Cameron Elected Wayzata Planning Commission Chair
The Wayzata Planning Commission elected Blake Cameron as its new chair during Monday's meeting, following the resignation of former Chair Lissa Stockton.
Commissioner Chris Planton, who served as vice chair, will continue in that role for another term. Planton presided over the meeting and thanked Stockton for her years of service to the commission before the leadership vote.
The commission also welcomed new member Joel Van Ly, a Wayzata Highlands resident with a background in electrical and computer engineering and IT consulting. Van Ly said his previous work kept him traveling frequently, but he wanted to engage more with city planning issues after following major local developments including Big Woods and the TCF redevelopment.
Planner Quarrels reported that construction continues on the 920 Wayzata Boulevard residential project at the former Wells Fargo site, with crews currently working on underground parking. Several other development applications are under review but have not yet been deemed complete.
The commission's next meeting scheduled for Jan. 27 has been cancelled due to lack of agenda items. The next meeting will be Feb. 10, which will likely include the annual training workshop for commissioners.

[7:41] commissioner van ly right now after I
[7:43] can I think we can uh new commissioner
[7:46] if you'd like to tell us just a little
[7:47] bit about yourself that would be awesome
[7:50] yeah as as you can see my name is Joe
[7:52] Van I live in the highlands with my wife
[7:54] and my large dog um uh from a bit of
[7:58] History I I uh went to college uh and
[8:02] got a degree in electrical and computer
[8:04] engineering uh went into Consulting
[8:07] right away where I spent better part of
[8:09] 20 25 years um uh doing Contracting
[8:13] between it organizations and big
[8:16] companies uh and then managing some of
[8:19] those it
[8:20] relationships um so that's uh gives you
[8:22] a little history so I did a lot of
[8:24] contract work uh did a lot of it work in
[8:27] my in my day um and a lot of uh uh
[8:31] client satisfaction and in client
[8:33] relationship
[8:36] development anything in particular that
[8:38] Drew you to the Planning
[8:40] Commission you know uh the job that I
[8:42] had uh took me out of town uh at least
[8:45] four days a week um and and uh uh
[8:49] internationally as well so I didn't
[8:50] really have a chance to engage with the
[8:52] city uh uh very often I did on some of
[8:56] the big things the the Big Woods uh the
[8:59] TCF uh
[9:01] Redevelopment uh the uh the Meridian
[9:04] Manor Redevelopment um and and really
[9:07] thought that with my view of of
[9:13] uh uh contracts and how disparaging
[9:18] things might uh might sometimes get
[9:20] resolved uh I thought the Planning
[9:22] Commission might be a good fit wonderful
[9:25] well we're happy to have you
[9:26] commissioner thanks yeah welcome yeah
[9:28] welcome
[9:30] uh next on the agenda is approval of the
[9:33] agenda um are there any updates or items
[9:37] to add to the agenda this
[9:39] evening if not I'd um ask for a motion
[9:43] for approval I'll make a motion to
[9:45] approve the agenda thank you um may I
[9:48] have a second second
[9:50] Cameron any
[9:53] discussion all right all those in favor
[9:55] I I looks like the motion passes and our
[9:58] agenda has has been
[10:01] approved next on the agenda is the
[10:03] approval of the consent agenda uh we
[10:07] have our meeting minutes from December
[10:08] 16th
[10:09] 2024 we have the approv um approval
[10:12] report and recommendation of approval
[10:15] for the zoning text amendments for
[10:17] chapter 909 design standards we have
[10:20] item C approve the report and
[10:22] recommendation of approval for zoning
[10:24] text amendments for chapters 955 which
[10:27] is the r3a district and 920 um which is
[10:31] our parking again are there any
[10:33] questions or comments for staff at this
[10:36] time all right if there are none um I'd
[10:39] ask for a motion of
[10:41] approval move to approve thank you may I
[10:44] have a second second schelby all right
[10:48] any
[10:50] discussion no all right all those in
[10:53] favor I all right the motion passes on
[10:55] our consent agenda um please note that
[10:57] this has been approved um next on our
