Westonka Schools Board Approves Staff Contracts, Construction Leases
The Westonka Public Schools Board unanimously approved eight major items on July 14, including new contracts for principals and office staff through 2028 and a lease extension for sports facilities. The decisions reflect the district's effort to balance budget constraints with competitive compensation as it manages extensive construction projects across its campuses.
The board approved two-year employment contracts for the Principal Association and Educational Office Employees, with district leadership emphasizing the need to remain competitive in the region while managing budget constraints. "When we look at how we approach contracts, we obviously look at our budget. We look at being competitive in the area that we are and we work hard to make sure that we can keep staff," said Kevin, a district administrator.
In facility-related decisions, the board extended its lease agreement with Taylor Pond Management Company for the Pond Sports Center and David M. Taylor Sports Center for one year, with an option for an additional year. This arrangement allows the district to continue using existing facilities while assessing how the newly completed stadium will affect building usage patterns and utility needs.
The board also restructured the boys' swim and dive program by dissolving the existing cooperative agreement and establishing a new one that adds Southwest Christian High School to the partnership with West Tonka and Holy Family Catholic High School. District officials noted that the expanded cooperative will increase participation, particularly benefiting relay teams with more available athletes.
Additionally, the board approved expanding contract days for two administrative assistant positions—one in food service and one in technology and facilities—to formally recognize their increased workload. The district also approved the annual 10-year Long-Term Facility Maintenance plan and related revenue levies required to qualify for state funding. All votes passed unanimously. The district is preparing for its annual audit, which will be conducted in August and presented to the board in October. The official grand opening of the district's fully renovated facilities is scheduled for Fall 2027.
