Minnetonka Integrates Historic Zoning Rewrite with Future Sustainability Goals
The Minnetonka Sustainability Commission recently discussed the critical intersection of the city's comprehensive zoning ordinance update and its long-term climate action strategy, charting a course for sustainable development.
The Minnetonka Sustainability Commission convened on September 15, 2026, facing a pivotal shift as the city moves to integrate its comprehensive 2026-2027 zoning rewrite with its long-term climate goals. The meeting, held in the Council Chambers, primarily focused on the ongoing overhaul of the city's zoning ordinance, the development of the 2027 Sustainability Commission Work Plan, and a series of staff updates on current environmental initiatives.
This is a monumental period for Minnetonka. The revised zoning ordinance will lay the groundwork for how our community grows and develops for decades, and ensuring it aligns seamlessly with our sustainability ambitions is paramount,” said Brian Golob, Chair of the Sustainability Commission.
Overhauling the City's Zoning Ordinance
A major topic of discussion centered on the city's initiative to completely rewrite its 1966 zoning ordinance. This significant undertaking aims to bring the city's land use regulations into alignment with the recently adopted 2040 Comprehensive Plan. The new ordinance seeks to establish a modern, proactive framework that clearly defines allowed uses, supports diverse housing options, maintains environmental protections, and simplifies the development process for residents and businesses alike.
City Planner Susan Thomas underscored the importance of the rewrite for future development. “Updating our zoning from a prescriptive, reactive model to a proactive, outcome-based approach will allow us to better achieve the vision set forth in our Comprehensive Plan,” Thomas stated, emphasizing the goal of fostering a more resilient and equitable community through updated regulations.
