Heritage Commission Questions Factory Delisting After Fire

Meeting date: Nov 11, 2025
Published Nov 14, 2025

The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission voted Monday to oppose the delisting of the fire-damaged Aaron Carlson Corporation Factory from the National Register of Historic Places, citing insufficient information to make an informed decision.

The commission cannot recommend that the factory at 1505 Central Avenue Northeast no longer retains sufficient historic integrity for National Register listing, commissioners said during their November 10 meeting. The property was significantly damaged by fire on September 7, 2025.

Commissioners expressed concerns about the limited documentation provided by the State Historic Preservation Office, which included only one post-fire photograph. "It kind of seems to me like this isn't quite a thorough overview of the property," said Commissioner Rodriguez. "I would have appreciated a few more photos within the report."

The Aaron Carlson Corporation Factory was listed on the National Register in October 2020 for its role in manufacturing pontoon bridge components during World War II. The company was the only Minneapolis lumber mill to receive the Army Navy E Award for its wartime contributions. Property representatives had contacted city staff in February 2025 about potential demolition before the fire occurred.

In separate action, the commission approved lighting modifications for a warehouse at 300 1st Avenue North, including removal of a nonfunctional chimney and installation of exterior lighting fixtures. The commission modified staff recommendations to allow a lighting mock-up rather than requiring installation of a single test fixture before proceeding with the full project.
