calendar dates uh for our regular school board meetings and as usual they're going to be held at Watertown city hall at 6: p.m. um there's also a little cheat sheet that you guys have on top of this little calendar um with those board dates circled St Patrick's Day everyone's Irish on December 15th or the 22nd March 17th December we're already complaining December 22nd would be our break yeah what would be the date in December because between the two they were different ones different dates two different ones that's probably the it would be the 15th 15th oh yeah the 15th that's my fault I'll reprint you all calendars n it's okay we have it on the not we good are you sure yes Save a tree two and I believe that there's a couple months that are not on the fourth Monday Yeah March March May and December are the three that are not on the fourth otherwise it's the fourth of every month so is there a motion to approve the there a reason for that so actually may I ask a question Mr phel so with December I did have the 22nd it is the fourth Monday we are not in we are in school that day we do not have a break so we can keep it on the 22nd or we can do the 15th so you just tell me which one you would like to have that's a error it's a clerical error on my part but if you want to make that decision it's typically the fourth Monday we are in school on the 22nd my vot for 15th I thought the new calendar said they that we have full two weeks we do yeah do we yeah the first it's all it's it's all the train okay so keep the 15th 15th thank you for the clarification get it all over and done with here in January I've only been through it seven times what's the reason for the March one I'm sorry being the third instead of spring break it comes yeah after the spring break this year yeah y yeah it's hard because March isn't here yet so it's hard for us to look at this March and think it's not this I got it's hard yeah on the C we have to on the C this is this March yes yes and so I have a motion by made my Mr Burns I'll second it I have a motion made by Mr Burns second by Miss Danielson any further discussion on the board meeting dates uh do you want to go ahead can we consider the 31st for March the 5th Monday when you come back from break we would be back yep up there I mean it doesn't matter to so the 31st instead of the 17th right that's what we're looking at it's just thr conflicting St patri the 17th so yeah 31st be better for me too good call there's reason not even I know why she's [Laughter] gone going once going twice any other don't mind the motion to change the March date to the 31st at least the second second sorry so I have a motion made by Mr Burn seconded by Miss nton to amend the March 17th date to March 31st all those in favor say I I I all oppose nay motion is approved to amend the March date um and now we'll need another motion right no back to the newly amended motion which was made by Mr bur second by Miss Danielson correct all those in favor say I I I'll oppose nay all right this is like the easiest meeting and it seems like we're having the most discussion we're a little passionate tonight yeah okay all right we'll send out those calendar invites to perect thank you I appreciate that yeah I don't do it until after this meeting yeah smart they're not approved at that point um item C motion to approve the following designation for uh 2025 the official District newspaper of the heral journal uh office District Bank depositories of bremmer bank and MN trust PMA Financial Network LLC official legal advisers Kennedy and Graven chartered and official financial advisors Baker Tilly Municipal advisors llci and MN trust PMA Financial Network LLC and I believe that these four have been the same as last year as well correct no changes any concerns with the impending sale of Brer oh you know that's a good question um I can't imagine that there would be yeah I don't think they're leaving town or anything like that but think so um who bought them Old Republic okay who sorry who about Old Republic I think Old National or old old national Old National Old National sorry what is that official is it I don't know I just heard it in inou ago I passing this or this afternoon so it's like but yeah I don't think no concerns from our end okay is there a motion to approve the designations so move I'll second motion made by Miss Schultz seconded by Miss Geto any further discussion on the designations hearing none all those in favor say I I all oppose nay motion carries according to this article mid 2025 so the summer item D motion to approve the superintendent Darren Schuler finance officer Lisa Raider and contracted District payroll processor SMS to initiate transfer invest and authorized District funds and transfers on behalf of Waterton mayor School District 111 for fy2 and for district office Administrative Assistant Heather huan to perform some of the duties of clerk got it so moved second motion made by Miss Danielson second by Mr onell any further discussions hearing none all those in favor say I I all oppose nay motion carried item e motion to approve the school board compensation for fy2 um I provided uh Miss huan to link in here uh comparables for some of our neighboring districts this was an Ask uh last January by the board uh so I did throw that um together our current compensation is the chair is 3,000 a year all other board officers Vice chair clerk Treasurer are 2600 and regular board of directors are 2400 with those on the Personnel committee two $250 additional so and the last time we updated I believe was in 21 C right sounds sounds right and prior to that who knows it was by meeting yeah it was it it was by meeting yeah but I mean it was when that got decided sure as well before my tenure so is there any further discussion kind of looking at at sort of what some of those comp comparables are seems like we're right in the middle and some of them like Howard Lake Waverly Winstead was by meeting so obviously it was just times 12 as they go from there so we will we will need a motion in a second to either keep it at the same or make any changes I'll make a motion to uh keep as present Ed motion made by m getco seconded by Mr Burns any further discussion on the compensation was something like this helpful this year for you guys it's a lot of work to be able to pull it so I if we want it for next year I would only suggest pulling it if we're thinking about changing it right we're all in the mind that we're just going to leave it the same then you don't need to go through I think wait a couple years I think we're so in the middle right now I don't know why you would yeah I wouldn't do it next I mean and I didn't include any of the inner city ones which are yeah I mean I would think 20s thousands if you're hearing at the you know at a different level that lots of things are changing then we can have another conversation but I agree and it also depends where we are as a district too yeah for sure for sure for sure y cool so I I'll kind of leave that as as all right um any other further discussion on it hearing none all those in favor say I I I'll oppose nay motion carries um item F School Board committees um I attached the 2024 click on the other one Mr Scher um the current ones as well as the proposed there are no changes I didn't make any changes um I know I kind of reached out to you guys to kind of gauge feeling um I heard back from some of you and just kind of wasn't able to make some of it some of those changes work so there were no changes Mo approval second motion made by Mr Burns seconded by Miss naton uh any further discussion on the Committees all those in favor say I I I'll oppose nay motion carries it's kind of it's It's the nice thing about having the same board year after year you know but again if you guys are interested in future years of jumping around to different things please let me know and I can try to make make things work um I think it works right now but always we can it never hurts for us to know a little bit of everything either um moving on to the review and information items uh Schoolboard policy 209 the code of ethics um Mr Schuler yes uh Mr chair uh the board of ethic or excuse me the code of ethics is something we review and are asked to review at the start of every um uh year and as we get into uh 2025 uh it is uh again as an opportunity just to review this uh hopefully again you had an opportunity just to review this uh yourselves personally but um I don't think I probably need to read it for you um but again um it is a good reminder just to walk through this I I feel very fortunate I think our board does a really good job of upholding uh the the ethics piece here and uh our respectful of each other and the work of the school and the work of the school district and the work of the superintendent and um again um are there questions or any concerns that you have but again it's a good uh reminder once a year of our obligations um your obligation as a board member