Roseville Area Schools recently highlighted the success and growth of its Dual Language Spanish Immersion (DLSI) program, celebrating a significant milestone as its inaugural cohort prepares for graduation. During a school board meeting on Tuesday, April 8th, district officials presented a comprehensive overview of the program, underscoring its impact on student linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding. The presentation, led by Luly Flores Hansen, Multilingual Program Administrator, detailed the journey of students who began their immersion education in elementary school and are now set to graduate from Roseville Area High School (RAHS) with advanced Spanish language skills.

The DLSI program is integral to the curriculum at several elementary schools, including Falcon Heights Elementary, Harambe Elementary, and Little Canada Elementary. It seamlessly extends through Roseville Area Middle School (RAMS) and culminates at RAHS, where students continue to build upon their Spanish language skills while completing core academic requirements. The district emphasized the program's robust design, which integrates core academic subjects taught in Spanish. Notably, Alysia Pas, a Science Teacher, was highlighted for her work in converting science curriculum to Spanish, demonstrating the depth of immersion provided across subjects.

Yamira Sanchez Morales, a graduating senior and a proud participant in the first DLSI class, shared her personal experience and the profound benefits she gained from the program. Her testimony underscored the program’s positive influence on her academic and personal development, showcasing its long-term effectiveness in action.

The DLSI program operates within Roseville Area Schools' broader framework for multilingual programming and English Language Development (ELD). With an observed increase in English Learner enrollment, particularly at the middle school level, the district continuously adapts its resources to support its diverse student population. Multilingual Program Administrator Luly Flores Hansen, in her presentation encompassing the district's overall multilingual efforts, underscored the importance of empowering families with knowledge.
