## History
:
According to the Historic Resources Inventory, the building at 227 South Front Street was
constructed in 1966 to serve as Saint Peter’s municipal building, replacing the former city offices
that had operated for several decades out of the fire station at 314 South Third Street.
Before t
he municipal building was constructed, several different structures occupied the site.
The earliest known building at 227 South Front Street was the Saint Peter Roller Mills, built in
1854 by Daniel Birdsall. In the late 1850s or early 1860s, B. F. Pratt purchased the mill and
operated it until his death in 1870. The mill was then acquired by Sackett & Fay, who continued
its operation well into the 20th century.
Another m
ajor structure on the site was the Saint Peter Power House, constructed in 1888.
Described as standing “directly west of the Mill Pond, extending into the hillside,” the Power
House remained in use until its demolition in 1987.
25
Additionally, the City’s light and water department maintained a building at this location prior to
the
construction of the new municipal building.