and my obligation as superintendent um and to fulfill those obl oig ation so any other questions no I just like to reiterate what Mr Schuler said you know kind of if if you haven't read it do a quick read through it I think a lot of it is common sense you know it's coming prepared to the meetings you know regardless of how how we vote you know the the majority rules right so even if you voted against something if it passes guess what you're everyone's falling in line with the passes and jumping behind it so um simple things like that but you know I feel very fortunate that we have a very good board um makes my job easier makes Mr Schuler's job easier and you know appreciate all you guys do so absolutely uh moving on to Item B uh the superintendent midyear review for your goals Mr Sher uh thank you Mr chair I just want to give you a kind of a midyear update on my goals and uh again this will be more verbal uh but I can put up the kind of the four main goals that I'm working towards this year um marketing our schools and um strategic growth a couple of things that I've been working on this year there are just um doing some more promotional pieces you saw maybe the flyer that we sent out earlier uh at the start of the school year to some of our families that are um non public and some of our families that are open enrolled and some school families that are homeschooling and um so we're tracking some of the um how we're doing on that we're also working with the marketing and Communications committee to do another roll out of that um I think some of the consensus was the one time was probably not enough to get a real sense of is that making a difference um so just doing some return on investment on some of those um we also did the digital marketing advertising we'll do that again on a digital bullet um board um in St Bonnie we're also doing the um 111 reasons to be a royal uh via Facebook and Heather's been helping with that um I'm kind of the recruiter she's more of the uh get it up on the on the social media sites um but it's working really well and we're getting some good feedback on that um and then again just tracking some engagement with that um and then lastly in the spring we're hoping to do a a royal Pride award in which we're going to recognize a business um an organization and an individual um for just going above and beyond showing Royal pride in supporting our school district so you'll hear more about that as we get into the spring and in April we'll take some nominations um and we have a criteria that we're looking for there and we'll we'll award that individual or organization um at the may actually it'll be June uh Workshop day the last teacher day so we'll celebrate those people and welcome them with a plaque um goal two focused on the budget adjustment process um so um one of the things I did this year is put into a month-by-month budget process and actually I'm happy to report that we're a little bit ahead of schedule um on that process and we've met with all the principles uh before break and get a little bit better idea of where they're at in terms of uh Staffing for next year and and and possible reductions so uh that was a good start to that process um now Mr hennon in the fall excuse me in in February we'll do in uh registration so we'll start to get a better idea of where students are placed and what classes they're choosing and and how will staff the high school next year same with the Middle School we're pretty much um in that mode of um seeing exactly where we're at for Staffing then we start looking at how we can share staff and that's part of the process that we knew coming into this year is we're going to have to do some more of that so U Mr hennen and Mr uh girton and I will be working on that as we get into later February um and obviously come back to the board with some um thoughts on where we're at and as far as possible reductions um those are couple of the bigger ones uh the other one we're working on and this came in line with um a new facilities director and and and Mr leasman but um we're developing um just a more of a comprehensive way of collecting data and all of our equipment uh we never really had that previously uh so we're using uh a site called uh site logic which we've had previously we just never have done it we never put the in put it in the inventory so um I'm working with Mr uh lisman in terms of getting all that inventory all of his custodians his leads are taking that information so if they change out a belt on a piece of equipment they're taking the barcode off of that putting in our inventory system so it's going to be a process and again we don't have a huge staff so we're going as uh as we replace things we're putting those things in so um and and I know some of the guys on the facilities committee have seen that as well we've looked at a couple different varieties this is nice in that we already have the system we're not paying extra for it I think it'll meet our needs and I'll share more out uh as we go on with the year there but that is taking care of everything in terms of um interior spaces hopefully even furniture will get down to that level but um all of our operating systems will be able to document an inventory so that's good um um the other one is goal three and we're really working there on again year four of our mtss development um and things are are going really well and it's it's fun to see this really starting to as we get into year four to see that progression this year I'm really helping uh focus on the high school um with our goal this year of reducing that AB absenteeism um they're meeting on a monthly basis and I'm able to be a part of those meetings but just really looking at uh attendance um behaviors and then student course performance and we're really lumping those together and the two counselors Mr Barons myself Mr view Are all uh a part of those conversations um and that's been good to see the high school moving into that uh mtss uh mode as well um and then again we're tracking students Le chronically absent like we've talked about we wanted to reduce that by 10% and um uh our midy year uh kind of our mid year so end of December we're tracking about uh 1 or 2% better almost in every building not huge gains like we you know we're not seeing the 10% yet but we are seeing some nice gains in terms of lowering that number um and chronically absent so um Miss huan pulled all that data from September through December um and we worked through that and it's it's looking better not maybe as good as we had hoped um but 2 to 3% in just about every building is the Improvement we seen so far the first half of the Year roughly or the first four months um and lastly go four um one of the things I've kind of reinitiated as my uh msba training so I've done uh phase three and phase four this year as as well as their um Financial um uh Academy it's called I guess financial academy um completed that this fall as well so I've got those three um completed and it was good it was a good uh refresh for me I did those 5 years ago and I was took the position and it's a was a good refresh from the msba side and the finance Academy is actually really good too those were three full day virtual sessions um which I participated in and uh was it was really good and it was superintendents it was business managers um a wide variety of folks um from new superintendent to experience to uh all over the Spectrum so it was it was really good so um couple of those are are wrapped up already so that's just a quick overview of of some of the things I've been working on so any questions all right well that concludes the review and information items on the main part of our meeting so um next up is going to be our board work session um I don't know if we want to take a quick five minute bio break while I get my computer set up while we sure do it so all right we shall reconvene and do we have to Jour and then reopen I'm declaring the recess for five minutes rewind e e e it's one of those things where this is the time it's a very quick meeting it's time to kind of reenter a couple things um and I have two things on the docket here our legislative priorities document that me and Mr Schuler have kind of worked on and then results from our our board survey that I did toward the end of last year um so we can just kind of jump in I provided you guys the um presentation so not sure if you've had a chance to look through it again agendas the prior legislative priorities and then our survey um kind of going to go over our process what the overall listing was the draft which I also provided to you guys and sort of what the next steps and the reasons why we did this um one of the things that our district I don't believe has ever really done was to put together a legislative priority stuff to go to the state capital with to to talk to our legislators about what what are things that as Watertown mayor as the board of directors as the admin what can we kind of