And the the kids that are here tonight, there's five of them. I'm going to call them up now. Cameron from Miss Becker's second grade class, come on up here. Weston from Miss Stone's class, Ian from Miss Swann's class, Becket from Miss Gouty's class, and Brooks from Miss Risdale's class. You guys can just line up right here. Okay, then face the audience there. Okay, excellent. Very good. These were also the January students of the month and they were recognized for following the Tiger way um and demonstrating that as role models within the school. And also to tie this together for I love to read month, they each have written an original composition about what the Tiger Way means to them. So we are really focusing on the reading and writing aspect and how important that connection is and they are going to read what they have written for you. So Ian go ahead. The title way includes kindness and that means helping others. The more we show kindness, the more other people will want to be kind. I was also picked for grit. Be grit means not not giving up. Even when things are hard. When I get gets hard, I keep trying. Look for help and work until I get it. The tiger way means trying my best every day. It means making good choices and treating others the way I want to be treated. The title means to me being kind to people respect help other people responsible take care of your friends you know take care of your things be safe don't run in the halls that's what the taway means to The tiger way to me is being responsible, respectful, safe and kind and listening in your classrooms and in PE, art and music too. It also means to be kind to your friends and teachers and also having confidence in yourself. The Tiger Way means a lot to me. It means to be respectful, responsible, safe, and kind. I'm sure there's a lot of Joe's work that is all in potentially all of our houses. So I appreciate um the effort that Joe put in um for the district. Motion carries. Next on the agenda is the administrative reports. First up, Superintendent Shane. >> Yes. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen of the board. I'll be brief this evening. I have three items that I just wanted to share with you. First, an update on the community ed building. I shared with you during the work session of the board meeting. Uh the task force is continuing to prep and plan. Um, we're going to be meeting with our architects here to literally map out a 12 to 16 to 17 month process that will culminate in uh the building of our community building and a new site. Um, and so we're really and and I again just gave a very brief update. I will have more details in March coming up with the schoolboard meeting. But like I said, also is our task force will begin to grow as we get more into the work of preparing and engaging with our community in multiple different ways to get feedback uh with regards to the site. As we all know, our current community building is approaching 100 years old and it's shown its age and we definitely need to transition. So, more to come, but I just wanted to share that with the community as well that we'll be getting our engagement process relatively soon within the next several months. Also, I just wanted to share and I I shared this with a few board members that s serve on the building and grounds committee and it's just another example of our community partnering with the district. Um it was I think u probably several months ago that uh we had an individual that uh represented the youth lacrosse association and they wanted to somewhere on campus wanted to uh put in a practice wall. Evidently I'm not a lacrosse player but a practice wall is very essential for young kids learning how to play lacrosse and building skills. and it's used by older kids as well when they need to just practice on their own and things like that. Originally, the plan was to go within the city park and just see if there was space somewhere in there as is a a community space. Um, as the city park came to construction, uh, they came to the realization that the space that was afforded them in the city park was just a little too small. So, they pivoted back to the district and uh I've instructed in fact I believe um our activities director and our head custodian have met with um individuals from the lacrosse community and I believe we have a site and we just got to get a little bit more details on design and how much how large the scope of the wall is going to be. But um the main thing is again and this is all paid for by the youth lacrosse association which is really cool because it'll benefit the lacrosse players and even members of the community that uh have been lacrosse players in the past or whatever the case may be. So really excited to do that and to be able to be open to make sure that our campus and the only thing that I had that I gave direction to our activities director is that it doesn't impede on any other district activities. So we don't want to take over a field or take over something and we believe we've got a space that's appropriate for them to practice. So again, it's just an opportunity to partner with our youth organizations but also benefit our community and and I think that's a good thing. So just wanted to share that with the board and the and the and the