Wayzata Council Approves Golf Course Tree Exemption, Lamborghini Dealership Plan
The Wayzata City Council unanimously approved a complete exemption from the city's tree preservation ordinance for golf courses during their July 1 meeting, while narrowly approving a concept plan for a Lamborghini dealership on Wayzata Boulevard East by a 3-2 vote.
The tree preservation ordinance amendment came after Woodhill Country Club requested relief from requirements that would have cost approximately $100,000 in fees and escrow for their renovation project. The club argued the ordinance, designed for residential development, created safety risks by preventing proactive tree removal on their 195-acre property.
"We've experienced a member fatality from a falling tree, multiple near miss incidents, and just recently had a very large limb fall dangerously close to members," said Brian Edmston, representing Woodhill Country Club. The club maintains 73 acres within Wayzata city limits and sought exemption from an ordinance requiring fees of $300 per inch for tree removal and replacement.
Council members supported the exemption, citing golf courses' proven environmental stewardship and inherent motivation to maintain healthy tree canopies. "Golf courses are kind of a different thing," said Council Member Pleish, noting the clubs have access to professional staff and arborists that residential properties typically lack.
The Lamborghini dealership proposal by Walzer Real Estate LLC would combine two parcels at 1022-1042 Wayzata Boulevard East, requiring four variances and five design deviations. The boutique dealership would sell approximately 50 pre-ordered vehicles annually with minimal inventory on site. Despite concerns about multiple code deviations, three council members supported moving the concept plan forward, with final approval contingent on addressing design standards in future planning phases.