push forward or or advocate for for um so uh me and Mr Schuler kind of found out what other districts are doing and and sort of what their processes were um unfortunately a lot of them were bigger districts where they had you know a parent group that did a lot of this work for them but again these are bigger districts not a district of 1450 kids you know so I kind of took this on as this is our first time doing it if it works great if it doesn't great um and after I kind of we got that done I sent examples sort of with what some other districts are doing what msba masasa uh theirs are and and really the advice that I got from msba was copy it word for word use what we already have you know you don't need to go off the you know off the radar and do your own thing um so I sent out a survey to you guys I compiled it all narrowed it down to really two key topics but with some bullet points underneath and right now the draft is created and and it's for us to discuss and and kind of say is this sort of what we wanted to see are there changes um it will be brought to the board for approval in January just to kind of get again that out in the public that we're all kind of on the same page or the majority of us are on the same page as we go down talking to our legislators and with the with the ultimate goal of providing this to our Representatives whether it's at the state capital or as an example um in Friday we have representative Harter coming in to visit our district um to meet with us over lunch so I'm going to be able to be there Mr Schuler's kind of kind of setting up that so it's kind of we're getting out there we've never really met of our reps we're bringing them in let let's let's let them know who we are well Hunter just great work on this I mean I think this is an awesome you know may but it's like as a leave behind or something like to me it's actually it's it's great pie that's that was kind of the the the thought process of it it's I I Envision this going on our website you know under the Schoolboard section or a different section um as well as going as a leave behind something that um msba has the day at the capital which I'm going to be attending this year and I think Mr Schuler is going to be attending too so as we meet with our legislators there hey this is about us and by the way come into our district you know you represent us come in and see the cool things that we're doing so in in the effort of transparency I wanted to provide you guys um all the results that I got I don't know if you've looked at it this is what the three things that everybody had said so what I tried to do is take all of those items and tried to bucket them in column A like categories you know you have to start somewhere and starting to combine we actually had a lot of them that were fairly similar which was really good um and with that being said we really kind of and and me and Mr Schuler worked on this a fair amount Miss Huen helped put together the formatting so I can I got to give her props and and it has I don't know if it's been through her review fully either so again that's why this is a draft um but with the lead in here sort of what makes us special what is our tagline what's our strategic Vision that we want um but the two things major bullets that we kind of came up with were funding and local control um funding it's it's not keeping with inflation how do we utilize ltfm Revenue expand its usages as well as sort of that uh supplemental funding you know that that we had talked about a few months back and then from a local control side we we kind of bucketed that that no unfunded mandates the read act you know we were kind of on the front end of that MH but yet we're not seeing much of that funding come back everybody that's doing it now was seeing some sort of reimbursement but we were the tip of the spear we're seeing the the benefits of it but we're not getting some of that repercussions um unemployment insurance and the spe special ed cross subsidy so those were kind of the the big items that we had kind of come across with I tried to get you guys this a little bit in advance um comments questions complaints changes you guys want to see I mean you can you can email me and Mr Schuler after the meeting if you guys kind of looked at it too if you look at other school district like how you know I think this is great for us but if you want change right it's better when it encompasses like how do we align is is it a lot of the same is it what I do you know what I'm asking y Mr scher's got all the other um ones but I I think you know from a I I I think overall a lot of a lot of other districts a lot of discussion that at the msba level was funding right you know we have to know how much funding we're going to get you know are you going to uh you know the basic formula okay it's inflation this is going to be the first year it's going to be tied to inflation so what is that going to look like how do you know and then from a local control they've been uh pushing the unfunded mandates for for quite a while so really that's in a district our size or smaller we're the ones that are really really seeing the burden of those unfunded mandates I don't know if you take the word unfunded out of that and just say no more mandates yeah well and I think to Hunter's Point I think the 2023 legisl legislative secession was the one that really hit hard with the mandates yeah there was so-called historical funding in terms of the uh percent increase you know the per pupil increase but on the flip side of that there was these unfunded mandates and you know unemployment insurance was one the react funding uh here's a perfect example today we had a a webinar on um on a literacy lead and a part of that uh legislation in 2023 was every District by August 1st of uh this of 25 needs to have a literacy lead in place in their District now literacy lead is basically someone who is facilitating um coaching teachers on literacy and it could be prek through 12 um but never once did they say is that a full-time position is that a halftime position is that you know a district compared to us compared to St Michael what is that look like so finally today they came out and said well doesn't have to be a full-time position matter of fact it can be a shared position with another District so these are all things we never knew um the other piece of it was they they allocated $40,000 for our district that was the dollar amount that we were given to fund this position and the question was asked by someone else in in the group that said okay well 40,000 isn't going to probably purchase that person to be in that role right that's not the salary is going to be it's going to be well above that so where do we supplement that well that's for you to figure out the local level you know there's your local control just pull it from somewhere else well that money is going to be pulled from some other program obviously if we're going to do that so you know that's a perfect example of maybe there was good intent behind it I understand that but you know now we're trying to figure out how do we staff that is there someone in our district internally they could do that work you know at one point they had said they must have a literacy licensure they must have a number of different LIC now they came out and said well it doesn't have to be that way it could be a teacher um on special assignment you know there's some flexibility so those are just it's just one example that happened today that it's frustrating can they add that can it be part of the role of Mr V or it could be added to another role right yes you could add that matter of fact you know I talked to Howard Lakes a superintendent um last year I said what are you doing well we're going to they had someone in place for this year and I said let's keep the door open for an exchange you know maybe we can share somebody similar size districts I don't know how that would work you know do you spend a week in in one District the second week in the other District there's different reading curriculums so it's it may be a little awkward yeah but you know could be done I don't know so those are things that we've we've talked about and um but D Hunter's Point I guess yeah that there's there's impact there okay um the other part you know for example I spoke of St Michaels that was one group that we talked to and um they're really open on what they're doing like Hunter said they've got a huge Cadre of parent volunteers that help push this on their agenda but they had funding and Equalization um St Michael is one district one of the few districts in the state that doesn't have an operating um Levy so they're basically reliant on the state funding solely um you know that's a that's a big deal for them and they said local control as well um was a big one Princeton was another one that we talked to they were great about sending information back um stable and predictable funding Fair funding um fund mandates