that's been a big Topic in my work in the neighborhood the last two weeks Alone um preparing for a town hall later this month where we're going to really talk about the challenging work ahead of us to stabilize the Midway as it goes through this change tomorrow on the council agenda we're going to vote on funding for Supportive Housing to keep uh creating spaces not not opportunities for people who are struggling with deep seated issues and addiction and substance abuse to be able to start to level out their lives and get help um all of those are just in the course of my work as a council member being council president means I am now involved in a lot of city-wide work as well to really help coordinate our Council to deliver what it needs for residents I just came from a conversation with Council buy who was giving me the rundown on um how she is holding Community emotions around the uh mot rethinking I94 initiative and the sort of um parallel or related effort within the rhama community to try to build a land bridge um really uh being a daughter of Rondo and and having those experiences in her family of displacement and of um land property businesses assets being literally destroyed and taken away to build a freeway so that people can travel through the city and now Generations later we're Reckoning and we're you know working with our state agency on a buold vision that's going to undo that harm and and we are the ones who our community chose in this moment to help lead that conversation that feels really heavy that is a hard thing to do um but we ran because we know that someone has to do it someone with lived experiences and a desire to make sure our community's voice is in that conversation and that their interests are at the heart of what we're doing for the future needs to be in that conversation um so when I think about the the communities that you're representing that you're holding and all that you're working on I just really need you to know that your work it has um amplifier effect it has the ability to really expand and and shift the government and social conversation from a place about um you know private Market investment for private Market interest benefit only and sometimes incidentally some Community benefit to actually leave the chance to make different public policy decisions that fund Community ownership fund local ownership help the businesses that I support and go to in a mid way um help community and really to end here on the West side is so fitting because I'm sure that you've heard or have had chance to talk today about um residents from the west side that were displaced by an industrial park that was built and uh today in the course of my meetings I am working on the budget with my peers because it's that time of year work on and finalize the budget and there's a proposal in the budget from the mayor to help deliver down assistance specifically targeted to Latino lost their homes in that displacement right so we can make different choices we can make different Investments it's also incredibly hard and what I view this group as doing is operationalizing that work in the outside government sector and next to it and alongside us right so that we can make it real for our communities and also to shift the conversation to shift the conversation about what is possible and to um take the urgency and necessity of who all this is for it matters not just the abstract not the abstractions but the business that called me because their property got bought and they were freaking out and we organized emergency assistance for them the families who I talked to on the west side and looked in their eyes and listened to them while they shared what it was like to have their home like marked for condemnation um the community members who um are still in Rondo today and um said we got to do something about this and they elected a mayor and a councilwoman to work with the rest of us to do something about it because um because it's been going on too long so I want to just give you that as you leave I want to say thank you for bringing your work here um for doing your work here and I'm really proud to get to be a partner in that work and the role I get to to do now leading our Council forward so from the bottom of my heart I just want to say thank you so much and really proud to get to spend even a shred of my day with you we all know this work is hard our days get long but um stay in the fight keep that Fu close need it so thankk you and have a good rest of your day take care