[11:00] agenda um is the election of the chair
[11:03] and the vice chair um planner corals do
[11:05] you want to walk us through this process
[11:07] or any instructions uh you might have I
[11:10] am happy to uh fairly simple and
[11:12] straightforward there are descriptions
[11:14] included for the chair and vice chair
[11:16] positions in your packet uh in short the
[11:18] chair is uh typically the one running
[11:20] the meetings each week or every two
[11:23] weeks uh they have a lot of interaction
[11:25] with staff we are always there to help
[11:27] along the way but they are the person
[11:29] during the ship at the end of the day
[11:30] and making sure that we're coming to a
[11:32] consensus and keeping order and and
[11:34] managing the public and it can be a big
[11:36] job but we're all here to support each
[11:38] other in it the vice chair has the same
[11:40] duties just when the chair isn't there
[11:42] otherwise they're just uh another member
[11:44] of the Commission in that case typically
[11:47] when we do elections we have uh one
[11:49] member nominate another member for the
[11:51] chair and vice chair positions there can
[11:54] be discussion and then typically there's
[11:56] a vote simple majority means uh that
[11:58] person
[12:00] becomes the chair or vice chair and then
[12:02] if there are competing nominations we'll
[12:04] work that out as a commission
[12:06] so in that case is there anybody who
[12:10] would like to nominate anybody to be
[12:12] chair of the Planning
[12:14] Commission I would like to make a
[12:17] nomination um since he's been on this
[12:20] commission I've been very impressed with
[12:22] his knowledge of wetta and Alo his work
[12:25] on the parks and
[12:27] trails and there therefore I would like
[12:30] to nominate Blake Cameron for the
[12:32] position of uh chair of the Planning
[12:39] Commission how do you
[12:43] feel nominated okay yes all right that's
[12:47] fine yes I I will gladly do it we'll
[12:50] take a vote
[12:52] second are you you you're wanting to
[12:55] step aside you're doing such a good job
[12:58] oh well thank you thank you I think um
[13:01] uh commissioner Cameron would do a great
[13:02] job
[13:04] yeah yeah chair just procedurally I
[13:07] would say that uh commissioner schelby
[13:09] made a nomination and moved uh to
[13:12] appoint commissioner Cameron who
[13:14] accepted that I would just ask for a
[13:16] second and then further discussion and
[13:18] then all those in favor okay um do we do
[13:21] the vice chair at the same time or that
[13:22] be a second at your discretion you don't
[13:24] have to I make sense to confirm the
[13:27] chair first first all right um um so
[13:29] with that motion um do I have a second
[13:31] on commissioner Cameron for chair of the
[13:33] Planning
[13:34] Commission second all right any further
[13:38] discussion all right all those in favor
[13:41] say I I looks like that motion passes
[13:45] congratulations thank you thank you and
[13:48] vice chair planton you could hand the
[13:49] gavl over at this very moment oh but I
[13:51] would suggest you know new chair Cameron
[13:55] would permit you to uh round out the
[13:57] meeting that' be you started this
[13:59] meeting you get okay I'm happy to pass
[14:01] it over um is there anyone interested in
[14:04] the vice chair uh position at this point
[14:06] and is there a motion for anyone for
[14:07] vice
[14:11] chair do you want it you want to do it
[14:14] again I'm happy to do it if no one else
[14:17] will or if no one else anyone else no no
[14:21] okay all right I would nominate uh
[14:23] commissioner planton to be the vice
[14:24] chair okay second uh okay second um any
[14:30] discussion all right all those in favor
[14:33] I I the motion passes and I will
[14:35] continue to be Vice chair thank you
[14:37] Chris all
[14:39] right um with
[14:42] that oh any
[14:45] com there's nothing more to say on that
[14:47] we have Vice chair for next meeting okay
[14:50] we've got that all right um at this time
[14:52] next on our agenda is item number B
[14:55] which is the review of development
[14:57] activities which um um planner waiver or
[15:01] planner quarrels are you going to lead
[15:02] us through
[15:06] that thank you chair um or I share for a
[15:12] couple more minutes uh development
[15:15] activities there's not a lot to report
