[0:00] The Buy Nothing Store was started by [0:01] Jill Kerry. Um she's a wonderful person [0:03] in the St. Anthony community and the [0:05] whole goal of it is to try to reduce [0:07] some of the waste that's involved with [0:08] toys around the holidays. So we're [0:10] trying to keep things out of the [0:11] landfill to hand them on and to have [0:13] like a spirit of neighborliness. So [0:15] people line up outside the door before [0:17] the event even opens as there's a big [0:19] crowd. It feels very Black Fridayes in [0:21] the first hour. There are arrows that [0:23] take you through the cafeteria. So [0:25] please follow that path. And then in the [0:26] first hour, we're going to restrict the [0:28] number of items to like one bag and one [0:30] big item just to make sure that there's [0:32] enough for everybody, but then after [0:34] 9:00, it'll be open free-for-all. Take [0:35] as much as you want. I think it's a [0:37] really cool event. Uh I love the [0:39] sustainability aspect. I love the [0:41] ability to swap out toys for my kids and [0:42] have it be a lower cost burden, too, and [0:44] to be just less wasteful. So, I love it [0:46] from the sustainability piece. Others [0:48] love it for, you know, access in terms [0:50] of free toys. So, it offers an [0:51] opportunity to maybe share neighbor to [0:53] neighbor, a little more, you know, [0:54] one-on-one community- based. Um, and I [0:56] think it's just really cool that people [0:57] can take those things, pass them on, [1:00] find something else useful, and keep all [1:01] those toys out of landfill. So, the Buy [1:03] Nothing toy Store happens on December [1:05] 13th on that Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to [1:07] 1:00 p.m. We do have open gym that opens [1:09] up at 9:30 a.m. if an adult wants to [1:12] come with kids um and watch them in Open [1:13] Gym while another adult shops. For setup [1:16] and donations, it's that Thursday and [1:17] Friday before, so December 11th through [1:19] the 12th. So, one thing we want to do [1:20] differently this year is to more [1:22] publicly present some of our charter [1:24] information. So, the things that we use [1:25] to help plan and get this off the ground [1:28] in the hopes that other communities want [1:29] to start it. So, you know, we want to [1:31] encourage people in St. Anthony to be [1:32] doing this, but it can get really big. [1:34] It might be bigger than what we could [1:35] sustain. And it's something that's [1:36] pretty a pretty easy lift. So, you know, [1:38] we work through our early childhood um [1:40] and family education coordinator. I'm [1:42] sure most cities have those. They have a [1:44] community center, so we use the [1:45] community center space. There's very [1:47] little overhead. Um, it's really just [1:48] reserving the room. So, I really hope [1:50] that people want to take on the [1:52] opportunity to lift this in their own [1:53] communities and provide that exchange [1:55] for their own towns.
