The Brooklyn Park City Council adopted a new immigration policy and approved zoning code updates during its Monday meeting, while also conducting interviews for more than 20 commission applicants.

The council unanimously approved a resolution establishing policy regarding employee authority in immigration matters. The policy clarifies that city staff will not inquire about immigration status except when required by law, and focuses on ensuring all residents feel safe accessing city services. City Manager Jay Strobel said the policy aims to allow the city to conduct its business effectively while serving all residents.

Council members also approved on first reading amendments to the city's zoning code, including new minimum floor area ratio requirements for mixed-use developments. Planning Director Paul Magush said the changes address technical errors found after last year's major zoning code overhaul and extend floor area ratio minimums to transit-oriented development districts along the planned Blue Line extension.

The meeting featured interviews with approximately 24 applicants for various city commissions, including budget advisory, community long-range improvement, human rights, planning, and parks and recreation commissions. The council will announce appointments in two weeks.

Mayor Lisa Winston concluded the meeting with extensive remarks defending the city's development plans after neighboring cities Maple Grove and Champlin sent a letter expressing concerns about proposed density along their borders. Winston said Brooklyn Park will make its own decisions about development to address residents' requests for lower property taxes, more retail and restaurants, and economic growth.
