area school board meeting for Monday February 10th uh clerk will please call the role thank you director Shaw here director gaggin here chair Anderson here director Bachi here and Kaku is here thank you uh any agenda adjustments for this evening There Are No Agenda adjustments all right announcements comments recognitions uh land acknowledgement will be read by Dr Frank Shaw thank you Roseville area schools acknowledges that we reside on traditional ancestral contemporary and unseated territory of the Dakota people from bot a Confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers a place that Dakota people poetically claim as the center of Earth directly beneath the center of Heaven to Indian mounts Park a sacred place of burial built by ancestors of living people and home to the only known remaining burial mounds within the Minneapolis St Paul Urban core indigenous people have cared for this land through Warfare genocide relocation and removal perpetrated by colonizers the state of Minnesota and the federal government injustices that reduced over 150 million indigenous people to around 300,000 indigenous people have given their blood tears heart resilience and love to this land enduring boarding schools that were in operation from 1879 through the 1930s where assimilation through humiliation was the curriculum and unspeakable atrocities occurred daily to the foster care system where more kids were removed from indigenous ous homes than any other group in Minnesota indigenous people have not lost their culture or identity and still reside on this land Roseville area schools is committed to ensuring the culture of our indulg indigenous relatives the original and rightful caretakers of this land is studied preserved and celebrated we are committed to understanding and honoring the sovereignty that has been denied to nearly 600 indigenous Nations including 11 federally recognized tribes in Minnesota through the B breaking of over 400 treaties and we are committed to the truth of the history of our indigenous relatives the success of our indigenous students and to the healing we hope to create through this commitment thank you very much okay summary of community input received for Action items I have not received anything I I did get a call from someone asking about the agenda it item dealing with the rescheduling of our future board meeting so they asked me a question and I responded should I do that now or wait till the discussion at that agenda item and I can bring it up as part of the discussion have I think bring it up now this is this is the summary of community input okay think go ahead all right so they questioned why we have do all these date changes and specifically why the September or sorry the February 25th one because no primary has yet been scheduled so I explained that um first of all as everyone I think knows we can't meet on any night when there's a primary or an election because presumably it could pull people away from the ability to vote at their own poll um the reason we're meeting tonight for example is because tomorrow is the Ramsey County District 3 election and District 3 includes all of Falcon Heights so we couldn't hold our meeting tomorrow and the new 40b election on March 11th does not interfere but the primary would on February 25th and it is true that as of even half an hour ago when I headed over here there were only one candidate from each major party in the 40b race the filing period does not close until tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. that's right and so there's still theoretically 22 hours or so when someone could file but make it primary necessary so I told this person that in my opinion I think we'd be doing the right thing because we could wait and see if it's necessary but then if it is does become necessary we'd have to call a special election which might be difficult to do because we all have day jobs and it's hard to schedule so just out of prudence we should move the meeting even though there may not be a primary and ultimately it may not have been necessary to move the meeting and then they said well if it's not will you go back and I said no just like we've done in the past if we vote to change the meeting it's going to stay on the change date it will not revert back even if there ends up not needing to be a primary so if anyone else out there had that same question or thought then that's why we'll be voting on that tonight and are likely to move the meeting to a different date thank you thank you director bogesi for that uh summary um moving on to this evening's cons uh consent agenda um I will entertain a motion to move this evening's consent agenda minus retirement uh is there a motion so move okay is there a second second all right uh so for our district so we are so appreciative of all this amazing gifts thank you thank you all right moving on in this evening's agenda our reports and non-action items 6A 2025 26 2026 27 draft school year calendars we welcome associatees superintendent Melissa Sonic and RZ AP Mike Sher all right thank you uh tonight is the first reading of the school year calendars based on recommendations that came from our calendar committee uh just to start the purpose of our calendar committee is to create school year calendar recommendations for the school board to consider our school calendars um our in terms of our work as a committee we believe it should support learning and really reflect our vision of Excellence Innovation and equity in all we do uh I'd like to start by sharing my deep gratitude um for everyone in appreciation for everyone who served on the calendar committee um with me is uh Rous associate principal uh Mike Shader who made probably half a dozen or so options for the calendar committee to consider so a special thank you to Mike uh this evening we have draft s of the 2526 District calendar as well as for the 2526 year round calendar the same is true on both counts for the 2627 um calendar drafts the drafts for the 2627 school year and I think this is important to note those technically remain in draft form until they are approved by the board the following year so they are released and put on our website but they do say draft and that's important to know uh you should all have copies in your board packets and for anyone who is following Along online communities and family members can find them on our website on isd623.org uh so first we'd like to share some of the work