Thanks to a $2.6 [0:12] million federal safer grant from FEMA, [0:15] Shakape is adding 12 full-time [0:17] firefighters to its team. Let's get the [0:19] rundown on what this means for the [0:21] community from Fire Chief Joe Simon. [0:24] >> A second fire station and fire truck [0:26] will now be staffed 24/7. [0:29] This boosts our ability to respond to [0:31] multiple emergencies at once, both in [0:34] Shock Pete and in our neighboring [0:36] communities. Faster response times mean [0:39] better outcomes because in an emergency, [0:42] every minute counts. More firefighters [0:44] also means more emergency medical [0:47] coverage. Our new full-time firefighters [0:49] will all be trained emergency medical [0:51] technicians, also known as EMTs, [0:55] allowing us to respond to more medical [0:57] calls and provide critical care sooner. [1:00] The Shakapei Fire Department has been [1:02] around since 1883. [1:05] At one time, operating with the help of [1:07] more than 100 volunteers. [1:09] Over the past decade, we've been [1:11] transitioning to a full-time model to [1:13] meet the growing needs of our city. This [1:16] grant is going to put us in a great [1:17] position to meet the city's needs [1:19] without overburdening the taxpayers. [1:21] >> As Shakape grows with more residents, [1:24] more buildings, and more visitors, we [1:26] need a reliable, predictable emergency [1:29] response. This grant helps us accelerate [1:32] that transition and meet national [1:34] standards for fire and EMS services. [1:38] The result will be a stronger, faster, [1:41] and more resilient fire department, [1:43] making Shakabe safer for years to come.
