[0:14] I think what's great about Savage is [0:15] that we are a good size city, but we're [0:18] also not a giant metro city. [0:20] >> We have the river right to the north of [0:22] us, which creates kind of a natural [0:23] barrier from us and those the actual [0:26] cities, per se. We have lots of parks. [0:28] Our city takes pride in our city parks. [0:30] >> Most cops will tell you they don't want [0:32] to live in the city they work in, but I [0:34] would say at least half of our agency [0:36] lives in Savage. And I think that just [0:38] speaks to, you know, being comfortable [0:41] in the community. [0:41] >> Our police department as a whole takes a [0:43] lot of pride in retaining the trust of [0:45] our community. Our city has our back. [0:47] And so with that, we engage a lot with [0:49] the community. [0:50] >> Everyone in the community is more [0:52] tight-knit, I think, than a lot of [0:53] bigger cities are. And I think that's [0:55] what a lot of people like about Savage. [0:57] where we're not a big department. You're [0:58] just another number, right? We're not [1:00] rifling through officers. You know [1:02] everybody in the record staff. You know [1:03] everybody in the support staff and they [1:05] know you. [1:06] >> People like us here and care about us [1:09] and want us to do well. [1:18] >> Some opportunities that you have here [1:20] when you're working for the PD. [1:21] Depending on where you want your career [1:23] to go, there's ample opportunities to [1:24] become instructors. whether that's use [1:26] of force or firearms or something like [1:28] that. [1:30] You can get into the detective realm and [1:32] go and work in the investigations [1:33] department like I chose to do and you [1:36] can go and get promoted to be a [1:37] sergeant. Uh you can become a field [1:39] training officer. You can teach other [1:41] people how to do their job. [1:42] >> Hey, move. [1:44] >> You can go join the SWAT team, become a [1:46] SWAT operator. [1:49] What I've noticed just being new here, [1:52] Savage invests so much time into [1:54] training. Having well-trained officers [1:57] is important because we need to be [2:00] prepared for any given situation. [2:02] >> I think if anyone's interested in a [2:04] certain field here or specialty, uh they [2:08] will give you a chance. [2:09] >> It's very rare that anybody gets denied [2:11] a training around here, which is pretty [2:13] pretty good as far as police departments [2:15] go. [2:19] I think career-wise there is a career [2:22] here. [2:25] >> One of the things I enjoy most about [2:27] being a police officer is knowing that I [2:28] do something that can actually have an [2:30] impact on people um in a good way and [2:33] change the way their life is going. [2:35] >> I think that's one great thing about law [2:36] enforcement is we get the opportunity to [2:38] take someone's absolute worst day and [2:40] just make it a tiny bit better. And that [2:42] is super rewarding about this job. [2:45] when I was going through the process of [2:47] becoming a police officer and I put in [2:49] for Savage, you know, you go through the [2:51] initial process, you get interviewed and [2:52] you get backgrounded and then I remember [2:55] when Chief Sawyer reached out to me and [2:57] I knew I was getting a call from him and [2:59] I thought he was going to offer me a [3:00] job, but instead he asked me, "Would you [3:02] like to join this family?" He legit said [3:04] that and I always remembered that. So [3:06] that is actually that's legit what he [3:08] said to me. We treat this police [3:10] department like a family. Coming to work [3:13] and working with the people I work with [3:15] feels like I'm coming to a second home [3:16] where this is where my other family is.