public. And last but not least, we do have I wanted to update the board on the process with the principal um position. Um, we do have identified finalists. The site committee, I really want to thank the site interview committee spent a just about the entire workday interviewing candidates last Friday. Their job was to narrow those candidates down to finalists. We have identified those finalists and so uh they will become public later. Um, I have to contact the finalists first to let them know. So, um, more to come, but we're moving along. next steps in the process is to do some uh some additional interviews and some on-site finalist interviews and tours and meet and greets and things like that. So, just an update there and that concludes my report for this evening. Any other questions, >> Mr. Shane? Next up, our principal's report, Miss Thompson. And Miss Thompson is uh this is her month off as we rotate through and I've been given the uh honor to update the board on the intermediate school. Uh on behalf of Miss Thompson, the the Delano Intermediate sitebased leadership team recently reviewed our fourth action card which focuses on the emergency procedures. That's uh staff continue to report strong confidence in our four key protocols. Secure, hold, evacuate, and lock down. and have appreciated the consistent communication from our building crisis team when updates are needed. In March, we will begin reviewing the 202627 student handbook and we'll bring any recommendations for revisions to the board later on in the spring. Professional development this month continued to center on letters training and curriculum work. staff participating in phase two of the state required redact training attended attended an informational session and will begin coursework this spring with completion expected by spring of 2027. This was an interesting thing. This is the second part the phase 2 teachers that involve intermediate and high school teachers um that are required to do this training. We actually uh we were studying this at the beginning in the fall of the year and we very quickly came to the conclusion because there was a state deadline of June 3027 or July 1 of 2027. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the board and maybe Rachel knows a little bit more about that. They may push that deadline. But I'm very very proud of our staff, our academic lead leadership team. those folks on that team dug in, looked at the options, looked at all of the approved options, and actually we're pivoting and starting mid year, mid this spring. So, we're going to start next month with the training. This did culminate uh with a MOA that I will be bringing to the board probably not until March. Uh the the DTA had to go through that piece too as well. So, um more to come on that, but that's pretty exciting to see that happen. Our MTSS team continued to monitor the effectiveness of our of our intervention programs. In April, students will participate in our second universal social emotional screening using Sabers. February was also a busy month at the intermediate. Highlights include there were conferences and our book fair. The annual fourth grade ice fishing trip finally was able to happen this year. Fourth grade uh fourth grade's visit to Powder Ridge. sixth grade field trip to Skate Place in St. Cloud. Student council hosted a Valentine's happy ma happy mall, excuse me, happy mail uh fundraiser to support the local uh food shelf and our DIS PI family bingo night was a packed house and a great success. Up next, Mr. Voit from the Delano High School. >> [clears throat] >> Good evening, ladies and gentlemen of the board. It's a pleasure to speak with you on behalf of the high school. As you know, I always start with recognitions and we're having a very successful winter season. So, quite a few recognitions today. Uh congratulations to Ka Hinkle. She represented DHS well at the gymnastics meet uh just this past weekend. Uh also this past weekend, Tate Olsen and Jeff Ritter um did well in their section wrestling. So they will be going to state next weekend for wrestling. Um was actually two weekends ago dance team I mentioned they were conference champs there. They went to state took fifth in the kick competition. I believe this is the first time dance does preliminary rounds in the morning and then the finalists make it to the afternoon. So, they made it to the finals, um, finished fifth, and we had two dancers that actually were on the, uh, all state, uh, dance team. Uh, so that was exciting. And then this past weekend also, our boys swim team was, uh, successful at their section meet, section champs. They're headed to state along with a whole, uh, slew of individuals uh, that will be competing as well. So, very successful uh, winter season. Um, our boys hockey team is in section finals right now or section play right now. As is our girls will be starting girls basketball on Wednesday and then finally uh we'll be wrapping up with boys sections here coming up very soon. So, an exciting end to the winter season. In terms of just uh happenings at the high school, we are full in on scheduling and registration. We finished up registration just this morning. and I met with our facilitators to talk through registration counts and planning section um