Minneapolis Committee Approves Streets Progress Report
The Minneapolis Climate and Infrastructure Committee approved a comprehensive progress report Thursday detailing the city's 2024 transportation infrastructure improvements under the Your City, Your Streets program.
Transportation Planner Gustave Stewart presented the annual report, which highlighted completion of 28 miles of street work in 2024, including 11 miles in Transportation Equity Priority Areas. The city completed 121 intersection upgrades, installed 46 new or upgraded traffic signals, and added 212 curb extensions throughout the year.
Major projects completed in 2024 included reconstruction of Hennepin Avenue from Lake Street to 26th Street, featuring protected bike lanes and green stormwater infrastructure. The Upper Harbor Terminal redevelopment project added new parkway infrastructure along the Mississippi River, while the Hiawatha-Lake Street intersection was reconfigured in partnership with Hennepin County and MnDOT.
Committee Chair Katie Cashman praised the city's ability to leverage federal infrastructure funding from the Biden administration's Infrastructure and Jobs Act and Inflation Reduction Act. She noted Minneapolis is now considered the most bike-friendly city in the country and emphasized the importance of Safe Routes to School programs for attracting families to the district.
The committee also approved 10 consent agenda items, including easement acquisitions, railroad crossing improvements, and public hearing schedules for various assessment districts. The Your City, Your Streets program, established by a 2016 ordinance, provides minimum annual funding for street capital projects using asset, equity and safety criteria to prioritize improvements.