um that the calendar committee did this year and just highlight a couple of different things one this year the calendar committee really wrestled with the question what is our philosophical approach to holidays as non-school days and so to help us with this we created a calendar committee holiday rubric that we used and that will continue to use as a guide in the future we created this in partnership with our cultur Liaisons um by considering our top five demographics and then languages to go along with that and we created a list of holidays that we should really be aware of uh the purpose and behind this our goal is to develop a calendar that keeps as many kids in school as possible so based on that process and the rubric that we used at this time will not be adding any additional non-school days that fall on holidays to our camp calendar but this is something that will revisit for future discussions U for the holidays that do fall on school days our practice is that they will be approved as excuse absences for students so with that I'll turn it over to Mike to share a little bit more Yep after uh finding the major holidays we also asked our health office staff what days if any we noticed lower attendance the feedback uh was analyzed and could be categories categorized as holidays weather and breaks that said there were no implications for making changes in the calendar based on the feedback for example the health office uh noticed higher absences in the front and the back end of a break uh but that would be tough to prevent no matter when the brakes fell uh so therefore for the uh Traditional School year calendar there's no big changes from this year's calendar to next year's it would just be moving forward with a very similar schedule however we would like to highlight two proposed change changes for the year round calendar which would impact hor um we'll share the proposed changes as well as the rationale for those changes um this year at harambe there were two three-day weeks in a row right before their fall intercession so that is this is when all the years start to blend together that's the 2425 school year calendar for a number of reasons that created some somewhat difficult weeks in the building and the teacher feedback was they would appreciate more full weeks um which is more cond conducive to teaching and learning so that change was made for the 2526 school year calendar as well as the draft of the 2627 school year calendar making this change does create a bigger discrepancy in the length of days in first semester and second semester but our Educators believe that having more school days before the MCA and less short weeks overall in total outw outweighs the lopsidedness of the semesters and administration agrees I'll also note that balanced um trimester days are more important um for um secondary than it would be at the elementary school uh next we've also noticed a trend with a decline in attendance when the last week of school at harambe is such a short week and so therefore we propose that the students last day will be Friday and then the following Monday would be the teacher Workshop day so with that summary we'll open it up for the questions and any discussion that you might want to have so question so was the the question of short days week just happened that way last week or I I get that's an interesting thing to notice right and how how teachers experience yeah I think it's where like professional development days fell and just kind of how things worked out like grading reporting like I'd have to pull up the 24 25 calendar be specific but it's one of those like those short weeks just got a little choppy also the key difference is um harambe has inter sessions at times when the rest of the district does not so for example um I believe this Friday is a grading at harambe and then they'll start their intercession and we also tried to line up our professional development that is done across the district so they could be included in that work thank you for kind of taking all day into consideration thank you I just wanted to thank the effort to look at holidays um I not just here but also for example in SC scheduling the Raz graduation at first I was wondering why are we doing it on Sunday that's interesting and then I saw that another school district did it on the Saturday and then they had to reschedule it because that's a very significant holy day for a large uh group of our our students and I thought wow it's so impressive that um that kind of forethought and even having a rubric to think about it through it um is just really appreciate that alfer of effort it is a nod to the expertise on the full calendar committee um somebody said to me recently you're only as good as your team um and the team that we have working on this calendar there's folks in this room who could raise their hands as being part of that team as well it's just such a robust team with different um perspectives that I think that's where we catch those like um little things that end up making a big difference yeah greatly appreciate it well done thank you anybody else I'll just double on to that it's not you know in addition to thanking specifically for the holiday consideration just for the work in general do you and the rest of the committee years ago I was a parent rep on a calendar Committee in old emid and no one un understands how horrible it is to try and make a calendar that works and fits and gets all the days in and everything else it's just a mess so in fact you can do it and if you put together what she said like half a many different options first that's like many hours and just struggling and sweating over these little details so please pass our thanks along to all the other folks who are part of this because it is a and I think people understand you got to do it every year because things change it can't be like you just push a button and some computer spits it out you know you have to put thought behind it as in the holiday stuff so thank you very much great thank you Melissa will be staying all right moving on to 6B policy 400 our first reading discussion of acceptable use all right uh so tonight is the first read of policy 400 on acceptable use um there's an addition in the policy draft around AI tools that you might notice um that's to be includ Ed in section 3.2 but the bigger change is a new section of the policy around cell phones um and so I'm going to kind of set the table here