the goals of the PC Arch are really to bring a community lens to the work that law enforcement does in the city of St Paul to provide some transparency and Community involvement I think it's really important that community policing involves the community and this is a really important way to do that that I think is is really helpful in a lot of ways my role on the pcar and the work that I do as a commissioner is one of the most difficult volunteer opportunities I've ever had but it's the most rewarding I know that when we review the facts of cases we and we make recommendations that we are making differences in the lives of our community members at a very basic level we are helping the community build more trust in our police department and we're also encouraging our Police Department to be more responsive to our community the decision-making process on the pcch is uh really interesting piece of how all of this works each of us is individually given the case information body warn camera footage and all of the information that we need to review we then independently review all of that um that can take anywhere from 5 hours a month to 20 hours a month depending um we look at the facts we look at what we're seeing in those videos we look at what we're seeing in the documentation we then look in the handbook to find out what are the actual rules and policies surrounding these behaviors and these instances and we use all of that information to come to a determination maybe there's a policy that shouldn't be in place that we can review and we have a forum where we can ask police officers questions and about their policies so that we're better informed and can help serve the community our relationship and our and our partnership with the PC Arch is about making sure that we're always doing things the very best way that we can and that we're always relooking at everything we do to make sure that it's successful we provide that outlet for community members to know that if they have an interaction with an officer that doesn't meet their needs that it will be reviewed by a panel of their peers go and learn more go attend our civilian police academy go learn more about the process this might be a lot closer to something you get a great reward from and I can guarantee you we're going to benefit from it it feels really good to be part of something important that my community is doing we are always recruiting new members to be part of the PC Arc we welcome diverse perspectives diverse experiences and we welcome anyone who would like to be part of positive change in our community if you're not ready to be a commissioner yet one of the things you can do is attend our monthly meetings they're the first Wednesday of every month they're listed on the PC arc's website and they move around the city from month to month we have an open portion of our meeting where we discuss uh training topics we talk about trends that we're seeing in the community we're able to give input on proposed policy changes that the department is considering for example the department just brought in drones and we were able as a commission to share our feedback on their proposed drone policy so it's a nice way to get engaged and learn about what is going on with policing in our community and we'd love to have you join us for one of our meetings come join us if you're passionate about your community and you want to make a difference and help our policemen be better police officers and our community be a better Community I think this is a really important process that people should really be involved in what I'm hoping you'll consider is is that um one of the greatest and most important Services you can do as we create safety in our city is to serve on our police civilian Internal Affairs review commission joining the peace YK provides a service for our city that is instrumental to everything we do and it's a connecting block to all those pieces and so anybody out there that has ever thought is there something that I could do to be a part of the solution to serve to go out and help our community please consider joining the PCR