fully um comprehensive uh education um which is a little bit more on you know substitutes getting Subs in um repealed at one point there was a $200 a day rate for short call Subs that was going to be mandated they said they didn't want that and then uh to the long-term facilities point that was one piece they they open up the long-term facility funding to make that more broad rather than just in specific areas and then uh support local control was the other one so um little wide ranging but similar as well and some of them are one pagers two pagers MH um I with with putting the bullets on there I like the one pager you're going to lose people these point you can drop so again I I wanted to get the draft in your guys's um hands to to review it to see it um again any comments concerns complaints questions please feel free you know between now and uh the end of January um send them my way send them Mr Schuler's way uh we'll kind of go from there but again we're looking at um approving this in the January meeting so it it doesn't have to if you have I I can see you you have you have ideas and there's a bunch yeah one of I so obviously under local control it's all we still talk all about funding so I don't know if there's other things that could fall underneath here or you know like to me some of these would be local control so if there's a mandate or something that there's an appeals process or something based on our size or when it has to do with demographics or whatever that it doesn't make sense for us to do that that we would have local control I I don't know if those are you know if that's an appropriate bullet point or something but I just want to make sure we've got funding and local control and what part of the local control sort of options to decide type of thing yeah yeah and I think that's kind of where that that unfunded mandates come from you know it I when you know down in same Paul they're talking about you know oh well oh they can just hire a new teacher well what about a district our size or even smaller in northern Minnesota right or I think of like world's best Workforce when we're comparing disparities and like we we do not have that in our district it's very hard for a district that doesn't have this the level of diversity for us to be do that and then we can't look at things like free lunch or you know qualifiers or things like that that might show uh economic disparities that that we know impact uh learning so um you know I we're just not given that that to me is a local control thing I would like to say based on our district we want to measure on this and you know have some kind of a process to do that so Heidi are you saying those three fully fund bullets up into the funding session yeah or are you saying am reward those to say allow us to decide if we want to provide unemployment insurance for 9mth employment yes yeah I mean yeah it could go either way it could [Music] mhm yeah there's way to I we want to have a couple of bullets but is there a way to to just say like you said give us some options yeah on on these on these mandates yeah yeah yeah provide um yeah provide provide more options for your unfunded mandates that better fit the varied size demographic demographics of our districts and state y it's not a one- siiz fits all right it's not all a noit yeah right well and even I mean in in other employer worlds um even like the um unemployment stuff is based on the size of the employer so I mean again in other scenarios those would be considered you know whether you'd have to pay unemployment or not or if they you know it's truly a contractive role for x amount of percentage and then break it yeah no and again this is our first stab so if you guys think of anything in the next week or two please feel free to reach out but thank you for the feedback on that we can meet and update that Darren but we'll let you guys get a copy of it before it hits January to so moving on to the next one the the board survey results um so again the agenda here is the why how comparison what the results were in the comparison and sort of some next steps um so really when I did this back in 21 it was to kind of get myself more acquainted with what's going on at the at our board level um find areas what we're strong in what we need Improvement in and you know you're kind of gung-ho kind of saying oh what can we fix what can we do um the questions came from msba they were the same as as last time in in 21 just to kind of keep things even uh there's other groups that do offer a charge um I think it's like two grand or so th000 to $2,000 to come in and and run through this workshop with you uh I think we're good enough we don't have enough internal Conflict for that that's with how we work together you know if we were very individually we might yeah collectively if we were a very dysfunctional board talk to you about that Jim um and and so we're kind of keeping this in-house and then sort of I want guidance again from you guys now we did it in 21 we did it in 24 you know I don't think it's something something that needs to be done annually no you know is every 2 3 four years every year that Lisa gets reelected to the board all right I put a note down for that one um you know so it it's right now it's kind of an ad hoc thing um but I I it's good to kind of gauge where we are yeah and one of the things that msba did was they added these pillars of board Effectiveness so I added that and took the same pillars looked it back at 21 24 so I know these are kind of small so sorry if you look at the graph the blues are positives are agree strongly agree and the Reds on the left are the disagree now throughout all the questions I I put all the questions in mhm um throughout all the questions there were no strongly disagrees which makes me feel good however we did have some red ones and and I we'll focus on those and a little bit like number three improving student learning is a primary focus of our board team two board members said that they disagreed with that statement okay well that's not a quorum but that's that's a good chunk of of us that decided you know that didn't feel that we're in it for improving student learning so when we get to that point you know we can have a discussion sort of how we want to focus that um and the gray in the middle is obviously the I don't know which is which is fine so questions 11 to 20 21 to 31 and that was it was the so maybe that don't know because I see all number 11 was all board members support the decision of the board even when the vote is not unanimous and to me that would be like a we haven't had to deal with that so that's why you no and I think I think that I don't knows are are an okay thing yeah you know my in my world in my brain I want to focus on the the negatives right yes right if if things are working fine honky Dory that's great but if things aren't that's kind of where I want to sure you know have a discussion between the seven of us um also too there was actually eight I had Mr Schuler fill it out about us too so there was eight of us so you're this one that skewed all the results just kidding um so from the disagree and below what I did is I kind of did a comparison for those five questions so like in 2021 we had three members that disagreed that we adopt annual goals and priorities this year we only had one and I think whether or not it's annual goals my my perspective is you know we have the Strategic plan we update that that's those are our goals that's what we're ultimately shooting for um and the next one question three we had and that's I have it highlighted red because to me that's something that that stood out you know looking at the data that improving student learning is a primary focus of our board team decision making um I mean I I would like to think that we're all here to improve our students one way or the other um obviously you know there there's folks that that maybe don't feel we need to refocus ourselves on that and how do we go about changing that you know two out of seven how do we go about you know ensuring that students are our primary focus and that everybody feels that way now I don't remember what I answered I don't either I I it was all Anonymous I I don't know who answered what so but to me when I look at this my initial gut reaction is that we focus so much on catching up the students that need the help the most but we are missing that whole other group of kids that Excel and aren't don't have the opportunities to go above and beyond what they're you know capable of so like our gift like a gifted and talented B sure I that's what we talk I agree I think when we when we talk at at board meetings or the things that are presented it seems like the focus and and we don't there's nothing wrong with that I just we just don't I don't think it's always talking about the other side or the other you know side of that I mean I think we've tried to reflect that when we did our um was it last year that's all sitting