with just a little bit of context in 2024 the Minnesota um legislature enacted a law requiring school districts to adopt a policy on student possession and use in of cell phones in schools by March 2025 so we're in compliance with that timeline this law however does not state that school districts must incorporate specific language or Provisions within their school district policy uh there's also guidance that came out from the Minnesota School Board Association that states msba recognizes the common practice of setting forth cell phone rules in a student handbook or similar document this article direct School administration to establish cell phone rules this approach enables administrators to craft flexible and specific rules that are specific to grade levels in building so I think that's important context for everyone to know we have a few things that we'd like to share with the board this evening first we have a draft of the cell phone policy language uh second we have specific cell phone practices for Roseville area schools for both K8 and grades 912 and then we also um took some time to find out what do our students have to say um when our students what do our students have to say regarding the changes and cell phone practices that were implemented starting last fall so let's start with the policy if you go to the new section in uh that section 6.0 it reads the superintendent and School District administration will establish rules and procedures regarding student possession and use of cell phones in schools these rules and procedures will seek to minimize the impact of cell phones on student Behavior mental health and academic attainment those are the three big reasons uh the rules and procedures may be designed for specific school buildings grade levels um and or a similar criteria so what's important about this language that we have drafted in the policy is it keeps the policy at the intent level and then allows Administration to tweak um specifics as needed um so with that we want to share with so them what is our guidance for cell phones for K8 and 912 students um you should have a one-pager uh in front of your spots that looks like this and this is basically our guidance that we created um in partnership with Educators and principles so simply F put for um elementary and middle school so grades K8 it's away for the day and what what we mean by that is cell phones are not allowed during the school day in elementary schools students must check their phones in either to their classroom teacher or the main office in middle school students must keep their cell phones on silent in backpacks or in lockers during school hour hours including passing time and lunch if families were to need to get in hold with students they would do it the same way that that happened when all of us were in school right they call the main office um please note that this policy or this um this guidance also includes cludes airpods SmartWatches any wearable personal electronic device that is capable of sending and receiving messages and phone calls so that is K8 for 9912 simply put it is a time and a place at the beginning of each class students will be required to either place their cell phones in an area provided by the school or store it in their own belongings cell phone use is allowed during passing time at lunch and before and after school and if um folks are curious about the why like what does the research say that's kind of this this next chunk here the benefits are relationships students can connect in real life with their peers and teachers and whom with whom they interact with every day focus without the distraction of devices students can boost their ability to focus and engage and then last is safety it's really limiting social media access during the school day which helps create a more positive learning environment for our school Community uh to create this guidance we use the Minnesota cell phone toolkit uh that was created by the Minnesota Elementary School principes Association in partnership with the Minnesota Association of Secondary School principles the purpose of the toolkit was to really make best practices available to schools on a range of different strategies to really try to achieve the goals of the new cell phone policy um as I mentioned before this was also done in collaboration and really led by our principes and Educators uh with that said let's see what our students have to say regarding the changes of cell phone policies that have been implemented this [Music] fall what was your first reaction to learning about the changes this year with cell phones at Ros um it was kind of like a wow moment like why is this happening why are we having a change within phone policy and it also just learning about why do we have to put our phone our in a bucket instead of our pockets or our bag so you weren't happy about it initially is that a fair statement no I wasn't uh my first reaction was I was a little bit I didn't really like it too much because you know I like having my phone on me I like being able to communicate my friends in school and stuff but you know as it's gone on I've kind of realized it's more important than just being able to be on your phone whenever you want it's like a good life lesson um at first I was pretty shocked and surprised just just because throughout all the years I've been here um it's been kind of loced with the cell phone policy and yeah so it's kind of a big change that is it safe to say you weren't excited about yes I would say I wasn't excited about it um I was very surprised I didn't like it I just like having my phone near me and you know I didn't want to miss any notifications or messages um I will admit I'm a bit of an old soul so I was a little bit happy about it I like thought that there needed to be a stricter policy in the past so I thought it was a good thing I know not everyone had that reaction though all [Music] right so now that we're about 4 months in how has it actually gone um it's gone pretty good at the beginning of the year I think the rules were kind of stricter and like kind of throughout the year it's kind of dialed down a little bit I think so depending on the class and teachers some teachers enforce it and some teachers don't okay I feel like I get more work done without it I feel like it's less it's less of a distraction like you got your you got your music or whatever and that's all you really need you don't got to be on your