allocations for the different courses. And so they're going to work with their departments to figure out kind of who's teaching which sections and then get those responses back to me so that I can uh work with our counselors to create that schedule. Um as Miss Thompson mentioned in her update uh via Mr. Shane, spring is uh you know handbook review season. Um we'll be doing that through our sitebased leadership team as well. I've already hinted at uh kind of the major change that we'll be taking on this year is our uh in incorporation of artificial intelligence. Um so Jason Monkey is uh and my and myself are leading that AI ad hoc committee. I've also hinted before that we're kind of uh considering a stoplight approach. So that red yellow green of of acceptable uses. our teachers are actually going to be presented with that information here um the first week of March actually next week so that we can start piloting some of those practices for third trimester. Uh I'd like to update you on two action cards uh actually one action card but there's two kind of components to it and that is our data driven decision-making action card. One major component with the data-driven decision-making action card is of course our implementation of edge of climber. Um so our sitebased I'm sorry not sight base our student success team has been um deep in the work of of um you know working through the implementation stages of edge climber and we just have kind of finished up our training on uh thresholds in the early warning system. So a key component for the high school level specifically with MTSS is establishing an early warning system. And this is looking at the data the different data components specifically attendance behavior and then academic grades and compiling the early warning system to flag students that need our assistance. Um obviously students have a variety of teachers throughout the course of the day and so um being that students see so many different teachers you need systems in place to um you know come to the attention of the student success team. It's not likely that any one teacher is going to think to bring one of you know 150 students. So we need the early warning system that is now built and developed and we're kind of working through sort of the initial uh steps of that. When we did the initial run of our early warning system, um we were uh happy to see that only about four to six students were flagged as high risk in all three of those categories. And even more um um reassuring was the fact that all six of those students have already been sort of flagged and we're we're working towards supporting them in a variety of ways. That could be through our compass program. It could be through special education or some other uh support supportive intervention. So the good news is is we've been identifying the right kids um all along. Now our our effort is going to be how are we supporting those kids and are we kind of implementing uh the right programs with fidelity. So that's component number one with respect to data driven decision-making. Component number two is just the work that we've been doing ongoing through our early releases. And um starting since November, we've been really sort of employing a choose your own adventure style of early release trainings. And what that means is that uh teachers have been given a menu of options all related of course to datadriven decision-m so that they can continuously improve their work in whichever discipline um they serve. And so our teachers are doing a variety of things. Uh some of those things include unpacking their standards, aligning and uh analyzing common assessments. We've done some vertical teaming. Um I think Miss Thompson in her report, she mentioned the work of our language arts team. Yes, we've um begun or at least kicked off phase two of Redact, but the second part of that afternoon was spent vertically aligning our morphology curriculum and kind of what we're doing to um continue to develop students reading skills. And then obviously we have some teams that are doing some curriculum review as well as curriculum adoption. Believe it or not, trimester 3 ends next week and we are uh embarking on hiring season. >> Oh, it's trimester 2. >> Trimester 2. You're right. I wrote trimester 3. That really scary. Trimester 2. That's scary enough as it is. Trimester 2 ends next week. Trimester 3 begins uh obviously immediately after that. Um, but yeah, it's amazing how fast the year is going. Um, and like I said, hiring season is right around the corner. Uh, thank you for recognizing the work of Mr. Finn, who's retiring now after so many years of service. Thanks to him for all of his, um, contributions to Delano schools and Delano students. So, um, thanks again for that recognition. But that's the entirety of my update for you all. Uh, pleasure to be here on behalf of the elementary school. How cute were those kids? Oh, so proud. Um, I did want to mention there were three others that were not able to attend before I get going on my report. Um, Aiden from Miss Kurt, Elliot from Miss Leman, and then Ally from Miss Williams class. So, it was wonderful to have the families here to support them as well. And they handwrote all of those things. It was just so wonderful. So lovely to have them. Thank