Minneapolis Certifies Record Municipal Election Results
The Minneapolis City Canvassing Board certified the results of the Nov. 5 municipal election Monday, confirming record-breaking voter turnout of 55% among registered voters.
The board unanimously approved the official canvass during a meeting at City Hall, declaring winners in all 22 contested races. Katie Smith, director of Elections and Voter Services, reported that ballots were cast in what she called "the highest turnout of any Minneapolis municipal election on record."
The election featured expanded early voting options, with 317 hours of in-person voting available over a 46-day period beginning Sept. 19. Early voting accounted for 17.9% of total turnout, while 82.1% of voters cast ballots on Election Day across all 137 precincts. Election Day registration was used by 10.6% of voters.
Ranked choice voting tabulation was completed for seven races, with the final race declared Wednesday afternoon after nearly six hours of tabulation work. Fifteen other contests had clear winners declared on election night when candidates surpassed the required threshold.
The certification triggers a seven-day contest period during which eligible voters may challenge election results. After that period expires Nov. 18, the city clerk will issue certificates to declared winners. The board also selected precincts for the required post-election audit, scheduled for Nov. 17 at the Elections and Voter Services office.