phone I think it has been um a very impactful piece of my learning this year I think I've been focusing a lot more in class uh I was like really not looking forward to it at the beginning of the year and then now I've kind of it's been a good lesson for me so I say it's better cuz I've been approving on my work M so you didn't you weren't happy about not having your cell phone but it's helped you because you're improving on your work um it's actually gone and better uh I've just been doing my assignments and turning them in and not procras procrastinating yeah it's going all right um me personally honestly I haven't been putting my phone in the bucket be trth about that but um it's been going good I feel like it's bringing more attention to class teachers and work [Music] okay if you were in charge of the cell phone policy or rules at Raz what would you do uh I would keep it the same I think a lot of kids don't like it and I think you know just being like kind of strict almost with the phones would be very good because then it really does help kids learn and talk to others and socialize better it just puts you in a better um place to succeed I'll probably see the people that's approving and doing better I'll probably let them get a chance to get their phon oh and the people that's not really doing good let them keep their phones and stuff in office or something all right interesting so kind of a policy that's responsive to different needs of different students MH yeah okay not a bucket for sure I would have nobody put their phone in a bucket um cuz we had an incident where we had to go on lock down and there were students that couldn't get their phone out of the bucket cuz the teacher would allow to and it's like critical consist critical kind of like situation where you want to be able to text your parents so I just lean towards more just having them leaving their backpack to where they feel more comfortable um I would say it would be very similar but instead of having bins it would be like have you seen those calculator Pockets where it's like a wall and then it has pockets and then each one is a number I would have each student in the class is assigned a pocket and then everybody just has to put their phone and then you can easily scan to see if everyone's is in there um personally I would just enforce it to stay in your backpack and not be on your body which I think is what they've tried to enforced in the past and it has always gone the best but I think having it on us I think for especially emergencies when we had our lockdown I think it's better and we're more comfortable with knowing where it is and if we need to reach at it an emergency week can got it question if this policy was a meal what meal would it be and why um I think it would be spaghetti because it's kind of messy but in the end it tastes good and like it works out peanut butter I'm allergic to peanut butter so like I'm going be allergic to turn my opponent I have to go with something healthy like a healthy salad like I don't want to eat it but uh you just got you just got to get it down oh oh my goodness so with that um we'll open it up for discussion and questions who wants to start well I just want to say that I appreciate how clear it is I mean it's very it's very precise so as a student it's not like you you can't understand it you mean wish to understand it but it it's very clear and you you retain the ability to flex it as needed I mean if there's learning if there's changes needed it's not well let's present it at a board meeting and then you have to wait yet for another board meeting for it to be approved you're talking a month later and that just isn't the kind of timeliness that's needed for something like this so I really appreciate how it's um you've kept the policy level at intent um but then you have very clearly laid out uh regulations and procedures mhm yeah what's interesting too is there's some uh advocacy at the legislative level right now to uh have a Statewide policy and the policy that they're advocating for is actually the one that we're proposing tonight where it's K8 away for the day and then 912 time and place but you're right Kitty this does allow us to be a little bit more Nimble if we need to tweak things one way or another and some of that even include um one of the msba sessions I went to was you know very formative one on cell phone use and um I think we'll still hopefully we'll still have the ability maybe at that site level you know there may be some students who need accommodations or exceptions for learning um maybe they need a special iPad or just I'm assuming that'll all be done you know especially k through eight that'll be that site specific decision for that student yep absolutely even now there's some variations you know um at F they use um cupboards that they put the phones in at Raz they use bins I think the part that's tight and um aligned throughout our district is that no cell phones are out during instructional time like when teaching and learning occurs and maybe can I add that to the answer quickly just if a student were to have IEP or a 504 plan we would follow all accommodations and some of that includes accessibility with devices agre great um have any parents or families objected or give it any opinion this at all I haven't heard um much feedback from families I think if we had asked our students what they thought in September we'd hear very different responses than we heard U I think the the interviews that we did took place in January so that most of them spoke to I wasn't really happy about it at first and now I actually would probably keep doing what we're doing go ahead I have a question so who who is getting this just clarify so first step is that it comes to the board right so then once it's approved and put into policy then um it's already been um this was codeveloped veled by some principles and Educators throughout our district then next up it would be communicated with all staff and then communicated with all families as well um I do Wonder um maybe like put a version on it right because things might change oh yeah right put a version on it good point and I do wonder whether we want to like reference a policy number so if somebody say what what how does this connect with a General District policy that right so that people know where to go if if especially for family good be back yeah that this is connected right it's connected to a district policy uh