the administrators were here theic planning process planning process we talked about like how do we position that that we have stuff for gifted students as well as right providing for special you know and maybe even that's something to you know kind of bring back to the the admin teams and say you know like you said we we a lot of the measures we have are on those students those you know MCAS and stuff so that tells you those students that we need to work extra supports on why not do just the flip side and report on some of the we have so many students that are exed exceeding and how we fostering that correct the other thing too is I think about um us being able to identify even in in an agenda you know how is this impacting student learning the decisions that we make or if it's in the minutes or the notes or something about you know yeah tying it back to how this decision will impact that we serve would it be sort of tying it back and and I know we used to do this with our old strategic plan tying it back to that you know they had each one so whatever item e was was tied to this item and this item and this item I mean is that something potentially I I I mean it's a lot of and you know yeah let's not create busy work yeah a little bit busy work but you know I I think at some point it's a good report back I think back to our community that we serve though is like when when they ask questions of well what are you actually doing for and we can list here's the things that impact daily learning here's something that impacts our financial you know like because very simply it's three buckets right you have the ones that that need the extra supports the ones that are it's like the bell curve right and then you have the ones that are the gifted right so you kind of have the three the three buckets and it's reporting on all three buckets mhm really and and I don't know what it needs to be but again to me this was just something that stood out to me in in the in the results um still have somebody you know talking about uh information shared equally with all board members that's a tough one um it it really is because you have the quorums you know not everyone's going to be attending the marketing meeting or the bo or anything like that I know we've talked in the the past our old website actually had spots for U minutes you know from the committee minutes but again is that just is that just more busy work you know do do we who's going to be directed to take the minutes for every and i' be curious I mean is it a is it a disagree or is it I don't know like these were disagrees oh those are disagrees y the this this slide is all disagree we never had anybody say strongly disagree so it's it's it's I kind of disagree with it um but yeah that information shared equally is a tough one you know I I've tried to send out some stuff I know Mr Schuler sends out his his Friday but that's kind of why we have the Committees really is to make those decisions we those report yeah you do yeah exactly rely on your committee members to report back and that is the one part of the agenda too at the end where everybody has an opportunity to speak on behalf of their committee and give an update so that is is always there and then the last one is the annual self assessment maybe we get rid of the word annual there um yeah yeah because that's true you know I'm surprised only one person said they disagreed with that and not everybody because we don't do it annually right um so those were kind of the the the disagree and Below kind of the comparison from 21 to 24 now kind of getting onto those pillars there's the five standards conduct and ethics Vision setting structure accountability and advocacy and Communications so if we look at well this is just the the two years if if we take those 31 questions and and bucket them into one of those five pillars when we look at it I think we had think it was one person or one negative from the standard twos which is Vision set and communicate high expectations for student learning with clear goals and plans to meet those I mean I think that kind of goes right in line with that uh the other one we had the the two negatives on you know so again I'm I'm one that kind of focuses on the negatives and and tries to figure out how we can move those I mean we're all not all going to be 100% you know um so this was just kind of where we stood between 21 and 24 in in those in those pillars so like standard two we were we had a couple more and then did not know a little bit more in the uh disagree column um and and otherwise everything else kind of kind of fed in line there so again that that's kind of what I wanted to provide you guys with with that information so kind of next steps you know we kind of talked about how often we want to do this every every few years I think that that's a very valid thing and you know whether it's going into this year it's not maybe not setting specific goals or priorities but how do we focus how can we focus on some of those red areas you know the um those those folks that disagreed with some of those things how can we focus on that as a board the seven of us to try to give everybody what they want and I think we've had some good ideas already I would say two things though it's not just the red it's the it's that gray like the don't know how do we Elevate everyone on the board to feel like we are in the no I mean I think that's something to consider is like you know what else and that could be individual conversations with you Darren or Hunter is just you know I look at this and I see a lot of gray in that in that five standards comparison and so what what is it going to take to um get everybody that may have answered I don't know to feel like they know more of what's happening and is it you know newer PE newer people to the board or you know or is it those of us that have been around for a long time like you know I still don't quite understand how this works but I think that there's opportunity there that's a good point yeah whether it be individual meetings are just again feeling always welcome to call me email me let me know if there's something you don't understand or want no more on just a phone call I mean absolutely we can do more of that yeah and looks like standard two and standard four then were the were the big ones with the with the Grays you know meeting student learning expectations and which those kind of go hand in hand I think probably the same but no I think that that's a good good call out Heidi you know and and like like Mr Schuler said you know my door is always open too if you guys have you know questions comments concerns you know we're all here hopefully for the same reason you know we're passionate about the school district right we want to move things forward and prove where we're at so how do we get there there's multiple different ways how we get there it's how do we push forward how do we roll the boat that how can we within the boundaries of the rules that we have obviously in place how can we go about fostering discussions amongst ourselves to find out where we each sit on certain things so to speak not saying we would disagree necessarily but you have seven different personalities seven different views yeah I think you know I don't speak a lot but I think some of you might be surprised I have some more extreme views than maybe some of you have not too not in a bad way but maybe more like I don't I don't take too far well and and you know I mean [Music] there's I I've heard School boards do different things too you know is it having this type of a work session you know before the board meetings after the board meetings on another different day where it's you know you're not maybe not doing you know boor work per se but okay we have a topic talk we can have a topic to bring up okay well what's going on with Athletics or you know activities or okay let's talk to let's bring in you know Mr View and talk about MCA scores on a more detailed level that's not in front of you know a full board meeting but it's more of a workshop type thing you know I think let's talk about all the things that we don't like that our legisl is pushing down our thr I I mean it's those types of things yeah they're open to the public they're open to the public you know people can come and and you know sit in and everything like that but that's that's possibly an option I mean isn't that kind of what Delano did from districts do a work session before the board meeting so you know they'll maybe go into the recess it's an open meeting so people can attend except problem with people listening to what I have to say I just don't want to break any rules yeah if I say hey Jim Lisa and Heidi do you want to get together can I invite the other three probably not correct correct no you and two others anytime you want you and two others I'm not afraid to come to your house but the work session you could do it in a separate quarters and then come in here to do your main