The Wayzata City Council swore in three members Tuesday evening, including new Mayor Andrew Mullen, along with returning council members Ken Sorenson and Alex Pleus for their new terms.

The council approved 2025 appointments and assignments, including committee representatives and city-appointed positions. Mayor Mullen will serve on the Fire Relief Board of Trustees, while council members were assigned to various committees including the Panaway partnership team and public art steering committee.

Council members also approved legislative priorities for 2025, including a $15 million bonding request for capital improvements to Panaway, Klapprich Park, Shaver Park and public safety facility design. The priorities include advocating for a local option food and beverage sales tax and seeking more local control over fines and fees for nuisances such as noise violations and e-bike infractions.

In a related action, the council adopted cannabis business regulations through a second reading of ordinance 845. The ordinance establishes local regulatory framework for cannabis retail, delivery and manufacturing businesses, with conservative zoning restrictions limiting locations to areas along Wayzata Boulevard and Highway 12.

The council also decided to cease exploring municipal cannabis operations following an earlier workshop discussion. City Manager Jeff Dahl said the council reached unanimous consensus to put that exploration on hold indefinitely and stop expending resources on the feasibility study.