[15:16] of current activities uh 920 the uh
[15:20] Residential Building at the former um
[15:23] well at the Wells Fargo site is under
[15:25] construction currently working on the
[15:28] Underground Park
[15:30] um be a while before you really see the
[15:33] structure coming up we have received a
[15:36] number of submittal that are currently
[15:38] under review but not deemed complete uh
[15:41] We've review we've uh received a number
[15:44] of building permits that are also under
[15:46] review but have not been improved so uh
[15:49] I expect that we'll have more
[15:50] announcements in the near future but for
[15:52] today uh 420 or sorry 9:20 y Zetta
[15:57] Boulevard is the the main activity
[15:59] happening in town
[16:03] okay next would be our Planning
[16:05] Commission meeting schedule which is
[16:08] attached um this is where our Planning
[16:12] Commission members attend our City
[16:13] Council meetings um and if anyone
[16:15] usually has a conflict we work it out
[16:18] amongst um Commissioners and
[16:20] commissioner Cameron it looks like you
[16:22] are up as soon as tomorrow I am
[16:25] commissioner El I think you're next on
[16:27] the list um for the 21st of
[16:30] January I would uh sorry if I could uh
[16:34] chair yes the Planning Commission
[16:36] meeting on January 27th uh will be
[16:38] cancelled due to agenda items okay and
[16:42] then uh so that makes our next meeting
[16:44] February 10th so our next meeting is
[16:46] February 10th all right I will note for
[16:49] that February 10th meeting it is likely
[16:50] we'll have our annual training workshop
[16:53] on that day so if you're newer to the
[16:55] commission uh which we will have one
[16:57] more person who is at that meeting
[16:59] because we'll have to appoint someone to
[17:00] fill uh Lissa's spot okay uh we'll have
[17:03] that both as a as a way to brush up for
[17:05] everyone but also as a way to uh get our
[17:08] new Commissioners up to speed so that'll
[17:10] likely be that meeting the only other
[17:12] scheduling thing I wanted to note is
[17:13] that I called out uh 1965 as the date
[17:16] that the Planning Commission started at
[17:18] our last meeting I was wrong it was 1944
[17:22] oh my so we're no longer in a
[17:24] significant year for celebrating so if
[17:26] anybody wants to celebrate a healthy
[17:28] almost 81 years of the Planning
[17:30] Commission you are welcome to the
[17:31] minutes are very fun to look at uh but I
[17:34] don't have a 1965 anniversary to
[17:36] celebrate so my apologies for that okay
[17:39] we had our hopes up there for a big
[17:40] shind dig of some sort but all right can
[17:45] I is there a like a process to get a new
[17:48] commissioner like are there people who
[17:50] have applied or yeah that's a great
[17:52] question commissioner so typically uh
[17:54] when we do our annual uh solicitation
[17:56] for applications for all our boards and
[17:58] commission
[17:59] uh we typically have a couple of people
[18:00] at least apply for Planning Commission
[18:02] and not all of them get on uh sometimes
[18:05] uh they're they're on other boards and
[18:07] commissions sometimes they are just you
[18:09] know not quite at their spot in line to
[18:11] get on but we usually draw from that
[18:13] pool uh when we find ourselves with sort
[18:16] of emergency openings to fill now they
[18:18] still have to be appointed by the city
[18:20] council and um we're working on making
[18:22] that appointment happen it'll likely be
[18:24] I think the second meeting in January uh
[18:27] so that's why that February date is
[18:28] probably when our Workshop will happen
[18:31] but they do still have to be appointed
[18:32] and everything by
[18:34] Council and that training Workshop is
[18:36] great for all um Commissioners to brush
[18:39] up on everything um and have our City
[18:42] attorney lead us through um in reminders
[18:44] I think it's always so helpful um so
[18:46] we'll look forward to that training um I
[18:49] guess that is
[18:51] it so um I'm going to ask for a motion
[18:56] for
[18:57] adjournment so moved Cameron all right
[19:00] may I have a second second serson all
[19:03] right any
[19:04] discussion with
[19:09] that all those in favor I with that the
[19:13] motion passes and our meeting's
[19:15] adjourned