you again for welcoming them here. For the elementary sightbased leadership team, we are working on handbook revisions as echoed by um the other two buildings. Um we are also starting a lot of our MCA planning. there's a lot of just sort of like meetings and preparations and things that and scheduling and organizing small groups. So, we're working on that in addition to starting our class creator um schedules and planning for the upcoming year. Um that all there's a lot of times that the teachers need to come together to kind of connect on like making sure the classes for the upcoming years are balanced. So, that work starts early. So, we're working on those items. And then um we are also teachers will be doing the second round of the saber screener in March. Summer school is we are beginning those phases um getting staff solidified and um focusing on maintaining gains met during the school year not closing the gap. Um so we want to increase the skills and that but there's only 16 half days um of summer school. So, that's always something we always want to make sure that we have in the back of our mind. Um, that it's just for that maintaining and keeping some of that consistency. A kindergarten update for you tonight. Um, we have about 134 kindergarteners based on initial responses to our survey. Um, last year at this time we had about 140. Um so we have our openhouse um model that I described a little bit earlier where there'll be some time for the families to see kindergarten classrooms along with meet with any staff from a variety of our other resources available. That is next Tuesday. Um and then over the summer we always get in um more kindergarten families as well. So I'm feeling good about where we are at right now. And then um you are all welcome to attend um next Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 and come on up to the elementary school if you'd like to meet some of our incoming families. I would like to wrap up the report by just highlighting some celebrations and successes within our building. Um our PBIS committee is um really being intentional this year on creating monthly staff boosts just to kind of bring some staff morale to the forefront. Whether it be just kind of the snack cart um or a bingo board, whatever it is, we did a pancakes and PD um breakfast the day that we had our Martin Luther King Day. So um myself and our PD committee in addition to our PBIS committee cooked pancakes and sausage and had coffee and hot cocoa for the staff before they kind of dug into all of their um activities. Our two FIED teachers put together an active staff meeting at our last staff meeting. So then people wore comfy clothes and then we played a a game together in the gym. So they're just being really intentional about that time to make sure that we remember like we're humans. We need that connection with each other and ourselves because the the days are filled with a lot of other things. So it's nice to have those um monthly things to look forward to. Uh, Miss Wo is our building Q comp advisor and she recently shared with me our um kind of the midyear checks on our PLC goals and just reading through those, it's really evident that the teachers during that comp PLC time um are spending that on goals that are relevant not only to the work that they're doing, but what is going to impact students the most. So, shout out to our LPC's um of our QC comp groups and our building advisor. And then, uh two [clears throat] last things. We had 98% in attendance for conferences. So, that is 670 out of 687 families that were in person in our schools. So, um love love that we have that great attendance for conferences. It really makes a difference with those foundational skills and those connections. And that was also tied to the last highlight which was the book fair and showing off our media center. So we used our fundraiser money this year to revamp um the media center. So that was really fun to showcase during conference nights with such high attendance. And the book fair was booming and just busy non-stop. So thank you to Jenna Verhe and Miss York for for their efforts there. That concludes my report. Do you have any questions, comments? Um, thank you for allowing me to speak this evening on behalf of our district office. Um, we're about 58% of the way through the year, but of course we're more of a September through August kind of time frame. So if you look at our expenses and revenues that we've gone along, we're about 36 37% through. And that's pretty typical as we get through the year. A big p portion of our expenses for the teaching staff happens in July and August. So we're always just a little behind when you look at percentages compared to our actual years of or months of service. If you flip through to the financial update piece, we've got um a little update from MDE. So we had been figuring that our inflation factor for GenEd aid for FY27 was going to be a 6.8 8 2.68%. It actually is 2.69% which is an extra dollar. So next year it's going to be 7,683 per student. We had been budgeting 7,682. Preliminary compensatory revenue figures were down a little bit um compared to what we were this year. They're looking at a little under 155,000 we were which is about $17,000 less than we are this year. But they also there's