that is more at the high level I me this is more at the local level yeah we'll make that adjustment yeah for second thank you thank you for your work you bet could you comment on how much time teachers are having to spend to enforce this policy and is it getting better I think there was a great deal of effort um taking place at the beginning of the year I think it's probably become more standard operation but I also feel like after breaks like winter break things like that we have to do more reminders um and it's also just good practice as the year goes along to just make sure like we're following the policy some of the kids spoke to that too around like it might be enforced differently like the teacher might make you put it in your backpack instead of putting it in the bin but it can't be out in class that should be the the common piece thank you I have one more question so so I I was just envisioning right as a teacher how could we uh support them to make sure either are we going to have like specific little cards or posters or something to remind students just just a thought yeah yeah that's a good question I'll run that past some principles and teachers too just kind of like what would help them to kind of keep that like you know you don't have to go through it every time but it's there right just like we have other other kind of uh either um teachers not have like their rules for the classroom or their discipline uh policies or whatever procedure would this be one that if they do if they think that this would be necessary to remind folks right because sometimes when it's posted you can use like as it a nonvisual too where you're just pointing to it versus a dialogue yeah yeah exactly yeah I'll do some research around that maybe have students design it maybe I don't know just make you fun and then what we be approving tonight is really not this correct what we're approving is this this is the forever it's the red line change tomorrow yep that goes back to director goin's point of the policy is the intent whereas like the um guidance is more the um specifics yeah when I saw how you had framed this I real no no happier person on Earth would there be besides director go policy level that's right not processor that's right it should be all right thank you you very much or or sorry did you have a question oh no I'm assuming we're going to continue right let the AI portion oh the AI portion yeah I'll I'll speak to that a little bit that uh I'm less involved with the AI portion than I am with the cell phone portion um but at this time um I've worked a little bit with our uh director of Technology Tiner Clawson as well as executive director Sherry Thompson and at this time we don't see the necess necessity for a separate policy specifically addressing artificial intelligence or otherwise known as a I our instructional technology leadership group conducted an extensive research and discussion on whether AI warranted a district policy after careful consideration it was determined that sense AI is already embedded in commonly used tools such as um um Google search it's more appro appropriate to incorporate it just within the acceptable use policy rather than a standalone policy there can be this common perception that AI primarily refer refers to applications like chat GPT or Gemini but however what many don't realize is that AI is already an integral part of various productivity uh Tools in daily operations for example spellcheck would be considered AI if you use text messaging and it predicts your Texs that's AI right so additionally we have observed that other school districts including msba policies have not implemented AI specific policies at this time so while this may evolve in the future uh we believe that for now incorporating AI under the acceptable use policy provides a more um adaptable approach the structure also allows for administrative flexibility to address emerging concerns as they arise similar to how policies regarding cell phone and other technology uses have been um handled so that is the current recommendation for including AI as a portion of the acceptable use policy but not in a standalone policy we also have it in the student Behavior policy correct it is in policy 520 and it is under the section of the policy that deals with plagurism so we do have it now kind of folded into two different policies thanks for explaining first reading so we'll vote on it next time see you next meeting and I will take some of that feedback and bring that back next time thanks to follow I don't have a slideshow I don't have kids no music music um what I do have is uh we are looking for approval Administration as uh requesting your approval of the 2324 uh audited Financial statements uh at the last meeting Clifton LaRon Al uh Allen was out and presented the results of the audit uh so we do have U final reports uh we have actually submitted reports to the Department of Education and other entities that uh we are required to um by law so we are seeking approval this evening all right anybody move approval of the audit second right it's been moved is there a second second all right it's been moved and seconded uh any further discussion um I think we've all had a chance to you know there's other additional materials that we've looked through um Clifton Clifton alen Larson right cla a phenomenal job um you know with their presentation last yeah last meeting uh as as did you Sherry director Thompson so I don't have any I I appreciate all the work though all the work in the very uh detailed point but I would like to see that the fund balance information that is in it is corrected to reflect the changes we've made this past year yes I did communicate that this afternoon regarding our policy right our policies yeah um we still have the old policy that they quoted in there in several spots good catch it's great all right but I appreciate all the work I mean I know how phenomenally difficult it is and how incredible amount of numbers and detail has to be tied out so very much thank you and your staff and the CLA staff for getting through it all thank you and yes we're I'm very thankful for the team that I'm able to work with in Roseville so and yeah and now we're gearing up for the next one and and as we and those who watched last time will recall it was a clean audit yes which is the highest level you can it and so in addition to thankfulness for the work of doing the audit itself I think there's