[0:00] I say a little thank you every time I [0:02] walk by it because it came from our [0:04] first building and it was saved notice [0:06] the anchor on it there's an ad uh from [0:10] 1947 just after it opens talking about [0:13] the minaka room and by the way when you [0:16] walk in the mun in the very front [0:18] entrance have you ever noticed that the [0:20] wall is kind of wavy and painted blue [0:23] well it's wavy because of waves but it's [0:26] blue in honor of the first mun because [0:28] the one wall was blue in the first mun [0:31] so in case you didn't know that kind of [0:33] another little fun piece [0:36] right I did find a couple ads that the [0:38] mun ran toward the end of the year of [0:41] 1947 the one on the left is right around [0:43] Thanksgiving saying we'll be closed on [0:45] Thanksgiving but the liquor store is [0:46] open until 10:00 the one on the right is [0:48] just talking about come and celebrate [0:50] Christmas and of course big in the 40s [0:52] and 50s around the holidays was Tom and [0:54] Jerry's so that's mentioned in both [0:56] those ads and I won't ask you but maybe [0:59] I'll ask you you don't have to answer [1:00] how many of you still have a Tom and [1:02] Jerry set at [1:04] home how many of you have [1:08] two I knew it I knew I I knew I had [1:11] friends okay here's probably the most [1:15] popular picture that we've ever used [1:16] about the mun gives you a great idea of [1:19] where it was the theater was is that a [1:21] jewelry store the municipal uh the sign [1:24] in the window actually says on sale [1:26] which you may or may not be able to read [1:28] and it stood in this location until uh [1:31] 1967 and if you have seen the uh cans of [1:36] beer that our current mun had produced [1:38] for their 75th there's a custom label [1:40] that they had made and you'll recognize [1:42] this picture incorporated as part of [1:44] that label cuz uh I gave that to Jeff [1:47] down at the mun to use to help create [1:49] their their label off of so if you [1:51] haven't seen those cans of beer you [1:53] better go down and buy [1:56] some okay a quick little trip just a [1:58] couple uh Street scen just to kind of [2:01] again thinking about y z in 1947 and [2:03] just how much the town has changed so [2:05] here we're looking westand Li and lumber [2:08] the big building on the right side of [2:09] the street look at how wide the street [2:11] is and the cars and the parking and just [2:13] on the other side of the railing of [2:15] course would be the railroad and and the [2:18] lake still looking West get a great [2:21] sense of the style of cars of the day [2:24] and there's that Gibbs Hardware building [2:26] that I pointed out in the previous photo [2:28] and then just beyond it um is the [2:32] mun and this is one of our favorite [2:35] photos uh those of us especially Sue and [2:37] myself in the archives because it's the [2:40] West end of town and such a great [2:41] picture of the buildings and the [2:43] building on the far left is Dr [2:45] martinson's clinic and the building next [2:46] to it's the old drugstore and they're [2:48] the location of y z blue condos today [2:51] the building next to that is the bank [2:53] with the four columns and pedet and [2:54] Kaiser grocery next to that those have [2:57] recently been torn down but the new and [2:59] built has uh the facade of the bank has [3:01] been um recreated the next building uh [3:05] you can kind of see the peaks of it is [3:06] the rer Ford motors and then the [3:09] building next to that is the Village [3:12] Hall well remember there were three [3:14] needs that wetta had and we talked about [3:16] the school and now I want to just [3:17] mention quickly about the fire [3:19] department so we wanted a new fire [3:21] department facility and so what they end [3:24] up doing is building a new fire [3:26] department uh in the uh office Mill [3:30] Street so now to make sure everybody's [3:32] clear Mill Street is that street that [3:33] you pass that goes in front of the [3:35] current day Muni takes you all the way [3:36] down to the new parking ramp right so [3:39] that's called Mill Street so if you [3:41] think back to where uh where things were [3:43] before all the new building was there's [3:46] a map in the upper leftand corner the [3:48] building in the far upper leftand corner [3:50] of that map is the old Oddfellows Hall [3:53] that's now Grocer's table the building [3:56] next to it was the Gold Mine Antiques [3:59] and that's you know kind of part of [4:00] grocery table's outdoor area and that [4:03] Lululemon and the building in the far [4:05] lower corner on the left side of that [4:07] map is now [4:09] cheel so I guess I didn't use the best [4:12] color I used yellow and it doesn't show [4:14] up very well but can you see the [4:16] rectangular building kind of in the [4:17] middle that I outlined in yellow so it [4:20] says Ice House on it guess what kind of [4:22] a business ice house is it's not a [4:25] restaurant it's not what you think it's [4:28] the ice house used for storage storage [4:30] for the blocks of ice harvested off of [4:32] lake minona and we Bay by our we [4:35] residents right so they're stored in the [4:37] ice house now a lot of this uh block was [4:41] burned and severely damaged in 1926 in [4:44] the fire including the ice house when I [4:47] talked with Paul CLA about the uh [4:50] evolution of the fire department with [4:52] regard to this mun program what he said [4:55] was that the new Fire Department was [4:57] built in 1949 it was built on the [4:59] foundation of the ice house so that's [5:02] why I pulled that map in and showed you [5:04] where that location was picture in the [5:06] lower right shows you the front of that [5:08] um fire department and it's [5:11] now kind of the square still it still [5:15] looks like this it's just that it's not [5:18] a fire department obviously anymore and [5:20] it's kind of to the uh left or to the [5:22] east on the alleyway side of josephina's [5:26] restaurant now was bellor before that [5:30] was blueo before that it was louet so if [5:33] you think about that outside eating area [5:35] it's just to the left of that and if you [5:38] look at it today it still looks like [5:40] this you can tell it's still the same [5:43] building so that becomes the new home of [5:45] the fire [5:47] department well now uh Colonial Square [5:50] has been built and open by [5:52] 1958 and why Isa says hey we have a [5:55] great idea let's open a second Municipal [5:58] liquor store and create One-Stop [6:00] shopping go to Colonial Square get your [6:02] groceries at Red Owl go a couple doors [6:05] down and get a bottle of wine for dinner [6:07] so they decide to open the second [6:09] Municipal store they open it up in [6:12] Colonial [6:13] Square and there's a picture of it in [6:16] the upper left the arrow is pointing and [6:19] guess what it says just like down on [6:21] Lake Street Liquors one word again [6:24] that's it anybody here actually remember [6:28] when that was there cuz nobody does it [6:32] was there from 1960 to [6:35] 1977 so [6:38] anyways uh 3 weeks ago I took a picture [6:41] that's the lower right standing in the [6:43] parking lot of the bank Walgreens across [6:45] the parking lot across the street and I [6:47] put an arrow in in the same location of [6:50] where that would location would have [6:52] been today it's kind of by uh Sport [6:54] Clips and party Safari area so that [6:58] remained until [7:01] 1977 well now it's time for the [7:04] municipal mun as we love to call it to [7:07] get bigger and kind of expand so it's [7:10] going to leave its location on Lake [7:11] Street and it's going to move down to [7:13] wetta uh bay shopping [7:15] center and so we've got a picture of [7:18] some construction of it being built uh [7:21] an end result of the liquor store [7:23] entrance and a couple of articles that I [7:25] put in there on the left and it's now [7:27] going to be called the Town Tavern [7:30] and it's going to be there until 2006 or [7:33] so and it's going to include a liquor [7:36] store that has a wine shop that's [7:38] designed to look like the inside of a [7:40] wine [7:42] barrel and it's going to have two bars [7:46] and it's going to have a combined [7:47] seating of 160 people now sadly like [7:51] with the first mun there's not a single [7:54] photo of the inside of this part of its [7:57] Evolution however I did find again [8:01] really great [8:02] description so they created two bars in [8:05] a liquor store one bar was called the [8:08] working man's bar or referred to at [8:10] least as the working man's bar the other [8:12] was the bar/lounge and then there was a [8:15] liquor store so I talked to a lot of [8:18] people to try and understand what this [8:20] was like and putting everybody's answers [8:23] together here's what I've come up [8:26] with so these two bars were connected [8:29] together so that one bar served both of [8:33] them so the bartenders worked both sides [8:36] of the bar okay and the working man's [8:40] bar was designed to be kind of a casual [8:42] drop in have a beer kind of a thing and [8:45] then the other one was a little more [8:47] fancy the working man's bar side had [8:50] vinyl tiles on the floor interestingly [8:52] everybody remember that part and dark [8:55] wood paneling on the [8:56] walls and it's described in the [8:59] newspaper paper is having a bit of an [9:01] English pub look people weren't so sure [9:04] they kind of agreed with that but it had [9:06] one color TV on the wall and it had a [9:09] large juk box and there were speakers [9:12] for the Juke Box in both [9:15] bars the other bar/ Lounge also had dark [9:19] wood paneling on the bottom of the walls [9:22] it had Red Suede wallpaper on the top [9:25] half of the walls and a wooden X that [9:28] crossed in each [9:30] panel and it had a tile floor instead of [9:34] a vinyl [9:35] floor it had decorative cone-shaped [9:38] bronze light fixtures above each [9:41] booth and it had a color TV on the wall [9:46] and each Booth had a selection box where [9:50] they could play music from the juke box [9:52] which was located in the other bar but [9:54] remember there were speakers on both [9:57] sides so that's the best that I was able [10:01] to put together from newspaper and [10:03] people's memories a little bit about [10:05] that first iteration at the wetta bay [10:09] center then it was remodeled in [10:12] 1986 so now we're maybe getting to where [10:15] a few more of us might recognize it so [10:18] here's uh from the archives a picture of [10:21] the liquor store these are pictures I [10:24] took the week that it was going to be [10:25] torn down so that's why they're in color [10:27] so all the colored pictures to comeing [10:29] up our pictures that that I took the [10:31] black and white ones were pictures from [10:32] our archives um who remembers the [10:34] artwork above the door if you didn't I [10:37] made sure to put that picture in there [10:39] and then also the kind of garden trellis [10:41] artwork behind the cash [10:44] register here's the uh rest of the mun [10:47] or the mun itself with those arched [10:50] curved windows and again a picture that [10:52] I took in the lower right and then the [10:55] wetta bar and grill so it goes through [10:57] some different names it's town Tavern [11:00] and then it's called portol beastro for [11:02] a while remember that I'm seeing some [11:05] heads nood and then as we know it today [11:08] still at wi that the bar and [11:10] grill so here's a lovely picture of the [11:14] bar and uh notice at the top of the bar [11:18] there's a kind of like a little port [11:19] hole idea those were saved and are in [11:23] the new mun if you've never noticed [11:26] those you're all going to need to be [11:28] taken to tour of the new mun aren't [11:30] you and uh a picture I took again the [11:33] week that it's going to be torn down and [11:35] the port hole if you remember that [11:38] that's also in the new mun when you walk [11:40] in it's right in front of you on the [11:41] wall just above the Blue Wave that port [11:44] hole has been um installed [11:47] there and there's the pull tab [11:50] booth and I took the other picture [11:53] you're kind of thinking wow your camera [11:54] wasn't aim very well you really got [11:56] mostly floor I did that purposefully [11:59] because when Gina and I talked about the [12:01] new mun she said I'm really hoping to [12:03] duplicate the tile floor so I when I [12:06] took my picture I thought oh I got to [12:07] take a picture of that floor and see if [12:09] that [12:10] happens and then this is that little [12:12] raised kind of Terrace area and uh kind [12:16] of its colors and then I thought well [12:18] that's the only picture I have with Chad [12:20] and Gina but in case people remember [12:22] them they were the managers of the mun [12:23] when it first uh moved to the new [12:26] location as well as uh for a few years [12:28] in the old location [12:31] so now it's going to be time for that [12:32] mun to think about moving so it's [12:36] 2006 there's an article in the [12:38] Minneapolis Star that talks about that [12:40] it's going to be moving out of wetta bay [12:41] center it's going to be moving across [12:43] the street I uh went down and took a [12:46] couple pictures while it was being built [12:48] so there's the outside about to [12:51] be there's the inside with the bar and [12:55] the um I was very excited when I saw [12:58] this cuz I knew that the ceiling above [13:00] the bar was going to be kind of that you [13:02] know oldfashioned tin ceiling [13:05] look and look there's our floor so the [13:08] new floor and the old [13:11] floor and then you probably recognize [13:14] this as we're looking through the big [13:15] doorway under the exit side going into [13:17] the hallway and the and the liquor store [13:18] across the way and the second doorway on [13:21] the right is the uh entrance to the [13:25] restrooms so we decided to do something [13:28] when the mun was about to move [13:31] um historically when five swans moved [13:36] there was a gathering of five swans [13:38] customers and they said we're going to [13:40] help carry everything to the new place [13:42] so people gathered at five swans and [13:44] carried things to the new place so we [13:45] said well that'd be kind of fun let's do [13:47] that we don't have anything to carry but [13:49] let's just gather everybody in the old [13:51] mun location and walk across the street [13:53] together and celebrate with open doors [13:55] and arms the new lo location so this is [13:58] all of us gathering in the parking lot [14:00] of the old mun and uh Gina if you [14:03] remember Gina Holman she's getting ready [14:05] with her little megaphone to direct us [14:07] all across the street and uh another [14:11] picture of the crowd Gathering we had [14:13] quite a few people that gathered and we [14:15] walked across the street and greeted our [14:17] new mun so here's a couple pictures that [14:20] I took of the outside of the new mun [14:23] should be something very familiar to you [14:24] at this point so why that a bar and [14:27] grill why that a wine and spirits is of [14:29] of course the name of the liquor store [14:31] portion there is that blue wavy wall [14:33] that I mentioned there's the port hole [14:36] and walking inside the front [14:39] entrance here's in the liquor store the [14:41] I took a picture of the