one statewide factor that hasn't been put in there yet and that's a legislative portion. They so they said our numbers will go up. They just can't tell us how much it's going to go up at this point. But so I'm expecting that to to increase a bit. Um there's also another piece that comes into play that may happen at the legislative level. There are school districts that are seeing significant decreases because they not only have the direct certified numbers, which is all they're looking at going forward in FY27, but they would have had a lar large number of families that would have um submitted applications for educational benefits, which is your free and reduced applications, which are used to offset, you know, possible decreases in fees for ECF, preschool, um athletic type fees. and going forward into FY27, those are no longer going to be looked at. So, some districts are really seeing a decrease in their compensatory revenue. So, that may still change at the legislative le level, but we're not sure at this point in time if anything's going to change. But for us, that's not a big change for Delano. So, I still think we're going to be between the 155 171 area that we're at this year. So I don't see any huge changes coming forward for Delano in that area. So still I have not worked much further on the budget for FY27 yet. That's a work in progress, but I'll hopefully have more of an update next month or next month is going to come quick. It's a short month for getting things ready. So any questions? Thank you, Mary. All right. Next on the agenda is community ed. It's Abby White. >> Evening. >> Well, hi everyone. We're going to talk a little bit about community ed. Um so tonight we had art at Dairy Queen. So there was a group of us at Dairy Queen looking for all the preschoolers. And you know that's always our goal to sugar them up and send them home. But it was fun to watch them get excited about the art that they've done and showcase that. And it was kind of a dual strategy move. Number one, to validate and and say hello to those preschoolers outside of the outside of the classroom. It's amazing that they look at you and they're like, "I think I know you, but you're out of context." Um, but also, we are in the midst of preschool registration. And so any and all families that we can tell our story to and we can share why DPS is an amazing place for preschool is a great opportunity. So, um, we had the had the ability to have a blizzard before we came here tonight or before I came here. So, uh, like I just said, DPS fall registration is open. We currently have 88 registered students. Um, ideally we will have about 120. We have room for 154. So, um, we have some room to grow, but we know that especially within our threes and fours, uh, children, a lot of parents are still deciding whether or not to send them. And, you know, right now to September for a three-year-old is a huge learning curve. Um, we ask that all of our incoming three-year-olds are potty trained, and sometimes that's still a work in progress. So, we know that we have room to grow, but we're looking to establish whatever relationships we can. We have another open house this Thursday. So, um, the one that we had at the end of January was fantastic that people got to come in and meet and see and greet and similar to a kindergarten open house, we're going to do that again on on Thursday. So, we're looking forward to that. We also have conferences coming up right around the corner. So, those will be early March. And that's always a an awesome time to connect with families and show where, you know, the fall was to where we are now. And you know, I was talking to one of our our teachers teachers, Miss Hall, and I said, "Do you have anybody coming back next year?" And she's like, "No, they're all going to kindergarten." So, um, it's a pretty it's pretty special time of year where you get to celebrate those kids and wish them well. And then every year after that, we're like, "Holy buckets, you grew a whole head." Um, it's it's fun. For summer, uh, Tiger Kids Club, we are open for registration. We currently have 176 K through 6 and 39 preK. So about 215 students signed up for summer care. Uh thus far we have some opportunity to grow, but that gets real that you know we probably won't be accepting registrations for very much longer. Just trying to figure out how all the groups work together and um for staffing purposes. So, uh, we're excited that it is going to be another great summer that we're going to be out of the community building, which means we provide some transportation back and forth to the high school and middle school so that or sorry, to the to the high school primarily so that all of our students can participate in community programs. Um, we're also open for fall. We have approximately 130 students registered already for next fall. We always appreciate those parents that plan ahead and that helps us uh plan also. Um, early childhood screening is something that you've heard me talk about for the last several months and it's one of our action cards that we're really trying to work on. Um, we have been, you know, really putting our heads together to try and see what we can do with that program and how we can grow it and how we can meet student needs. Right now, we have 