board meeting again that meeting is still open to the public it's just that it's not televised probably and she's taking notes and all that but just a but you can get deeper dive into like you said if you want to do a deeper dive on the MCA scores if you want to have a deeper dive on a specific topic you could do that um in a work session type format is that something we want to consider doing maybe just quarterly to start with or as needed too I mean yeah absolutely and we've done a few over time and you know Clos meetings for negotiation topics and things that we've worked on and and for you know profile of a graduate and our strategic plan we've done that kind of stuff but but you know I think where you're heading Jeff it's it's not for a specific issue per se issue in quotes you know specific topic you know related to the school it's it's more high level yeah 10,000 foot I'm I'm interested to know where you what you all think and what you all feel about how our education system is doing and keep in mind I I am not someone who's going to attack someone else's views like you're entitled to your beliefs you're entitled to your views I'm very libertarian in that way but at this same time I think I don't know if you don't I'll agree with this but our education system is not working as well as it should from where I was as a kid I mean I come my mom was a life lifelong educator and I'm asking my mom for to give me lots of information lately because she's been like an innovator in everything like she loves teaching and loves teaching teachers and I think that is what we have gotten away from personally is that we do not have teachers that want to get kids excited about learning and I personally think that's at the one of the biggest things at the core of ones being um not working as well as it used to be in my opinion so I'm I'm interested what you all think and maybe you have completely different views than me and that's perfectly fine I think we need that right um but it I don't know I personally think it would be a valuable experience for all of us to talk about some of those things and and get deeper deeper into how we think we can fix that and then maybe we can be a school board that you know cuz like I'm sick being treated like Metro School District yeah and having this crap sorry certain things shove down our throats that I and I I I I think our our District's in a unique position too where we are located geographically right you know my my my thing is we're kind of always on that demarcation line if you will between instate and outstate you know we're we're we're right on that cusp cusp of it you know so we get to see both sides well and we're on that Tipping Point of being um close enough to a lot of districts that are have kind of crossed that Center threshold right or wrong one way and or more sandwiched in it uh we have I think our history and our historical values I think don't fit with the way those school districts are going personally but take I'm WR I mean you know it we could have you know a a work session prior to a board meeting or after a board meeting you know where again I don't want to create more no where we do have I'm everyone has three or four questions you know it we did that I think when you guys first came on right a couple years back was it sort of a get to know you I don't remember we did that one time no I don't think it was with us okay I remember we had we like no maybe it was when I first came the board but I remember there was one January meeting it was sort of a get to know you kind of you know whether it was a personal level you know family kids so on so forth or even you know why did you become a school board member you know though that's that's really a big question you know and and how do we move our district forward what are your ideas what are your ideas what are your I mean we can have those discussions you know at that type of and I I like idea of us being like this be data driven right so you know and you can argue if data is how data is cut you know you can swing it any way you want to but I also think like are we hearing that there's a lot of issues that are you know is the community unhappy or when we look at our survey data we're saying you know actually people are pretty happy teachers are pretty happy you know like if there is a a problem then I think we should be discussing all of those viewpoints but I don't don't want my concern is that we'd be bringing problems into our district that we don't actually have and I don't want us to you know address something that isn't impacting us doesn't mean that we shouldn't like be prepared in case it does come into our district but I I just feel like you know I look at the longevity of the teachers that we have things like that where we've got now there's probably some people that have been around too long and and and might need to decide that teaching is no longer their passion but I do think that we've got a lot of good things happening in our district that are not even close to the issues that are in that next tier in sure I completely agree when everyone whenever anyone asks me about our school district and our school board and our superintendent and how things are run I always have nothing but good things to say yeah don't get me wrong I'm not trying to say I want to upset the apple cart and create problems where there's problem not problems already um for sure I like the idea of coming with like there's honestly being on the policy committee I get frustrated you some of you know that right it would be kind of cool to come and say why do sometimes your hands are tied why right and just to seek to understand and how to change yeah that I I would be very intrigued in yeah I I I mean I wouldn't want to do it like in the summer I don't want to do it we just throw that out there yeah cabin sports right you're hosting a new cabin not ready yet well I guess in the summer we could you know do a retreat but I would I would I guess to that point there would be to Deep dive a little bit more I would you know a couple times a year doesn't have to be a lot but I don't think that's a bad I think that's a very good I think curriculum is definitely one where I would like to know more do you think that could be done internally or do you think someone like from msba the executive director of MS if they're willing to come out and facilitate something like that not to say we wouldn't have most the answers locally but if you're looking for more of a a Statewide type of answer you know I see somebody like Kirk schan would be a guy who could answer some of those 10,000 foot view why isn't this happening or why isn't you know those are the kind of things that you'd be interesting if or Terry Marl Terry Marl Heather likes Terry moral as a resource I don't know what that call a lot yeah don't always agree but you know there there would be opportunity there too the other thing too if we ever felt like you know there's Buzz to he's Point there's buzz in the community of certain topics that people are not happy with one thing I've seen done is where you can send out a um an email to all district parents basically saying the board is going to have a listening session and a listening session these are six topics that we've heard people have some concern potential concern about let's say give us your top three and then we tally those from our survey data and say these are the three topics that the board will address come here to this you know listening session and actually doesn't have to be the whole board I think it's I think it's three it's a quorum plus a superintendent y um could be a part of that and basically it is just that listening you're not necessarily bantering back and forth with the individual if they had a gripe on you know um but you know that's another way to gather feedback well that's data right so that to me is a datadriven approach to seeing if there's an issue and how do we address it or you know getting more information now to your other point though you said I don't want to dig up garbage either are you doing that by saying these are the three things that you're because we're seeing that like if there is stuff that's you know yeah yeah social media or whatever is kind of we're hear we'll hear inklings about stuff so I don't think it's to me it feels like we're being proactive when we do something like that concerned as a board and you're listening and you want to you know absolutely hear from their constituents so that's another option at some point we wanted to do that which to your point Jeff on curriculum I know it's hard because I mean we're on that committee so we get to know a little bit more about it but I know like the state standards drive a lot of it and we really don't get a say on you know like a lot of the Native American stuff that's just the state has decided that that's what we have to do and understood there's not much we part of what I have a problem I know I know yeah I grew