also appreciation due to you and the team for just making all the processes appropriate and proper to get the clean audit in the first place so thank you that's even the harder part is the underlying background work and changing how things are actually done and approved and processed to make sure that uh that we passed with the with flying color so thank you thank you all right much uh it is still on the floor it's been moved and seconded to be purposeful and plann for a possible special primary February 25th um even if we're not sure if we need one or not but uh it is staff's recommendation that we do reschedule our 25th board meeting to Wednesday February 26th uh Community input lisening session if if needed will still be held at 6 PM prior followed by the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. and the location will be here Fairview room and the betu Teta Education Center all right so um I will actually U make the initial motion I move that we um reschedule February 25th 2025 meeting to Wednesday February 26 2025 it's been moved is there a second I'll second it okay moved and seconded any further discussion just uh I think Trina had said that she was set to do an aat report on so all the people who are coming they'll be notified appropriately and all that right and we'll see if any need to reschedule or anything okay I think we've al already been notified by some Community input individuals that we let know I think that's one of the reason we we need to move right because we we have to notify the public yes uh of our meetings and all the materials that go with that so we can just wait till like oh wow um let's move right let's move now because so I think this is the reason here we have a meeting we have to vote when we have a meeting U much easier to do that yeah so really appreciate the that we have a chance to do that thank you thank you for that reminder all right so we move it in seconded all those in favor signify by saying I I I all those opposed all right motion carries all right we're moving on to board reports for the evening uh let's start with uh Dr Frank Shaw ah well I can say uh Tod was also there I went to the sixth grade honors chorus concert last Wednesday it was or something anyway I just wanted to comment how great that is it was wonderful to see the kids having such a wonderful time and I like the idea of bringing all of the separate sixth grades together from around the district um especially to to do something where they're singing In Harmony together that's I think that's great we also have the um track meet where there's a little of competition among them but it also still brings brings them all together and I think anything that we can do that eases a little bit the transition to middle school that's it right director Goins um well I had the opportunity this afternoon to extend the harambe student assembly um for the um African-American involvement parent um uh recognition that occurred in a number of our buildings today and and the energy in the building was just incredible and so many families came I mean the gym was just packed uh for the student uh celebration and there was lots of singing of different songs by the different grades and it was really a celebration of the equity and diversity in the school and the community that's built um in that school so that was just lovely this morning I had a chance to attend the Raz African-American open house uh Cher Anderson was there as well so I'll wait for you to report on that one um the uh teacher leader program there were three of us uh Frank and Rose and I who were able to attend that on uh Saturday we have a a group of teachers I guess it's the fifth or sixth year now that um teachers been able to sign up for it to do a kind of a research project and then they'll be presenting their results in May um and I know a number of the board members and administration will have to attend those they're very thoughtful and this was really in preparation for that um asking you know questions uh thoughtful questions about the state of the district what uh what we see as the biggest opportunity what we see as the biggest challenges Etc was always a a very fun program um to hear directly some from staff um on some things that are of of key consideration uh last week on I got to attend the um Community Education advisory Council uh which was a treat it's not one I'm normally um assigned but I I got to make that one and the president presentation was the on the aquatics program um that they shared and they have a wide range of roughly 100 different classes that they offer um open swim lap swim lots of uh different kinds of exercises from easy to hard um in the water uh swim lessons uh ones even now for adults learning to swim which I thought was just wonderful as well as kids and and it's they really redesigned um the swim lessons since I was from amiliar with it um it's more of a natural progress of skills rather than some set categories that have historically been established and water safety has a much larger part now than it has in the path which is so important since it's a leading cause of accidental death in youth um so that that's just wonderful to see how that evolved and and um really um moved forward um just mentioned their upcoming a couple of events they've got puzzle paloa on March 1st and lots of people love to do puzzles and that's a great event to do with the team and they're going to do their first sustainability event on Earth Day where they're going to have a kind of a parking lot in the G in the uh out here um and people get two garage or two stalls and they can put their car in one and have a little booth in the other and so it's kind of a sustainability um you know uh reuse re recycle kind of uh event um uh as well as they'll have food truck and some other um fun things so that sounds like things that others might really enjoy um I just mentioned those and then one other thing I want to make uh the board aware of is um the Minnesota Board on Aging is reviewing um how they read the policy act on title three funds that go to Meals on Wheels and uh potentially um if they in fact accept the review way of reading it we could be down significant funds for our our meals on Wheel program because of the size of our program versus other intricacies but I just wanted the group to be aware I know there's many advocating um uh to try to uh to under for them to understand the implications so that change