Minnetonka Moves Forward with Zoning Code Rewrite, Adjusting Density Standards
City officials discussed updated development guidelines, including an increase in residential units per acre and considerations for public input processes.
Minnetonka officials recently provided an update on the ongoing comprehensive zoning code rewrite, revealing adjustments to residential density guidelines and discussions around public engagement mechanisms. The update highlighted the city's shift in its guide plan, increasing the allowable residential units per acre and addressing public understanding of complex development permits.
A key change presented during the discussion was the move to permit a higher residential density within the city. This modification signifies a potential for more compact development and diverse housing options across the community.
It's five units per acre. Used to be the guidance overall in the guide plan for Minnetonka. Um, it's now moved up to seven units per acre uh in Minnetonka.
The conversation also delved into the role of Conditional Use Permits (CUPs) in the new zoning framework. City Planner Susan Thomas acknowledged public interest in these permits as a way to ensure community input on specific projects.
We heard that that was something that maybe um people would like because there's a a public process associated with that. The flip side is that um we have a lot of people in the public who don't understand conditional use permits and that's maybe on us to do a better education on conditional use permits.