up in North Dakota we had all that's what we learned all the time well and and and Jeff maybe you know if if you can come in March is that when the day at the Capal yes absolutely seriously if you can make it work I mean those are the folks that are driving the policies that we have to abide by yeah I know my hband call the governor's office every week just so you guys know every week and I've done on the hill events for for another and it's actually it's pretty cool yeah well and apparently this year there's a a firm going to be setting up all the meetings for us too yeah so we don't even have to reach up it's I don't know I've never been to one so this will be a learning experience too but you know here here straight from the horse's mouth yeah you know it's an opportunity for that but yeah like I think Katy you said our hands are tied in a lot of that stuff you know it's five years ago they were to and that's where stuff like this can make a difference so like I feel like these are the kind of this is the kind of action that we can start taking and it's may seem small now but we can get momentum to drive change by you know getting it on paper by being going to the on the hill events and being active that way I that's the way I think that we drive change like why are these policies all so MH monotonous and repetitive or whatever and or you know why do we have these mandates on curriculum and you know push it sure I think you could integrate some of your stuff Jeff into that local control we were looking I was just gonna say no fence Hunter but I would have a lot different bullet points on local control than stuff about funding but that's I didn't want I didn't want to like dominate the meeting I have some things I'm going to send back get well I already put it in my comments well I mean cuz like to I mean the Native American thing I get because it's it doesn't affect our community as much as say like my sister who works in the Shaka school district and that's I mean to them that's probably a more important part of their curriculum than we would you know consider it so it's but well and and some of some stuff and and now I'm cutting open a vein being you know in in my role I send out stuff for Mr scher's response I send out a survey for legislative priorities I don't hear back from everybody right yeah so y you don't speak up you don't get your seat at the table unfortunately that that's I I'm doing it all anonymously so I don't know what Jim said versus what Jeff said I don't know and I don't care again I didn't I didn't want to open a can of words trying to personally attack you by any means no no it's it's not an attack but it's I kind of feel slighted sometimes too when I'm putting in all the effort and energy to try to improve MH the process you know put together you know taking up all that time just to not to have people put in the same want to I don't know who did it don't care but you know if if we're not all together moving together whoever it is you can't speak up well I think um the other thing that I would say probably to you you said you've been really quiet and I think there's you know after one of the votes are or as we we always have a discussion session and I think it's really important like if there was something that you wanted to make sure you say that or also don't feel like if everybody voted yes and you really feel passionate about something vote I mean we've it's happened before yeah know and and I think we we hav't I think since since we've all been on the board it's been pretty consistent but that does it doesn't have to be that way well I think what I'm hearing from you Jee is that things are going well here it's just state things that my biggest gripes are not with our school district it's that you're unhappy with the way the state is running things it starts higher than that but well governmental yes that's accurate No I mean it it and if we want to have you know try it a couple times this year if we want to have a a a work session a deeper dive into some topics I I'd have no problem setting it up you know whether it's here whether it's at you know the the school district itself whatever wherever we have it finding time for all of us to be there that's right a challenge regardless yeah and only if it's going to be effective and actually change something can it change something unfortunately probably not that's generally why I don't tend to speak up much well again we're back to this yeah that's where that's where it's going to change yeah correct yeah like Hunter said too we're just kind of Dipping our feet into this for the first time legislatively speaking so to your point on uh Friday you know getting representative Harter in here is kind of exciting we tried I think we sent eight letters to eight different area representatives and senators and eight emails and eight emails and and snail mail uh and we've gotten Mr was it three responses I think umer and then we got somebody else said oh just let me know what you want me to push so it's frustrating from the standpoint of we're just not seeing that reaching out on their end to traction saying we hear you we I would like to sit down with you we like to hear some of your issues regarding curriculum or what have you it's just not we're not getting that response so now we're going to go out and start you know coming to the the legislative session and and start being more than Advocate that way too it's just that has been frustrating literally this I mean they do I I am I'm not joking like you can Chris really does call walls' office every week about certain topics and they some of those people actually know him like by name now and they call back if you call a lot I'm not joking so there like truly so if there's something and I think this is something like I get where you're coming from we got to pick up the phone and maybe that's something we start if we're really hot about something M you got to call they have their numbers he I would have thought he would have been more like two or three times a day uh during Co time it was probably two or three times a day but I'm just saying that that's you're there's numbers for a reason and they do respond to that I have seen it so if that's something we want to do I do think this is the way to do it we got to start we got to start going hard and what you're doing on the hill that's big and that's that's kind of why we started with where we're at right we we started started with the with the we started locally between Watertown and mayor righty well how are you guys right you know looking to grow this the cities are you looking to grow the cities what industries are you looking at you know because if you're not building and attracting Talent right you you know you're aging out and your school district is aging down you know we started with that what a year ago two years ago yeah enement conversation and and then we kind of took this legislative side um kind of took it by Bow by the horns right so we started with emails right we hey come on in come on in see the cool things we're doing let's talk about how your decisions in St Paul are affecting us in Watertown mayor right and and we're in a unique position too because some of our legislators we're in multiple yes District too so we have y yes more so than most and and to hear minimal response is it easier to go to them than have them come and that's that everything that I have heard is it's easier to try to bring them in before March if they can come in see your District then in March when you go to the day at the capital they know you right they've been there they can kind of put two and two together and hopefully come up with four so instead of just blindsiding hey you know I I sent the emails to all of them you mailed out the the snail mail copy we right you know we we're we're trying that and if we're getting more responses as we get more responses I may want you know if they're coming in on a Thursday coming in on a Friday whatever yeah please I don't need to be the sole source of failure here you know for for being if I'm not there there's no representation you know so Jeff if you want to meet represent of harder I have no idea who she is you know it it Friday as long as we don't have four of us right guess what it can be three of us and Mr Scher and Mr hennon do a tour this is the cool stuff that we're doing and here's where we're struggling you know and now we have talking points or we'll have talking points are we able to so I know this is just us but what about some of our neighboring districts that might have the exact same thing I would think if you put cars in someone else's it might say more hey we're not the only ones that are having this is my my gut feeling they would get more is 95 % of districts don't do this that that's my and I may be on the low side say 95% because I know Southwest we actually uh did uh last month kind of we did a little uh presentation and we're actually kind of doing the