnesota Historical Society for final approval. The city has released a request for proposals to prepare National Register nominations for three properties: the Minnesota Spokesman Recorder Building, Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, and Harry Davis Senior House. Proposals are due August 4.
The commission also celebrated the Milwaukee Avenue Historic District's 50th anniversary, which was marked by a community event over the weekend. The next Heritage Preservation Commission meeting is scheduled for July 29.