is not made because the benefit is isn't the the downside exceeds a benefit any benefit from that and then the last one um is the equity leadership advisory Council if you're going to report on that then I'll just no go ahead oh okay um we uh met uh last week I guess yeah um and uh basically um we were talking about chapter 7 on the street Data Book which is really about making learning public and um to support that discussion um uh a a director I don't know if we call you director assistant superintendent Smith uh sorry um really covered plc's and more in depth than I've ever had an opportunity to hear about and it was very exciting about the the vision and um approach that the district is is is taking um I think uh you know others would find it very valuable too um but um just a couple of highlights is all the buildings are doing it there are some things that are tight that are required of all building buildings and some things that are loose that allow the building some flexibility in terms of how they implement it but it's very much a focus on learning collab and working collaborate and very much result or oriented and being student Centric um as we discussed the the public learning element um plc's obviously have a components of that in the PLC um but because of the student Centric focus and so many students to get through and really trying to determine where all those students are at there's not as much time for that public learning I mean in terms of sharing how we doing something and getting feedback so that was an opportunity that was identifi um did you record what time the puzzle Mania thing is going to be oh let's see well I think Cindy could tell you if I can't just a minute here let me just 1 to 3 p.m. 1 is 1 to 3 but it is it is actually full okay there's 40 teams that are registered oh my goodness section A family section and an adult section wow yes what a great idea it never would have occurred to me to have that kind of third annual all right Dr baseski uh several things uh let's see so um the week of February 17 19 is alternative education week so February Alternative High School is holding a celebration that week it's a week where they'll celebrate their students School staff members and it is the 18th year uh since F was started and in that time they've been able to celebrate over 500 graduates uh through F so 18 years and 500 graduates uh and through the week There's going to have they're going to have like a comfort day a sports day a hat day they're going to do picture games team building they're gonna have a rock paper scissors contest and on Friday there's going to be a bingo game which I'm GNA go to so we'll check that out I just wanted to share that that that celebratory week is coming up um I did get a chance to sit with the advanced academics and talent development committee aatd formerly known as gtac um and Trina her is is doing a good job there it was a really good mix of parents staff teachers and students who attend those sessions uh she did breakout sessions just get ideas back on how the a aatd program you know could be improved and what parents are looking for and I think she'll probably come at the next meeting is going do a fuller report but some key takeaways I think that that she heard uh was just had a lot to do just communication have specific communication around aatd programs to those parents even think about logistics like what time the messages go out you know because in the busy morning and I think that's probably true with everyone so their way to space it through the day I think the students um they were interested in a couple things one to hear more directly from teachers who would come and visit in their classes and share with them what what the advanced classes are really like what what's the real rigor what's the differentiation of the courses to help them make informed choices as to where they want to take those or not and also hoping maybe for a better more robust information around uh scholar ship that might be out there and scholarships not only even for just the Twin Cities or Minnesota but even National scholarships that they could qualify for so I'm sure she'll report on that but it was a very very well done session with a lot of great ideas I think that came from the group a couple of the kids and one of the teachers also was advocating to move to a 4-day school week uh they seem to suggest that literature says that that's a better model I hadn't seen that myself but you know one could counter we could go to six days like in Japan but you know they I'm sure they will be interested in that uh and then finally uh I did also get a chance to uh join in with the harambe PTO um again a very active group as and with the energy that kitty cited from what you saw there as one would expect from what is still the only year round offering in the metro area uh with its Environmental Services Focus uh and bringing kids from all over the place um they do what pto's do they're doing bigo night movie Nights Summer Splash nights coming up um they've uh they're going to do a little free library site they've already gotten the materials and the kit to put that together outside the building uh they've done the D to donate like I know a lot of folks have done they've done it with Parkway I think Parkway it's still the third Wednesday of every month through May if you go to Parkway Pizza on Lexington and whatever it is roson um you know some of that goes to donate to to the group unfortunately that's a board night so we can't go um you could always reschedule it yeah let's yeah let's not uh the one thing that they actually did specific that the chair of the PTO she did ask me to bring up is uh they're involved with the next TX recycling plastic program where they collect plastic and recycle it and they get money depending on the poundage and they have something like 300 pounds collected and it's like more than than they need so she was going to reach out to the pto's at some of the other elementary schools to see if they'd like to partner on kind of a joint collaborative nextrex recycling plastic program so those of you who may be going to PTO meetings just let them know or she may call them directly anyway but she asked if I'd bring it up at the board so I would and the reason I asked about March 1st and is the last thing I have on March 1st is the second annual harambe pancake breakfast from 8: to noon so I was going to suggest you go have