same thing and I thought hey that's great I mean our one of our priorities was busing there's no funding for the kids to come over so we have to pay for that and I'm like I had no idea so that's why I was wondering if we teamed up with other ones or if we kind of mentioned hey what's going on with your districts can we even have sessions and typically what I've heard is that day at the capital from msba is they they promote that right so if you have the same legislator as Delano you know oh you schedule one meeting both you go and talk to them I think that's going to be different this year is my feeling is more individual it's more individually you know with they're going to Jango the calendars out I'm wondering if we can do if it can be a press event to also like if we're doing a tour like hey you guys you can have your press people there or we can call The Herald Journal and they'll come out their official paper I mean I just it's it's may be in the works well and realistically they just want the Press they want the Press but if we can actually make an impact during that time yeah you know I mean I have seen some of the local channels have been doing different stories at you know different districts and stuff they going I just did a bunch of stuff on CDE stuff oh yeah I'm like come to our school we've got and and that's and that's the type of stuff that it's never really been done here before yeah so we're probably biting off more than we can chew this year you know to be honest that that's how I feel this is a good I think this is a good step one it's a great step one you know I mean we went from being out of the pool to right doing the high dive yeah for for all this stuff but and it's trial and error right you know how what what works with different legislators what what's going to work with this document is it going to work is it a value ad you know is our community going to be behind it you know we we might be the seven of us you know are the teachers going to be behind it you know those are things where in a small District right if you ask for public input teacher input parent input it's the same group of some you know the same handful that volunteer for everything that was a lot more to coordinate this year year one from my perspective so you know I kind of took all of her ideas and started here and hopefully it'll continue to grow I mean that's yeah that's what we did this for and and and you know Jeff like like I said we have I have no idea what to expect on Friday sure you know if you're available what time is it up 1:00 Friday to start in the district office and then we'll move our way up to the high schools but you know I mean youve providing her this document even though it's not officially a board approved but hey this is what we're it's what we're working on what we're working on you know these are areas that we need you to kind of help us with help either help us with or give us ideas on how to try to for advocate for it yeah and really just I mean thank her as well I do you have one out of eight that said I'll come on site to visit yeah pretty nice we'll take that and I think she needs to be lotted for that too that's a th% they're they're busy this time here as they ramp up next Monday I think right because if we don't thank them for that they will never come back again exactly yeah yeah you see the do you see the district office yeah make sure we have a t-shirt for her or a pen no way we can get a student to be part of the tour par before you talk policy yeah we've got an hour we got got an hour quickly we're going to walk quickly and uh got it and usually when we make the stops the students are interacting with the individual it's been our experience when we've done those tours is that they're kids are great they're helping answer questions and explaining what they do and yeah so usually Mr Hond does a nice job of positioning students Mr J and yeah they're doing I'm I'm I'm sure I'm assuming it's your three hot spots typically and the the teachers do a nice job of making sure that students who actively participate and do things in those workshops are there to demonstrate answer questions things of that nature so they usually do a pretty nice job absolutely and um my understanding is the Herold Journal will be there on fray nice but but also too you know you guys can Advocate too you know if you wanted to reach out to them saying hey I heard you know our superintendent and board chair sent you guys message have you come and visited us yet oh I you know I mean oh I will it's those types of you know Grassroots that hey that's how things start you know and maybe we make big waves year one but you know what now they know who we are and hey this bill is coming up how is it going to affect you guys I'm going to reach out to my constituents my schools and ask those questions I'll a little ADD but can you send the list of who you instead of me digging because I won't I'll be honest with you if you send me list who you reached out to then I'll do something but I'm not going to go that's just me I don't think I I don't think I blind copied you guys on the letter no I didn't see it n but if you could do that yeah yeah just so we know exactly who you emailed then when's the day at the capital again you know March what March 13 is that sound right I not 17th it's pretty [Laughter] cool high school social studies government teacher Mr sadinski is in the house of or he's in the house so I saw him when I went for Mr que funeral so this is a former teacher he was a former teacher of mine MH that was it is a if you pay attention to msba emails oh it'll be in there I do I read through them I just it's not off the top of my head yes he was the teacher that would always you not to sit in the front row cuz he was a very enthusiastic and a spitter and he was so I'll try to I'll try to look it up and and and send it out I think we can Monday March 10th Monday March 10th 9:00 a.m. it's the Masa and msba Joint day at so it's the superintendence and School Board and only three of us can go or all of us can anybody can go yep yep long as you're not talking School District business during that time don't don't be confined to a group of four talking about school dist I mean I would think if they're setting up appointments we could be divided up into that's usually what they do they would yeah there' be like two or three of us in each one of the meetings that's um can we get the district V to just take this all down there I can drive you I'm a designated driver the party bus party [Applause] bus we now we got your number on speed dial let me clarify speed dial threw upated driver [Applause] March 17th Yeah March 17th and you can't have discussion in the van so it'll be the quietest ride ever because you'll be in a quum yeah none of us will talk let talk about our Super Bowl champions at that time right our spr break CL I remember I remember doing that with Mr wilky when we went down for the in-person training it was like oh yeah you were there too it was like the four of us and I was what do we talk about none of us know anything about kind of weird but yeah it's in St Paul they'll work and there's a like a whole program too they'll have a speaker come in I think they provide lunch even msba or MSA Masa more to come but it's on the 10th so starts at 9:00 a.m. so registration is not there but starting off at the Radison Hotel in St Paul so you have to go to the Radison and then they bust you over to the capital or you Lo to the capital or how does that work I don't I'm a don't know I don't know I don't know how far it is we'll find out yeah more to come but uh yeah like I said I I have you I don't think anybody from our district has ever gone do it you know from from the school board side so I mean it's like that delegate assembly you know we're we're going from Z to 100 you know like I said um you know I I I feel a lot more comfortable you know when you guys are kind of behind and and and wanting to do this as well and it's not just you know me do try to do things in the vacuum because that's not fun and so I I appreciate you guys kind of providing that input and you know speeding up and everything tonight so I think we all support this 100% it's just a matter of what it you know I don't think anything is wrong with what we have at all so I hope that didn't come off but also too you know you can I provided you guys the raw data you know in that link so if if you wanted to kind of go out and read what all of us said do that do that for other ideas as well so but uh anybody have anything else comments questions complaints concerns thank you for doing this honestly I think this is really great work a lot of time in that thank you hopefully change will happen with this so see all right and with that then being said make a motion to adour I'll second motion made by Miss Danielson second by Miss Schultz all those in favor say I I I all oppose nay motion carries uh meeting is adjourned at 7:35 P.M