76 potential kindergarten students, so kindergarten aged, but not necessarily sure if they're going to kindergarten, where they're going to kindergarten. Some of them we're not sure if they're still in the district, but we have a list of 76 potential kindergarteners um for fall that would still need to be screened or or that we're hoping to get screened. We also have of our current 88 preschoolers, 15 of them are screened. So, we have about 150 kids that we are hoping to screen sooner than later. So, part of that has been uh pushing our creativity a little bit. So, we've we've extended some days for our screening times. Traditionally, it's been like 8:00 to 11:30. We're looking at going from 8 to 2. We've got some Saturdays in there. We're adding a couple days. We've added a screener. We've kind of changed up how we do our health and development portions. All of this to try and create as many opportunities to tell the story for parents that regardless of where you choose to go to kindergarten, we want all kids to be screened because that's what's best for those 3 to 5 year olds. So, um we're also looking at ahead to 26 27 and trying to be even more creative. And one of those ways would be lining it up with our preschool conferences. You're coming for a conference. Let's also do the screening. Our goal is to change this narrative a little bit so that all incoming kid or all incoming preschoolers are screened by the winter. We want to get that. Let's just get it done. It also helps our teachers have more information the sooner we can give that to them. Um it also helps us with our with our planning. We want to have those very last sessions before the end of school reserved for those that are that are just on the cusp of uh kindergarten versus trying to get a huge a huge sum through. So, we're excited about the work that we've been doing, the opportunities that we're providing. Um we're also going to we're going to go out and meet some of our other um you know partners in the community. We're going to go to Joyful Hearts. We're going to go to we're trying to go to St. Max. We're going to go to Big Woods. we're we're going to go out to Mount Olive and say it here again, regardless of where you choose to go to school, we are partners and it's about the kids. So, we're excited about that and just to share that we want to be a good partner and we want to see what opportunities we can provide. So, um that's coming up uh next week. Also, uh, with our winter planning almost done and our summer coming on board, we are excited that we're going to partner with the Delano Education Foundation and promote their adult prom by providing registration services. So, if you're looking to go to prom on May 1st, you can register through community ed. Um, and then, yeah, our our brochure, I'll close with our brochure for summer is going to come out early to midappril. So, I know parents are and families are starting to get excited about planning for their summer and vacations and camps and all the things. So, that'll be out sooner than later. This month, we had some exciting sports achievements that Mr. Voit mentioned. Now, as we get further into the season, we're excited for some more section games. In addition to this, Alexis Zenz and I participated on the principal interview team to represent the student voice. And high school students will be going down to the inter the elementary school to help with the tiger fun fair in March. And for the intermediate and elementary, as you saw, it February's I Love to Read Month. Now, unfortunately, I don't have any students coming in to read you. I know it's probably a bit disappointment. [laughter] Um, but high school students had the opportunity uh to go and read in classrooms. And I think I've said this before, but high school students just really really do value the opportunity to go and interact with the intermediate school and elementary students and see siblings and cousins and know siblings of friends. And I have a little slideshow of some pictures for you. Well, there's a selfie. [clears throat] >> This was really interesting. So, I had I reached out to the principles of both schools and asked if they could send if they could have teachers send me pictures. And Miss Ding mentioned um I do want to say that I'm so grateful to the ladies from the speech team that read to my class. They were high energy, engaged, and students participating and having a good time. So, it's really cool to get that feedback. I didn't ask for any sort of like comments or anything, but she just included that in her email with the pictures. So, you can tell students, teachers, and like everyone involved in the I Love to Read Month activities. It's really It's really a great time. There's a few more pictures. So, not much business happening um there except for the typical things that we do at our organizational meeting. I will say that one thing that we learned about was one of our member boards had a retreat at the ed center in Howard Lake and then got a tour of that building and learned more about the programs there. So if we were ever interested in that um we could coordinate with Matt and Melissa Hansen the um executive director of MASO would be very happy to host us and um let us know more about the programs at the EP center.