your pancakes and then go to puzzlemania but unfortunately if that's you can't do that but as it was last year it's at the Masonic Lodge on Plato Boulevard down in St Paul just across the river so it's a little bit of a trek to get to but given that harambe pulls kids in from St Paul and all over it's an appropriate location and I think there's a parent or somebody that has a relationship with the Masonic lodge and that's where they're able to do it I went last year it was really fun you know and the money is going to support this year's harambe camping trip in June so March 1st mark your calendars 8 to noon trudge on down there have your pancakes and uh and and then have a great morning so that's what I got thank you yeah some of it has been mentioned I was with the equity uh leadership committee thank you for your presentation on PLC um I have to say uh the teacher teacher leader program our teachers were asking some great questions and I think you know when you have opportunities like that to share kind of like H what what the board is thinking um how how does it work even right how do it just it was just wonderful to be you know on a Saturday morning very snowy that morning that we have a group of dedicated Educators who like spend the whole day there it's been a whole day um um to really want to think about research and so I look forward to the um whatever the date that May 3rd I think oh is it 3rd yeah one of those days I think it's third on a Saturday when they will be presenting to us and then finally I'll say this morning I did actually go to the open house this morning at RAS and I have something to prove because I did the vision board in five minutes and I know kiny was there and many other people were there and you were there too and it was so nice to hang out with a group of high school students African-American students cutting and like pasting and gluing I know you were were were at some song thing I think you guys were there earlier and I asked them isn't it great that we are not even touching the phone they go uhhuh yeah right so we just talking about the phone right that we were doing something with our hands right was a great mental break and I could to see everybody's vision board it was just lovely was lovely so thanks to um um assistant principal uh shelin Hayes for organizing that uh so wonderful event yeah great that's a nice segue thanks for touching upon that and we want to thank shyn Hayes and the Raz black student union and director gogin and I were able to catch the early portion uh just some fantastic um traditional African drum playing yes uh to start the whole presentation uh one of the students had a fantastic and beautiful spoken word with some of that drum playing lightly in the background it was just powerful I thought that was great and I want to say I'm very proud of the staff the district leadership that was there looking at y three of you um really providing some great answers I think you had to answer like something about Thrive or answer a question and really your answers were fantastic they were powerful and I think the kids really loved what you had to say and really inspiring the kids who are already an inspiring group of kids I mean they're just fantastic and they give us hope uh for the future and see the Future Leaders there but I think they really love what you had to say I love what you guys had to say thank you for repres presing us um what you had to say and um I know that I did really horrible on the portion of guest the jams we tried to have some fun 10 songs played a little snippet uh once we got past the 60s Motown I was lost um but I would like to ask who won by the way oh oh really well well way to go K well that was a that was a little bit of fun we had before the vision board but I just I thought it went so well I was really impressed with the how it turned out and and and they were doing they're doing another one or they did another one this evening um from 5 to S so I'm sure they Incorporated even more families um into that but I was really impressed with that uh that turnout and uh the involvement day and um also a nice segue into uh February is Black History Month uh Roseville area schools is proud to celebrate Black History Month we honor the contributions and achievements of our black students staff family and our community members who strengthen our schools with their leadership never forget that black history is American history and then last but certainly not least we have some fantastic teachers in this District we've always known about uh the Minnesota teacher of the year candidates the the long lengthy list is out in Rosy schools has four student uh four students four teachers four teachers on that list uh I just want to read their names we are so proud and honored uh of Shawn padon uh Rose Area Middle School teacher Jennifer George ederton Elementary teacher Vara lth Roseville area high school teacher and Avery Turner andma D Williams Elementary Lead Teacher we are so honored and um thankful uh representing Roseville area schools and we look forward to them moving on in the process so looking forward to that and Mr chair maybe Miss superintendent how does one become nominated for that is it peers is it how how are those folk I'm just curious I I knew it in the the past I forgot it so it's an honest question what process did they have to go through to be so honored yeah from what I understand that you may be on nominated by a peer uh again colleague Community member parent family member um I'm not sure about self-nominations of course but anyone can nominate and then the further the process moves along the more rigorous it becomes with interviews and letters and stories that they're able to tell about their own teaching experience okay thank you thank you question all right and that's a nice segue to superintend report yeah thank you chair uh good evening tonight I'd like to highlight our ongoing and growing partnership with do good Roseville we'd like to thank do good Roseville for their Roseville cares initiative that led to the direct Community Support of raising donations of warm clothes and winter coats to be distributed to students and families experiencing homelessness I'd also like to thank DG good Roseville for hosting a Faith Community Partnership meeting next week where we will come together and discuss ways we can best support our students and families throughout the greater Roseville Community thank you
